Quick answer

Most GE dryers that "won't start" have a power or setting problem. GE's support page and owner's manual list these checks, cheapest first:

  1. Plug pushed all the way in. GE lists this first.
  2. Breakers or fuses. GE's manual says some electric dryers use two fuses or breakers; make sure both work. GE says the dryer should be on its own (dedicated) circuit.
  3. Dark screen? Press Power. The manual says a sleeping control panel is normal; Power wakes it.
  4. Door closed tightly. The dryer won't start with the door open. Look at the door switch inside the opening: GE says a switch that's scorched or pushed in can stop the dryer.
  5. Control Lock. On models with it, hold Less Time + Wrinkle Care or ecoDry + Delay Dry for 3 seconds (depends on model).
  6. Press Start fully. GE says make sure Start is pushed in completely. If the Start/Pause light is flashing, the dryer was paused while setting Delay Dry; press Start/Pause again.
  7. "1" or "2" on the display (2019 and newer models). The dryer needs its personality set. Press Start to toggle: 1 = electric, 2 = gas.
  8. Electric only: look at the power cord connection and the terminal block on the back (unplugged). GE says if wires or terminals are burned, broken, or frayed, replace both.

All of that fine and still nothing? Common parts are the door switch, a start switch or timer (knob models), the drive motor, or the control board. GE's next step is a scheduled repair.

Repair or replace? Switches and terminal blocks are cheap and usually worth fixing. A motor or board on an older dryer is where the calculator matters.

Prefixes are examples, not a full list; GE uses the same prefixes for gas and electric on many models. Your owner's manual shows your Control Lock buttons.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Plug: push it fully into the outlet.
  2. Breaker panel: find the dryer breaker(s). Electric dryers often have a double breaker; switch it fully off, then on. If you have fuses, GE says replace both on electric dryers that use two.
  3. Screen dark? Press Power. GE says a sleeping panel is normal.
  4. Door: shut it firmly. Open it again and look at the door switch (the small plunger or lever in the opening). Scorched or stuck in = a likely part.
  5. Lock icon on? Hold the two Control Lock buttons for 3 seconds.
  6. Start/Pause flashing? Press it once to restart a paused Delay Dry countdown.
  7. "1" or "2" showing? Press Start to toggle; choose 1 for electric, 2 for gas.
  8. Electric, still dead? Unplug, remove the small cover on the back, and look at the cord connection and terminal block for burned or loose wires.

How to know it's fixed: the drum turns within a few seconds of pressing Start.

Signs and meanings from GE Appliances US support pages and owner's manual 49-3000198-1 (sources 1โ€“4), checked 2026-10-30. GE's support pages list no numeric error codes for this symptom. The part mapping below is our own from those pages, cost guides, and GE's parts catalog.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer or turn off the breaker (GE says pressing Power doesn't cut power). For gas, close the gas valve. Test parts with a multimeter for continuity only when the dryer is unplugged.

1. Panel lights, door shut, nothing when you press Start

Likely cause: the door switch. GE says a switch that's scorched or pushed in may stop the dryer. Fixr adds that the dryer may not start if the switch breaks, because it thinks the door is open.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

2. Knob-style dryer; Start button feels dead or loose

Likely cause: the start switch, or the timer it signals.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

Start switch (push-to-start or rotary)Starts the motorModerate
TimerRuns the cycle on knob modelsModerate

3. Electric dryer dead or cutting out; scorch marks at the back

Likely cause: a burned terminal block or cord connection. GE says if wires or terminal connections are burned, broken, or frayed, replace both. Your Installation Instructions show the wiring for your model.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (call an electrician if the outlet is damaged too).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

4. Hums when you press Start, but the drum doesn't move

Likely cause: the drive motor, or something jamming the drum. Fixr lists humming instead of tumbling, and a stiff drum, as motor signs. If the drum turns freely by hand, GE says the belt is broken or loose and service is required.

