Frigidaire Washer Not Spinning? Lid or Door, Unbalanced Load, Leveling, Shipping Bolts, Drain Hose and Lid Lock, Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)

Quick answer

Frigidaire's checklist, cheapest first:

  1. Is the lid (or door) fully closed? Frigidaire's top-load guide: the washer won't spin, or run at all, with the lid open. Close it and press Start/Pause.
  2. Is the load out of balance? Turn the washer off, wait for the lid to unlock, rearrange the load, and restart. For a single heavy item or a small load, add 1โ€“2 similar items (towels) so it can balance.
  3. Is it overloaded? A load that's too large can't spin properly and comes out too wet.
  4. Is it level and firm on the floor? Adjust the leveling legs so it doesn't rock.
  5. New install? Remove the shipping bolts (front load) or the foam shipping support (top load). If it was installed or moved in the last 30 days, Frigidaire says to contact the installer.
  6. Is water draining? A kinked or clogged drain hose, or a standpipe at the wrong height, stops the spin. Frigidaire's E2 article covers "water takes too long to drain."
  7. Did it stop mid-cycle? The motor overload protector shuts the motor off when it overheats. Let it cool before you restart.

If those don't fix it, Frigidaire says a lid lock malfunction (water left in the tub, or drain and spin didn't happen) needs an authorized servicer, and you should never bypass the lid lock. Other likely parts are the drain pump and the motor control board.

Repair or replace? A lid switch, lid lock, or drain pump is a modest repair. A drive motor on an older washer is where replacing starts to make sense. See the calculator below.

Top load or front load?

Your serial plate tells you the model. Frigidaire puts it under the lid on top loaders and inside the door opening on front loaders.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Lid or door. Close it firmly. The washer won't operate with the lid open.
  2. Rebalance. Turn the washer off, wait for the lid to unlock, spread the clothes evenly, and restart. With a single heavy item (a rug or bath mat), add 1โ€“2 towels. Frigidaire warns that waterproof items like rugs and mats can cause a hazardous out-of-balance load in its top loaders.
  3. Load size. Not too big, not too small. Front loads especially may not spin a very small load.
  4. Level. Push on opposite corners. If it rocks, adjust the leveling legs until it rests firmly on all four.
  5. Shipping items. On a new washer, make sure the shipping bolts (front load) or foam shipping support (top load) are out.
  6. Drain. Straighten the drain hose. Make sure the standpipe height fits your guide, and check that the fuse or breaker is on. Frigidaire's E2 article lists these checks.
  7. Detergent (front load). Use HE detergent. Too many suds can keep a front-loader from spinning.
  8. Motor overheated. If it stopped mid-cycle, wait for the motor to cool. Frigidaire's front-load guide says it can restart on its own after up to 30 minutes.
  9. Retest. Run Drain & Spin (or Rinse & Spin) by itself with a balanced load.

How to know it's fixed: the tub ramps up to full speed, the cycle finishes on time, and clothes come out damp, not dripping.

Meanings from Frigidaire's US owner support articles "Top Load Washer Tub is Not Spinning", "E4 Error Code on Front Load Washer" (out of balance) and "E2 Error Code" (slow drain), and from Frigidaire/Electrolux US owner's guides (sources 1โ€“6), checked 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 12) maps Samsung and LG codes to components and DIY difficulty; it has no Frigidaire entries, so we didn't use it here.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer. Turn off both water faucets. If there's water in the tub, drain it (front load: through the pump filter or drain hose, if your model has one) and keep towels and a shallow pan nearby.

1. Lid closed, but it won't start the spin

Likely causes: a lid switch that doesn't sense the lid, or a lid lock that doesn't lock. Frigidaire: the washer won't run with the lid open, and a lid lock malfunction means drain and spin don't happen.

Signs: the lid-locked light never comes on; the washer fills and agitates but stops before spinning.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (Frigidaire recommends an authorized servicer for lid lock problems).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Lid switchTells the control the lid is closedModerate
Lid lock / door lockLocks the lid or door for spinModerate

2. Water stays in the tub, then no spin

Likely causes: a kinked or clogged drain hose, a standpipe problem, a drain pump that's clogged (Frigidaire's front-load guide mentions coins in the pump) or failed, or the lid lock.

