Quick answer

Most Maytag leaks start outside the washer. Maytag's US Product Help articles for leaks list these checks, cheapest first:

  1. Hose washers and connections. Both ends of each fill hose need a rubber hose washer, and every connection must be tight, not cross-threaded, and not over-tightened. Maytag also says to check that the water inlet valve at the back isn't cracked.
  2. The household drain. Maytag says your sink or standpipe must carry away at least 17 gallons (64 L) per minute. A slow or clogged drain backs up and looks like a washer leak. The drain hose should be secure but not sealed in the drainpipe.
  3. Front-load door seal. Wipe dirt, lint, and pet hair off the door seal and glass, and pull out anything caught in the seal so its drainage holes aren't blocked.
  4. Dispenser drawer (front-load). Close it all the way, clean out detergent buildup, and never put pods in the drawer. They go in the drum before the clothes.
  5. Detergent. Use HE detergent only, in the recommended amount. Maytag says extra suds can leak, including out of the rear vent. Avoid "no splash" or "easy pour" bleach, which can over-suds.
  6. Load and level. Don't overload; keep clothes inside the drum; level the washer.
  7. Top-load: don't add more than 1 or 2 small items after a highest-water-level wash has started. Maytag says the water can rise over the inner tub.

If those don't fix it, the parts that usually fail are the front-load door boot (seal), the water inlet valve, the drain pump, an internal hose or clamp, or a tub seal. Oil under a washer points to the transmission, which Maytag says needs a licensed pro.

Repair or replace? Hoses, washers, a door boot, an inlet valve, or a pump are usually worth fixing. A leaking outer tub or transmission on an older washer usually isn't.

Which Maytag washer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label: often under the lid or on the back of the console on top-loaders, and around the door opening on front-loaders. You need it for parts and service.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Dry everything, then watch. Wipe the floor and the washer dry and lay paper towels around the base. Run a short cycle and note when the leak starts (fill, wash, drain, or spin) and where (front, back, under).
  2. Hose ends. Pull the washer out carefully. Check both fill hoses at the faucet and at the washer: each end needs a hose washer, and connections should be tight, not cross-threaded, not over-tightened (Maytag).
  3. Hoses themselves. Look for cracks, bulges, or kinks. Maytag says damaged hoses need replacing.
  4. Hot and cold. On a top-load, Maytag says reversed hoses can cause leaking or condensation. Hot to hot, cold to cold.
  5. The drain. Run water into the standpipe or laundry sink from a bucket. If it backs up, the clog is in your plumbing. Maytag's minimum is 17 gal (64 L) per minute. The drain hose should be secure but not sealed in the pipe.
  6. Front-load door seal. Fold back the seal and wipe it. Remove socks, coins, or hair ties. Make sure its drain holes are clear.
  7. Dispenser drawer. Pull it out, rinse off buildup, and push it fully closed.
  8. Detergent. Check you're using HE detergent at the recommended dose. If you see suds at the door or the back vent, that's the leak.
  9. Level. Use a level (or a phone app) and adjust the feet. Maytag lists an out-of-level washer as a leak cause.
  10. House plumbing. Maytag also says to check the laundry tub, faucets, drainpipe, water heater, and water pipes. Sometimes the "washer leak" isn't the washer.

How to know it's fixed: a full cycle runs with dry paper towels around the base.

Drain-time leaks: Maytag's own pages split the work differently

Maytag's Product Help and its blog agree on the causes but differ on what you should handle yourself. Here they are side by side:

Maytag Product Help (leak articles)maytag.com blog: "How To Fix a Washing Machine That is Leaking"
Drain hoseCheck it's secure but not sealed in the drainpipe; check for a backed-up household drain (17 gal/min)Damaged or loose drain hose clamps, a leaky hose, or a broken drain pump are "best left up to the professionals"

Inlet valveVerify the inlet valve isn't cracked or brokenUnplug, pull the washer out, inspect the valve; if cracked, schedule a professional

Our take: do every external check from Product Help yourself (hoses, washers, drain, detergent, level). Once the leak is inside the cabinet (pump, internal hoses, clamps, tub), follow the blog and book a technician.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water faucets. Have towels and a shallow pan ready. Leave anything inside the cabinet to a pro.

1. Front-load: leaking from the front, around the door

Likely causes: a dirty seal, an item caught in it, blocked seal drain holes, overloading, or a torn door boot. Maytag's blog says a ripped or torn seal needs replacing.

DIY difficulty: Easy (cleaning) · Advanced (boot replacement: front panel and two spring clamps).

2. Front-load: leaking at the dispenser drawer

Likely causes: the drawer not fully closed, a clogged dispenser, or a pod in the drawer. Maytag says remove and clean the dispenser, and put pods in the drum before the clothes.

DIY difficulty: Easy.

3. Leaking from behind, during fill

Likely causes: a missing or worn hose washer, a loose or cross-threaded connection, a cracked fill hose, or a cracked inlet valve.

DIY difficulty: Easy (hoses and washers) · Moderate (inlet valve: back panel).

