Quick answer

Most Maytag "won't spin" calls are a setting, a load, or suds. Maytag Product Help lists these first:

  1. Unbalanced load. If the washer senses an off-balance load, it refills and rocks the basket to redistribute it (you may see Ofb). If that fails, it stops. Spread the load out and press Start/Pause.
  2. Spin setting. Low Spin or No Spin leaves clothes wet. Maytag notes the washer remembers settings per cycle, so a cycle you once ran with no spin stays that way. Delicate and Hand Wash spin slower on purpose.
  3. Bulky items. Use the Bulky or Sheets/Bedding cycle for comforters, coats, and blankets, not Normal or Rapid Wash. Balance a single heavy item with a few towels.
  4. Suds. Use only HE detergent and measure it. Maytag says too many suds reduce spin speed (top-loads may show Sud).
  5. Level the washer. An unlevel washer can't balance the load.
  6. Drain hose. Water standing in the tub means it can't reach spin: use the U-shaped hose form, put only 4.5 inches of hose into the standpipe, and keep the standpipe between 39 and 96 inches high (Maytag's top-load spin page; its drain guide says 30 inches minimum).
  7. Lid or door. Maytag says the washer only runs when the lid or door is securely closed. LdL means the lid can't lock: check for items under the lid and detergent build-up on the lock.
  8. Power failure during spin? It may not ramp up to full speed. Run Drain & Spin.

If those don't fix it, the usual parts are the lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load), a drive belt on belt-drive models, the shift actuator on many top-loads, the drain pump, the drive motor, or the control board. Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers the drive motor on models made after 2017, so check it before paying for a motor.

Repair or replace? Most no-spin calls cost nothing to fix. A lid lock or actuator is usually worth fixing. A motor may be a parts-covered repair under Maytag's 10-year warranty. See the calculator below.

Which Maytag washer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label (on most top-loads, under the lid or on the back of the cabinet; on front-loads, around the door opening). Maytag's warranty page uses the model number to show your exact coverage.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Let it rebalance. If you see Ofb, Maytag says let the washer finish its correction routine. If the dial is flashing and it stopped, redistribute, close the lid, and press Start/Pause.
  2. Spin setting. Pick a cycle with a high spin (Heavy Duty, Normal) and check Spin isn't set to Low or None for that cycle. Then run Drain & Spin.
  3. Load. Loose heaps evenly around the washplate. Don't add wet items mid-cycle. Wash a rug or jacket with a few towels. Comforters go on Bulky/Sheets.
  4. Suds. If you used regular detergent or too much HE detergent, run a rinse and measure next time.
  5. Level. Check all four feet touch the floor and the top is level side to side and front to back.
  6. Drain hose. U-form attached; only 4.5 in (113 mm) into the standpipe; no tape over the opening; no kinks; standpipe height within Maytag's limits.
  7. Lid / door. Nothing under the lid; wipe detergent build-up off the lid lock area; nothing heavy sitting on the lid (LdU).
  8. Codes. For F# E#, Maytag says press Start/Pause once to clear, then again to restart. If it doesn't clear, schedule service.
  9. Front-load pump filter. On models with an access door, clean the drain pump filter per your manual.

How to know it's fixed: Drain & Spin on a balanced load drains the water and reaches full spin with no Ofb, LdL, Sud, or F# E#, and clothes come out damp, not dripping.

Code meanings from Maytag US Product Help "Error Codes On Maytag Top Load Washers"; steps from "Not Spinning - Washer", "Not Spinning - Front Load Washer", and "Washer Not Draining or Spinning? Troubleshooting Guide" (sources 1–4), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 11), which maps manufacturer codes to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty, has no Maytag entries, so the code→part table above is our own mapping from Maytag's pages and the part catalog, not Maytag wording. Maytag shares many codes with Whirlpool-family washers; see our Whirlpool washer not spinning guide for the same family.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer. Drain or bail out the water. Towels down. Keep the model number handy.

1. LdL, or it never locks and never spins

Likely causes: something under the lid, detergent build-up on the lock, a damaged lid strike, or a failed lid lock assembly (top-load). Front-loads: a failed door lock.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (top panel or console up, power off).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Lid lock assemblyLocks the lid before high-speed spinModerate
Door lock (front-load)Locks the door and tells the control it's shutModerate

2. Ofb on normal loads; shakes and stops

Likely causes: the washer isn't level, or worn suspension springs or rods let the tub sway.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Suspension springs / rodsHold and damp the tubModerate

3. Agitates fine, but the basket never spins (top-load)

Likely causes: a failed shift actuator (it switches the drive between agitate and spin on many direct-drive top-loads), or a worn drive belt on belt-drive models.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (washer tipped back, power off).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Shift actuatorSwitches between wash and spinModerate
Drive beltConnects the motor to the transmissionModerate

4. Water stays in the tub; drn

Likely causes: the drain hose setup, a clogged pump filter (front-load), or a failed drain pump.

