Samsung Dryer Not Spinning? Drum Won't Turn or Tumble — Codes, Belt, Idler, Rollers, Motor, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Samsung is blunt about this one: if your dryer isn't spinning, it usually means service is required. But there's one quick test to make sure the cycle is actually starting, and a few free things to rule out first.
Samsung's steps:
- Check for an error code or blinking lights. A door code (dC, dE, dF, do, d0, 1 DC, 1 dF) means the door, latch, or door sensor isn't reading closed. Close it firmly and make sure nothing is caught in it.
- Make sure Child Lock is off. Child Lock stops the Start button from working. Its icon looks like a baby or a lock with a smiley face. Press and hold the two labeled buttons for 3+ seconds, or cut power for 60 seconds.
- Confirm the cycle actually started. Select Time Dry, then touch and hold Start. The minutes should count down (for example, 40 becomes 39 after a minute).
- Timer doesn't count down after 1–2 minutes? The cycle didn't start. Recheck the door and Child Lock and try again.
- Timer counts down but the drum still doesn't turn (or your model has no timer display)? Samsung says request service.
- Motor error 3C (and other codes not in Samsung's list): power off 2–3 minutes, power on, restart. If it returns, request service.
What's usually broken when the timer counts down: a drum belt, idler pulley, worn drum rollers or glides, or the drive motor (parts-guide and cost-guide facts, not Samsung's page). Belts and idlers are cheap; a motor on an older dryer is the main "think about replacing" case.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Child Lock icon lit; dE / d0 / dC door code; Start tapped instead of held; timer doesn't count down | Cycle never started | ✅ Free fix. Unlock, latch the door, hold Start |
| Timer counts down, motor runs, drum doesn't turn; drum spins very easily by hand; squeal or thump before it stopped | Belt, idler pulley, rollers, glides | 🔧 Usually worth repairing: cheap parts, about an hour of labor |
| 3C motor error that returns; hum with no movement; drum stiff by hand with the belt off; dryer 10+ years old | Motor, motor control, seized drum support | 🔧 Repair if newer or under warranty; ♻️ lean toward replacing an old dryer that needs a motor |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas. Don't touch switches or plugs. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- You smell burning, see smoke, or the dryer hums and gets hot without turning. Turn it off at the breaker and leave it off.
- The breaker trips when you start it, or the cord or outlet is scorched. Leave it off and call an electrician.
- Don't keep resetting a code. Samsung says a reset clears the error history, which makes it harder for a technician to diagnose. Do the troubleshooting first; if a code comes back after one reset, request service.
- The dryer is still under warranty (Samsung: 1 year parts and labor, plus any eligible 2026 extension). Request Samsung service before you open any panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.
Fix order at a glance (cheapest first)
| Order | What to try | Cost | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the display: error code or blinking lights? Fix door codes first | Free | Easy |
| 2 | Turn off Child Lock (hold the two labeled buttons 3+ seconds) | Free | Easy |
| 3 | Close and latch the door; clear laundry from the opening | Free | Easy |
| 4 | Time Dry countdown test (touch and hold Start) | Free | Easy |
| 5 | Reset once: unplug or breaker off 1–5 minutes (2–3 minutes for 3C) | Free | Easy |
| 6 | Check power or gas supply (Samsung's dryer FAQ) | Free | Easy |
| 7 | Hand-turn test (unplugged): loose drum = belt; stiff = rollers or glides | Free | Easy |

| 9 | Replace drum rollers or front glides | Part only | Advanced |
| 10 | Door switch | Part, or pro visit | Moderate |
| 11 | Drive motor or control (3C, hum) | Pro diagnosis first | Advanced |
DIY tiers: Easy (no panels off) · Moderate (a panel off, power off) · Advanced (drum out or wiring) · Pro only (gas, mains wiring, or still under warranty).
Which Samsung dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame or on the back. You need it for the right belt, idler, and roller kit.
| Model prefix (examples) | Fuel | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DVE (e.g. DVE47CG3500W) | Electric | 240 V, large 3- or 4-prong plug |
| DVG (e.g. DVG47CG3500W) | Gas | Gas line plus a 120 V plug; gas parts are pro-only |
| DV + other letters (some Bespoke, combo, or heat-pump models) | Check the label | Combo and heat-pump designs differ; check the manual |
| Stacked / FlexDry / Bespoke AI combo | Check the label | Same checks; harder access, consider a pro |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. If your model has no digital display, it shows errors as blinking lights, and you can't do the timer test; Samsung says go straight to service if it won't spin.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Read the display. Samsung says to troubleshoot any error code or blinking lights first; for example, a door that isn't closed stops the cycle.
