Quick answer

Maytag's leak articles start with the water supply: a cracked line, tubing not fully pushed into a fitting, or a leaking saddle or shutoff valve. Find where the water is, then work from the cheapest check up.

Maytag's own checks, by where the water is:

  1. Behind the fridge or at the bottom: the household supply line. Unplug the fridge, find the line at the back, and look for cracks or kinks. Maytag says the tubing must be firmly inserted into every fitting and every fitting tightened, at the supply (saddle or shutoff) valve and at the back of the fridge.
  2. At the water filter: a filter that was just replaced and isn't seated, a cracked filter, or missing O-rings. Maytag says replace the filter about every 6 months; minerals can break down an old filter's housing. Can't replace it right now? Many Maytag models run in bypass with the filter removed.
  3. From the dispenser: a few drops after you release the lever are normal; hold the glass 2–3 seconds. A full drip tray spills down the front; it's removable. Ice shavings in the chute melt and drip: Maytag says dispense 8–10 cubes after crushed ice.
  4. Around the ice maker: Maytag's blog lists a clogged ice chute, an unlevel fridge or ice bin, an unsecured water line, and a misaligned fill cup.
  5. Inside the fresh food section: a warm item sweating on a shelf, a leaking container, a filter or interior dispenser drip, or, if it keeps coming back under the crisper drawers, a blocked defrost drain.

Repair or replace? Most Maytag leaks are cheap: a filter, a fitting, a supply line, a drain tube, an inlet valve. A fridge is rarely worth replacing over a leak alone. See the calculator below.

Which Maytag refrigerator do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label inside the fridge; its exact spot varies by style, so check your Use & Care Guide. You need it to order the right filter, valve, or drain part, and to check warranty status.

StyleModel prefix (examples)Where leaks usually startNotes
French-door bottom-freezerOften MFI, MFF, MRFF (check label)Filter, dispenser line, supply line, freezer floorMaytag's bottom-freezer articles cover the filter area and the dispenser

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Wipe it up and watch. A spilled container or a door left ajar can leave water that isn't a leak. Maytag also notes a warm item can sweat and drip onto a shelf. Wipe everything dry and look again after normal use.
  2. Look at where it collects. Behind = supply side. At the filter = filter. Under the dispenser = drip tray or chute. Inside, under the drawers = defrost drain. Write it down; it saves a service visit.
  3. Empty the drip tray. On side-by-side models, Maytag says the drip-tray insert is removable: push down on its rear edge to lift it out. A full tray spills down the front of the fridge.
  4. Check the filter. Remove and re-seat it, look for cracks, and make sure the O-rings are in place. If it's been more than about 6 months, replace it.
  5. Check behind the fridge. Unplug it and close the water first. Look for cracks or kinks in the supply line and drips at the valve and at the back of the fridge. Push tubing firmly into each fitting and tighten it.
  6. Check level. Maytag says an unlevel fridge can make doors close improperly (which means more frost and meltwater), and its ice-maker blog says an unlevel fridge or ice bin can make the ice maker leak. Your Use & Care Guide shows how to level it.
  7. Don't panic about gurgling. Maytag says a gurgling sound is normal: it's defrost water running to the drain pan. A sizzling sound is water dripping on the defrost heater, also normal.

How to know it's fixed: the floor, the drip tray, and the drawer bottoms stay dry for 48 hours of normal use, and no new ice forms on the freezer floor.

Water behind the fridge: supply line, fittings, and valves

Maytag's "Leaking from Behind," "Leaking at the Bottom," and "How to Check the Water Supply Line" articles all start here. Signs: water at the back bottom of the fridge, or a wet line or valve.

Maytag's steps:

  1. Unplug the fridge. Close the water shutoff.
  2. Find the supply line. Maytag says it's typically connected at the back, often through a saddle valve on the house pipe.
  3. Look for visible damage: cracks or kinks. Replace a damaged line; straighten a kink (it also cuts water flow).
  4. Check both ends: at the supply valve (saddle or shutoff style) and where the tubing connects to the back of the refrigerator. Make sure the tubing is firmly inserted into all fittings and all fittings are tightened.
  5. Check the household connection too. Maytag's dispenser article says a loose water connection at the bottom of the fridge compartment, near the hinge, or at the house connection can cause drips.

Installation details Maytag gives: a cold water supply, using 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) outside-diameter soft copper or PEX tubing. Leave a coil (service loop) so the fridge can be pulled out for cleaning, and don't push the fridge too far back against the wall or cabinet; that can pinch the line. Maytag says to use a 1/4-inch saddle valve that needs a drilled hole, not a piercing-type or 3/16-inch valve, and to check local plumbing codes before using a saddle valve at all.

When it's a plumber, not an appliance pro: the shutoff or saddle valve itself leaks, the house pipe is damaged, or the leak is in the wall. Maytag itself suggests a licensed plumber for household plumbing questions.

