Quick answer

First decide which problem you have. Samsung splits it in two:

A. Dead: the panel won't light at all. Samsung says the most common cause is the power supply:

  1. Breaker off, then unplug and look at the plug, cord, and outlet for burn marks or damage. On electric dryers, check the cord is installed correctly and nothing is loose.
  2. Breaker fully off for 30 seconds, then on. A tripped breaker can look like it's on. Electric dryers use a two-part, 30-amp, 240-volt circuit that can be "half-tripped"; turn both off for 30 seconds. Gas dryers use a 15-amp circuit and a regular 3-prong outlet.
  3. Gas dryer only: test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger. If the drum light comes on when you open the door, the outlet works.
  4. Burn marks, a loose or wrong cord install, or a breaker that keeps tripping? Samsung says stop and call a licensed electrician.

B. It lights up but won't start a cycle.

  1. Error code or blinking lights? Fix that first. dC, dE, dF, do, d0 mean the door isn't closed or latched, or something is caught in it.
  2. Child Lock stops the Start button. The icon looks like a baby or a lock with a smiley face. Hold the two labeled buttons for 3+ seconds, or cut power for 60 seconds.
  3. Touch and hold Start. Select Time Dry, hold Start, and watch the timer. If it doesn't count down in 1–2 minutes, the cycle didn't start; check the door and Child Lock and try again.
  4. Timer counts down but the drum doesn't turn? Samsung says request service.

Repair or replace? Power and settings are free. A thermal fuse or door switch is cheap. A motor or board on an older dryer is where the calculator matters.

Which Samsung dryer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door opening (check yours).

TypeModel prefix (examples)Power supply (Samsung)Notes
ElectricUsually DVE (check label)Two-part 30-amp circuit, special 240-volt outlet; cord installed on the dryerCan be "half-tripped"
GasUsually DVG (check label)15-amp circuit, regular 3-prong outletTest the outlet with a lamp
Digital displayVaries (check label)—Shows codes and the countdown timer
No displayVaries (check label)—Shows codes as blinking lights; skip the countdown test (Samsung)

Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your user manual shows which two buttons turn off Child Lock on your model.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Dark panel? Go to the breaker panel. Switch the dryer breaker fully off, wait 30 seconds, then on. Electric: do both sides.
  2. Gas dryer? Open the door. If the drum light comes on, the outlet works. If not, plug a lamp into that outlet.
  3. Code on the display? dC, dE, dF, do, d0 → open the door, clear any clothing from the latch, close it firmly.
  4. Child Lock icon lit? Hold the two labeled buttons for 3 seconds, or cut power for 60 seconds.
  5. Countdown test: pick Time Dry, touch and hold Start, and watch. 40 should drop to 39 after a minute.
  6. Still nothing? Reset: unplug or switch off the breaker for 1–5 minutes, then power up. Samsung says do this after the steps above, not first.

How to know it's fixed: the timer counts down and the drum turns.

What Samsung says vs. what Samsung says (support pages and the manual)

Samsung's pages give different waits and button instructions. Here they are side by side:

TopicSamsung page or manualWhat it says
How long to cut power"Loses power or won't turn on"Breaker off 30 seconds
"Turns on but will not start or spin" (Child Lock)Unplug or breaker off 60 seconds
"How to reset your Samsung dryer"Off 1 to 5 minutes
"Displays an error code" (other codes such as 3C, 1 AC7)Off 2–3 minutes; communication codes: off 60 seconds
When to resetReset pageAfter troubleshooting; resetting clears the code memory, and don't keep clearing a code that returns, because the tech needs that history
Error code page (codes not listed)Power off and restart is the first step
How to press StartSupport page; DVE45T6000W/A3 manualTouch and hold Start ("Hold to Start")
DVE45T3200W/A3 manual (third-party copy)"Press or tap START/PAUSE"
Warranty motor coverageSamsung warranty page headline"Washers and dryers include 10-year coverage" on the Digital Inverter motor
Same page, footnoteThe 10-year warranty is limited to washers bought 4/1/26 or later

What we suggest: cut power for the longest wait listed (5 minutes) once, after the other checks. Always hold Start; it works on both styles. Don't count on 10-year motor coverage for a dryer unless your own warranty sheet says so.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn off the breaker and unplug the dryer. For gas, close the gas valve. Test parts with a multimeter for continuity only when the dryer is unplugged.

1. Dead panel, breakers and outlet fine, and the vent was clogged

Likely cause: a thermal fuse or thermal cut-off. HomeGuide (a cost guide, not Samsung) says the thermal fuse stops the motor when the dryer overheats, can't be reset, and is typically blown by a blocked vent. Samsung's own pages don't name the part, but they do say a vent blockage can make the dryer shut itself off as a safety measure.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

2. Door code won't clear even with the door firmly shut

Likely cause: the door switch or latch. Samsung says to request service if the code can't be corrected or the door or latch is damaged.

