Quick answer

Most Maytag "won't start" problems are a setting or the power, not a broken part. Maytag's Product Help and blog list these checks, cheapest first:

  1. Power. If the drum light or controls don't light, go to the breaker panel. Electric dryers use two household fuses or breakers, and both must be intact and on. Gas dryers use one. Maytag says to test a breaker by switching it off and back on, and to call an electrician if the problem continues.
  2. Electric supply and cord. Maytag electric dryers need a 240-volt supply and a correctly installed 3- or 4-wire cord with tight terminal screws. Unplug the dryer before you check.
  3. Controls Locked. If the Controls Locked light is on, the panel ignores every touch. One Maytag page says hold Control Lock for 3 seconds; another says hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds on most models (see the conflict table below).
  4. Hold Start. Press and hold Start / Push to Start / Hold to Start for 2–5 seconds. Maytag says a quick tap "may not allow enough time to engage the motor."
  5. Touch panels: use a dry fingertip, not a fingernail. Wipe moisture off the panel first.
  6. Door latched. The door can look shut and not be latched. Push it firmly. Some models have an upper and a lower latch, and both must catch. Make sure clothing or packing material isn't caught in the latch.
  7. Cycle. Set the knob on Automatic Dry, AccuDry, or Timed Dry. Maytag says the dryer won't start on the Wrinkle Shield option (some models call it Wrinkle Reduction).

Power and settings all fine but still nothing? The usual parts are a blown thermal fuse (often after a blocked vent), a failed door switch or start switch, the drive motor, or the control board. Maytag's blog says if holding Start still doesn't start a dryer that has power, let a technician inspect it.

Repair or replace? Fuses and switches are cheap and usually worth fixing. Maytag dryers made after 2017 carry a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and dryer drum, so a motor may cost you labor only. A control board on an older dryer is where the calculator below matters.

Which Maytag dryer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door opening or on the back of the dryer. You need it for the right switch or fuse, and to check the warranty.

TypeModel prefix (examples)Power supplyNotes
ElectricUsually MED (check label)240 V, two breakers or fuses; 3- or 4-wire cordOne tripped side can stop the dryer or just the heat
GasUsually MGD (check label)One household breaker or fuseThe gas valve affects heat, not starting
Knob and push-to-startVaries (check label)—Older and basic models use a push-to-start switch
Touch-panel electronicVaries (check label)—Controls Locked, fingertip, moisture, codes

Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual names your model's lock button, its wrinkle option, and whether it has a reset function. Maytag's blog says some models have a dedicated Reset button, so check the manual.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Is anything lit? If the drum light and panel are dark, go to the breaker panel. Electric: find both dryer breakers and switch each fully off, then on. Gas: one breaker or fuse.
  2. Controls Locked light on? Hold Control Lock for 3 seconds. No Control Lock button? Hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds.
  3. Hold Start firmly for 2–5 seconds.
  4. Touch panel: dry your hands and the panel; use your fingertip.
  5. Door: push it shut until it latches. On models with two latches, press the top and bottom. Look for a sock or a strap caught in the latch.
  6. Cycle knob: move it to Timed Dry and try again. Not Wrinkle Shield or Wrinkle Reduction on its own.
  7. PF on the display? That's a power failure that interrupted the cycle. Maytag says touch and hold Start to restart, or press Power to clear the display.
  8. Electric dryer, new install or just moved? Maytag says electric dryers need 240 V. Check the cord is installed per the installation instructions and the terminal screws are tight, unplugged. If you're unsure, call an electrician.

How to know it's fixed: the drum turns within a few seconds of holding Start.

What Maytag says vs. what Maytag says (two Product Help pages and the blog)

Maytag's own pages don't agree on two details. Here they are side by side:

Product Help: "Not Starting or Not Operating - Dryer"Product Help: "Dryer Not Starting or No Operation"maytag.com blog: "How to Fix a Dryer That Won't Start"
How to turn off Controls LockedHold the Control Lock button 3 secondsPress and hold the Cycle Signal button 3 seconds ("on most models")Turn it off using the instructions in your owner's manual

What it says about partsNothing (settings and power only)NothingIf the dryer has power but holding Start doesn't start it, the start switch may be bad: let a technician inspect it

Our take: try the button labeled Control Lock first. If your panel doesn't have one, try Cycle Signal. If neither works, your owner's manual has the answer. "Wrinkle Shield" and "Wrinkle Reduction" are the same idea under different model names, so pick a real drying cycle. On the start switch, Maytag points you to a technician; parts retailers sell the switch as a DIY part. If you're comfortable unplugging the dryer and testing a switch with a multimeter, it's a moderate job. Otherwise, follow Maytag's advice.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer. On a gas dryer, close the gas valve. Test parts with a multimeter for continuity only when the dryer is unplugged.

1. Completely dead, breakers fine, the vent was clogged

Likely cause: a blown thermal fuse. It's a one-time safety fuse; it can't be reset. Repair Clinic (a parts retailer, not Maytag) says it usually sits on the blower housing or near the heater, and that a blown fuse means the exhaust was restricted, so check the vent when you replace it.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Thermal fuseCuts power when the exhaust overheatsModerate

2. Panel lights, but holding Start does nothing; the drum light doesn't come on with the door open

Likely cause: the door switch isn't telling the control the door is shut. Rule out the latch first (Maytag: both latches must catch, and nothing can be caught in them).