Leaks from the water filter

Maytag's side-by-side "Leaking at the Bottom" and "Water Inside of Refrigerator" articles, and the bottom-freezer "Leaking from the Filter Area" article, cover the filter:

  1. Just changed it? A filter that isn't seated properly can leak at the filter area, and can also cause reduced or no ice and poor dispensing. Remove it and reinstall it.
  2. Inspect for cracks. Replace a cracked filter. Make sure the O-rings are in place.
  3. Replace on time. Maytag says replace the filter every 6 months, when the filter light comes on, or as needed. Over time, minerals in the water can break down the filter's housing.
  4. Use bypass if you must. Maytag says that if you can't replace a leaking filter right away, many models can run in bypass mode with the filter removed. Check your guide first; not every model has a bypass.
  5. Flush after a change. Maytag's general guidance is to dispense in 5 seconds on, 5 seconds off bursts until about 3 gallons (12 L) have run through.

Still leaking with a new, seated filter? The filter housing may be cracked. That's a replaceable part, but on many models it means removing a cover with the water off.

Dispenser dripping or leaking

Maytag's side-by-side "Leaking from Dispenser" article lists these checks:

  1. Normal last drops. A few drops come out after you release the lever. Hold the glass under the dispenser 2–3 seconds after releasing it.
  2. Drip tray full? The drip-tray insert is removable (push down on the rear edge). Empty it and dry it.
  3. Ice shavings in the chute. After crushed ice, pieces stay in the chute and melt. Maytag's tip: dispense 8–10 cubes after crushed ice.
  4. Loose water connection. Check the connection at the bottom of the fridge compartment, near the hinge, and at the household supply.
  5. Filter cracked or O-rings missing. See the filter section above.

Slow or uneven water at the dispenser too? Maytag says house water pressure should be at or above 35 psi. Remove the filter to test flow: if flow improves, the filter is the restriction.

Drips with the dispenser idle and the filter checked? The water inlet valve may not be shutting fully, or a line in the door may be loose. Both are service items on most models.

Ice maker leaking

Maytag's "How to Fix an Ice Maker That's Leaking Water" blog lists these causes and fixes:

Prevent it: Maytag says keep the filter installed correctly and the lines flushed.

If the ice maker itself won't make ice, start with Maytag's ice-maker troubleshooting in your guide; our Whirlpool ice maker not working guide covers the same Whirlpool-family ice makers.

Water inside the fridge or ice on the freezer floor that keeps coming back

When the automatic defrost cycle melts frost off the evaporator, the water runs down a defrost drain to a drain pan at the bottom of the fridge, where it evaporates. Maytag's own "gurgling" article describes exactly that: defrost water running to the drain pan is normal.

What Maytag's US articles don't cover: we didn't find a Maytag Product Help page on a blocked defrost drain. The guidance below comes from Whirlpool Corporation, Maytag's parent company, on whirlpool.com, and applies to Whirlpool-family refrigerators. It's not Maytag-branded wording:

What you can do safely before the visit:

What usually needs a pro or confident DIY: removing the freezer's rear (evaporator) cover to flush the drain trough, replacing the drain tube, and testing the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. If the drain freezes again and again, the defrost system itself may not be clearing the evaporator.

Related: our Whirlpool refrigerator leaking water guide covers the same drain on Whirlpool-brand models.

Maytag codes and clues linked to leaks

Maytag's US leak articles don't list error codes for leaks; they diagnose by where the water is. Many models show a filter light when it's time to replace the filter. Your Use & Care Guide has the codes and lights for your model. Use these clues instead:

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker, and close the water supply valve. Move food to a cooler.

1. Water inside the fridge, under the doors, or ice on the freezer floor keeps returning

Likely causes: a blocked or frozen defrost drain, a defrost heater or defrost thermostat that isn't clearing the evaporator fully, or a drain tube off its fitting.

Signs: clear ice (refrozen water, not white frost) on the freezer floor; water under the crisper drawers days after you wipe it; water running out under the bottom door seal.

DIY difficulty: Advanced (rear freezer panel off).

Call a pro if: the fridge is in year 1, or you'd need to test heaters and thermostats.

2. Water behind the fridge, or the dispenser drips with the filter checked

Likely causes: a leaking water inlet valve, a cracked filter housing, a split supply line, or a leaking saddle valve.

Signs: water at the back bottom; drips continue with the dispenser idle; the filter is seated, not cracked, and less than 6 months old.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (rear access panel off; water off).

3. Water around the ice maker or ice bin

Likely causes: ice jammed in the chute, an unsecured water line, an unlevel fridge or bin, a misaligned fill cup, or a leaking ice maker fill.

