Quick answer

Start with the load and the drum test. GE Appliances' US support article "Dryer - Drum Does Not Turn" gives two checks:

  1. Not overloaded. GE says a load of heavy, wet clothes such as towels or jeans can make the drive belt slip. Take some out and try again.
  2. Turn the drum by hand (unplugged). If it turns freely, GE says the belt may be broken or loose and service will be required.

If nothing runs at all, GE's "Will Not Run or Start" checks come next:

Not a fault: GE's manual says Control Lock (hold the paired buttons 3 seconds), a sleeping panel (press Power), and a paused Delay Dry can look like a dead dryer.

If those don't fix it, the usual parts are the drive belt, the idler pulley, worn drum rollers or glides, the door switch, or the drive motor. A thumping sound means a frayed belt; GE says stop using the dryer until it's serviced.

Repair or replace? Belts, pulleys, rollers, and switches are inexpensive and almost always worth fixing. A motor or board on an older dryer is the main "think about replacing" case.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Load size. Remove a few heavy items and restart. GE says wet towels or jeans can make the belt slip. Its manual also says one or two items alone may not tumble properly, so add a few.
  2. Door and Start. GE: the dryer won't start with the door open. Close it firmly, choose a cycle, and press Start all the way.
  3. Panel. If the screen is dark, press Power. If the lock icon is on, hold the Control Lock pair (Less Time + Wrinkle Care, or ecoDry + Delay Dry, by model) for 3 seconds.
  4. "1" or "2" on the display (2019+). Set the personality: press Start to toggle, 1 = electric, 2 = gas.
  5. Power. Check the breaker(s) or fuses. GE says the dryer should be on a dedicated circuit.
  6. Drum test (unplugged). Turn the drum by hand. GE: if it turns freely, the belt may be broken or loose. If it's very stiff, suspect rollers, glides, or the idler pulley.
  7. Door switch. Look at the switch inside the door opening: scorched or pushed in can stop the dryer (GE).
  8. Objects. Pull the lint filter and look down the opening (gloves on; sharp edges). Check the drum for coins or clips. GE says objects caught in the drum front seal can cause scraping.
  9. Listen. GE: a short start-up squeak is normal; thumping, humming, a squeak after it heats up, or chirping are not.

How to know it's fixed: the drum turns smoothly for a full timed cycle without thumping or squealing.

Too much or too little: GE's load advice cuts both ways

Our take: fill the drum loosely, about one washer load. If the drum spins freely by hand, it's the belt, and GE recommends service.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer. On a gas dryer, leave the gas line connected and don't move the dryer far. Wear gloves; cabinet edges are sharp.

1. Motor runs, drum doesn't turn (spins freely by hand)

Likely cause: a broken or slipped drive belt, often after a worn idler pulley lost tension. GE says service will be required.

DIY difficulty: Advanced (front panel or top off; belt routed around the drum, idler, and motor pulley).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive beltTurns the drumAdvanced
Idler pulleyKeeps the belt tightAdvanced

2. Drum is hard to turn, thumps, scrapes, or squeals

Likely causes: worn drum rollers, a seized idler pulley, worn glides or slides, or a frayed belt. GE says worn or loose drum slides cause metal scraping and need service, and a squeak that starts after the dryer heats up isn't normal.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drum support rollersCarry the back of the drumAdvanced
Drum glides / slidesSupport the front of the drumAdvanced

3. Nothing runs, or it hums but won't start

Likely causes: a scorched or stuck door switch (GE), then the drive motor. A motor that hums without turning can also mean the drum is jammed, so do the hand test first.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (door switch) · Pro only (motor).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door switchLets the dryer run only with the door closedModerate

4. Controls respond oddly, or nothing works with good power

Likely causes: the control board, or on electric models a burned cord or terminal block (GE says replace both).

DIY difficulty: Pro only.

What GE's warranty covers on a dryer

Per the limited warranty printed in GE dryer Owner's Manual 49-3000198-1 (see Sources). Terms vary by model and year, so check your own manual:

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Any part of the dryer that fails because of a defect in materials or workmanshipGE (parts and labor)

What this means for a drum that won't turn: a failed belt, idler pulley, rollers, door switch, motor, or board is covered in year 1. GE's warranty excludes service trips to teach you how to use the product and problems from improper installation, delivery, or maintenance, so Control Lock, the personality setting, an overloaded drum, or a tripped breaker is on you. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; retailer or credit-card extended protection; any GE extended service plan.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: load size, door, Start, Control Lock, personality, breaker(s), drum hand test.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech checked the pulley and rollers while replacing a belt.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are GE "WE" part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "ge dryer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Bosch, and other brands' parts in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not GE-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: if the drum spins freely by hand, say "belt" when you book. Ask the tech to check the idler pulley and rollers while the dryer is open.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ cord, vent, or gas connector)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12-year and HomeGuide's 8–13-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2021 GE electric dryer shows "2" on the display and won't tumble after a power outage. The owner presses Start to toggle to "1" (electric). R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old GE dryer's motor runs but the drum spins freely; the belt broke and the idler pulley is worn. A tech replaces both: R = $230; N = $900; no other repairs.
230 ÷ 900 = 26%; life used 7 ÷ 10 = 70%; repeat check 26% → Repair (check for other wear while it's open).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old GE dryer hums and won't turn; the motor has failed. R = $420; N = $750. A belt and rollers were replaced last year for $250.
420 ÷ 750 = 56%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = 110%; repeat check (420 + 250) ÷ 750 = 89% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a motor or board on a dryer past about 10 years, repeated repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a belt, pulley, rollers, glides, or door switch; the dryer is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude damage from overloading or foreign objects, and a dryer that's already failing is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my GE dryer running but not spinning?
GE says a heavy, wet load can make the drive belt slip, so remove some clothes first. Then unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand: if it turns freely, the belt may be broken or loose, and GE says service will be required.

Why won't my GE dryer start or tumble?
GE's checks: plug fully in, door closed tightly, a cycle selected, Start pressed all the way, a door switch that isn't scorched or pushed in, and working breakers or fuses. On 2019 and newer models showing "1" or "2," set the personality.

What does "1" or "2" mean on my GE dryer display?
GE says some 2019 and newer dryers need their "personality" set and may not turn on or tumble until it is. Press Start to toggle: 1 for electric, 2 for gas.

Why is my GE dryer thumping?
GE says a frayed or damaged belt makes a thumping sound and requires service. Stop using the dryer until it's checked.

Why does my GE dryer squeak?
A short squeak at start-up is normal (GE). A squeak that starts after the dryer heats up, or a short chirp every few seconds, isn't. Worn rollers, glides, or the idler pulley are the usual parts.

Is it normal for my GE dryer to tumble with 00 on the display?
Yes, if Wrinkle Care is on. GE's manual says the extended tumble lasts about 60 minutes and the time isn't displayed.

How much does it cost to fix a GE dryer that won't spin?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, GE dryer belts were listed at about $22 to $181. Fixr puts a belt replacement at $150 to $250 installed.

Should I replace a GE dryer that won't spin?
Rarely for a belt, pulley, rollers, or switch. Consider it for a motor or board on an older dryer, or when repeat repairs pass half the price of a new one.