4. Water dripping into the drum while the washer is off

Likely cause: the water inlet valve isn't closing. Maytag's guidance is to turn off the water faucets while you wait for service.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

5. Puddle underneath, mostly during drain

Likely causes: first rule out a backed-up standpipe. Then a leaking drain pump, a loose clamp, or a cracked internal hose. Maytag's blog says these are jobs for a licensed technician.

DIY difficulty: Pro only.

6. Puddle underneath during fill or wash; spray from the top during spin

Likely causes: a damaged tub seal, a faulty water level switch causing overfill, or (top-load) a failed tub cover gasket. Maytag's blog suggests a small test load to see if it fills to the right level, and recommends a pro if it overfills.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a washer

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (see Sources); your model's warranty document has the final terms:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and labor (Maytag major laundry appliances made after 2017)Maytag
Years 2–10Limited parts coverage on the drive motor and wash basket (washers)You pay labor
Bonus (named models)MVW6230RH: 5-year limited parts and labor, then parts-only on the motor and basket to year 10. MVWP586GW: all parts and labor for 5 years, plus the 10-year parts coverage (single-family, non-commercial use)See model warranty

What this means for a leak: in year 1, a failed door boot, inlet valve, pump, or tub seal is covered. After year 1, none of the usual leak parts (boot, valve, pump, hoses, seals) are on the 10-year parts list, so they're on you unless your model has bonus coverage or you have an extended service plan. Hose washers, reversed hoses, a slow household drain, suds, and overloading aren't defects. Maytag's blog adds: "Depending on the cause of your leaking washer, your repair may be covered under the warranty." Maytag's Product Help pages also offer savings of up to 25% on new-appliance extended service plans bought within 30 days.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; any bonus model coverage; retailer or credit-card extended protection; any Maytag extended service plan.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: hose washers and connections, standpipe flow, door seal, dispenser, detergent, level, hot/cold hoses.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and where the tech found the leak.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool-family part numbers (Maytag is a Whirlpool brand) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "maytag washer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; LG, GE, Bosch, Frigidaire, and other brands' parts, wire harnesses, clamps, internal fill-nozzle hoses, and dishwasher parts were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general unless marked, not Maytag-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Maytag top-load leaves a puddle behind it during fill. One fill hose is missing its rubber washer. A new 4-pack of hose washers fixes it. R = about $6.
→ Not a real repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Maytag front-load leaks from the door; the boot is torn. A tech replaces it: R = $300; N = $1,100; no other repairs.
300 ÷ 1,100 = 27%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50%; repeat check 27% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Maytag top-load leaks from under the tub, with rust streaks and a grinding spin. The quote is an outer tub and bearings: R = $700; N = $900. A pump was replaced last year for $300.
700 ÷ 900 = 78%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = 110%; repeat check (700 + 300) ÷ 900 = 111% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a leaking outer tub, bearings, or transmission on a washer past about 10 years; oil leaks; repeated repairs.
Tips toward repairing: it's hoses, a door boot, an inlet valve, or a pump; the washer is under about 6 years old; or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).

Need a repair pro?
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.

3. A plumber. For a standpipe or laundry sink that backs up, or leaking faucets, pipes, or water heater (Maytag lists these as things to check).

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude water damage to floors, hoses, and seals, and a washer that's already leaking is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Maytag washer leaking from the bottom?
Maytag's checks: hose washers at both ends of each fill hose, tight connections, a household drain that carries at least 17 gallons per minute, HE detergent at the right dose, and (front-load) a closed bulk dispenser if your model has one. If it only leaks during drain, the pump or an internal hose or clamp is likely, and Maytag's blog says that's a job for a pro.

Why is my Maytag front load washer leaking from the front?
Maytag says a dirty door seal or glass, items stuck in the seal, blocked seal drain holes, a clogged or open dispenser drawer, pods in the drawer, too much or non-HE detergent, overloading, or an unlevel washer. A torn seal needs replacing.

Why is water dripping into my Maytag washer when it's off?
Maytag's blog says the water inlet valve may not be closing. Turn off the faucets behind the washer until it's serviced.

Can too much detergent make a Maytag washer leak?
Yes. Maytag says non-HE detergent, or too much HE detergent, makes extra suds that can leak, including from the rear vent. "No splash" or "easy pour" bleach can do the same.

Why does my Maytag top load washer overflow?
Maytag says that if you add clothes after the cycle starts at the highest water level, the water can rise over the inner tub. Add no more than 1 or 2 small items. If it overfills on its own, the water level switch may be faulty.

What does oil under my washer mean?
Maytag's blog says it likely means a transmission problem, which needs a licensed professional.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking Maytag washer?
Often nothing, or a few dollars for hose washers. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Maytag-compatible door boots were listed at about $88 to $210 and inlet valves at about $24 to $287. Fixr puts a leaking washer repair at $75 to $200 on average.

Should I replace a leaking Maytag washer?
Rarely for hoses, a boot, a valve, or a pump. Consider it for a leaking outer tub, bearings, or transmission on an older washer.