DIY difficulty: Easy for the chute and leveling; moderate for the ice maker.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Ice makerMakes and ejects iceModerate

4. Frost or sweating at a door, then water at the front

Likely causes: doors not aligned or not closing because the fridge is unlevel, or a torn door gasket.

DIY difficulty: Easy (level, clean gaskets); moderate (replace a gasket).

Prevent the next leak

What Maytag's warranty covers on a refrigerator

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (checked 2026-10-30), for major appliances made after 2017:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and laborMaytag
Years 2–10Compressor (refrigerators): limited parts coverageYou (labor not included after year 1)

What this means for a leak: a defective inlet valve, filter housing, drain part, or defrost heater is covered with labor in year 1. After year 1, those parts are out of pocket; only the compressor part is on Maytag's 10-year list for refrigerators. A leak from a loose supply fitting, a piercing-type saddle valve, a filter that wasn't seated, or a pinched line is an installation or maintenance issue, not a product defect, and water filters are consumables. Water damage to floors isn't something the appliance warranty pays for. See your model's own warranty sheet for exclusions, and keep your proof of purchase. Maytag's Product Help pages also offer savings of up to 25% on new-appliance extended service plans bought within 30 days of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Is it a leak? Wipe it up, empty the drip tray, re-seat the filter, tighten fittings, level it, and watch for 48 hours.
  2. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; compressor part to year 10 (made after 2017); retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech will clear the drain or only replace parts.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Maytag and Whirlpool-family part numbers (W-, WP-, legacy Maytag numbers, and everydrop filters) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Samsung, Kenmore-labeled, and other-brand parts in the same results were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not Maytag-specific quotes (Fixr's brand table has no Maytag row). "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ water-line kit, + cabinet work if it won't fit the same opening)
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace. Count food loss and floor damage from a leak that keeps returning.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Maytag side-by-side leaves a puddle below the dispenser. The drip tray was full and crushed-ice shavings were melting in the chute. Emptying the tray and dispensing a few cubes after crushed ice fixed it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Maytag French-door fridge leaks behind. A tech finds a weeping inlet valve and replaces it with a new supply line: R = $250; N = $2,000; no other repairs.
250 ÷ 2,000 = 13%; life used 6 ÷ 15 = 40%; repeat check 13% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 16-year-old Maytag top-freezer gets water under the crisper drawers, cools poorly, and the tech finds a sealed-system problem on top of a frozen drain: R = $1,100; N = $1,000. It had a $200 defrost repair last year.
1,100 ÷ 1,000 = 110%; life used 16 ÷ 15 = 107%; repeat check (1,100 + 200) ÷ 1,000 = 130% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system problem outside coverage, repeated ice-maker and drain failures, rust or cracked liners, or a fridge past about 15 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fitting, a filter, a drip tray, a drain tube, a valve, or a heater; the fridge is in year 1; or the part is the compressor inside Maytag's 10-year parts coverage.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude water damage, water lines, filters, and ice makers, and a fridge that's already leaking is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Maytag refrigerator leaking water?
Maytag's articles start with the water supply: a cracked line, tubing not fully inserted, a loose fitting, or a leaking saddle or shutoff valve. Then check the filter is seated and not cracked, the drip tray isn't full, and the fridge is level.

Why is my Maytag fridge leaking from the bottom?
On side-by-side models, Maytag points to the supply line and fittings, and to a cracked or poorly seated water filter. A full dispenser drip tray can also spill down the front.

Why is my Maytag water dispenser dripping?
A few drops after you let go of the lever are normal; hold the glass 2 to 3 seconds. Also empty the drip tray, dispense 8 to 10 cubes after crushed ice, and check the water connections.

Why is my Maytag water filter leaking?
Maytag says a filter that isn't seated after a change, a cracked filter, or missing O-rings can leak. Replace it every 6 months or when the light comes on. If you can't replace it right away, many models can run in bypass with the filter out.

Why is my Maytag ice maker leaking?
Maytag lists a clogged ice chute, an unlevel fridge or ice bin, an unsecured water line, and a misaligned fill cup. Clear the chute with a plastic or wooden handle, level the fridge and bin, and line up the fill cup.

Why is there water under the crisper drawers in my Maytag fridge?
Usually defrost water that can't get down the drain. Maytag's own pages don't cover this; Whirlpool Corporation, Maytag's parent, says the drain is usually at the bottom-back of the freezer and recommends a professional clear a blocked drain.

Does Maytag's warranty cover a leaking refrigerator?
Defective parts are covered with labor in year 1. After that, only the compressor part is covered (to year 10, models made after 2017). Installation problems and filters aren't defects.

How much does it cost to fix a Maytag refrigerator leak?
Often nothing. Fixr puts leak repairs at $60 to $250 depending on whether the water is inside or underneath. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool-family drain tubes were listed at about $9 to $24 and inlet valves at about $46 to $278.
