Quick answer

First, stop the water. Whirlpool says turn the washer off, unplug it, and shut the water valves on the wall before you troubleshoot.

Then match where the water is, cheapest checks first (Whirlpool Product Help):

  1. Behind or underneath: make sure both ends of both inlet hoses have hose washers and every connection is tight (not cross-threaded, not over-tightened). Check that the hot and cold hoses are on the right ports; reversed hoses can leak or sweat, and top-load HE models show HC.
  2. Household drain backing up: the standpipe or sink must carry away at least 17 gallons (64 L) per minute. A slow or clogged drain overflows and looks like a washer leak. The drain hose should be secure but not sealed in the standpipe.
  3. Front of a front-load: clean the door glass and door seal (bellow), pull out any sock or item stuck in the seal, and keep the seal's drainage holes clear. Clean a clogged dispenser drawer and close it fully.
  4. Suds: use HE detergent only, in the recommended amount; "no splash"/"easy pour" bleach can foam. Excess suds can leak from the rear vent of a front-load. Sud/Sd on the display means too many suds.
  5. Top-load splashing: level the washer, don't wash oversized or water-resistant items as a single load, and never add more than 1 or 2 small items after the cycle starts on the highest water level.
  6. Cracked hoses: replace them. Whirlpool says replace fill hoses every five years.

If those don't fix it, Whirlpool's leak guide points to an internal part: the drain pump, a cracked or loose internal drain hose, the tub seal, a torn door seal, or an inlet valve (water dripping into the tub while the washer is off).

Repair or replace? Hoses and cleaning are free or cheap; a door boot, pump, or inlet valve is a moderate repair. A tub seal or bearing leak on an older washer is usually where replacing wins. See the calculator below.

Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)

Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:

Always unplug the washer and close both water valves before you disconnect hoses or remove a panel. Keep towels and a shallow pan ready: hoses and the front-load drain filter hold water.

Which Whirlpool washer do you have?

The model and serial number are on a label on the washer; where it sits varies by style, so check your Use & Care Guide. You need the number to order the right door boot, pump, valve, or hose.

TypeModel prefix (examples)Where leaks usually showNotes
Front-loadUsually WFW (check label)Front (door seal, dispenser drawer), underneath, rear vent (suds)Door boot with drainage holes; drain pump filter behind a front access panel on many models
Top-load (HE and agitator)Usually WTW (check label)Front or top (splashing), behind (hoses), underneathHE top-loads show HC, Sud, drn, LF/Lo FL/F8 E1
Stacked laundry centerVaries (check label)UnderneathSame hose and water-level checks as a top-load

Model prefixes are examples, not a full list. Whirlpool part numbers usually start with W, WP, or WPW. Always order by your exact model number.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Watch it happen. Dry the floor completely, put dry paper towels under the edges, and run a short Rinse & Spin. Note when the leak starts: filling (hoses, inlet valve, dispenser), washing (door seal, suds, splashing), or draining (drain hose, pump, household drain).
  2. Hoses at both ends. Whirlpool: both ends of each inlet hose need a hose washer; connections tight but not cross-threaded and not over-tightened. Look for cracks, bulges, and corrosion.
  3. Hot and cold on the right ports. Reversed hoses can cause leaking or condensation; top-load HE models flag it with HC at the end of the cycle.
  4. Drain hose and standpipe. The hose should be secure in the standpipe but not sealed (no tape). The household drain must carry 17 gal (64 L) per minute; if the standpipe or laundry sink backs up, the leak is in the house drain.
  5. Front-load door seal. Wipe dirt, lint, and pet hair off the seal and glass with a damp cloth; pull back the seal and remove anything lodged inside; check the drainage holes after each use.
  6. Dispenser drawer (front-load). Pull it out, rinse dried detergent, and push it fully closed. Single-dose pods go in the drum, never in the drawer.
  7. Detergent. HE only, and no more than the label says; switch away from "no splash" or "easy pour" chlorine bleach.
  8. Level. An unlevel washer can splash (top-load) or leak at the door seal (front-load).

How to know it's fixed: run a full Normal cycle with a typical load on dry paper towels. No damp spots under or behind the washer, no suds at the door, and no Sud/Sd or HC message at the end.

Whirlpool washer codes linked to leaks

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer (breaker off first if the floor is wet). Close both water valves. Towels and a shallow pan ready.

1. Leaking from the front of a front-load (door area)

Likely causes: a dirty door seal or glass, an item stuck in the seal, blocked seal drainage holes, an overloaded drum with clothes caught in the seal, an unlevel washer, or too many suds. If the seal is torn, Whirlpool says it needs replacing. A faulty door latch or switch can also let the door open during a cycle.

Signs: drips below the door; water on the seal's lower fold; suds on the glass after the cycle.

DIY difficulty: Easy to clean; Advanced to replace the door boot (front panel and clamp rings).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door boot (bellow seal)Seals the door glass to the tubAdvanced

2. Leaking at the front-load dispenser drawer

Likely causes: a clogged dispenser drawer, a drawer not fully closed, or a pod placed in the drawer. F8 E2 on select models.

DIY difficulty: Easy. Pull the drawer out, rinse dried detergent from the drawer and its cavity, and close it fully.