5. Electronic panel dead or erratic after everything else checks out

Likely cause: the electronic control board. HomeGuide lists error codes and no power as board-failure signs.

What about the thermal fuse?

Many dryers have a one-time thermal fuse that a blocked vent can blow (HomeGuide). GE's "Will Not Run or Start" page doesn't list one, and our Sears PartsDirect search for GE dryer thermal fuses returned only a laundry-center fuse (WE4X857, $62.12) plus other brands' parts. So we don't price a GE thermal fuse here: ask your tech whether your model has one, and clean the vent if the Check Vent light was on.

Recalls

On cpsc.gov we found two older recalls that touch GE-branded dryers:

Neither covers current GE dryers broadly. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls before paying for a repair.

What GE's warranty covers on a dryer

Per the limited warranty in GE owner's manual 49-3000198-1 (re-read 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from original purchase)Any part that fails from a defect in materials or workmanship, plus all labor and related service to replace itGE Appliances
After year 1Not covered; GE sells extended service plans (800.626.2224)You

What this means for a dryer that won't start: a failed switch, motor, or board in year 1 is covered. GE's warranty doesn't cover service trips to teach you how to use the product (for example, Control Lock or the personality setting), improper installation, or replacing house fuses or resetting breakers. Keep your proof of purchase. Schedule warranty service at 800.GE.CARES (800.432.2737).

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; any GE extended plan; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: plug, both breakers, Power, door, Control Lock, Start, Delay Dry, personality, cord.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are GE "WE" part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "ge dryer โ€ฆ" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; other brands' parts in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dryers in general unless marked, not GE-specific quotes. "Varies โ€” get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new cord or vent kit)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside Fixr's 8โ€“12 and HomeGuide's 8โ€“13 ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A new GE dryer shows 2 on the display and won't tumble after the installer left. It's electric. Pressing Start until 1 shows fixes it. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old GE electric dryer went dead, and the terminal block is scorched. A tech replaces the terminal block and cord: R = $200; N = $900.
200 รท 900 = 22%; life used 6 รท 10 = 60%; repeat check 22% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old GE dryer hums and won't start; it had a door switch and timer last year ($260). The tech quotes a drive motor: R = $420; N = $900.
420 รท 900 = 47%; life used 11 รท 10 = over 100%; repeat check (420 + 260) รท 900 = 76% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a motor or board on an older dryer, repeated failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a switch, terminal block, or cord; the dryer is under about 6 years old; or it's covered.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and both cost guides use it (Fixr's "50% rule"; HomeGuide: repair when it costs less than half of a replacement). Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

FAQ

Why won't my GE dryer start?
Most often the plug, a breaker (electric dryers may use two), a sleeping panel, Control Lock, a door that isn't shut tightly, or a paused Delay Dry. Newer models may also need the personality set to 1 or 2.

Why does my GE dryer show a 1 or 2?
On some 2019 and newer models, the dryer needs its personality set. Press Start to toggle: 1 for electric, 2 for gas.

How do I unlock a GE dryer?
Depending on model, hold Less Time and Wrinkle Care, or ecoDry and Delay Dry, for 3 seconds. The lock icon turns off when unlocked.

Why is the Start/Pause light flashing on my GE dryer?
The dryer is paused, often after setting Delay Dry. Press Start/Pause to restart the countdown.

My GE dryer hums but won't start. What's wrong?
Often the drive motor or something jamming the drum. If the drum turns freely by hand, GE says the belt is broken or loose and service is required.

Can I replace a burned GE terminal block myself?
GE says to replace both the cord and the terminal block if either is burned. Its manual also warns against repairs not covered in its user-repair instructions, so unplug first and call a pro if you're unsure.

How much does it cost to fix a GE dryer that won't start?
Often nothing. Fixr puts a won't-start repair at $50 to $450. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, GE door switches were listed at about $15 to $55.

Should I replace a GE dryer that won't start?
Rarely for a switch or terminal block. Consider it when a motor or board quote passes half the price of a new dryer on a dryer near 10 years old.
