LG Dryer Squeaking or Squealing? Normal Sounds vs Worn Rollers, Idler Pulley or Belt โ Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, decide whether the squeak is normal. LG says a short squeak or squeal when the drum starts, or when it reverses direction, is normal: it's the belt tightening before the drum settles into its rotation. LG also lists light thumping from the rollers (more noticeable after the dryer sat unused), humming from the compressor on heat-pump models, and gurgling from the drain pump on condensing and heat-pump models as normal.
It's not normal if the squeal or metal-scraping screech lasts through the whole cycle, gets louder over weeks, or comes with thumping, burning smell, or a drum that slows down. LG says that kind of sound can mean a loose drum shaft, hardened lubricant, or worn rollers or belt, and that the dryer needs an inspection.
The usual worn parts, most likely first:
- Drum support rollers (squeal or thump; most common).
- Idler pulley (high-pitched squeal; keeps the belt tight).
- Drive belt (squeak or slap; often cracked or glazed).
- Drum glides / slides and the felt seal (scraping at the front or back of the drum).
- Drum bearing or motor (grinding or a loud whine; rarer and costlier).
Free checks first: empty pockets, check the drum for a coin or bra wire, level the dryer, and clean the lint filter and vent.
Repair or replace? Rollers, an idler pulley, or a belt are cheap parts; most of the cost is labor. That's almost always worth repairing on a dryer under about 8 years old. A motor or drum bearing on an old dryer is where replacing starts to make sense. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| A brief squeak when the drum starts or reverses, then quiet; or light thumping after the dryer sat unused | Normal belt and roller sounds (LG) | โ No repair. Watch it; check pockets and level |
| A steady squeal or scraping all cycle that's getting worse | Worn rollers, idler pulley, belt, glides, or felt seal | ๐ง Usually worth repairing. Cheap parts; replace rollers and pulley together |
| Grinding, burning smell, drum slowing or stopping, and the dryer is 10+ years old | Drum bearing, motor, or several worn parts | โป๏ธ Lean toward replacing if the quote is high. Run the calculator first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell burning or hot rubber, or see smoke. Turn the dryer off and unplug it (or switch off its breaker). A belt or roller that has seized can overheat; a blocked vent is a fire risk.
- It's a gas dryer and you smell gas. Don't touch switches; leave and call your gas utility from outside.
- The drum has stopped turning, or the breaker trips. Leave it off and get a diagnosis.
- The dryer is still under warranty (year 1 for parts and labor; the drum and some motors have longer part-only coverage). Use LG's warranty service before you open panels (see the warranty section below).
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners. Sheet-metal edges inside a dryer are sharp: wear gloves if you open it.

Which LG dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label inside the door frame or on the back of the dryer. You need it to order the right roller kit or belt and to check warranty status.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | What turns the drum | Squeak sources | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric vented | Often DLE / DLEX (check label) | Motor โ belt โ drum, with an idler pulley | Rollers, idler, belt, glides, felt seal | Most common LG US dryer |
| Gas vented | Often DLG / DLGX (check label) | Same | Same | Gas: pro for anything near the burner |
| Heat pump (ventless) | Often DLHC (check label) | Belt drive that reverses during the cycle | Belt squeak on reversal (LG says normal), rollers | LG says compressor hum and drain-pump gurgling are normal |
Model prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual (search your model on LG's support site) shows your exact layout.
Normal LG dryer sounds vs. sounds that need a repair
LG's US support pages describe these as normal:
| Sound | When | Why (LG) |
|---|---|---|
| Brief squeak or squeal | When the drum starts or reverses | The belt tightens before the drum and belt stabilize |
| Thumping from the rollers | Early in the cycle, more after the dryer sat unused | Rubber rollers settling; uneven loads pressing on them |
| Humming | Heat-pump models, more in cold weather | Compressor running, sometimes faster to warm up |
| Gurgling | Condensing / heat-pump models, about 30 seconds to 3 minutes | Drain pump moving water |
| Tapping or rattling | Any time | Zippers, buttons, coins, keys hitting the drum |
LG says these need attention:
| Sound | What LG says | Likely part |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp, high-pitched squeal or screech all cycle | Internal parts may need inspection | Rollers, idler pulley, belt, drum shaft |
| Metal-scraping | Possible worn parts or hardened lubricant | Glides / slides, felt seal, rollers |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Time the sound. A squeak only in the first seconds or each time a heat-pump drum reverses is normal per LG. A squeal through the whole cycle isn't.
- Empty pockets and fasten zippers. LG's first step for noise: remove coins, keys, and lighters (a fire risk), fasten zippers and buttons, and turn zippered items inside out.
- Check the drum and door seal. Run your hand (gloved) around the drum lip and the door seal for a coin, bra wire, or button wedged in a gap. Pull the lint filter and look in the slot.
- Level the dryer. Rock it corner to corner. Adjust the feet so it sits solidly and isn't touching the washer, a wall, or a pedestal edge.
- Clean the lint filter and check the vent. A blocked vent makes the blower work harder and can pull lint into the blower housing; LG's d80 / d90 / d95 codes flag a restricted vent on many models.
