Whirlpool Dryer Not Starting? No Power, Controls Locked, Start Button, Door Latch, Wrinkle Shield, Thermal Fuse, Door Switch, Motor, Board — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most "won't start" calls are a setting or the power. Whirlpool's Product Help lists these checks, cheapest first:
- Power. If the drum light or controls don't light, check the house breakers. Electric dryers use two household fuses or breakers; both must be intact and on. Gas dryers use one. Electric dryers need a 240-volt supply and a correctly installed 3- or 4-wire cord with tight terminal screws (unplug first).
- Controls Locked. If the Control Lock light is on, the controls ignore every touch. Hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds (some models use a different button; see the conflict table below).
- Hold Start. Press and hold Start / Push to Start / Hold to Start for 2–5 seconds. A tap may not engage the motor.
- Touch panels: use a dry fingertip, not a fingernail; wipe moisture off the panel.
- Door latched. It can look shut and not be latched. Push it closed. Some models have an upper and lower latch; both must catch. Check clothing or packing isn't blocking the latch.
- Cycle. Set the knob to an Automatic Dry, AccuDry, or Timed Dry cycle. The dryer won't start on the Wrinkle Shield option.
Power and settings all fine but still nothing? Common parts are a blown thermal fuse (usually from a blocked vent), a failed door switch, start switch or timer, the drive motor, or the control board. Whirlpool's blog says a board fault needs professional diagnosis.
Repair or replace? Fuses and switches are cheap and usually worth fixing. A motor or board on an older dryer is where the calculator matters.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Panel dark after a breaker trip; Control Lock light on; Start tapped not held; door not latched; Wrinkle Shield selected; wet panel; PF on the display | Power, setting, or user step | ✅ Free fix. Reset, unlock, hold Start, latch the door |
| Panel lights but nothing happens; dryer hums but drum doesn't turn; dead after a long, slow-drying stretch | Thermal fuse, door switch, start switch, timer, belt, motor | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| F# E# service code that returns; board quoted on a dryer 10+ years old; burning smell | Control board or motor on an older dryer | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new dryer |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell burning, see scorch marks, or the breaker trips again after a reset. Leave it off; Whirlpool says call an electrician if a breaker or fuse problem continues.
- Gas dryer and you smell gas. Don't touch switches. Leave, and call your gas utility from outside.
- Unplug before any panel comes off, and before checking cord terminal screws (Whirlpool). For gas dryers, close the gas valve too.
- The vent is crushed, disconnected, or packed with lint. A blown thermal fuse is a sign of this. Fix the vent first, or the new fuse will blow too.
- The dryer is under warranty. Use Whirlpool's warranty service before removing panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Whirlpool dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label inside the door opening or on the back of the dryer.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Power supply | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric | Usually WED (check label) | 240 V, two breakers or fuses; 3- or 4-wire cord | One tripped side can stop the motor or the heat |
| Gas | Usually WGD (check label) | One household breaker or fuse | Gas valve affects heat, not starting |
| Knob and push-to-start | Varies (check label) | — | Older models often use a timer and push-to-start switch |
| Touch-panel electronic | Varies (check label) | — | Controls Locked, fingertip, moisture, codes |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual lists your model's Control Lock button and cycle names.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Is anything lit? If the drum light and panel are dark, go to the breaker panel. Electric: find both breakers for the dryer and switch each fully off, then on. Gas: one breaker or fuse.
- Controls Locked light on? Hold the lock button for 3 seconds.
- Hold Start firmly for 2–5 seconds.
- Touch panel: dry your hands and the panel; use your fingertip.
- Door: push it shut until it latches. On models with two latches, press the top and bottom. Look for a sock caught in the latch.
- Cycle knob: move it to Timed Dry and try again. Not Wrinkle Shield alone.
- PF on the display? That's a power failure interrupting the cycle. Whirlpool-family dryers say to touch and hold Start to restart, or press Power to clear.
- Electric dryer, new install or moved? Whirlpool says electric dryers need 240 V. Check the cord is installed per the instructions and terminal screws are tight, unplugged. If in doubt, call an electrician.