DIY difficulty: Easy (hose, filter) to Advanced (pump).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pumpPumps water out before spinAdvanced

5. Motor hums or stays silent; F# E# keeps coming back

Likely causes: the drive motor, the motor control board, or the main control board.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first. If the washer was made after 2017, Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers the drive motor; you'd pay labor after year 1.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a washer

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (see Sources); your model's warranty document has the final terms:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and labor (Maytag major laundry appliances made after 2017)Maytag
Years 2–10Limited parts coverage on the drive motor and wash basket (washers)You pay labor
Bonus (named models)MVW6230RH: 5-year limited parts and labor, then parts-only on the motor and basket to year 10. MVWP586GW: all parts and labor for 5 years, plus the 10-year parts coverage (single-family, non-commercial use)See model warranty

What this means for a washer that won't spin: in year 1, any failed part is covered. After that, a drive motor is still a covered part through year 10 on eligible models, so a motor repair may cost you labor only. A lid lock, actuator, belt, pump, or board after year 1 is on you unless you have one of the bonus-coverage models or an extended service plan. Settings, suds, and installation problems (hose, level) aren't defects.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; drive motor parts to year 10 (made after 2017); bonus coverage on named models; plus retailer or credit-card extended protection or a Maytag extended service plan.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: balance routine, spin setting, Bulky cycle, HE detergent, level, drain hose, lid lock area, code clear, Drain & Spin.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the part is covered by Maytag's 10-year warranty.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Maytag and Whirlpool-family part numbers (Maytag is a Whirlpool Corporation brand) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for Maytag washer parts (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general unless noted, not Maytag-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Maytag top-load leaves towels soaking wet. The Normal cycle had been saved with No Spin after a delicate load. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Maytag (made after 2017) has a failed drive motor. The motor part is covered by the 10-year warranty; you pay the visit and labor: R = $200; N = $950; no other repairs.
200 ÷ 950 = 21%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 21% → Repair (usually fine; check for other wear).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 9-year-old Maytag needs a main control board (not on the 10-year list) after a $250 drain pump last year. R = $500; N = $950.
500 ÷ 950 = 53%; life used 9 ÷ 10 = 90%; repeat check (500 + 250) ÷ 950 = 79% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board on a washer near 10 years old, a second big repair in about 2 years, or rust or a cracked tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lid lock, actuator, belt, or springs; the washer is under about 7 years old; or the motor part is inside Maytag's 10-year coverage.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by overloading or installation. A washer that's already broken is usually not covered. Maytag sells extended service plans on new appliances and advertises savings when you buy within 30 days of purchase.

FAQ

Why is my Maytag washer not spinning?
Maytag's list: an unbalanced load, Low or No Spin selected (remembered per cycle), a delicate cycle, a single bulky item, too much or non-HE detergent, an unlevel washer, a drain hose problem, or a power failure during spin. The lid or door must also lock.

What does Ofb mean on a Maytag washer?
The load is out of balance and the washer is running a correction routine. Let it continue. If it stops with the dial flashing, redistribute the load, close the lid, and press Start/Pause.

What does LdL mean on a Maytag washer?
The lid isn't locking. Check for items directly under the lid and detergent build-up around the lid lock.

Why are clothes soaking wet after a Maytag wash?
Usually a low-spin or no-spin setting, a delicate cycle, suds from too much detergent, or an unbalanced load. Run Drain & Spin after fixing the cause.

How do I clear an F# E# code on a Maytag washer?
Press Start/Pause once to clear it, then press Start/Pause again to restart. If it won't clear, schedule service.

Does Maytag's 10-year warranty cover a washer that won't spin?
It covers the drive motor and wash basket as parts for 10 years on Maytag washers made after 2017, plus all parts and labor in year 1. After year 1, you pay labor, and parts like the lid lock or board aren't on the 10-year list.

How high should a Maytag drain standpipe be?
Maytag's top-load spin page says 39 to 96 inches; its drain guide says 30 to 96 inches. Only 4.5 inches of hose should go into the standpipe, and don't tape the opening.

Is it worth fixing a Maytag washer that won't spin?
Usually. Most causes are free, and lid locks and actuators are cheap parts. A motor may be a warranty part. A board on a washer near 10 years old leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