- Run the dryer empty for a few minutes and listen from the front, the back, and underneath. Squeal from the back usually means rear rollers or the idler pulley; scraping at the front usually means front glides or the felt seal.
- Turn the drum by hand (power off). A drum that drags, grinds, or catches in one spot points to rollers, glides, or a bearing.
How to know it's fixed: the dryer runs a full timed cycle with only the brief start-up or reversal squeak LG calls normal, the drum turns smoothly by hand, and there's no burning smell.
LG dryer codes that can show up with noise
No LG code says "squeak." These are the codes that can appear alongside mechanical or airflow noise. LG says codes vary by model.
| Code | LG's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| d80 / d90 / d95 | Flow Sense: the vent is restricted (80%, 90%, 95%) | Clean the lint filter; clear and shorten the vent; check the outside hood |
| dE / dE4 | Door open or door-switch problem | Close the door firmly; check the latch; service if it continues |
| LE1 | Motor problem (drum may be locked or overloaded) | Remove the load, check for a jammed item, restart; service if it returns |
| PF | Power failure during a cycle | Restart |
| tE1 / tE3 | Temperature sensor fault | Reset; service if it returns |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| d80 / d90 / d95 | Exhaust vent; lint in blower | Clean the filter and vent | Vent repair; blower wheel | Moderate |
| dE / dE4 | Door switch / latch | Close firmly; reset | Door switch | Moderate |
| LE1 | Drive motor; seized roller or bearing | Unload; check for jams; restart | Motor, rollers, or bearing | Advanced |
| tE1 / tE3 | Thermistor | Reset | Thermistor | Advanced |
Code meanings from LG's US dryer error-code list (source 3), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 9). The LE1 link to a seized roller or bearing is our inference, not LG's wording. Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom โ likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (gas models: also close the gas shutoff). Let it cool. Most of these repairs mean removing the top, front panel, and drum. If that's more than you want to take on, call a pro.
1. Squeal or rhythmic thump from the back, all cycle
Likely cause: worn drum support rollers. The rubber wears flat or the bushings dry out. A dryer that sat unused can develop a flat spot that thumps until it rounds out (LG treats brief roller thumping as normal).
Signs: louder with a heavy load; you feel a bump when you turn the drum by hand; rollers wobble or don't spin freely once you can reach them.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (the front panel comes off; the drum comes out for the rear rollers).
Call a pro if: you're not comfortable lifting the drum out, or the dryer is in its first year.
Tip: replace all rollers as a set, and replace the idler pulley at the same time; the labor is the same.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum support rollers (kit) | Carry the drum's weight as it turns | Advanced |
2. High-pitched squeal from underneath, steady once running
Likely cause: a worn idler pulley. It keeps the belt tight; when its bearing dries out it squeals constantly. HomeGuide says squealing is the most common reason dryer pulleys get replaced.
Signs: the pulley wobbles, has flat spots or notches, or doesn't spin smoothly by hand.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (reached once the belt is off).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Idler pulley | Keeps tension on the drive belt | Advanced |
3. Squeak or slap that changes with the load; burning-rubber smell
Likely cause: a glazed, cracked, or stretched drive belt, often together with a worn idler pulley.
Signs: shiny or cracked belt surface; the drum slips under a heavy load; the drum stops turning if the belt breaks.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (drum access).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive belt | Connects the motor to the drum | Advanced |
4. Scraping at the front or back edge of the drum
Likely causes: worn front drum glides / slides (plastic pads the drum rides on), a torn or loose felt seal, or, on some designs, a dry drum bearing or shaft. LG lists a loose drum shaft or hardened lubricant among the causes of metal-scraping sounds.
Signs: black marks or metal dust near the drum edge; lint escaping around the drum; a screech that's worst at the front.
DIY difficulty: Advanced; the drum bearing kit is a bigger job.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drum glides / slides | Support the drum at the front | Advanced |
| Felt seal | Seals the drum edge and keeps metal off metal | Advanced |
| Drum bearing kit | Supports the rear drum shaft (designs vary) | Advanced / Pro |
5. Loud whine or grinding from the motor area; LE1
Likely cause: a failing drive motor (bearings), or a seized roller or bearing loading the motor.
Signs: loud hum or whine; the drum slows; LE1 on some models; breaker trips.
DIY difficulty: Pro only in warranty; otherwise advanced. Check LG's 10-year part-only motor coverage (models with a Direct Drive / inverter motor).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the belt and blower | Advanced |

Prevent the next squeak
- Don't overload. Heavy, wet loads wear rollers and belts faster.
- Empty pockets, fasten zippers, turn zippered items inside out (LG's advice).
- Clean the lint filter every load and the vent at least yearly, or when LG's Flow Sense shows d80 or higher.
- Keep the dryer level and solid on the floor or pedestal.
- Don't oil rollers or the pulley from outside. Spraying lubricant into a dryer attracts lint and is a fire risk; replace worn parts instead.

