LG Washer Not Draining? Drain Pump Filter, Kinked or High Hose, Clogged House Drain, Suds, Frozen Pump, Drain Pump, Lid Lock — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most LG washers that won't drain have a clog, not a broken part. LG's support pages list the causes in this order:
- Clogged drain pump filter (front-load and washer-dryer combos only). Open the service cover at the bottom front, drain the leftover water through the small residual hose into a shallow pan, then twist out the filter and clean it. The water may be hot. LG says top-load washers don't have this filter.
- Kinked, pinched, or frozen drain hose. Pull the washer out and straighten the hose. LG asks for at least 4 inches behind the washer and 1 inch on each side so the hose isn't crushed.
- Your home's drain is clogged. Take the hose out of the standpipe, hold it over a bucket or tub, and run Spin Only. If water pours out of the hose, the washer is fine and the house drain needs clearing.
- Too many suds. If the filter is clean, LG says excess suds can make air pockets that the pump can't move. Run Tub Clean and use less detergent.
- Frozen washer. Pour warm water (122–140°F / 50–60°C) into the drum, close the door, and wait 1–2 hours. Never use boiling water (LG).
Pump test: during Spin Only, a front-load LG pump should hum for the first 15 seconds (LG). No hum = LG says the washer needs repair service.
Repair or replace? A clog is free. A drain pump is a mid-priced repair and usually worth it. A control board on an older washer is where the calculator matters.
If your washer shows OE, see our LG washer OE error guide too; this page also covers slow draining with no code, top-load models, and what each repair costs.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Lint, coins, or a sock in the pump filter; hose kinked behind the washer; standpipe backs up; heavy suds; cold garage | Clog, hose, house drain, detergent, or freezing | ✅ Free fix. Clean, straighten, thaw, cut detergent |
| Filter clean, hose clear, house drain fine, but no hum during Spin Only, or OE keeps coming back | Drain pump, pump wiring, lid lock (top-load), pressure sensing | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Washer 8–10+ years old, a board quoted, or a second big repair in two years | Control board or several parts on an older washer | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new washer |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- The water may be hot. LG warns the leftover water can cause burns. Let a hot cycle cool before you open the filter.
- Water is on the floor near the outlet or cord. Turn off the breaker before you touch the plug.
- Unplug before opening the service cover. LG's filter steps start with turning off the washer and pulling the plug.
- Expect a lot of water. A full front-load tub holds more than one pan. Drain a little at a time and keep towels ready.
- Burning smell, buzzing, or a tripped breaker. Leave it off and call for service.
- Never pour boiling water into a frozen washer (LG): it can deform parts.
- Still under warranty? Use LG's warranty service before removing panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site. We found a 2012 recall of three LG top-load models (WT5001CW, WT5101HV, WT5101HW) for a drum that could come loose when the washer shook with an unbalanced load, not for draining. Check your model and serial anyway.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG washer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label. On the WT7700H*A top-load, LG's manual shows it on the back of the washer; front-load labels are often inside the door opening or on the back (check yours).
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Has a drain pump filter you can clean? | How to run Spin Only (examples) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load | Usually WM (check label) | Yes, behind the service cover at the bottom front (left on most, right on some) | Power, then Spin Speed to High, then Start/Pause (LG OE article) |
| Washer-dryer combo | Varies (check label) | Yes (LG) | See your manual |
| Top-load | Usually WT (check label) | No (LG) | Special Use key to Spin Only, or the Options button on some models (LG article and manual) |
| Pedestal (SideKick) washer | Usually WD (check label) | See its manual | See its manual |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual shows the exact Spin Only buttons and where your filter is.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Pull the washer out and look at the drain hose. Straighten any kink. Make sure it isn't pinched between the washer and the wall.
- Bucket test (LG's "self-test"): take the hose out of the standpipe or laundry tub, hold it in a bucket, press Power, and run Spin Only. Water gushes out → the house drain is the problem, not the washer.
- Front-load? Open the small service cover at the bottom. Put a shallow pan under it. Unclip the little residual water hose, pull its cap, and let it drain. LG says don't pull that hose out too far: it kinks. If nothing comes out, push it back in about 1 inch.
- Twist the filter counter-clockwise, pull it, and clean it with a soft brush or old toothbrush and warm water. Not in the dishwasher (LG). Wipe out the opening, then refit it until it stops turning.
- Suds? If the drum is full of foam, run Tub Clean, and use less HE detergent next time.
- Cold room? If the washer sat below freezing, thaw it with warm water and wait 1–2 hours. For a frozen drain hose, LG says to wrap it in a towel soaked in warm water.
- Listen. Start Spin Only and listen for a hum in the first 15 seconds.
How to know it's fixed: the drum empties during Spin Only and the next cycle finishes without OE.
