LG Dryer Not Turning On or Won't Start? Power, Door, Child Lock and Part Fixes — Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
LG says a dryer with no power is "typically caused by a tripped circuit breaker, a faulty electrical outlet, a power outage in the home, or in rare cases a unit that requires a repair." So start with the free checks, in this order:
- Open the door and look at the drum light. This is LG's own first test. Light ON but the dryer won't power on → LG says the unit needs repair service. Light OFF → it's almost always a power-supply problem; keep going.
- Reset the breaker. Turn it OFF, wait 5 seconds, turn it back ON. LG notes that electric dryers use two breakers (or a two-pole breaker), while gas dryers usually use one.
- Check the plug, cord, and wall switch. LG reminds owners that some outlets are controlled by a light switch on the wall.
- Display lights up but nothing happens? Turn off Child Lock (hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds on most models), close the door firmly, and look for a code such as dE (door), FO (lint filter), or PF (power failure).
- Do LG's hard reset: unplug the dryer, hold Power for 5 seconds, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, and plug it back in.
If it's still dead after that, the usual failed parts are the door switch, the power cord or terminal block, a thermal fuse / high-limit safety that tripped from a blocked vent, or a control or display board. If it hums or the display counts down but the drum doesn't turn, think belt, idler pulley, or motor.
Repair or replace? Door switches, cords, belts, and fuses are cheap fixes. A control board plus a motor on a dryer near the end of its life usually isn't worth it. See the calculator below.

Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas near a gas dryer. Don't switch anything on or off. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
- The outlet, plug, or cord looks scorched, melted, or smells burned, or the breaker trips again right after you reset it. Leave the breaker off and call an electrician. That's a house-wiring job, not a dryer part.
- You'd have to open the back panel or terminal block on a 240 V dryer and you've never worked on one. A loose or reversed wire there is exactly what LG's PS code warns about; have a pro do it.
- The dryer is still under warranty. Use LG's warranty service before you open any panel (see the warranty section below).
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.
Fix order at a glance (cheapest first)
| Order | What to try | Cost | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drum-light test, breaker reset (both halves on electric), wall switch | Free | Easy |
| 2 | Turn off Child Lock; reseat the lint filter; close the door firmly | Free | Easy |
| 3 | LG hard reset (unplug, hold Power, then Start/Pause, 5 s each) | Free | Easy |
| 4 | Clean the lint screen and the vent run if it starts then stops | Free | Easy |
| 5 | Door switch | Part only | Moderate |
| 6 | Belt or idler pulley (display counts down, drum doesn't turn) | Part only | Moderate |
| 7 | Power cord or terminal-block wiring | Part, or pro visit | Advanced / pro |
| 8 | Thermal fuse or high-limit safety, then control/display board or motor | Pro diagnosis first | Advanced / pro |
DIY tiers we use: Easy = no tools or basic tools, no panels off. Moderate = a panel comes off, the dryer is unplugged. Advanced = wiring connectors or multiple parts; only if you've done it before. Pro only = gas, mains wiring, or anything under warranty.
Which LG dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame. The model tells you whether you're dealing with a 240-volt electric dryer, a gas dryer on a regular outlet, or a ventless heat-pump unit.
| Model prefix (examples) | Fuel / power | What "no power" usually means | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLE, DLEX (e.g. DLE3400, DLE7300, DLEX3900) | Electric, 240 V, large 3- or 4-prong plug | Tripped half of a two-pole breaker, loose cord at the terminal block, bad outlet | Most common LG dryer |
| DLG, DLGX (e.g. DLG3401, DLG7301, DLGX3901) | Gas burner, 120 V plug for controls and motor | Tripped single breaker, GFCI or switched outlet | Gas parts: pro recommended |
| DLHC (e.g. DLHC1455) | Electric heat-pump / hybrid condensing | Same power checks; also drn / OE if the water container is full | Different system; see LG's code list |
| WashTower / stacked | Electric or gas (check label) | Same power checks | Access is harder; consider a pro |
First, which "won't turn on" is it?