What LG's warranty covers on a dryer
LG's 2026 US dryer limited warranty (see Sources):
| Period (from purchase or delivery) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Years 1โ3 | Dryer drum (part only) | You |
| Years 1โ10 | Direct Drive / inverter motor parts on models that have one (part only) | You |
What this means for a squeak: rollers, pulleys, belts, glides, and felt seals are covered only in the first year. After that they're wear parts you pay for. A motor may still be covered as a part on eligible models, and a damaged drum as a part through year 3. LG's warranty excludes damage from improper installation and inadequate supply of air (a blocked vent). Keep your proof of purchase.
โ Check your model's warranty on LG's site ยท Schedule an LG repair
Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; the drum (3 years) and motor (10 years, eligible models) as parts; plus any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Is it normal? Make sure the sound isn't the brief start-up or reversal squeak LG describes as normal before you book a visit.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask the tech to replace rollers and the idler pulley together if the drum is coming out anyway.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are OEM LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies โ get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair or we found no LG-numbered part, so we don't show a number.
| Repair | Part cost (DIY) | Typical pro cost (parts + labor) | Notes |

Part prices checked 2026-10-30 on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S1โS5). Pro-cost cells tagged [GUIDE] from G1 (Fixr) and G2 (HomeGuide), re-read 2026-10-30; [GUIDE] figures are national averages, not LG-specific quotes. Note the guides' pulley figure ($200โ$350) is higher than their roller figure even though the parts cost about the same; that's labor and trip fees. Prices change; confirm with your model number.
Tip: if a pro is replacing rollers, have them do the idler pulley and belt in the same visit. The parts are cheap; the drum-out labor is what you're paying for.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ R = trip/diagnostic fee + parts + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? โ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ a new vent kit or gas connector if needed)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? โ Age and Life (use about 10โ11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8โ13-year average for dryers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ Past
Step A โ Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | โ Repair | ๐ค Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | ๐ค Get a second quote first | โ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG heat-pump dryer squeaks for a second each time the drum reverses, then runs quietly. R = $0.
โ Not a repair. LG describes this as normal belt friction.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG electric dryer squeals all cycle. A tech replaces the rollers and idler pulley: R = $250; N = $1,000; no other repairs.
250 รท 1,000 = 25%; life used 6 รท 10.5 = 57%; repeat check 25% โ Repair (bottom-left of the "usually fine" box; check the belt while it's open).
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 12-year-old LG gas dryer grinds and slows; the motor is failing, and last year it had a belt and pulley for $220. R = $450; N = $1,000.
450 รท 1,000 = 45%; life used 12 รท 10.5 = over 100%; repeat check (450 + 220) รท 1,000 = 67% โ Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a motor or drum bearing on an older dryer, a second big repair within about 2 years, a cracked drum, or rust.
Tips toward repairing: it's rollers, a pulley, a belt, or glides; the dryer is under about 8 years old; or the motor is still covered as a part.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them when the noise happens (start-up only, or all cycle), where it comes from (front, back, underneath), and your model number; it speeds up the diagnosis and lets them bring a roller kit.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. DIY with the right parts. Roller kits, idler pulleys, and belts are common DIY jobs if you're comfortable taking the drum out. Order by your exact model number. Repair videos and guides are widely available; follow one written for your model.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Is this the normal start-up squeak, or a worn part?
- Will you replace all rollers and the idler pulley while the drum is out?
- Is the belt, glide, or felt seal also worn?
- Can you split the quote into parts, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans treat rollers, belts, and noise as normal wear, and exclude vent cleaning. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Is it normal for an LG dryer to squeak?
Briefly, yes. LG says a short squeak or squeal when the drum starts or reverses is normal belt friction. A squeal or scraping sound that lasts through the whole cycle isn't normal.
Why does my LG dryer squeal all the time?
Usually worn drum rollers or a worn idler pulley, sometimes a glazed belt. LG lists worn rollers or belt, a loose drum shaft, and hardened lubricant among the causes of a constant squeal or screech.
Why does my LG dryer thump?
Rollers can develop flat spots, especially after the dryer sat unused; LG says light roller thumping can be normal and may fade. A loud, steady thump usually means worn rollers. Also check for shoes or heavy items.
Can I oil a squeaky LG dryer?
We don't recommend spraying lubricant into a dryer: it attracts lint and is a fire risk. Replace the worn roller or pulley instead.
How much does it cost to fix a squeaky LG dryer?
OEM LG roller and idler-pulley parts were about $22 to $67 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Cost guides put a squeaky-dryer repair at about $75 to $450 depending on the parts.
Should I replace all the rollers at once?
Yes. The drum has to come out anyway, and rollers wear together. Most technicians replace the idler pulley at the same time.
Does LG's warranty cover a squeaking dryer?
In year 1, a defective part is covered for parts and labor. After that, rollers, pulleys, and belts are wear parts you pay for; the drum (3 years) and some motors (10 years) are covered as parts only.
Is it worth fixing a squeaking LG dryer?
Usually yes for rollers, a pulley, or a belt. A motor or drum bearing on a dryer over about 10 years old often isn't. Use the calculator above.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the dryer before working on it; close the gas valve on gas models. Sheet-metal edges are sharp. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