How to know it's fixed: the drum turns within a few seconds of holding Start.
What Whirlpool says vs. what Whirlpool says (two Product Help pages and the blog)
Whirlpool's own pages don't agree on two details. Here they are side by side:
| Product Help: "Not Starting or Not Operating - Dryer" | Product Help: "Dryer Not Starting or No Operation" | whirlpool.com blog: "Why Won't My Dryer Start" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How to turn off Controls Locked | Hold the Control Lock button 3 seconds | Press and hold the Cycle Signal button 3 seconds ("on most models") | Unlock using the instructions in your owner's manual |
| Which option blocks the start | Wrinkle Shield | Wrinkle Reduction (some models) | "Incorrect cycle"; check the manual |
| Parts it names | None (settings and power only) | None | Drive belt (motor runs, drum doesn't turn); main control board (pro recommended) |
Our take: try the button labeled Control Lock first; if there isn't one, try Cycle Signal; if neither works, your owner's manual has the answer. "Wrinkle Shield" and "Wrinkle Reduction" are the same idea under different model names: pick a real drying cycle.
Whirlpool dryer codes linked to not starting
| Code | Whirlpool's explanation | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PF | Power failure interrupted the cycle | Touch and hold Start to restart | Check breakers and cord | Easy |
| L2 | Low or no line voltage; heater stays off; dryer keeps running; shows at initial install | Check both breakers or fuses and the cord | Electrician | Easy → Pro |
| F# E# (for example F1 E1) | The control found a problem that needs service | For F1 E1, Whirlpool says breaker off 5 minutes, back on, start Timed Dry, watch 1 minute | Service; often the control board | Pro only |
| AF / F4 E3 | Restricted airflow; dryer keeps running | Clean the lint screen and vent | Vent repair | Easy → Moderate |
Which part each symptom points at:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|
| Panel dead; breakers fine; vent was clogged | Thermal fuse | Moderate |
| Panel lights; drum light off with door open; nothing when Start is held | Door switch | Moderate |
| Knob model; pressing Start does nothing | Push-to-start switch or timer | Moderate |
| Hum when Start is held, drum still | Drive motor (or a jammed drum or belt problem) | Advanced |
| Motor runs, drum doesn't turn | Drive belt (see Whirlpool dryer not spinning) | Advanced |
| Touch panel unresponsive; F# E# | Control board or user interface | Pro only |
Codes from Whirlpool US Product Help (sources 1–5), checked 2026-10-30. The part mapping is our own from those pages, Whirlpool's blog, and the Whirlpool part catalog. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 13) includes Whirlpool US dryer codes, but its entries cite a third-party code site, so we used it only as a cross-check.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer. For gas, close the gas valve. Test parts with a multimeter for continuity only when the dryer is unplugged.
1. Completely dead, breakers fine, the vent was clogged
Likely cause: a blown thermal fuse. It's a one-time safety fuse; it can't be reset. Parts sellers (not Whirlpool) describe it as on the blower housing, and say a blown fuse means the exhaust was restricted, so check the vent when you replace it.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal fuse | Cuts power when the exhaust overheats | Moderate |
2. Panel lights, but holding Start does nothing; drum light doesn't come on with the door open
Likely cause: the door switch isn't telling the control the door is shut. Rule out the latch first (Whirlpool: both latches must catch).
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Door switch | Tells the dryer the door is closed | Moderate |
3. Knob-style dryer; Start button feels dead or loose
Likely cause: the push-to-start switch, or the timer that it signals.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Push-to-start switch | Starts the motor when held | Moderate |
| Timer | Runs the cycle on knob models | Moderate |
4. Hums when you hold Start, but the drum doesn't move
Likely cause: the drive motor (or something jamming the drum). Whirlpool's parts blog says the motor may be the issue if the dryer doesn't start, makes a loud noise, or stops mid-cycle.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the drum and blower | Advanced |
5. Touch panel dead or erratic after everything else checks out; F# E#
Likely cause: the electronic control board or user interface. Whirlpool's blog recommends professional diagnosis.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic control board | Runs the motor, heat, and cycle | Pro only |

Prevent it next time
- Clean the lint screen before every load, and keep the vent clear, which protects the thermal fuse.