What LG says vs. what LG says (help pages and the owner's manual)
LG's own help pages and manual don't agree on several details. Here they are side by side so you can follow the one that matches your model:
| Topic | LG Help Library pages | LG WT7700H*A top-load owner's manual | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drain hose height | Front-load "not draining" page: keep the hose on a level surface and no higher than 20 inches (50 cm) from the floor | Normal height 35–47 in from the floor; end of hose not lower than 29 in or higher than 96 in above the bottom of the washer, and not more than 60 in away; for a laundry tub, the end must be at least 29 in above the floor | These can't both apply to the same hose end. Follow your model's installation section. If your hose end sits very high or very low, that's worth fixing either way |
| Standpipe depth | Not covered | No more than 8 in into the standpipe; never make an airtight seal (siphoning) | Follow the manual |
| How to start Spin Only | Front-load OE: Power → Spin Speed to High → Start/Pause. Top-load OE: Power → Special Use until Spin Only → Start/Pause | WT7700H*A: Power → Options until Spin Only | Buttons differ by model; use your manual |
| Forced drain | Top-load OE: start a cycle and pause it; after 8 minutes the washer times out, shows dr, and drains | WT7700H*A: paused more than 4 minutes, the cycle cancels and water drains (shown as a notice, not an error) | The wait differs by model; give it at least 8 minutes |
| OE timing | Top-load: OE appears if the washer can't drain for 13 minutes | Lists "drains slowly or not at all" with kinked hose and 96 in max drain height | Treat slow draining like OE |
| Clearance | "Water Not Draining" page: 4 in behind, 1 in each side | Not covered in the drain section | Use LG's clearances |
Codes and signs (and what LG says to do)
| What you see | What LG says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OE | Washer can't drain (top-load: for 13 minutes) | Hose, filter, house drain, suds, frozen pump; then Spin Only and listen for the hum |
| dr (top-load, after a pause) | Forced drain after the washer times out | Wait; it's trying to drain |
| Water drains very slowly | Same causes as OE (LG "Water Not Draining" page) | Same checks |
| FF, OE, or IE in cold weather (top-load) | Drain hose or faucet frozen (LG frozen-washer article) | Warm water in the tub, wait 1–2 hours; wrap a frozen drain hose in a towel soaked in warm water; then Spin Only |
| Lid lock error (top-load) | Lid not closed, or lid lock switch fault (manual) | Close the lid, check nothing is caught; if it stays, call for service. The manual says the washer won't spin unless the lid is locked |
| Objects caught under the wash plate (top-load) | Coins, pins, clips between the wash plate and the basket (manual) | Use the manual's drain-and-spin step, then remove the objects |
| No hum during Spin Only | Drain pump isn't running (LG) | LG says request repair |
Codes and meanings from LG USA Help Library and the WT7700H*A owner's manual (sources 1–7), checked 2026-10-30. The manual prints most codes as images, so we name a code only where an LG page spells it out. The part mapping below is our own from those pages and LG's parts catalog.
Symptom → likely part
| Symptom | Most likely part | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Front-load, slow drain, OE, filter full of lint or coins | Drain pump filter (clean it; replace if cracked) | Easy |
| Water won't leave even with the hose in a bucket; hose kinked or crushed | Drain hose | Moderate |
| Hum during Spin Only but no flow, filter and hose clear | Blockage between filter and hose, or a pump with a damaged impeller | Advanced |
| No hum during Spin Only | Drain pump or its wiring/control | Advanced |
| Top-load won't spin out, lid lock message | Lid lock assembly | Pro only |
| Fills or drains at the wrong times, odd levels | Pressure switch or its hose (a tech confirms) | Pro only |
| Pump tests fine, codes keep returning | Control board | Pro only |
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer. Drain the tub first, through the residual hose on front-loads. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready.
1. Front-load drains slowly, or OE after a load of towels or kids' clothes
Likely cause: the drain pump filter is packed with lint, hair, coins, or a small item. LG recommends cleaning it monthly, and checking it any time you notice slow draining or OE.
DIY difficulty: Easy.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump filter | Catches coins, buttons, and lint before the pump | Easy |
2. Water drains into a bucket fine, but not into the standpipe
Likely cause: the house drain, not the washer. LG says to clear your drain pipe. Also check the hose isn't pushed more than 8 in into the standpipe or sealed airtight (manual).
DIY difficulty: Easy to check; call a plumber for a blocked drain.
3. Hose kinked, crushed, cracked, or frozen
Likely cause: the drain hose. Straighten it first. Replace it if it's split or flattened.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain hose | Carries water from the pump to the standpipe | Moderate |
4. No hum at all during Spin Only
Likely cause: the drain pump isn't running. LG's instruction is direct: if you can't hear the hum, the unit requires repair service.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pushes water out of the tub | Advanced |
5. Top-load won't spin out; lid lock error
Likely cause: something under the lid, or the lid lock. The manual says the washer won't spin unless the lid is locked, and to call for service if the lid is closed and the message stays.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Lid lock and switch assembly | Locks the lid so the washer can spin | Pro only |
6. Everything checks out, but codes keep coming back
Likely cause: a pressure switch (water-level sensor) or the control board. These need testing by a technician. Cost guides list both as washer repairs (Fixr, HomeGuide).