The fix depends on what you see when you press Power and Start. Match your symptom:
| What you see | What it usually means | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing at all, drum light off | No power reaching the dryer | Five-minute checks (breaker, outlet, cord) |
| Nothing at all, drum light on | Power is reaching the dryer, but the controls aren't responding | LG says request repair; often the control or display board |
| Display on, buttons do nothing | Child Lock is on, or a touch-button quirk | Child Lock section |
| Display on, shows dE, FO, PF, PS, nP, gAS, CL | A code is blocking the start | LG codes table |
| Display counts down, but the drum doesn't turn | Broken belt, idler pulley, or motor; LG's LE1 or bE codes | Symptom 3 below |
| Starts, then shuts off early | Interrupted power, a small load, or dirty moisture sensors (LG) | "Turns off abnormally" section |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
These are LG's own steps for an LG dryer with no power, in order:
- Check the drum light. Open the door. If the light is ON but the dryer won't power on, LG says it needs repair. If the light is OFF, continue.
- Check the power connection. For electric dryers, LG says to check the power cord connection at the back of the unit and at the terminal block, and make sure the plug is fully seated in the wall.
- Reset the circuit breaker. Turn the dryer's breaker OFF, wait 5 seconds, and turn it back ON. Check the drum light again. On electric dryers, make sure both halves of the two-pole breaker are fully on; a half-tripped breaker can look "on" at a glance.
- Check the wall switch. LG notes that some outlets are controlled by light switches. Make sure that switch is on.
- Try to power on and start the dryer. If it works, you're done. If the light came back but the dryer still won't run, LG says it needs repair.
- Do the hard reset (next section).
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (or turn off its breaker) before you pull it out or open any panel. A 240 V dryer outlet can seriously injure you. If the outlet or plug looks scorched or smells burned, stop and call an electrician.
LG's hard reset (1 minute)
LG gives two versions. Use the one that matches your symptom.
Dryer has no power at all:
- Unplug the dryer.
- While it's unplugged, press and hold POWER (or Power/Start) for 5 seconds, then press and hold START/PAUSE (Play/Pause) for 5 seconds.
- Plug it back in and check whether the drum light and display come back.
Dryer has power but won't run:
- Turn off the dryer's circuit breaker.
- Unplug the dryer.
- With the breaker off and the cord unplugged, hold POWER for 5 seconds, then START/PAUSE for 5 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn the breaker back on.
LG says that if the dryer still doesn't power on after the hard reset, it requires repair service.
Touch-button models: LG's support pages note that on some touch-control dryers, Power and Start are designed to respond only after you hold them for about 1 second, so a light tap can look like "won't start." Press the center of the button with dry hands.
Display on, but it won't start: Child Lock and the door
Child Lock. LG says that if Child Lock is on, the display will not respond. On most models, hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds to turn it off. LG's code list adds that Child Lock stays on at the end of the cycle, even when the dryer is powered off, and you can't start the dryer until you turn it off. A CL on the display means it's on. On some models the button is labeled Control Lock or shows a lock icon.
Door not detected (dE / dE4). LG says a dE code means the door isn't completely closed. Check that:
- the lint filter is pushed all the way in,
- no clothing is caught in the door,
- the door isn't bent or damaged (on a brand-new dryer, LG says to contact the dealer).
Then LG's reset: unplug the dryer or trip the breaker, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in, close the door firmly, select a cycle, and press Start. If dE comes back, LG says the dryer needs service. That's usually the door switch or the door latch/strike.
Lint filter not detected (FO / flashing INSERT FILTER). LG says the dryer stops working when the lint filter isn't inserted properly. Pull it out and reinsert it. On models with a two-part filter, LG says both parts must be assembled, and a missing magnet in the inner filter means the filter can't be detected; if the magnet is lost, buy a new filter.