- Don't overload the drum; heavy loads strain the belt and motor.
- Know your lock button so a child lock doesn't look like a dead dryer.
- Close the door firmly on models with two latches.
- Keep the panel dry.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a dryer
Per Whirlpool's US warranty overview (re-read 2026-10-30):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from delivery) | Factory-specified parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship | Whirlpool |
| Some models, longer | Some Whirlpool-family laundry warranties add parts-only coverage on specific components after year 1; check your model's warranty sheet | You |
What this means for a dryer that won't start: a failed fuse, switch, motor, or board in year 1 is covered. Whirlpool's major-appliance warranty excludes in-home instruction (for example, showing you how to reset breakers or turn off Controls Locked) and improper installation, which includes venting and electrical supply that don't meet the instructions. Keep your proof of purchase. Whirlpool's customer center is 1-800-253-1301.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; any model-specific parts coverage; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Free fixes done: breakers, Controls Locked, Start held, latch, cycle, cord.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "whirlpool dryer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; other brands' parts and commercial parts were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not Whirlpool-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech whether the panel lights and whether the dryer hums when you hold Start. That narrows it to power, a switch, or the motor before they arrive.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12 and HomeGuide's 8–13 ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Whirlpool electric dryer is dead after the kids used it. The Controls Locked light is on. Holding the lock button for 3 seconds fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Whirlpool electric dryer goes dead after months of long dry times. The thermal fuse is open and the vent is packed with lint. A tech replaces the fuse and cleans the vent: R = $220; N = $900.
220 ÷ 900 = 24%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50%; repeat check 24% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Whirlpool touch-panel dryer shows F# E# and won't start; it had a motor last year ($300). The tech quotes a control board: R = $450; N = $900.
450 ÷ 900 = 50%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = over 100%; repeat check (450 + 300) ÷ 900 = 83% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board plus a motor on an older dryer, repeated failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fuse or switch; the dryer is under about 6 years old; or it's covered.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them whether the panel lights, whether it hums, any code, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check both breakers and the cord first?
- If the thermal fuse blew, did you check the vent?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude vent cleaning and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why won't my Whirlpool dryer start?
Whirlpool's top causes: a tripped breaker (electric dryers use two), Controls Locked on, Start not held 2–5 seconds, the door not fully latched, or Wrinkle Shield selected instead of a drying cycle.
How do I unlock a Whirlpool dryer?
One Whirlpool page says hold Control Lock for 3 seconds; another says hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds on most models. Use whichever your panel has, or check your owner's manual.
My Whirlpool dryer has power but won't start. What's wrong?
After the settings and latch, a door switch, start switch, timer, motor, or control board is most likely. If the panel is dark too, suspect the breakers or the thermal fuse.
Can a thermal fuse stop a Whirlpool dryer from starting?
Parts sellers (not Whirlpool) say yes on many models: a blown fuse can stop the motor circuit. It usually blows because the vent is restricted, so clean the vent too.
Why does my Whirlpool dryer hum but not start?
Often the drive motor, or something jamming the drum. If the motor runs and the drum doesn't turn, Whirlpool's blog points to the drive belt.
What does PF mean on a Whirlpool dryer?
A power failure interrupted the cycle. Touch and hold Start to restart.
How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool dryer that won't start?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool thermal fuses were listed at about $19 to $49 and door switches at about $22 to $131. HomeGuide puts a thermal fuse repair at $75 to $150.
Should I replace a Whirlpool dryer that won't start?
Rarely for a fuse or switch. Consider it when a board or motor quote passes half the price of a new dryer on a dryer near 10 years old.

Fix It or Replace is an independent site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Whirlpool. "Whirlpool" is a trademark of its owner and is used here only to describe the products we cover.
- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the dryer (and shut off gas) before working on it. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
We don't publish fake reviews or testimonials, and we never present a tracking phone number as a specific local business.
