Quick answer

First, is the dryer actually running? Frigidaire's own checks for a dryer that won't start or stops:

  1. Hold Start for 2 seconds. Frigidaire says the start button has to be pushed or turned long enough to engage.
  2. Cycle knob fully into a cycle. Turn it a little further past the start position.
  3. Door completely closed. The dryer won't run with the door open.
  4. Power: plug firmly in the outlet (no extension cord); reset the breaker or replace the fuse.
  5. Overloaded? Let the motor cool for 30 minutes. Frigidaire says overloading can overheat the motor; an average washer load fills the drum 1/3 to 1/2 full.

Motor runs but the drum doesn't turn? Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand:

E52 on the display means the motor stopped or won't start; Frigidaire's tech sheet says remove the load, check that the drum turns freely, and allow up to 30 minutes for a tripped motor protector to reset.

Which Frigidaire dryer do you have?

Find your model and serial number on the dryer's label (your Use & Care guide shows where). You need it for the right belt, idler, or motor, because Frigidaire uses several drive layouts.

TypeModel prefix (examples)What "not spinning" can look likeNotes
ElectricOften FFRE (check label)Runs, drum still; or stops after overheating240 V; electric models have a thermal limiter that can shut off the motor
GasOften FFRG (check label)Same120 V plug for the motor and controls; gas parts are pro-only
Laundry centerOften FLCE / FLCG (check label)Same, but access is harderLaundry-center parts differ from standalone dryers

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Start properly. Push or turn Start and hold it 2 seconds. Make sure the cycle knob is slightly past the start position.
  2. Door: close it firmly. Look for clothing caught in the latch.
  3. Power: plug the cord in tightly. Don't use an extension cord. Check the breaker or fuses; on electric dryers, both halves of the double breaker.
  4. Load: if the drum is packed, take some out. Frigidaire says an average washer load fills the drum 1/3 to 1/2 full.
  5. Cool down: if the dryer stopped mid-cycle with a big load, wait 30 minutes and try again.
  6. Lint and vent: clean the lint screen (wash it in warm soapy water if it looks waxy). Check the vent hood flap opens when the dryer runs. Overheating is what trips the motor protector and limiters.
  7. Listen: with the dryer running, do you hear the motor hum or run? Note any squeal, thump, or grinding.
  8. Hand-turn test (unplugged): turn the drum by hand. Free spin means the belt; stiff or grinding means rollers or the bearing.

How to know it's fixed: a normal load tumbles through a full timed cycle without stopping.

Frigidaire's own sources disagree on a dryer that stops

Frigidaire's owner article and its technician data sheet describe the same "dryer stopped" problem differently. Here they are side by side.

Frigidaire owner support: "What should I do if my dryer stops operating?"Frigidaire Dryer Tech Data Sheet 137032900 (for technicians)
Overheated motorOverloading can overheat the motor: let it cool 30 minutes, reduce the loadE52: motor stopped or not starting. Remove the load, check the drum turns freely by hand, check supply voltage, motor wiring, and the motor thermal protector, which can take up to 30 minutes to reset
Thermal limiterOn electric dryers, a thermal limiter switch turns off the motor if the dryer overheats; you'll need a service provider to replace itLimiters show up as heat-circuit codes (E65 inlet limiter on electric, E66 outlet limiter), checked for continuity, with a look for the high-temperature cause first
When to callIf cooling and a smaller load don't help, contact an authorized service providerDiagnose by code; E53 (motor centrifugal switch) can mean the motor or control board

Our take: both point the same way. If a big load stopped mid-cycle, wait 30 minutes and try a smaller load; the motor's own protector resets itself. If it keeps stopping, or an electric dryer stops after running hot, have a tech check the limiter and the vent. Replacing a limiter without fixing the airflow just trips the new one.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (or switch off the breaker). On gas models, shut the gas valve before moving the dryer.

1. Motor runs, drum spins freely by hand

Likely cause: a broken or slipped drum belt. If the belt is off rather than broken, check the idler: a worn idler can let it slip. On models with a belt switch, a broken belt also stops the motor, so the dryer may not run at all.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drum beltWraps the drum and turns it from the motorModerate
Idler assemblyKeeps tension on the beltModerate

2. Thumping, squealing, or a drum that's hard to turn

Likely cause: worn drum support rollers, front glides, or the rear bearing. The drum drags, the belt slips, and the motor may overheat and stop. Frigidaire's noise article says to check pockets and run an empty load; if the noise stays with the drum empty, contact Frigidaire.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drum support rollersHold up the drumAdvanced
Drum bearing / bearing kitSupports the back of the drumAdvanced

3. Hums or E52 / E53, drum feels normal by hand

Likely cause: the drive motor or its start circuit. Frigidaire's tech sheet says for E52, check the drum turns freely, the supply voltage, the wiring, and the motor's thermal protector; E53 points at the motor's centrifugal switch (replace the motor) or the board.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive motorTurns the belt (and blower)Advanced

4. Nothing runs with the door shut

Likely cause: a failed door switch or a worn door catch. Frigidaire says the door must be completely closed for the dryer to run, so a switch that doesn't sense it stops everything.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door switchTells the dryer the door is shutModerate
Door catchHolds the door closedEasy → Moderate

5. Stops after running hot (electric)

Likely cause: a tripped thermal limiter, usually from a restricted vent. Frigidaire says a service provider needs to replace it.