- Child Lock. If the baby or smiley-lock icon is lit, hold the two labeled buttons 3 seconds or more, or cut power for 60 seconds.
- Latch the door. Samsung's door codes mean the latch or sensor isn't reading closed. Check the latch is securely fixed, nothing is caught in the door, and it's closed and secured.
- Run the countdown test. Time Dry, touch and hold Start, watch the timer for 1–2 minutes.
- Power and gas. Samsung's dryer FAQ lists checking power or gas connections and that the door is fully closed as the first steps when a dryer stops working.
- Reset once. Unplug or switch off the breaker, wait 1–5 minutes, power back on. Samsung says do this after troubleshooting, not before, and not repeatedly.
- Listen and hand-turn (unplugged). Motor running but drum still = belt or idler. Drum stiff = rollers or glides. Hum with no movement = stop; it may be the motor.
How to know it's fixed: a 10-minute Time Dry with a few towels tumbles the whole time, the timer counts down, and no code appears.
Samsung dryer codes linked to "not spinning"
Samsung's US dryer error-code guide:
| Code | Samsung's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| dC, dE, dF, do, d0, 1 DC, 1 dF | Door-related: the door, its latch, or the sensors that detect them | Check the latch is fixed, nothing is caught, door closed; request service if it can't be corrected or the door or latch is damaged |
| 3C | Motor error | Power off 2–3 minutes, power on, restart; check the manual; request service if it returns |
| Temperature codes (tC, tE family) | Temperature or sensor issue; most often a clogged lint screen or vent trapping heat | Clean the lint screen and vent; request service if it continues |
| dn | Firmware download in progress | Wait; the dryer restarts itself; request service if it's still showing after 24 hours |
| Blinking lights (no display) | Errors on models without a digital display | See Samsung's blinking-lights guide or the manual |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dE / d0 / dC | Door latch, door switch | Close firmly; clear the opening | Door switch or latch | Moderate |
| 3C | Drive motor or motor circuit | Power off 2–3 min | Motor diagnosis | Pro only |
| tC / tE | Lint and vent airflow | Clean screen and vent | Sensor | Moderate |
Code meanings from Samsung's US "Samsung dryer displays an error code" guide (source 2). Codes vary by model; your user manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer. On a gas model, close the gas valve. Belt and roller work usually means removing the top and front panels and lifting the drum out; follow your model's service steps.
1. Timer counts down, motor runs, drum doesn't turn (spins freely by hand)
Likely causes: a broken or slipped drum belt, or a worn idler pulley (the tensioner) that let it come off.
Signs: air moves and the timer runs, but the drum stays still; it turns with almost no effort; a squeal or thump before it stopped.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
Tip: if the idler wobbles, is worn flat, or doesn't spin freely, replace it with the belt. Some Samsung models also have a belt switch that stops the dryer when the belt breaks.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum belt | Turns the drum from the motor pulley | Moderate |
| Idler assembly / spring | Keeps the belt tight | Moderate |
| Belt switch (some models) | Stops the dryer if the belt breaks | Moderate |
2. Drum stiff by hand, thumps, scrapes, or squeals
Likely causes: worn drum support rollers, worn front glides, or a damaged front support gasket. HomeGuide lists overloading, drum misalignment, and corrosion as common causes of roller damage.
Signs: thumping or scraping for weeks before it stopped; stiff drum with the belt off; the drum sits low at the front.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (drum out). Replace rollers as a set.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum support rollers | Carry the drum | Advanced |
| Drum front glides | Low-friction pads at the front | Advanced |
| Drum front support gasket | Seals and supports the drum front | Advanced |
3. 3C code, hum with no movement, or nothing runs
Likely causes: the drive motor or its circuit, an open door switch, or a blown thermal fuse on models where it stops the run circuit.
Signs: 3C returns after the 2–3 minute power-off; a hum and no rotation (stop within seconds); timer won't count down even with the door latched and Child Lock off.
DIY difficulty: Moderate for the door switch; Advanced for the motor.
About the thermal fuse: HomeGuide notes a blocked vent typically causes a dryer's thermal fuse to blow, and it can't be reset, only replaced. Clean the vent before you replace one.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the belt and blower | Advanced |
| Door switch | Tells the control the door is shut | Moderate |
| Thermal fuse | One-time overheat cutoff | Moderate |
Timer counts down and the drum won't turn? That's Samsung's own "request service" point. A technician can check the belt, idler, rollers, and motor in one visit.

