Quick answer

First, check whether it heats. Maytag's test: run an empty heated cycle for 5 minutes, then open the door and feel inside. Cold means it's a no-heat problem (see our Maytag dryer not heating guide). Warm means the heat works and the slow drying is almost always airflow, cycle, or load.

Maytag says that if a dryer heats but still takes too long, the likely cause is the vent or restricted airflow. Its checks, cheapest first:

  1. Clean the lint screen before every load. If you use fabric softener sheets, wash the screen with warm water and a soft brush now and then to remove invisible residue.
  2. AF or "Check Vent" on the display? That means the lint screen or vent is clogged, crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running anyway.
  3. Test the airflow outside. Run the dryer 5–10 minutes and hold your hand under the outside exhaust hood. If the air is weaker than a hair dryer on high, clean the whole vent run and the hood.
  4. Fix the duct. Maytag says use only 4-inch heavy metal venting, never plastic or foil. Keep it short and straight, and don't crush it behind the dryer.
  5. Check the cycle. Air Dry / Fluff adds no heat. EcoBoost (on the Regular/Normal cycle) adds about 40 minutes. Static Reduce adds about 3–8 minutes.
  6. Check the load. Don't overload: clothes need room to tumble. Maytag's Quick Dry and Rapid Dry are timed cycles meant for smaller loads.
  7. Level the dryer. If it isn't level, clothes may not touch the moisture sensors in Automatic cycles.

Maytag says the home vent must be cleaned every one to two years, or whenever drying slows. If you connected a new dryer to old venting, you can still get long dry times.

If those don't fix it, the parts that can slow drying are a cracked blower wheel, a moisture sensor, a weak heating element or cycling thermostat, or a thermistor. Maytag sells a dryer vent test kit (part W11224254) that it says works on all its dryer platforms, if you want to confirm the vent before paying for parts.

Repair or replace? Most slow-drying Maytag dryers need a vent cleaning, not a repair. Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty on newer models also covers drive motor and drum parts after year 1. A new dryer on a blocked vent dries just as slowly. See the calculator below.

Which Maytag dryer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label in the door opening or on the back of the dryer (your manual shows where). You need it to order the right lint screen or blower wheel, to look up your vent-length chart, and to check which warranty applies.

Model prefixes are examples, not a full list. MED6230RH / MGD6230RH and MEDP586KW / MGDP586KW have longer warranty terms (see the warranty section). Your Installation Instructions have the Vent System Chart (maximum vent length and elbows for your model).

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Heat test. Heated cycle, empty, 5 minutes, feel inside. Warm: keep going here. Cold: see the no-heat guide. If it's cold, check both breakers (electric) or the gas valve (gas) first; see our no-heat guide.
  2. Lint screen. Clean it before every load. Maytag says to clean it after every use, and that regular fabric-softener use can leave residue you can't see, which should be cleaned off occasionally. Warm water and a soft brush work; let it dry fully.
  3. Cycle and options. Maytag: Air Dry / Fluff never adds heat. Quick Dry / Rapid Dry are timed cycles for small loads. EcoBoost uses slightly lower heat and adds about 40 minutes (turn it off for speed). Static Reduce adds about 3–8 minutes and can leave wet spots on small or delicate loads. For best results, Maytag recommends an automatic cycle; if clothes come out damp, try More Dry or Regular.
  4. Load. Leave room for clothes to tumble. Dry towels and heavy items apart from lightweight clothes, and dry a comforter alone.
  5. Behind the dryer. Unplug first. Look for a kinked or crushed duct (common when the dryer is pushed back). Maytag says use only 4-inch heavy metal vent; foil and plastic can collapse or be crushed when the dryer is pushed back.
  6. Outside hood. Run the dryer 5–10 minutes. Hold your hand under the hood: airflow should be at least like a hair dryer on high. The flap should open freely. Clear lint, debris, and nests. Maytag says the hood must be at least 12 inches above the ground or anything that blocks it (plants, rocks, snow).
  7. Vent test kit. Maytag sells a dryer vent test kit, part W11224254, for all its dryer platforms, to tell whether the venting is restricted.
  8. Level and dryness setting. A dryer that isn't level may not tumble clothes against the moisture sensors. If every Automatic load comes out a bit damp, Maytag says you can raise the Factory Dryness Level (see your manual).

How to know it's fixed: a normal mixed load finishes dry on an Automatic cycle in one run, the outside hood blows strongly, and AF / Check Vent doesn't appear.

The open ApplianceDB sample (source 12) has Whirlpool-family dryer codes but cites a third-party code site, so we used it only as a cross-check; the sign→part table above is our own mapping from Maytag's pages and the part catalog. Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (and close the gas valve on gas models). Let it cool. Pull it out gently so you don't crush the duct or strain the gas line.

1. AF / Check Vent, weak air outside, dryer hot, steam on the door

Likely causes: a clogged vent run, a crushed foil or plastic duct, a blocked hood flap or nest, or a vent that's too long with too many elbows. Maytag says longer runs and more elbows reduce airflow and encourage lint build-up, and vents longer than the Vent System Chart allows shorten the dryer's life and raise energy use. Your model's chart has the exact limit.

Internal exhaust duct / elbowConnects the blower to the outlet at the backAdvanced

2. Lint screen looks clean but drying is still slow

Likely causes: softener residue blocking the mesh (Maytag says it's typically not visible), or a torn screen that lets lint into the vent.