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water-level pressure switch and hose | Tells the board how much water is in the tub | Pro only |
| Main control board (PCB) | Runs the pump, motor, and cycle | Pro only |
Filter clean, hose clear, still standing water? A technician can test the pump, lid lock, and board in one visit.

Prevent it next time
- Clean the front-load pump filter monthly (LG), and any time draining slows.
- Empty pockets. Coins, pins, and clips end up in the filter or under the wash plate.
- Use HE detergent, and less of it. Too many suds can stop draining (LG).
- Keep 4 inches behind the washer so the hose can't be crushed (LG).
- Set the hose to your manual's height and standpipe depth, with no airtight seal.
- Protect it from freezing. LG says to drain leftover water and point the drain hose down, unbent, before a cold spell. LG's manual also describes winterizing with RV antifreeze for washers stored in freezing spaces.
- Run Tub Clean monthly, or more often with heavy use (manual).

What LG's warranty covers on a washer
Per the limited warranty printed in LG's WT7700H*A owner's manual (re-read 2026-10-30). Coverage varies by model and year, so check the sheet for yours:
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from purchase) | Any internal or functional parts and labor | LG |
| 10 years | Drum motor (stator, rotor, hall sensor), parts only | You |
| Lifetime | Stainless steel drum, parts only | You |
What this means for a washer that won't drain: a failed drain pump or board in year 1 is covered. LG's warranty doesn't cover instruction on product use, correcting installation or plumbing, or damage from frozen pipes or restricted drain lines. That's why a clogged standpipe or a frozen hose is on you. Keep your dated receipt. LG's US number in the manual is 1-800-243-0000.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; your model's sheet; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Free fixes done: hose, bucket test, filter, suds, thaw, hum test.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "lg washer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; dishwasher parts, other brands' parts, and Kenmore-labeled parts were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general unless marked, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

| New comparable washer | — | [GUIDE] new washer $700–$1,300 (G2); basic washer about $450 (G1) |
Part prices checked 2026-10-30 on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S1–S6). Pro-cost cells tagged [GUIDE] from G1 (Fixr) and G2 (HomeGuide), re-read 2026-10-30; [GUIDE] figures are national averages, not LG-specific quotes except where marked. Prices change; confirm with your model number.
Tip: drain the tub and clean the filter before the tech arrives. HomeGuide says a washer full of undrained water typically adds an extra hour of labor.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside HomeGuide's 8–13 range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old LG front-load shows OE. The pump filter is packed with lint and a hair tie. Cleaning it fixes the drain. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG front-load is silent during Spin Only. A tech replaces the drain pump: R = $330; N = $1,000.
330 ÷ 1,000 = 33%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 33% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG top-load won't drain and keeps throwing codes; it had a lid lock last year ($220). The tech quotes a main board: R = $520; N = $1,000.
520 ÷ 1,000 = 52%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = over 100%; repeat check (520 + 220) ÷ 1,000 = 74% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board on an older washer, repeated failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, hose, or pump; the washer is under about 7 years old (HomeGuide's line); or it's covered.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and HomeGuide uses it too ("costs less than 50% of a new washer"). Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A plumber (house drain). If the bucket test drains fine, the clog is in your standpipe or drain line. HomeGuide lists plumbers at $45–$150 per hour.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you clean the pump filter and do the bucket test first?
- Did the pump hum, and did you check for a blockage before replacing it?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude clogs, plumbing, and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why is there water left in my LG washer?
Most often a clogged drain pump filter (front-load), a kinked hose, or a clogged house drain. LG also lists too many suds and a frozen pump.
Where is the drain filter on an LG washer?
On front-load washers and combos, behind the small service cover at the bottom front, usually on the left (some models on the right). LG says top-load washers don't have one.
How do I force my LG washer to drain?
Run Spin Only. On LG top-loads, LG also says you can start a cycle and pause it; after 8 minutes the washer shows dr and drains. Some manuals give 4 minutes.
My LG washer drains into a bucket but not the standpipe. Why?
The house drain is likely clogged. LG says that's a plumbing problem, not the washer.
How do I know if my LG drain pump is bad?
Run Spin Only and listen for a hum in the first 15 seconds. LG says no hum means the washer needs repair service.
Can I pour boiling water into a frozen LG washer?
No. LG says boiling water can deform or damage parts. Use warm water (122–140°F) and wait 1–2 hours.
How much does it cost to fix an LG washer that won't drain?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, LG drain pumps were listed at about $27 to $283. Fixr puts a won't-drain repair at $150 to $300.
Should I replace an LG washer that won't drain?
Rarely for a clog or pump. Consider it when a board quote passes half the price of a new washer on a washer near 10 years old.