Prevent it next time
- Don't overload. Fixr says belts break under too much stress; HomeGuide lists overloading as a common cause of roller damage.
- Clean the lint filter every load and keep the vent clear (Samsung's dryer FAQ). A blocked vent can blow the thermal fuse (HomeGuide).
- Run Samsung's Vent Blockage Test periodically on models that have it (see our Samsung dryer takes too long guide).
- Act on new noises. Squeals and thumps are early roller and idler warnings.
- Don't reset repeatedly. Let a technician see the stored codes.

What Samsung's warranty covers on a dryer
Per Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page:
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor (standard manufacturer's warranty) | Samsung |
| Limited-time | Free 2-year extended warranty on eligible appliances bought July 9 to December 31, 2026 at participating retailers; claim form required, redeemed through SmartThings | Check your terms |
| Motor | Samsung's page lists 10-year Digital Inverter Motor coverage for washers and dryers, but its footnote limits it to washers bought on or after 4/1/2026. Check your dryer's own warranty card | Check your terms |
What this means for a dryer that won't spin: a failed belt, idler, roller, switch, or motor in year 1 (or an eligible extended period) is covered. Child Lock, a door not latched, or a blocked vent aren't defects; Samsung excludes improper installation and routine maintenance. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1, the 2026 extended offer if eligible, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Free fixes done: code, Child Lock, door, countdown test, one reset, power or gas.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech will check the idler and rollers while the drum is out.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Samsung part numbers (DC-series and Samsung-numbered parts) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Other-brand parts in the same results were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless noted, not Samsung-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12-year and HomeGuide's 8–13-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 1-year-old Samsung dryer "won't spin." The Child Lock icon was lit; holding the two lock buttons for 3 seconds fixed it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Samsung dryer's timer counts down but the drum doesn't turn. A tech replaces the belt and idler: R = $240; N = $950; no other repairs.
240 ÷ 950 = 25%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 25% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Samsung dryer shows 3C after a reset; the tech quotes a motor and rollers: R = $520; N = $850. It had a $250 heating element last year.
520 ÷ 850 = 61%; life used 10 ÷ 10 = 100%; repeat check (520 + 250) ÷ 850 = 91% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a motor on a dryer near 10 years old, repeated repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a belt, idler, rollers, glides, or a switch; the dryer is under about 8 years old; or it's inside Samsung's warranty or the 2026 extension.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.
Who services Samsung dryers near you
1. Samsung (warranty or official service). Samsung's own guide sends a dryer that counts down but won't spin to service.
→ Samsung US Support: request a repair (chat and the Samsung Members app are also listed)
2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them whether the timer counts down, any code, whether the drum turns easily or stiffly by hand, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. An electrician. If a breaker keeps tripping or the outlet or cord is scorched.
4. DIY with the right part. Belts, idlers, and rollers are common DIY jobs. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did the timer count down in the Time Dry test?
- Is it the belt, idler, rollers, or motor? How did you confirm it?
- Will you check the rollers and glides while the drum is out?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans cap appliance payouts, and a dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my Samsung dryer not spinning?
Samsung says it usually means service is required, but first check for an error code, make sure Child Lock is off, and run the Time Dry test: hold Start and see whether the timer counts down. If it counts down and the drum doesn't turn, request service.
My Samsung dryer turns on but won't start. What should I check?
Door codes (dE, d0, dC and similar), Child Lock (baby or smiley-lock icon), and whether you're holding Start rather than tapping it. Cutting power for 60 seconds also clears Child Lock.
What does 3C mean on a Samsung dryer?
Samsung lists 3C as a motor error. Power off for 2 to 3 minutes, power on, and restart; if it comes back, request service.
Should I reset my Samsung dryer?
Once, after troubleshooting: unplug or switch off the breaker for 1 to 5 minutes. Samsung says repeated resets wipe the error history a technician needs.
Why does my Samsung dryer drum spin freely by hand but not on its own?
That usually means the belt has broken or slipped off, often because the idler pulley wore out.
How much does it cost to fix a Samsung dryer that won't spin?
Fixr puts belt replacement at $150 to $250 and HomeGuide at $100 to $250. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Samsung dryer belts were listed at about $39 to $149 and drive motors at about $236 to $366.
Is a Samsung dryer worth fixing if the motor failed?
If it's under about 8 years old or still under warranty, often yes. Near 10 years, compare the quote with a new dryer using the calculator above.