LG dryer codes that stop a start
| Code | LG's meaning | What to do (per LG) |
|---|---|---|
| dE / dE4 | Door not completely closed | Clear the door and lint filter, reset (unplug 5 s), close firmly, start. Persists → service |
| FO | Lint filter not inserted properly | Remove and reinsert the filter. Persists → service |
| CL | Child Lock on | Hold Child Lock 3–5 seconds with the dryer on |
| PF | Power failure, usually after an outage | Unplug or trip the breaker, hold Start/Pause 5 seconds, restore power, run a cycle |
| PS | Improper voltage in the power cord; can mean the white and red wires are reversed at the terminal block | Check cord installation, turn the breaker off 10 seconds, confirm a grounded 240 V outlet. Persists → service |
| nP | No current detected at the heater; usually home wiring | Check the cord, breaker off 10 s, have an electrician check the outlet |
| gAS | Gas dryer not receiving gas | Gas valve ON, gas line not kinked. Persists → service |
| drn / OE (condensing models) | Water container full, drain hose kinked, or air in the drain pump | Empty and reseat the container; straighten the hose |
| LE1 | Drum not rotating because of a drum motor issue | Remove some items if the load is heavy. Persists → service |
| bE | Drum drive belt problem, drum stopped | Unplug 60 seconds, restart. Persists → service |
| E00 | Display board can't read software from the main board | Unplug 60 s, restart. Persists → service |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dE / dE4 | Door switch or latch | Clear the door, reseat the lint filter, reset | Replace the door switch | Easy → Moderate |
| FO | Lint-filter housing / filter | Reseat the filter | New filter (missing magnet) or service | Easy |
| PF | None (power was interrupted) | Reset | — | Easy |
| PS | Power cord / terminal-block wiring | Breaker off 10 s, confirm a grounded 240 V outlet | Correct the wiring | Pro only |
| nP | Heater circuit or house wiring | Cord and breaker check | Electrician, then service | Advanced / pro |
| gAS | Gas valve / supply | Gas valve on, line not kinked | Service | Pro only |
| bE / LE1 | Belt or drum motor | Unplug 60 s; lighter load | Belt (moderate) or motor (advanced) | Moderate → Advanced |
Code meanings from LG's US error-code list (source 3), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 11). Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker. On a gas dryer, also turn off the gas shutoff valve before you move the dryer. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
1. Completely dead, drum light off, power checks pass
Likely causes: a burned or loose power cord connection at the terminal block; a bad outlet or house wiring; on some designs, a tripped thermal fuse / high-limit safety after the vent overheated; a failed main control board.
Signs: scorch marks or a melted look at the terminal block behind the small cover on the back; the outlet tests dead; the dryer died right after a long, hot load or a vent you know is clogged.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Power cord (3- or 4-wire) | Brings 240 V (electric) or 120 V (gas) into the dryer | Easy–moderate; match your outlet and the manual |
| Thermal fuse / high-limit thermostat | Cuts power when the dryer overheats | Easy once the back panel is off |
| Main control board | Runs the dryer | Moderate; diagnose first |
If a fuse or high-limit tripped, fix the vent too. LG's code list says d80 / d90 / d95 mean airflow is restricted between the dryer and the outside exhaust. A new safety part on a clogged vent will just trip again. See our LG dryer not heating guide for the vent checks.
2. Drum light on, but the dryer won't power on or respond
Likely causes: LG's guidance here is short: light on but no power-on means the unit needs repair. In practice, that points to the display (user interface) board, the main control board, or the wiring between them. LG's E00 code is a display board that can't read the main board.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Display / user interface board | Buttons, display, and Power key | Moderate |
| Main control board | Controls motor, heat, and sensors | Moderate; diagnose first |
Boards are the expensive guess. Order one only after a technician (or LG) has ruled out the cord, door switch, and fuses. Most parts sellers don't accept returns on electrical parts once installed.

Independent partner service, not LG. We may be paid when you call.
3. Display works and counts down, but the drum doesn't turn
Likely causes: a broken drive belt, a failed idler pulley, or a drive motor problem. LG's LE1 code means the drum isn't rotating because of the drum motor; bE is a drum belt problem.
Signs: the drum spins freely by hand with no resistance (belt off); a squeal or thump before it quit (pulley or belt); a hum with no movement (motor).
LG's own check: press Start and watch whether the drum turns. If it turns, let it run 30 seconds, then open the door and feel for heat. A turning, warm drum means the dryer is working.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive belt | Turns the drum | Moderate (front or top panel off) |
| Idler pulley | Keeps the belt tight | Moderate |
| Drive motor | Turns the belt and blower | Moderate–hard |
4. dE won't clear even with the door shut
Likely causes: a failed door switch, a bent door or broken latch/strike, or a loose wire at the switch.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Door switch | Tells the control the door is closed | Easy–moderate |
| Door latch / strike | Holds the door shut against the switch | Easy |
5. Starts, then shuts off early
LG lists three causes when a dryer turns back on after shutting off mid-cycle:
- Interrupted power to the dryer.
- Small loads. Clothes don't brush the sensors at the front of the drum, so LG says the cycle time drops to 15–20 minutes, then 6 minutes, then shuts off. Add a few items or use Speed Dry or Timed Dry.