3. Leaking from behind

Likely causes: loose inlet hoses or missing hose washers, cracked hoses, hot and cold hoses reversed (leaking or condensation), a loose drain hose, or a household drain backing up.

Signs: wet wall or valves; drips at the hose ends; water at the standpipe.

DIY difficulty: Easy to Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Fill (inlet) hosesBring hot and cold water to the washerEasy
Drain hoseCarries water to the standpipe or sinkModerate

4. Water dripping into the tub while the washer is off

Likely cause: the water inlet valve. Whirlpool's leak guide says dripping into the washer while it's off points to the inlet valve; check the valve at the back of the machine.

DIY difficulty: Advanced (rear or top panel, hose clamps, wiring connector).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Water inlet valveOpens and closes hot and cold water flowAdvanced

5. Puddle underneath, mostly during drain

Likely causes: a clogged drain pump filter on a front-load (Whirlpool: can leak during the drain cycle), a damaged drain pump, or a cracked or loose internal drain hose near the pump. On top-loads and stacked units, adding clothes after the cycle starts on the highest water level can overflow the inner tub onto the floor.

Signs: water appears near the end of the cycle; drips from below the front panel.

DIY difficulty: Moderate to clean the filter; Advanced to replace a pump or internal hose.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pumpDrains the tub (some models have separate circulation and drain pumps)Advanced
Internal drain / tub-to-pump hoseCarries water from the tub to the pumpAdvanced

6. Puddle underneath during wash, with noise or rust streaks

Likely cause: a faulty tub seal (Whirlpool names it as a bottom-leak source). The seal sits next to the tub bearings, and HomeGuide prices an outer tub and bearings job together, so ask the technician to check the bearings at the same visit.

DIY difficulty: Pro only. Ask for a quote that covers the seal and bearings together.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a washer

Per Whirlpool's US warranty overview (checked 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from delivery)Factory-specified parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanshipWhirlpool
Some models, longerSome Whirlpool laundry warranties add parts-only coverage on specific components after year 1; check your model's warranty sheetYou

What this means for a leaking washer: a torn door boot, failed inlet valve, pump, or tub seal from a defect is covered in year 1. Loose hoses, reversed hoses, suds from the wrong detergent, a backed-up house drain, and installation problems aren't defects. Keep your proof of purchase. Whirlpool's Product Help pages also offer savings of up to 25% on new-appliance extended service plans bought within 30 days of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor from delivery; retailer or credit-card extended protection; any extended service plan you bought.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: hose washers and connections, hot/cold ports, house drain, HE detergent, door seal and dispenser, level. A service visit for a loose hose isn't a warranty repair.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask the tech to show where the water comes from.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside HomeGuide's 8โ€“13-year average range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Whirlpool top-load leaks from behind. One hose washer is missing; adding it stops the leak. R = $6.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Whirlpool front-load leaks from the door; the boot is torn. A tech replaces it: R = $330; N = $1,100; no other repairs.
330 รท 1,100 = 30%; life used 6 รท 10 = 60%; repeat check 30% โ†’ Repair (top-right box: usually fine).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Whirlpool front-load leaks underneath and roars on spin; a tech quotes the tub seal and bearings at R = $700. Last year it needed a drain pump for $300. N = $1,100.
700 รท 1,100 = 64%; life used 10 รท 10 = 100%; repeat check (700 + 300) รท 1,100 = 91% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a tub seal or bearing leak on a washer 8+ years old, a second big repair within about 2 years, or floor damage that keeps recurring.
Tips toward repairing: it's hoses, a door boot, an inlet valve, or a pump; the washer is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go.

4. DIY with the right part. Hoses and hose washers are easy DIY; a door boot or pump is a bigger job. Order by your exact model number.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude hoses, water damage to floors, and installation problems. A washer that's already leaking is usually not covered. Whirlpool sells extended service plans for new appliances.

FAQ

Why is my Whirlpool washer leaking from the bottom?
Check the inlet hose connections and washers first, then the household drain (it must carry 17 gallons per minute). Whirlpool's leak guide also names the drain pump, a cracked or loose drain pipe near the pump, and the tub seal.

Why is my Whirlpool front-load washer leaking from the door?
Usually a dirty door seal or glass, something stuck in the seal, blocked drainage holes, overloading, an unlevel washer, or too many suds. A torn seal needs replacing.

What does Sud or Sd mean on a Whirlpool washer?
Too many suds. The washer extends the rinse to clear them. Use HE detergent, less of it, and avoid "no splash" bleach.

What does HC mean on a Whirlpool washer?
The hot and cold inlet hoses are reversed. Turn off the water, swap them, and run another cycle.

Can too much detergent make a washer leak?
Yes. Whirlpool says non-HE detergent or too much detergent causes excess suds that can leak, including from the rear vent of a front-load.

How often should I replace washer hoses?
Whirlpool's Product Help says every five years; its leak guide says consider every three to five years.

Why is water dripping into my Whirlpool washer when it's off?
Whirlpool's leak guide points to the water inlet valve.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking Whirlpool washer?
Often nothing: hose washers, connections, detergent, or cleaning. Fixr puts a typical leak repair at $75 to $200. OEM Whirlpool door boots were about $88 to $223 and drain pumps about $28 to $205 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30.
