LG Dryer Not Spinning? Drum Won't Turn — Door Pause, Load Size, dE, bE, LE1, Reverse Tumble, Belt, Idler, Rollers, Motor — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, rule out the "normal" stops. LG's own help page says the drum isn't always broken when it stops:
- Door opened mid-cycle? The drum stops for safety. On gas models, close the door and press Start/Pause. On electric models, a dE (door) code may show; close the door and press Start/Pause.
- Load too small? Clothes may not touch the moisture sensor, so the dryer skips to air dry and ends early. It can look as if the drum stopped. Add laundry so the drum is about half full.
- Load too big? Clothes swell as they dry and can't tumble; an overloaded drum may not rotate. Take some out.
- Heat-pump or Direct Drive (DD) motor model reversing? Some LG models turn one way, stop, then turn the other way to stop tangling. LG says that's not a malfunction.
- Child Lock or a code? Hold Child Lock 3 seconds to unlock, and look for bE or LE1.
Still won't turn with an empty drum? LG says if the drum doesn't rotate after you empty it and press Start/Pause, it needs service. bE points at the drive belt; LE1 points at the drum motor. Unplug for 60 seconds and restart before you book a visit.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Door was opened; load too small or too big; normal reverse tumbling; Child Lock on; dE that clears when you close the door firmly | Normal behavior or a load issue | ✅ Free fix |
| bE code; drum spins freely by hand; squeal, thump, or scrape then stop; dE that won't clear | Belt, idler pulley, rollers, door switch | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| LE1 after the free checks on an older dryer out of the motor term; motor and board both bad; dryer 10+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Drum motor or repeat failures | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new dryer (check LG's motor term first) |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Burning smell, smoke, or scorch marks. Unplug the dryer or switch off the breaker and call a pro.
- Gas dryer and you smell gas. Leave the area and call your gas utility from outside.
- You'd need to open the cabinet. Unplug the dryer first. Electric LG dryers run on 240 volts; gas models still have a 120-volt plug. Shut the gas valve before moving a gas dryer.
- Stacked or WashTower unit. Getting to the belt means moving or unstacking a heavy appliance. Get help or call a pro.
- The dryer is in its first year. LG covers parts and labor in year 1; don't open it yourself.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair. LG has had a past gas dryer recall (for a fire hazard), so it's worth the minute.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame. The model tells you whether you have an electric, gas, or heat-pump dryer, which changes what "not spinning" looks like.
| Model prefix (examples) | Type | What "not spinning" can look like | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLE, DLEX (check label) | Electric, 240 V | dE code when the door is open; bE or LE1 | Most common LG dryer |
| DLG, DLGX (check label) | Gas, 120 V plug for controls and motor | Interior light on and Start/Pause blinking when the door was opened | Gas parts: pro recommended |
| DLHC (check label) | Electric heat-pump / hybrid | Some models reverse direction on purpose | LE1 shows on a real motor fault |
| WashTower / stacked | Electric or gas (check label) | Same | Harder access; consider a pro |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Use your own model number when you order parts.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Close the door firmly and press Start/Pause. If the drum starts, it was a door pause.
- Look at the load. LG says aim for about half full. A couple of items may end the cycle early; a packed drum may not tumble.
- Watch for a full minute. On some models, the drum turns one way for several minutes, stops, turns the other way briefly, and stops again. LG says that's by design.
- Child Lock: if the display shows a lock icon and buttons don't respond, hold Child Lock for 3 seconds.
- Lint filter: LG's reverse-tumble page says if a motor error shows, check the lint filter is fitted and the load size.
- Codes: note any dE, bE, or LE1. Unplug the dryer for 60 seconds, plug it back in, and restart.
- Empty drum test: take everything out and press Start/Pause. LG says if it rotates now, the dryer is working normally. If not, it needs service.
- Hand-turn test (unplugged): reach in and turn the drum.
- Turns very easily, no resistance: the belt is likely broken or off.
- Hard to turn, grinds, or thumps: rollers, glides, or the rear bearing.
- Turns normally, but the dryer won't spin it: the idler pulley, motor, door switch, or board.
How to know it's fixed: a half-full load tumbles through a full timed cycle without stopping (other than any normal direction change on your model).