- Dirty sensors. Residue on the moisture sensor bars can end the cycle early. Wipe them with a damp cloth and let them dry.
If the dryer doesn't come back on after shutting off, do the hard reset above. If it still won't power on, LG says it needs repair.
Electrical safety: when it's the house, not the dryer
A "dead dryer" is often a house wiring problem, and the fix is an electrician, not a repair tech.
- Electric dryers need 240 V. LG's code list says the cord should be plugged into a grounded outlet matching the dryer's rating plate of 240 V. LG also says the outlet may need to be checked by a licensed electrician.
- New install? LG says that if a PS code appears after installation, call the installer to check the power cord installation and the wall outlet.
- Don't use an extension cord or adapter on a dryer, and never force a 3-prong cord into a 4-slot outlet (or the reverse). Match the cord to the outlet per the installation manual.
- Scorched outlet, melted plug, or a burning smell: turn off the breaker and leave it off until an electrician has looked.
What LG's warranty covers on a dryer
LG's 2026 US dryer limited warranty (see Sources):
| Period (from purchase or delivery) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Years 1–3 | Dryer drum (part only) | You |
| Years 1–10 | Direct Drive / inverter motor parts on models that have one (part only) | You |
What this means for a dryer that won't turn on: door switches, cords, belts, fuses, and control boards are covered only in the first year. LG's warranty excludes failures from incorrect electrical voltage, improper installation, and "inadequate supply of air," so a dryer that tripped its fuse on a blocked vent, or a cord installed with reversed wires, may not be covered even in year 1. Keep your proof of purchase.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10–11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year average for dryers, if you don't know)
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Ask about the vent and other worn parts |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old LG electric dryer is dead. One half of the two-pole breaker had tripped. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG dryer shows dE with the door shut. A tech replaces the door switch: R = $150; N = $900.
150 ÷ 900 = 17%; life used 6 ÷ 11 = 55% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG dryer has the drum light on but won't respond, and the tech finds a failed main board plus a worn motor. R = $650; N = $900.
650 ÷ 900 = 72%; life used 11 ÷ 11 = 100% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a control board and a motor at the same time, a dryer past about 10 years, or a second major repair within a year or two.
Tips toward repairing: it's a cord, door switch, belt, pulley, or fuse; the dryer is in its first year; or it's part of a matched pair or WashTower.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dryer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dryer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A licensed electrician. If the outlet is dead, scorched, or wired for the wrong voltage, it's an electrical job, not a dryer repair.
4. DIY with the right part. Door switches, belts, pulleys, and many fuses are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Order by your exact model number, and unplug first.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check voltage at the outlet and terminal block first?
- Is the drum light on? Which part did you test, and how?
- If a fuse tripped, did you check the vent?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by house wiring, improper installation, and lack of maintenance such as vent cleaning. A dryer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why won't my LG dryer turn on at all?
LG says no-power problems are typically a tripped breaker, a faulty outlet, a power outage, or rarely a part that needs repair. Check the drum light, reset the breaker (both halves on electric models), check the cord and any wall switch, then do LG's hard reset.
How do I reset an LG dryer that won't start?
Unplug it, press and hold Power for 5 seconds, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, and plug it back in. If it has power but won't run, LG says to switch off the breaker as well before holding the buttons.
My LG dryer has power but won't start. Why?
Check Child Lock first; LG says the display won't respond while it's on. Hold Child Lock for 3 seconds. Then make sure the door is fully closed (dE code) and the lint filter is fully inserted (FO code).
What does dE mean on an LG dryer?
The door isn't completely closed. Push the lint filter all the way in, clear any clothing from the door, unplug the dryer for 5 seconds, close the door firmly, and press Start. If dE returns, LG says the dryer needs service.
The drum light is on but my LG dryer won't power on. What now?
LG says that combination means the dryer requires repair service. It usually points to the display or main control board.
Can a clogged vent stop an LG dryer from turning on?
It can lead there. A blocked vent makes a dryer overheat, which can trip safety parts such as a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat. LG's d80, d90, and d95 codes warn that airflow is restricted.
Is it worth fixing an LG dryer that won't turn on?
Usually yes if it's a breaker, cord, door switch, belt, or fuse. A control board plus a motor on a dryer older than about 10 years usually isn't. Use the calculator above.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls.