DIY difficulty: Pro only.

Call a pro if: it's a gas dryer, a laundry center, the drum has to come out, a limiter tripped, or the dryer is in year 1.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a dryer

Per the Major Appliance Warranty in Frigidaire's US dryer Use & Care guide A29259201 (see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All costs to repair or replace any part that's defective in materials or workmanship, when installed, used, and maintained per the instructionsElectrolux

What this means for a drum that won't spin: in year 1, a failed belt, idler, roller, switch, or motor is covered. Frigidaire's warranty doesn't cover service calls to correct the installation or to instruct you how to use the appliance (holding Start, an overloaded drum), damage from external causes such as an inadequate power supply, or drum damage from foreign objects. Warranty terms can differ by model, so check your own guide.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1; retailer or credit-card extended protection; and your installer if the dryer is newly installed (Frigidaire's support pages send installs under 30 days back to the installer).
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: Start held 2 s, knob position, door, cord and breaker, smaller load, 30-minute cool-down, lint and vent, hand-turn test.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which code or test pointed to the part.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Frigidaire / Electrolux-family part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "frigidaire dryer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung, Danby, and Kenmore- or White-Westinghouse-labeled parts in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not Frigidaire-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means the searches didn't return that part, or the guides don't itemize the job, so we don't show a price.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything Frigidaire's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10–11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year average for dryers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Ask about the rollers and idler too
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Frigidaire stops halfway through a load of wet comforters. After a 30-minute cool-down and splitting the load in two, it runs fine. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Frigidaire runs but the drum spins freely by hand. You replace the belt and idler yourself: R = $60; N = $800.
60 ÷ 800 = 8%; life used 7 ÷ 11 = 64% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 12-year-old Frigidaire shows E52 with an empty drum; the tech quotes a motor and rollers, a year after a heating element ($250): R = $430; N = $800.
430 ÷ 800 = 54% (second-quote zone); life used 12 ÷ 11 = over 100%; repeat check (430 + 250) ÷ 800 = 85% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a motor plus rollers or a board on a dryer past about 10 years, or a second major repair within a year or two.
Tips toward repairing: it's a belt, idler, roller, or door switch; the dryer is in year 1; or it's part of a matched pair or laundry center.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Who services Frigidaire dryers near you

1. Your installer (new installs). Frigidaire's support pages say units installed within the past 30 days should go back to the installer.

2. Frigidaire / Electrolux (warranty or authorized service). In year 1, start with Frigidaire. Have your model, serial number, and proof of purchase ready.

3. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them any code, whether the motor hums, and the hand-turn test result.

Need a repair pro?
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.

4. A licensed electrician. If the breaker keeps tripping, Frigidaire says an overloaded circuit needs an electrician.

5. DIY with the right part. Belts, idlers, and door switches are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Order by your exact model number, and unplug first.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by overloading, improper installation, and lack of maintenance such as vent cleaning. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why did my Frigidaire dryer stop spinning mid-cycle?
Frigidaire says overloading can overheat the motor. Let it cool for 30 minutes and reduce the load; an average washer load fills the drum 1/3 to 1/2 full. On electric dryers, a tripped thermal limiter also shuts off the motor and needs a service provider.

My Frigidaire dryer won't start. What should I check first?
Hold Start for 2 seconds, turn the knob slightly further into the cycle, close the door completely, plug the cord in firmly (no extension cord), and reset the breaker or fuse.

What does E52 mean on a Frigidaire dryer?
On models covered by Frigidaire's tech sheet, the motor stopped or won't start. Remove the load, check that the drum turns by hand, and allow up to 30 minutes for the motor protector to reset. If it returns, the motor, wiring, or supply voltage needs a tech.

How do I know if my Frigidaire dryer belt is broken?
Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand. If it spins with almost no resistance, the belt is likely broken or off.

Why is my Frigidaire dryer thumping?
Frigidaire says check for buckles, coins, and loose items, then run an empty load. If the noise continues empty, contact Frigidaire. A thump that comes with a slow or stopping drum often means worn rollers.

Is it worth fixing a Frigidaire dryer that won't spin?
Usually yes for a belt, idler, roller, or door switch. A motor plus other parts on a dryer older than about 10 years usually isn't. Use the calculator above.