3. Timer counts down but the drum never turns; maybe a hum or 3C

Likely cause: the drive motor, or a broken belt. Samsung says if the timer counts down and the drum doesn't spin, request service. Cost guides list humming and a drum that won't turn as motor signs (Fixr, HomeGuide).

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

4. AC or 1 AC7 keeps coming back; buttons ignored

Power's on, door's latched, still nothing? A technician can test the fuse, switch, motor, and board in one visit. Don't keep resetting a returning code first: Samsung says it wipes the history the tech needs.

Recalls

Our searches of cpsc.gov this session found Samsung washer recalls (top-load washers in 2016 and 2022) but no Samsung dryer recall. One third-party repair blog describes a 2023 Samsung dryer recall, but we could not find it on cpsc.gov, so we don't repeat its model list. Search your exact model on cpsc.gov/Recalls and ask Samsung support (1-800-726-7864) before paying for a repair.

What Samsung's warranty covers on a dryer

Per Samsung's US home appliance warranty page (re-read 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from purchase)Parts and labor for manufacturer defectsSamsung
Year 2 (promotion)Samsung advertises a free extra year on eligible appliances, including dryers, bought July 9 to December 31, 2026 at participating retailers; you must submit a claim formPer the offer terms
10-year motorThe headline lists washers and dryers, but the footnote limits it to the Digital Inverter Motor of washers bought 4/1/26 or laterCheck your sheet

What this means for a dryer that won't start: a failed fuse, switch, motor, or board in year 1 is covered. Samsung's warranty doesn't cover improper installation (for example, a cord installed wrong), power surges, or routine maintenance such as cleaning. Keep your proof of purchase. Samsung support: 1-800-726-7864.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; the 2026 extension offer if you bought recently; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: breaker (both sides), cord and outlet look, Child Lock, held Start, door latched, countdown test, one reset.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Samsung part numbers (DC-series and similar) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "samsung dryer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; other brands' parts were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not Samsung-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech whether the panel lights, whether the timer counts down, and any code. That narrows it to power, a door part, the motor, or the board before they arrive.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12 and HomeGuide's 8–13 ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Samsung electric dryer is dead after a thunderstorm. One side of its double breaker had tripped. Turning both off for 30 seconds and back on fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Samsung dryer shows dC even with the door shut. A tech replaces the door switch: R = $180; N = $900.
180 ÷ 900 = 20%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50%; repeat check 20% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Samsung dryer keeps showing 1 AC7 after resets; it had a motor last year ($350). The tech quotes a control board: R = $430; N = $900.
430 ÷ 900 = 48%; life used 10 ÷ 10 = 100%; repeat check (430 + 350) ÷ 900 = 87% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board plus a motor on an older dryer, repeated failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fuse or switch; the dryer is under about 6 years old (HomeGuide says repairs make sense under 4 to 6 years for minor fixes); or it's covered.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and HomeGuide uses it too (repair "when the cost to fix it is less than half of the cost of a replacement"). Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

FAQ

Why won't my Samsung dryer turn on at all?
Samsung says it's usually the power supply. Turn the breaker fully off for 30 seconds and back on (both sides on electric dryers), and check the plug, cord, and outlet for damage.

Why does my Samsung dryer turn on but not start?
Most often Child Lock, a door that isn't latched (dC and similar codes), or Start tapped instead of held. Use Samsung's Time Dry countdown test to confirm the cycle starts.

How do I turn off Child Lock on a Samsung dryer?
Press and hold the two buttons labeled for Child Lock for 3 or more seconds, or cut power for 60 seconds.

How do I reset a Samsung dryer?
Unplug it or turn off the breaker for 1 to 5 minutes. Samsung says to troubleshoot first and not to keep clearing a code that returns.

What does 9C1 mean on a Samsung dryer?
Abnormal supply voltage. Use its own circuit and no extension cord. On a stacked pair with a multi-control kit, Samsung offers a software update.

Does a Samsung dryer have a thermal fuse?
Samsung's support pages don't name one, but Sears PartsDirect lists Samsung thermal cut-off fuses (for example DC47-00015A). HomeGuide says a blocked vent typically blows a dryer's thermal fuse.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung dryer that won't start?
Often nothing. Fixr puts a won't-start repair at $50 to $450. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, a Samsung door switch was $48.12 and control boards ran about $173 to $273.

Should I replace a Samsung dryer that won't start?
Rarely for a fuse or switch. Consider it when a board or motor quote passes half the price of a new dryer on a dryer near 10 years old.
