Whirlpool Dryer Not Spinning? Drum Won't Turn or Tumble — Belt, Rollers, Idler, Motor, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, is the dryer actually starting? Whirlpool's "Not Tumbling or Spinning" and "Not Starting" articles start with the controls, not parts:
- Power: electric dryers use two household fuses or breakers (gas dryers use one). Reset both, or replace a blown fuse. Electric models need 240 V.
- Door: it can look shut but not be latched. Push it closed; some models have an upper and lower latch and both must catch. Make sure no clothing or packing material blocks the latch. An ERR code on some models means the door isn't latched.
- Controls Locked: if the light is on, press and hold the lock button (often Cycle Signal or Control Lock) for 3 seconds.
- Start: press and hold Start for 2–5 seconds. Touch panels need a dry fingertip, not a fingernail.
- Cycle: pick an Automatic Dry or Timed Dry cycle. The dryer won't start on Wrinkle Shield (or Wrinkle Reduction) alone.
If the motor runs (you hear it) but the drum doesn't turn, Whirlpool says the drive belt may be worn or broken. If the drum is hard to move by hand, Whirlpool says it may have seized. A broken motor can also stop the drum. Belts, pulleys, rollers, and drum bearings are jobs Whirlpool suggests a professional inspect first.
Repair or replace? A belt, idler pulley, or rollers are cheap parts and usually worth fixing. A motor on an old dryer is the main "think about replacing" case. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens, or the display shows ERR; Controls Locked on; Start tapped not held; Wrinkle Shield selected; one breaker tripped | Power, door, lock, cycle | ✅ Free fix. Reset both breakers, latch the door, unlock, hold Start |
| Motor runs but the drum spins freely by hand and doesn't turn on its own; thumping or squealing before it stopped | Broken belt, worn idler pulley, worn rollers | 🔧 Usually worth repairing: cheap parts, about an hour of labor |
| Motor hums but won't run; drum won't turn by hand even with the belt off; breaker trips when it starts; dryer is 10+ years old | Seized rollers or drum bearing, failed motor | 🔧 Repair if under about 8 years old; ♻️ lean toward replacing an old dryer that needs a motor |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas. Don't touch switches or plugs. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- You smell burning, see smoke or scorch marks, or the motor hums and gets hot. Unplug the dryer and leave it off; a stalled motor can overheat.
- The breaker trips every time you start it, or the cord or outlet is scorched. Leave it off and call an electrician (Whirlpool's advice when breaker or fuse problems continue).
- Unplug the dryer before you check terminal screws, the belt, or anything behind a panel (Whirlpool says unplug before checking terminal screws). On a gas dryer, close the gas valve before moving it.
- The dryer is still under warranty (Whirlpool covers parts and labor for 1 year from delivery). Use Whirlpool service before you open any panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Whirlpool dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label inside the door opening or on the back of the dryer. You need it for the right belt length, roller kit, and idler.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Drum support (typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric | Usually WED (check label) | Rear rollers, front glides or rollers depending on the platform | 240 V, two breakers |
| Gas | Usually WGD (check label) | Same | One breaker or fuse; gas valve must be open |
| Stacked laundry center | Varies (check label) | Same | Harder access; consider a pro |
| HybridCare heat-pump | Varies (check label) | See manual | Whirlpool has a separate HybridCare "Not Tumbling" article (same lock, cycle, and latch checks) |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your model's parts list shows the exact belt, idler, and roller kit.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Is there power? If the drum light or controls don't light, it's a power problem first. Check both breakers on an electric dryer; Whirlpool says to test a breaker by turning it off and back on. Gas dryers use one.
- Latch the door. Push it firmly. Both latches (if your model has two) must catch. Look for a sock caught at the latch, or leftover packing tape on a new dryer.
- Unlock and hold Start. Controls Locked on? Hold the lock button 3 seconds. Then hold Start 2–5 seconds; Whirlpool says a tap may not give the motor time to engage. Dry your hands and the panel first.
- Check the cycle. Automatic Dry, AccuDry, or Timed Dry. Not Wrinkle Shield alone.
- Power-cycle. Whirlpool's ERR step: breakers off for 1 minute, back on, start a Timed Dry, and watch for 1 minute.
- Listen. Start it with the door closed. Motor running but no tumbling = belt or idler. Humming, no motor run = something is jammed, or the motor (stop after a few seconds). Nothing at all = power, door switch, or a safety fuse.
- Hand-turn the drum (unplugged). Whirlpool says if it's difficult to move, the drum may have seized. If it spins very easily and keeps going, the belt is likely broken (this "too easy" test comes from parts-retailer guides, not Whirlpool).
How to know it's fixed: a 10-minute Timed Dry with a few towels tumbles the whole time, without thumping, squealing, or stopping.
Whirlpool dryer codes and signs linked to "not spinning"

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer. On a gas model, close the gas valve. Belt and roller work usually means taking off the top or front panel and lifting the drum out; your model's tech sheet (often tucked inside the cabinet) shows the steps.
1. Motor runs, drum doesn't turn (spins freely by hand)
Likely causes: a broken drive belt, or an idler pulley that has seized or broken and let the belt slip off.
Signs: you hear the motor and air movement but the drum sits still; the drum turns with almost no effort; a thump or squeal before it stopped.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (front or top panel off).
Tip: replace the idler pulley with the belt if the pulley wobbles, is grooved, or doesn't spin freely; a bad idler wears out a new belt.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive (drum) belt | Wraps the drum and turns it from the motor pulley | Moderate |
| Idler pulley | Keeps the belt tight | Moderate |
2. Drum is hard to turn, thumps, or squeals
Likely causes: worn or seized drum support rollers or roller shafts, worn front glides, or a worn drum bearing.
