Quick answer

Water near the outlet? Turn off the washer's circuit breaker before you touch the plug, and close both water taps behind the washer.

Good news first: LG says leaks are often easily resolved without a technician once you find the source. LG also warns that if the leak isn't caused by a fault in the washer (a tap, a house drain, a loose hose), the service visit is paid even during the warranty period. So find the source first.

LG's leak test: run a Rinse + Spin (or rinse) cycle with an empty drum and watch.

The usual culprits, cheapest first:

  1. Drain filter cap or emergency drain hose cap not closed tightly after cleaning (front-load).
  2. Hair, lint, or detergent on the door gasket or door glass (front-load).
  3. Inlet hose connections: loose, cross-threaded, or a worn rubber washer in the hose end.
  4. Drain hose slipped out of the standpipe, or a clogged standpipe backing up.
  5. Too much detergent or non-HE detergent: suds push water out the safety air vent at the back.
  6. Dispenser buildup: residue makes the drawer overflow.

If none of those, the usual failed parts are a torn door gasket, a cracked drain hose or drain pump, a leaking water inlet valve, or an internal hose.

Repair or replace? Most leak fixes are free or cheap. A cracked outer tub or failed tub seal and bearings on an older washer is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.

LG's empty-drum leak test (10 minutes)

  1. Empty the drum and dry the floor around and under the washer completely. A dry floor makes the source obvious.
  2. Run a Rinse + Spin cycle (LG's front-load guidance also allows a single rinse cycle).
  3. As it fills, look at the door, the detergent dispenser, and the drain filter panel.
  4. While it runs, look behind the washer at both inlet hoses (hot and cold) and the drain hose: no splits, cracks, or drips at the connections.
  5. During draining, watch the standpipe or floor drain. LG notes that water leaking from the back while draining often means the house drain is clogged.

How to know it's fixed: a full normal cycle with your usual load leaves the floor dry, including under the front edge and behind the washer.

Five-minute fixes by source

Door gasket (front-load)

LG says door leaks come from hair, lint, or residue on the gasket or the inside of the door glass, or from a damaged gasket.

  1. With gloves on, mix 3/4 cup of bleach or vinegar in 1 gallon of water. LG says never use straight bleach on the gasket; it breaks the rubber down.
  2. Wipe the inside of the door glass, top to bottom, and the edge where it meets the gasket.
  3. Pull back the lip of the gasket and clean underneath; remove hair, lint, and detergent buildup.
  4. Run a Tub Clean cycle and check for leaks.
  5. Torn or damaged gasket, or still leaking when clean: LG says the washer needs repair service.

Also: don't pack the drum so tightly it pushes the door out of alignment, and make sure sleeves and corners aren't trapped between the door and gasket.

Drain filter panel (front-load)

LG says leaks here come from a loose manual drain hose cap or a drain pump filter that isn't seated or threaded in properly.

  1. Turn off and unplug the washer; open the bottom-left service panel.
  2. Check the small drain hose isn't cracked; drain it into a shallow pan.
  3. Remove, clean, and reinstall the filter so it's threaded correctly and stops turning. LG says don't over-tighten; that can damage the filter.
  4. Cap the drain hose firmly and push it fully back inside. LG warns the hose can slip inside the washer if it isn't secured.

Inlet hoses, washers, and inlet filters

LG says these leaks are usually loose or cross-threaded connections, slightly damaged hoses, damaged rubber washers, or clogged inlet filters.

  1. Turn off both taps. Keep a bucket ready for water left in the hoses.
  2. Check both hoses for kinks, cracks, punctures, or wet spots at both ends.
  3. If an end is wet, unscrew it and check the rubber washer inside the fitting. Replace it if it's worn, torn, or missing.
  4. Use needle-nose pliers to pull the inlet filters out of the washer's inlet valves; rinse and brush them clean; push them back in.
  5. Reconnect the hoses carefully so they thread straight, turn the taps on, and check again.
  6. Still leaking from the hose? Replace the hose. Leaking from the tap itself? Call a plumber. Leaking from inside the back of the washer? LG says request a repair.

Drain hose and standpipe

  1. Make sure the drain hose is fully inserted into the standpipe or sink and secured (LG supplies a tie strap). A hose that pops out during drain floods the floor.
  2. Check the hose for holes, cracks, or kinks. LG says a cracked drain hose needs a repair visit.
  3. Gallon test: pour one gallon of water quickly into the standpipe. If it backs up and spills over, the house drain is clogged; clear it or call a plumber.
  4. LG also notes a drain that's too small in diameter or partly blocked can overflow even though the washer is fine.

Suds and the safety air vent

LG says water or suds from the safety air vent on the back mean detergent residue has built up.

Detergent dispenser

LG says dispenser leaks come from an obstruction or detergent/additive buildup. Pull the drawer out, press the PUSH tab to release it, lift out the inserts (front first; the rear tabs are delicate), wash by hand with warm water, wipe the cavity, dry, and reinstall. On top-loaders, LG says residue in the bleach dispenser can overflow under the washer; pour hot water through it and run Tub Clean.

Top-load splashing

LG says a top-loader can be fully loaded but not tightly packed, and clothes shouldn't sit above the top row of holes in the drum. Floating items (duvets, puffer jackets) can splash water out on Normal; use Bedding or Functional Cloth cycles and push the item under the water. A water level set too high can also splash.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn off the breaker and unplug the washer, close both taps, and drain the drum through the drain filter hose. Keep water away from outlets and cords.

1. Leaks from the front door on the empty test, gasket clean

Likely causes: a torn or worn door gasket (boot), or a door out of alignment.