DIY difficulty: Easy.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Lint screenCatches lint before the blowerEasy

3. Automatic cycles stop with clothes still damp

Likely causes: the dryer isn't level, the Factory Dryness Level is set low, or a faulty moisture sensor or its wiring tells the control the load is dry too early.

Signs: Timed Dry works fine; Automatic cycles end early.

DIY difficulty: Easy (level, settings) to Moderate (sensor).

4. Clean vent but weak airflow; roaring or rattling

Likely causes: a cracked, loose, or lint-packed blower wheel, or a failing drive motor. Fixr suggests cleaning the exhaust fan once a year.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Blower wheelPulls air through the drum and out the ventAdvanced
Drive motorTurns the drum and blowerAdvanced

5. Air is only lukewarm

Likely causes: a partly failed heating element, a cycling thermostat opening too early, or an exhaust thermistor fault (F3 E1). Gas models: valve coils or igniter. Check the vent first; Maytag says if a dryer heats but still dries slowly, the likely cause is a vent issue or restricted airflow.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; gas parts are Pro only for most owners.

Cycling thermostatTurns heat on and off to hold temperatureAdvanced
ThermistorReports exhaust temperature to the controlModerate

Not sure if it's the vent, the blower, or the heat? A technician can measure airflow and temperature in one visit; that's the visit that decides repair vs. replace. Ask them to check the vent first.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a dryer

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (read 2026-10-30), for major appliances made after 2017:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and labor for defectsMaytag
Years 2–10Limited parts on the dryer drive motor and dryer drum onlyYou
Some models, longerMED6230RH / MGD6230RH: labor also covered for the first 5 years (5-year limited parts and labor, plus 5-year limited parts on the drive motor and drum). MEDP586KW / MGDP586KW: all parts and labor for 5 years (single-family, non-commercial use)Maytag, within those terms

What this means for a dryer that takes too long: a failed blower wheel, moisture sensor, element, or thermostat is covered in year 1 (or the 5-year terms above), then it's on you. A drive motor part stays covered through year 10, so you'd pay labor only. A clogged or crushed vent, overloading, EcoBoost, or the wrong cycle isn't a defect. Keep your proof of purchase; Maytag Customer Service is 1-800-344-1274. Maytag also advertises savings on extended service plans bought within 30 days of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; drive motor and drum parts through year 10 (post-2017 models); 5-year terms on the models listed above; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: heat test, lint screen and residue, cycle and EcoBoost, load size, duct, hood airflow, level, dryness level.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask whether the tech measured the vent airflow before quoting a part.

Tip: a new dryer on a clogged vent will be just as slow. If the outside hood fails the hair-dryer test, fix the vent before you decide anything else.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers, including drive motor or drum parts in years 2–10 on post-2017 models. Don't count vent cleaning: you need a clean vent with any dryer.
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ a new power cord or gas connector if needed)
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10–11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year average for dryers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old Maytag electric dryer needs two cycles and shows AF. The foil duct behind it is crushed and the outside flap is stuck with lint. A new 4-inch metal duct and a vent cleaning fix it. R (dryer repair) = $0.
→ Not a dryer repair. Fix the vent.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Maytag dryer has a clean vent but weak airflow and a rattle; the blower wheel is cracked. R = $220; N = $900; no other repairs.
220 ÷ 900 = 24%; life used 7 ÷ 11 = 64%; repeat check 24% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 12-year-old Maytag dryer (outside the 10-year parts term) needs a drive motor after a heating element last year ($280). R = $450; N = $900.
450 ÷ 900 = 50%; life used 12 ÷ 11 = over 100%; repeat check (450 + 280) ÷ 900 = 81% → Replace. (On a 6-year-old post-2017 model, the motor part would be covered and you'd pay labor and the trip fee only, which usually means repair.)

Tips toward replacing: a motor or control board on an older dryer, repeated element or thermostat failures (often a vent that was never fixed), or a drum that scrapes.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lint screen, sensor, blower wheel, or thermostat; the dryer is under about 8 years old; or the real fix was the vent, cycle, or load.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude vent cleaning and problems caused by lint. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered. Maytag also sells extended service plans on new appliances.

FAQ

Why is my Maytag dryer taking so long to dry?
If it heats, Maytag says the likely cause is the vent or restricted airflow. Clean the lint screen, check the duct behind the dryer, and test the airflow at the outside hood. Also check for EcoBoost, Air Dry, or an overloaded drum.

What does AF mean on a Maytag dryer?
Restricted airflow: the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running; touch any key to clear the code, then clean the vent.

Does EcoBoost make a Maytag dryer take longer?
Yes. Maytag says EcoBoost uses slightly lower heat and adds about 40 minutes. Turn it off if you want the fastest time.

How often should I clean my Maytag dryer vent?
Maytag says every one to two years, or whenever drying slows. Clean the lint screen before every load.

What kind of vent does a Maytag dryer need?
Maytag says use 4-inch rigid or flexible heavy metal vent, not foil or plastic, kept as straight and short as possible within your model's Vent System Chart.

Why are my clothes still damp after an Automatic cycle?
The dryer may not be level, so clothes miss the moisture sensors, or the Factory Dryness Level may be set low. Maytag says try More Dry or Regular, level the dryer, and adjust the Factory Dryness Level.

Is it worth repairing a Maytag dryer that takes too long?
Usually the fix is the vent, which you'd need with any dryer. A blower wheel or sensor is a modest repair. On post-2017 models the drive motor part is covered through year 10; a motor on an older, out-of-term dryer leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