Signs: stiff drum by hand (especially with the belt off); thumping or squealing for weeks before it stopped; the drum rubs or sits low.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (drum out). Replace rollers as a set.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum support rollers / shafts | Carry the back (and on some models the front) of the drum | Advanced |
| Drum front glides | Low-friction pads the front of the drum rides on | Advanced |
| Drum bearing | Supports the rear of the drum on some platforms | Advanced |
3. Motor hums but won't run, or nothing runs at all
Likely causes: something jamming the drum or blower wheel, a failed drive motor, an open door switch, a blown thermal fuse on models where it's wired into the run circuit, or (rarely) the control board.
Signs: a hum with no rotation (stop within seconds); breaker trips on start; nothing happens even with the door latched and Start held.
DIY difficulty: Moderate for the door switch and thermal fuse; Advanced for the motor.
About the thermal fuse: HomeGuide notes a blocked vent typically causes a dryer's thermal fuse to blow, and a blown fuse can't be reset, only replaced. If yours blew, clean the vent first or the new one will blow too. Your model's wiring diagram shows whether the fuse stops the motor or only the heat.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the belt and the blower | Advanced |
| Door switch | Tells the control the door is shut | Moderate |
| Thermal fuse | One-time safety cutoff on overheating | Moderate |
Hum, no spin, and you've checked the belt? A technician can test the motor, rollers, and switch circuit in one visit and tell you whether the dryer is worth fixing.

Prevent it next time
- Don't overload. Fixr notes belts break under too much stress; HomeGuide says heavy loads and frequent use shorten belt life.
- Keep the vent clean. A blocked vent overheats the dryer and can blow the thermal fuse (HomeGuide).
- Level the dryer. Whirlpool says an unlevel dryer can squeak or squeal; level it and adjust the legs.
- Act on new noises. Thumping and squealing are early signs of rollers, idler, or bearings; fixing them early is cheaper than a burned belt.
- Clean the lint screen every load.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a dryer
Per Whirlpool's US warranty overview (re-read 2026-10-30):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from delivery) | Factory-specified parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship | Whirlpool |
| Some models, longer | Some Whirlpool-family laundry warranties add parts-only coverage on specific components after year 1; check your model's warranty sheet | You |
What this means for a dryer that won't spin: a failed belt, idler, roller, motor, or switch in year 1 is covered. Whirlpool's major-appliance warranty excludes in-home instruction (for example, showing you how to reset breakers or turn off Controls Locked) and improper installation, which includes venting that doesn't meet the instructions. Keep your proof of purchase. Whirlpool's customer center is 1-800-253-1301; its Product Help pages also list 1-866-698-2538.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; any parts-only coverage on your warranty sheet; retailer or credit-card extended protection. Whirlpool also sells extended service plans.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: both breakers, door latches, Controls Locked, hold Start, cycle choice, power-cycle.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the tech will replace the belt and idler together and check the rollers while the drum is out.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool-family part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Other-brand and aftermarket parts in the same results were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless noted, not Whirlpool-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12-year and HomeGuide's 8–13-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Whirlpool electric dryer won't start. One of the two breakers had tripped; resetting it fixed it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Whirlpool dryer runs but the drum doesn't turn. A tech replaces the belt and idler pulley: R = $220; N = $900; no other repairs.
220 ÷ 900 = 24%; life used 7 ÷ 10 = 70%; repeat check 24% → Repair (cheap, and the rest of the dryer is fine).
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Whirlpool dryer hums and won't spin; the tech finds a failed motor and worn rollers: R = $480; N = $800. It had a $200 heating element last year.
480 ÷ 800 = 60%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = 110%; repeat check (480 + 200) ÷ 800 = 85% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a motor on a dryer past about 10 years, a cracked drum, repeated repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a belt, idler, rollers, a switch, or a fuse; the dryer is under about 8 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. An electrician. If a breaker keeps tripping, the outlet or cord is scorched, or you don't have 240 V at an electric dryer.
4. DIY with the right part. Belts, idlers, and rollers are common DIY jobs with the tech sheet. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the breakers, latches, and Controls Locked first?
- Is it the belt, idler, rollers, or motor? How did you confirm it?
- Will you replace the idler with the belt and check the rollers while the drum is out?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans cap appliance payouts, and a dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my Whirlpool dryer not spinning?
First rule out the controls: both breakers on, door fully latched, Controls Locked off, Start held 2 to 5 seconds, and an Automatic or Timed Dry cycle selected. If the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn, Whirlpool says the drive belt may be worn or broken.
My Whirlpool dryer runs but the drum doesn't turn. What is it?
Usually the drive belt, sometimes with a failed idler pulley that let it slip off. Whirlpool says a slipped belt can point to a broken or loose idler.
Why is my Whirlpool dryer drum hard to turn by hand?
Whirlpool says the drum may have seized. Worn rollers, roller shafts, glides, or a drum bearing are the usual parts.
What does ERR mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
Whirlpool says the door isn't completely closed and latched. Push it shut, check both latches, then turn the breakers off for 1 minute, back on, and start a Timed Dry.
Why won't my Whirlpool dryer start on Wrinkle Shield?
Whirlpool says the dryer won't start if it's set on the Wrinkle Shield option alone. Choose an Automatic or Timed Dry cycle.
How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool dryer that won't spin?
Fixr puts belt replacement at $150 to $250 and HomeGuide at $100 to $250. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool dryer belts were listed at about $10 to $79.
Is a Whirlpool dryer worth fixing if the motor failed?
Under about 8 years old, often yes. Past about 10 years, compare the quote with a new dryer using the calculator above.