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door switchTells the dryer the door is closedModerate

3. Dryer has power, but the Start button feels dead or loose

Likely cause: the push-to-start switch. Maytag's blog says that if the dryer turns on but still won't start after you hold Start long enough, the start switch may be bad and a technician should inspect it.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

4. Hums when you hold Start, but the drum doesn't move

Likely cause: the drive motor, or something jamming the drum. Check for a stuck item first (unplugged). On Maytag dryers made after 2017, the drive motor is on Maytag's 10-year limited parts list, so check the warranty before you buy one.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

5. Touch panel dead or erratic after everything else checks out; F# E#

Likely cause: the electronic control board or user interface. Maytag lists any alternating F# E# code as needing service.

Recalls

We searched the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. The Maytag dryer recall it lists is recall 97-060 (January 21, 1997): up to 73,000 older gas dryers sold 1989–1991 under the Magic Chef, Admiral, Crosley, Norge, and Signature brands, for an electrical switch that could overheat. CPSC's notice says Maytag-brand dryers were not involved. We found no CPSC recall for a current Maytag-brand dryer that won't start, but recall lists change, so search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. Recall repairs are free.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a dryer

Per Maytag's US 10-Year Limited Parts Warranty page (re-read 2026-10-30), for Maytag major appliances made after 2017:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and labor for defectsMaytag
Years 2–10Drive motor and dryer drum parts (washers: drive motor and wash basket)You pay labor
Some models, longerMaytag lists longer labor terms on specific models (for example, MED6230RH / MGD6230RH and MEDP586KW / MGDP586KW); check your model's warranty sheetMaytag, within those terms

What this means for a dryer that won't start: a failed fuse, switch, or board in year 1 is covered. After that, a drive motor part can still be covered through year 10, so you'd pay labor only. The thermal fuse, door switch, start switch, and control board aren't on the 10-year list. Tripped breakers, a locked panel, a wrong cord installation, or a blocked vent aren't defects. Keep your proof of purchase. Maytag Customer Service is 1-800-344-1274. Maytag also advertises savings on an extended service plan if you buy within 30 days of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; the 10-year parts list (drive motor, drum); any longer model terms; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: breakers, Controls Locked, Start held, latch, cycle, PF cleared, cord.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Maytag-family (Whirlpool-format) part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "maytag dryer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. GE parts, commercial parts, laundry-center parts, and generic kits in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not Maytag-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means the search didn't return the part or neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech whether the panel lights and whether the dryer hums when you hold Start. That narrows it to power, a switch, or the motor before they arrive.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8–12 and HomeGuide's 8–13 ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Maytag electric dryer is dead after a houseguest pressed buttons. The Controls Locked light is on. There's no Control Lock button, so you hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds and it unlocks. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Maytag electric dryer hums but won't turn. The tech finds a failed drive motor. The motor part is under Maytag's 10-year parts coverage, so you pay the visit and labor: R = $180; N = $900.
180 ÷ 900 = 20%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 20% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Maytag touch-panel dryer shows F# E# and won't start. It had a door switch and a vent repair last year ($250). The tech quotes a control board: R = $480; N = $900.
480 ÷ 900 = 53% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 11 ÷ 10 = over 100%; repeat check (480 + 250) ÷ 900 = 81% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board plus other repairs on an older dryer, repeated failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fuse or switch; the dryer is under about 6 years old; or the part is covered (year 1, or the motor and drum through year 10).

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and Fixr uses it too. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude vent cleaning and pre-existing problems. If your Maytag is newer, compare any plan with the coverage Maytag already gives you.

FAQ

Why won't my Maytag dryer start?
Maytag's top causes: a tripped breaker (electric dryers use two), Controls Locked on, Start not held for 2–5 seconds, the door not fully latched, or Wrinkle Shield or Wrinkle Reduction selected instead of a drying cycle.

How do I unlock a Maytag dryer?
One Maytag page says hold Control Lock for 3 seconds; another says hold Cycle Signal for 3 seconds on most models. Use whichever button your panel has, or check your owner's manual.

Does a Maytag dryer have a reset button?
Maytag's blog says some models have a dedicated Reset button and to check your owner's manual. For a PF code, Maytag says touch and hold Start, or press Power.

My Maytag dryer has power but won't start. What's wrong?
After the settings and the latch, a door switch, start switch, motor, or control board is most likely. Maytag's blog says to have a technician inspect a dryer that turns on but won't start when Start is held.

Can a thermal fuse stop a Maytag dryer from starting?
A parts retailer (Repair Clinic, not Maytag) lists it as a cause. It usually blows because the exhaust is restricted, so clean the vent too.

Why does my Maytag dryer hum but not start?
Often the drive motor, or something jamming the drum. On Maytag dryers made after 2017, motor parts are on the 10-year limited parts list.

How much does it cost to fix a Maytag dryer that won't start?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Maytag-family thermal fuses were listed at about $15 to $49 and door switches at about $22 to $131. Fixr puts a dryer that won't start at $50 to $450.

Should I replace a Maytag dryer that won't start?
Rarely for a fuse or switch. Consider it when a board quote passes half the price of a new dryer on a dryer near 10 years old.
