Quick answer

Frigidaire's checklist, cheapest first:

  1. Electric dryer: check both house breakers or fuses. Frigidaire: an electric dryer's circuit has two house fuses or breakers. If one trips, the drum still turns but the heater won't work. Reset the breaker fully off, then on, or replace the fuse.
  2. Is Air Fluff selected? On Air Fluff, the dryer tumbles without heat. Pick a heated cycle (Frigidaire suggests low or medium heat and Normal Dry for most loads).
  3. Is it really 240 V? Have an electrician confirm 240 V at the outlet. On a 208 V circuit, Frigidaire says drying takes about 20% longer.
  4. Gas dryer: is the gas on? Make sure the gas supply valve is open, the LP tank isn't empty, and there's no natural gas interruption. Keep laundry and rugs away from the front and back so the burner gets air.
  5. Clean the lint screen before every load, and check the exhaust duct and outside vent hood for blockages. A restricted vent makes the dryer overheat and can trip safety devices.
  6. Look for a code on electronic models: E64 (heater open circuit), E65 (high-limit thermostat tripping too often, often from vent restriction), E66 (thermal limiter open), EF1 (vent blocked).

If those don't fix it, electric models usually need a thermal limiter (Frigidaire: a service technician must replace it after the fault is corrected), a heating element, or a thermostat. Gas models usually need an igniter or gas valve coils.

Repair or replace? Most no-heat calls are a breaker, a setting, or a vent. A thermal limiter, element, or igniter is a moderate repair and usually worth it. See the calculator below.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Cycle. Make sure Air Fluff isn't selected. Try Normal Dry on medium heat.
  2. Breakers (electric). Find the dryer's double breaker. Turn it fully off, then on. If you have fuses, check both.
  3. Gas (gas models). Open the supply valve; check the LP tank level.
  4. Lint screen. Clean it before every load. If it looks waxy (fabric softener sheets), wash it in warm, soapy water and dry it completely. Never run the dryer without it.
  5. Exhaust. Check that the duct isn't crushed or kinked, and that the outside hood damper opens when the dryer runs. Frigidaire: no screen over the hood, and keep at least 12 in between the hood and the ground.
  6. Duct spec. Frigidaire's guide: at least 4 in diameter, rigid or semi-rigid metal, no more than four 90ยฐ bends, and within the length listed in the Installation Instructions.
  7. Load. Not too big, not too small. Items need room to tumble.
  8. Moisture sensor bars. Dryer-sheet residue can fool the sensor into ending cycles early. Wipe the bars with rubbing alcohol.
  9. Closet installs. A dryer in a closet or under a counter may not get enough ventilation.

How to know it's fixed: the drum feels warm within a few minutes on a heated cycle, warm air comes out of the outside vent, and a normal load dries in a normal time.

Codes and clues from Frigidaire's US owner support articles "My dryer is running, but does not seem to be heating" and "Dryer - Not Drying and Extended Drying Time", the Frigidaire dryer Use & Care guide A29259201, and a Frigidaire dryer tech data sheet (sources 1โ€“4), checked 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 11) maps Samsung and LG codes to components and DIY difficulty; it has no Frigidaire entries, so we didn't use it here.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (electric dryers also need the breaker off), and close the gas valve on gas models. Let the dryer cool. Frigidaire recommends an authorized servicer for repairs inside the cabinet.

1. Electric dryer tumbles but stays cold (breakers are fine)

Likely causes: a tripped thermal limiter (Frigidaire: it turns off the motor in an overheating event on electric models and must be replaced by a technician after the cause is fixed), an open heating element (E64), or a failed thermostat.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Thermal limiterCuts power if the dryer overheatsAdvanced
Heating elementHeats the air (electric)Advanced
High-limit / operating thermostatControls and limits heatAdvanced

2. Heats a little, takes forever, or shows E65 / EF1

Likely causes: a restricted vent (the tech sheet lists high vent restriction first for E65 and EF1), a clogged lint screen, a long or crushed duct, or a stuck hood damper. A failing high-limit thermostat can follow.

What to do: clean the screen and vent. Frigidaire's guide says an authorized servicer should clean the cabinet interior and exhaust duct every 18 months.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Exhaust duct / vent hoodCarries hot, moist air outsideModerate
High-limit thermostatShuts off heat when air gets too hotAdvanced

3. Gas dryer: no heat with the gas on

Likely causes: a failed igniter, failed gas valve coils, or a tripped thermal limiter (E66 on some models).

DIY difficulty: Pro only. Gas work belongs to a qualified technician.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
IgniterLights the burnerPro only
Gas valve coil kitOpens the gas valvePro only

4. Error codes for sensors or the control

Likely causes: a thermistor (E71โ€“E74) or the electronic control board. Frigidaire's Use & Care guide says to call service for PCB and temperature-sensor errors; a failed humidity sensor still lets the dryer run Manual cycles.

DIY difficulty: Pro only.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a dryer

Per the Major Appliance Warranty in Frigidaire's US dryer Use & Care guide A29259201 (see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All costs to repair or replace any part that's defective in materials or workmanship, when installed, used, and maintained per the instructionsElectrolux

What this means for no heat: in year 1, a failed element, limiter, igniter, or board is covered. Frigidaire's warranty doesn't cover service calls to correct the installation (duct length, bends, 208 V, gas hookup) or to instruct you how to use the appliance (Air Fluff), damage from external causes such as an inadequate power supply, or drum damage from foreign objects. Warranty terms can differ by model, so check your own guide.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: cycle, breakers, gas valve and tank, lint screen, duct and hood, load size, sensor bars.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines. If a thermal limiter blew, ask what caused it, and get the vent fixed too.

Tip: a blown thermal limiter is a symptom. If the vent stays restricted, the new one will blow too.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 11 years, inside HomeGuide's 8โ€“13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. If the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old Frigidaire electric dryer tumbles cold after a storm. One half of the double breaker tripped. Resetting it fixes the heat. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Frigidaire shows E64. A tech replaces the heating element and cleans the vent: R = $300; N = $850; no other repairs.
300 รท 850 = 35%; life used 6 รท 11 = 55%; repeat check 35% โ†’ Repair is usually fine (top-right box).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 12-year-old Frigidaire gas dryer needs an igniter and a control board: R = $520. It needed a drum belt and rollers last year for $220. N = $900.
520 รท 900 = 58%; life used 12 รท 11 = over 100%; repeat check (520 + 220) รท 900 = 82% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: the dryer is 10+ years old, it needs a board, or a second repair within about 2 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a limiter, thermostat, element, igniter, or coils, the drum and motor are quiet, or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude vent cleaning and venting problems. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Frigidaire dryer running but not heating?
On electric models, Frigidaire says one of the two house breakers or fuses may be tripped or blown. Also check that Air Fluff isn't selected, that you have 240 V, and on gas models that the gas valve is open.

What does E64 mean on a Frigidaire dryer?
On models covered by Frigidaire's tech data sheet, E64 is a heater open circuit: the heating element or its wiring.

What does E65 mean?
The high-limit thermostat is tripping too often, often from a restricted vent. Clean the vent first.

What does EF1 mean?
Vent blocked. Clean the lint screen, duct, and outside hood.

Can I replace the thermal limiter myself?
Frigidaire says a service technician must replace the thermal limiter after correcting the fault that tripped it.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Frigidaire says an authorized servicer should clean the cabinet interior and exhaust duct every 18 months.

How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire dryer that won't heat?
Often nothing. OEM Frigidaire/Electrolux heating elements were about $77 to $131 and igniters about $72 to $147 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Fixr puts fixing a dryer that doesn't heat at $100 to $350.