Signs: drips from the bottom of the door during fill and wash; a visible tear or hole in the folds; mildew damage.

DIY difficulty: Advanced (two clamp rings, the front panel on many models).

Call a pro if: you've never removed a gasket clamp ring; a misfit gasket leaks worse than the old one.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door gasket (boot)Seals the door to the tubAdvanced

2. Leaks at the back during fill, hoses dry and tight

Likely causes: a leaking water inlet valve (cracked body or failed seal), or an internal dispenser hose.

Signs: water runs down the inside of the back panel only while filling; FE code on some models.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (top or back panel off).

Call a pro if: water is reaching wiring inside the cabinet.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

3. Leaks underneath during drain, filter seated and cap tight

Likely causes: a cracked drain pump housing or seal, a split internal drain hose, or a loose clamp.

Signs: water appears under the front-center during the drain and spin; OE may also show.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

4. Leaks from under the tub, with grinding or roaring on spin

Likely causes: a failed tub seal that let water reach the bearings, or a cracked outer tub.

Signs: rust-colored water or streaks under the washer; loud roaring on spin; the drum feels loose.

DIY difficulty: Pro only in practice (full teardown).

Call a pro if: you see this at all. Get a diagnosis and a written quote before deciding. This is the repair that most often tips the decision toward replacing.

What LG's warranty covers on a washer

LG's 2026 US washer limited warranty (the version for many current models):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and laborLG
Up to 3 yearsStainless steel tub (part only)You
Up to 10 yearsDirect Drive Motor (part only)You

What this means for a leak: a torn gasket, a cracked pump, or a leaking inlet valve is a year-1 repair. LG warns that if the leak isn't a washer fault (a tap, a clogged house drain, a loose hose, detergent overuse), the visit is paid even during the warranty period. Run the empty-drum test first. Some LG models carry different terms; check your model. Keep your proof of purchase.

โ†’ Check your model's warranty on LG's site ยท Request a repair

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Run LG's empty-drum leak test. If it doesn't leak empty, it's probably not a washer fault, and a warranty visit may be billed.
  2. Warranty: year 1, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are OEM LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general, not LG-specific quotes. Tip: do the empty-drum test and note where and when (fill, wash, drain, spin) the water appears before the technician arrives. It shortens the visit.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 10โ€“11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8โ€“13-year average for washers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace. Also add the cost of any floor or ceiling damage a repeat leak could cause.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG front-load leaks from the bottom-left panel after the filter was cleaned. The cap wasn't pushed on fully. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old LG front-load leaks from the door on the empty test; the gasket has a tear. A tech replaces it: R = $300; N = $1,000; no other repairs.
300 รท 1,000 = 30%; life used 5 รท 11 = 45%; repeat check 30% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG front-load leaks rusty water from under the tub and roars on spin. The tech quotes an outer tub and bearings: R = $750; N = $900. It had a $250 pump last year.
750 รท 900 = 83%; life used 11 รท 11 = 100%; repeat check (750 + 250) รท 900 = over 100% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: tub seal or bearing failure, a cracked outer tub, rust, or a washer past about 10 years with other problems.
Tips toward repairing: it's a cap, hose, washer, gasket, valve, or pump; the washer is in year 1; or it's part of a matched stacked set.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Who services LG washers near you

1. LG (warranty or official service). In year 1, start with LG, after the empty-drum test shows the washer itself leaks.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty, or the leak is inside the cabinet).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them where the water appears, when (fill, wash, drain, spin), and whether it leaks on an empty cycle.

Need a repair pro?
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.

3. A plumber. If the standpipe overflows on the gallon test, or the tap itself leaks.

4. DIY with the right part. Hoses, rubber washers, dispensers, and drain caps are easy DIY. Gaskets and valves are doable with care. Order by your exact model number.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude water damage, plumbing problems, and installation errors, and a washer that's already leaking is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my LG washer leaking from the bottom?
On front-loaders, the most common cause is a drain filter or emergency drain hose cap that wasn't closed tightly after cleaning. Otherwise, run LG's empty Rinse + Spin test: if it doesn't leak empty, LG says it's likely not a washer problem (suds, load, tap, or house drain).

Why is my LG front-load washer leaking from the door?
LG says hair, lint, or residue on the door gasket or glass causes most door leaks. Clean the gasket with 3/4 cup of bleach or vinegar in a gallon of water (never straight bleach), including under the lip. If the gasket is torn, request service.

Why is my LG washer leaking from the back?
Usually a loose or cross-threaded inlet hose, a worn rubber washer, a clogged drain standpipe, or suds coming out of the safety air vent from too much detergent.

Can too much detergent make an LG washer leak?
Yes. LG says non-HE or excess detergent causes suds that can leak from the safety air vent. Use HE only, often 1โ€“2 tablespoons, dilute softener 50/50, and run Tub Clean.

How do I test if my LG washer is really leaking?
Run a Rinse + Spin cycle with the drum empty and the floor dry, and watch the door, dispenser, drain filter panel, hoses, and drain. If it leaks, request service; if not, the cause is likely outside the washer.

Does LG's warranty cover a leaking washer?
A part failure in year 1 is covered for parts and labor. LG says that if the leak isn't caused by a washer fault, a paid service fee may apply even during the warranty period.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking LG washer?
Often nothing. Fixr puts a typical washer leak repair at $75 to $200. OEM LG door gaskets were listed at about $108 to $231 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30.

Is it worth fixing an LG washer that leaks?
Usually yes for caps, hoses, gaskets, valves, and pumps. A failed tub seal with worn bearings or a cracked outer tub on an older washer usually isn't. Use the calculator above.