LG's own pages disagree on what to do when the drum stops
LG publishes several help pages about a drum that stops, and they don't send you to the same next step. Here they are side by side.
| LG: "Dryer Drum Not Turning" | LG: "Dryer Error Code List" | LG: heat-pump "drum rotates in the opposite direction" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is it a fault? | Often not: a door pause, a small load ending early, or an overload | bE is a drum belt problem; LE1 is a drum motor problem | Direction changes and stops are normal on some models (10 kg or less, or with a DD motor) |
| What to try | Fix the load (about half full); close the door, press Start/Pause | bE: unplug 60 seconds and restart. LE1: remove some items if the load is heavy | If LE1 shows, check the load size and that the lint filter is fitted |
| When to call | If it doesn't rotate after emptying the drum and pressing Start/Pause | If the code persists | Only if LE1 or a drum motor error shows |
Our take: do all three. Empty the drum, fit the lint filter, unplug for 60 seconds, then restart with a half-full load. If you see bE, expect a belt or idler job. If you see LE1 with an empty drum, it's a motor-side repair, and LG's motor warranty may cover the part (see below). If nothing shows and your heat-pump dryer just changes direction, that's normal.

Codes and steps from LG USA Support (sources 1–4), checked 2026-10-30. The part mapping is our own from those pages and LG's part catalog. We cross-checked the dE, bE, and LE1 meanings against the open ApplianceDB LG dryer sample (source 11), which matches LG's list.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (or switch off the breaker). On gas models, shut the gas valve before moving the dryer.
1. bE code, or the drum spins freely by hand
Likely cause: a broken or slipped drive belt. LG's code list calls bE a drum drive belt problem. If the belt is off rather than broken, look at the idler pulley too: a worn pulley can let the belt slip.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive belt | Wraps the drum and turns it from the motor | Moderate |
| Idler pulley | Keeps tension on the belt | Moderate |
2. Squealing, thumping, or a drum that's hard to turn by hand
Likely cause: worn drum support rollers, front glides, or the rear bearing kit. The motor strains, the belt slips, and the drum slows or stops. These usually go together with noise before the drum quits. See our LG dryer squeaking guide for the noise side.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum support rollers | Hold up the back of the drum | Advanced |
| Drum bearing kit | Rear drum support on some models | Advanced |
3. LE1 with an empty drum, or a motor that hums but won't turn
Likely cause: the drive motor (or what drives it). LG says LE1 means the drum isn't rotating because of a drum motor issue. On models with a Direct Drive or inverter motor, LG's warranty covers motor parts for 10 years (you pay labor after year 1), so call LG before buying a motor.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the belt (and blower) | Advanced |
4. dE that won't clear, or the drum stops whenever you touch the door
Likely cause: a failing door switch, or a door that doesn't latch fully. LG says if dE keeps coming back after you clear the door and lint filter and restart, the dryer needs service.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Door switch | Tells the control the door is shut | Moderate |
5. Display works, no code, motor silent
Likely cause: after the door switch and motor check out, the main control board. Boards are expensive and easy to misdiagnose, so have a tech test the motor circuit first.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Main control board | Runs the motor and cycle | Pro only |
Call a pro if: it's a gas dryer, a stacked or WashTower unit, the drum has to come out, LE1 keeps returning, or the dryer is in year 1.
Prevent it next time
- Fill the drum about half full (LG). Don't stuff it with heavy, wet bedding.
- Don't run tiny loads of one or two items; they can end early.
- Keep the lint filter clean and fully fitted.
- Clean the moisture sensor bars now and then (see your manual), so small loads don't end early.
- Act on squeals and thumps early. Rollers and pulleys are cheaper than a belt plus a motor.
- Keep the area behind the dryer clear, so the vent isn't crushed when you push it back.

What LG's warranty covers on a dryer
LG's 2026 US dryer limited warranty (see Sources):
| Period (from purchase or delivery) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Years 1–3 | Dryer drum (part only) | You |
| Years 1–10 | Direct Drive / inverter motor parts on models that have one (part only) | You |
What this means for a drum that won't spin: belts, pulleys, rollers, door switches, and boards are covered only in the first year. But an LE1 motor fault on a model with a Direct Drive or inverter motor may get a free motor part for up to 10 years, and a failed drum for up to 3 years, so you'd only pay labor. LG's warranty excludes failures from incorrect electrical voltage, improper installation, and "inadequate supply of air." Keep your proof of purchase.