Signs: E2 or a drain-time error; humming with no water moving.

DIY difficulty: Easy for the hose; Advanced for the pump.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pumpPumps water out before the spinAdvanced
Pump filter (some front loads)Catches coins and lintModerate

3. Starts to spin, then slows and stops

Likely causes: out of balance (E4), not level, shipping items still in place, or a load that's too small or too big.

What to do: rebalance, add 1โ€“2 similar items, level, and check for shipping bolts or foam. If it's in its first 30 days after install, call the installer. After 30 days, Frigidaire says to contact service.

4. Hums or clicks, and the tub never turns

Likely causes: motor overheated (wait), a failed motor control board, or the drive motor.

DIY difficulty: Pro only. These need electrical testing.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Motor control boardDrives the motorPro only
Drive motorTurns the tubPro only

5. Front load: suds, and no spin

Likely cause: oversudsing from non-HE detergent or too much detergent.

What to do: use HE detergent in the right amount, and run a rinse and spin with no detergent to clear the suds.

Load balanced, lid closed, hose clear, and it still won't spin? A technician can test the lid lock, pump, and motor control in one visit.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a washer

Per the Frigidaire/Electrolux US owner's guides (see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts that fail from a defect in materials or workmanshipFrigidaire/Electrolux
Wash tub (front-load FFFS5115P guide)Replacement tub for its functional lifeYou (no labor)
Years 2โ€“10: wash tub drive motor (front-load FFFS5115P guide)Replacement motorYou (no labor)

What this means for a spin problem: in year 1, a lid lock, pump, or board is covered with labor. After that, most spin parts are out of pocket, but some front-load models cover the drive motor part through year 10 (you pay labor). Warranty terms vary by model, so check the guide that came with your washer. Frigidaire doesn't cover visits for installation problems or instructions on using the product; in its E4 and E2 articles, washers installed or moved in the last 30 days go back to the installer.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; check for a drive motor part warranty on front loads; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: lid, balance, load size, level, shipping items, drain hose, standpipe, HE detergent, cool-down.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask what failed: lid lock, pump, board, or motor.

Tip: if a balanced Drain & Spin works but full cycles don't, the problem is likely the load or detergent, not a part.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 11 years, inside HomeGuide's 8โ€“13-year average, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. If the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-week-old Frigidaire front loader won't spin a single bath mat. Adding two towels fixes it. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Frigidaire top loader leaves water in the tub; the tech finds a failed lid lock. R = $220; N = $750; no other repairs.
220 รท 750 = 29%; life used 5 รท 11 = 45%; repeat check 29% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Frigidaire front loader hums but won't turn; the tech quotes a drive motor and board, R = $650. It needed a pump last year for $280. N = $1,000.
650 รท 1,000 = 65%; life used 10 รท 11 = 91%; repeat check (650 + 280) รท 1,000 = 93% โ†’ Replace. Check whether the motor part is still under Frigidaire's warranty first.

Tips toward replacing: the washer is 8+ years old, it needs a motor or board, or a second repair within about 2 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lid switch, lid lock, or pump, the drum and bearings are quiet, or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often cap appliance payouts. A washer that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Frigidaire washer not spinning?
Frigidaire's top causes: the lid isn't fully closed, the load is out of balance, too large, or too small, the washer isn't level, shipping materials weren't removed, or the drain is slow.

What does E4 mean on a Frigidaire washer?
Out of balance during spin. Level the washer, remove any foam shipping support, and rebalance the load. The washer tries 3 times before it waits for you.

What does E2 mean on a Frigidaire washer?
Water is taking too long to drain. Check the breaker, standpipe height, that the lid is closed, and the drain hose.

Why won't my Frigidaire front loader spin a small load?
A very small or single-item load can't balance. Add 1โ€“2 similar items.

Can I bypass the lid lock?
No. Frigidaire says never bypass the lid lock or run the washer with a damaged one. Call an authorized servicer.

Why did my Frigidaire washer stop mid-cycle?
The motor may have overheated. Let it cool; Frigidaire's front-load guide says it can restart on its own after up to 30 minutes.

How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire washer that won't spin?
Often nothing. OEM lid switches were about $46 to $52 and drain pumps about $122 to $217 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Fixr puts a lid switch repair at $85 to $160 installed.