→ Check your model's warranty on LG's site · Schedule an LG repair
Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; the 10-year motor-parts and 3-year drum terms; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: door closed and Start/Pause; half-full load; reverse tumble ruled out; Child Lock; lint filter; 60-second unplug; empty-drum test; hand-turn test.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which code or test pointed to the part.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, and generic part numbers in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means the searches didn't return that LG part, or the guides don't itemize the job, so we don't show a price.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers, such as a motor part in the 10-year term)
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10–11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year average for dryers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Ask about the rollers and pulley too |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG heat-pump dryer "keeps stopping." It's the normal reverse rotation, and the owner was also drying just two shirts. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG electric dryer shows bE, and the drum spins freely by hand. A tech replaces the belt and idler pulley: R = $220; N = $900.
220 ÷ 900 = 24%; life used 6 ÷ 11 = 55% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG dryer without a Direct Drive motor shows LE1 with an empty drum; the tech quotes a motor plus rollers, a year after a control board ($300): R = $480; N = $900.
480 ÷ 900 = 53% (second-quote zone); life used 11 ÷ 11 = 100%; repeat check (480 + 300) ÷ 900 = 87% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a motor and a board, a dryer past about 10 years and out of the motor term, or a second major repair within a year or two.
Tips toward repairing: it's a belt, pulley, roller, or door switch; the dryer is in year 1; the motor part is in LG's 10-year term; or it's part of a matched pair or WashTower.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.
Who services LG dryers near you
1. LG (warranty or official service). In year 1, or for a motor part in the 10-year term or a drum in the 3-year term, start with LG. Have your model, serial number, and proof of purchase ready.
→ LG US: schedule a repair
2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them the code (bE, LE1, dE) and what the hand-turn test felt like; it speeds up the diagnosis.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. DIY with the right part. Belts, idler pulleys, and door switches are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Rollers and bearings mean taking the drum out. Order by your exact model number, and unplug first.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Which code or test pointed to this part?
- Does my model have a Direct Drive or inverter motor covered by LG's 10-year parts term?
- If the belt is off, did you check the idler pulley and rollers too?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by overloading, improper installation, and lack of maintenance such as vent cleaning. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why did my LG dryer stop spinning mid-cycle?
LG lists three common reasons: the door was opened (the drum stops for safety), the load was too small and missed the moisture sensor so the cycle ended early, or the load was too big to tumble. Fix the load to about half full, close the door, and press Start/Pause.
Why does my LG dryer spin backwards?
Some LG models, including heat-pump and Direct Drive models, are designed to reverse direction now and then to stop clothes tangling. LG says that's normal. On the Normal cycle, it turns one way for 4 to 7 minutes and the other way for about 10 seconds.
What does bE mean on an LG dryer?
A drum drive belt problem. LG says unplug the dryer for 60 seconds and restart; if the code comes back, request service. It's usually a broken belt or a failed idler pulley.
What does LE1 mean on an LG dryer?
The drum isn't rotating because of a drum motor issue. Remove some items if the load is heavy, make sure the lint filter is fitted, and restart. If it continues, the motor or its control needs service. Check LG's 10-year motor-parts term first.
How do I test an LG dryer belt?
Unplug the dryer and turn the drum by hand. If it spins with almost no resistance, the belt is likely broken or off.
My LG dryer shows dE but the door is closed. What now?
Push the lint filter all the way in, clear any clothing from the door, close it firmly, and restart. If dE keeps coming back, LG says the dryer needs service; it's usually the door switch.
Is it worth fixing an LG dryer that won't spin?
Usually yes for a belt, pulley, roller, or door switch. A motor plus a board on a dryer older than about 10 years usually isn't, unless LG's motor term covers the part. Use the calculator above.

Fix It or Replace is an independent site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by LG. "LG" is a trademark of its owner and is used here only to describe the products we cover.
- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the dryer before working on it. Electric dryers run on 240 V. If you smell gas or see scorch marks, stop and call a qualified professional.
We don't publish fake reviews or testimonials, and we never present a tracking phone number as a specific local business.
