Quick answer

If you smell gas, stop here. LG's manual says: open windows, don't try to light any appliance, don't touch any electrical switch, don't use any phone in your building, and call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. If you can't reach them, call the fire department.

Gas burner won't light: LG's checks, cheapest first

  1. Push the knob in and turn it to Lite. LG says the clicking you hear is the spark igniting the burner, and that's normal. On a new hookup, LG's manual says the burner should light within about 4 seconds once air is purged from the line. Turn the knob out of Lite once it lights.
  2. Seat the burner head and cap. LG lists a burner cap or head that's tilted or not fully seated as a top cause. The hole in the burner head goes over the electrode, the head sits level, and the cap's front and back must be installed correctly. LG's manual adds that burners won't light if the cap is removed.
  3. Clean and dry it. LG says moisture or debris on the cap, head, spark plug (electrode), or heat-sensing rod can stop ignition. Brush it off with a cleaning brush or toothbrush. If a burner hole is clogged, LG says poke it 5 to 10 times with a small needle, gently.
  4. No burner lights at all? Check that the gas valve to the range is on. If it's on and nothing lights, LG says turn the valve on and off 3 to 4 times and try again. Also check whether a gas circuit breaker (a shutoff some homes have) has cut the gas. LG doesn't service that device.
  5. Clicks but the oven and display are dead too? On a gas range the igniters need power. LG specifies a 120 V, 15 to 20 A dedicated circuit with no extension cord. Check the breaker.
  6. Yellow flames? LG's manual says yellow flames: call for service. Yellow tips are normal on LP gas, and high humidity (a rainy day, a nearby humidifier) can tint flames yellow.

Electric element won't heat:

  1. All elements cold? LG says confirm the range is fully connected to power, turn the breaker off for 30 seconds, turn it back on, then try an element on high.
  2. Dual or triple element? LG says push in and turn the knob clockwise to the Dual or Triple position to use the larger ring.
  3. Touch controls not responding? LG says Lock (Child Lock) stops the elements from heating. Unlock it, then press Element Size before Select.
  4. One element still cold? LG says that needs service. The usual parts are the radiant element or its control switch.

Power outage? LG's gas range manual says you can light a surface burner with a match: hold the lit match to the burner, then push in and turn the knob to Lo. Don't try to light the oven burners without power.

Repair or replace? Most dead burners are a crooked cap, a wet or dirty electrode, a clogged port, or a closed valve. A burner head or switch is a modest repair. A radiant element is pricier, and LG's warranty on many electric models covers the radiant surface unit (parts) for up to 5 years. See the calculator below.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Knob. Push in, turn to Lite, and wait for the click and flame. Turn out of Lite once it lights.
  2. Cap and head. Compare with a working burner. LG: the hole in the burner head goes over the electrode, the head sits level, and each cap and head goes in its correct location by size (small, medium, large, extra large, and the oval center burner on models that have one).
  3. Clean. LG's manual: wash caps in hot soapy water, soak burner heads 20 to 30 minutes in mild detergent and hot water for burnt-on food, and use a toothbrush for stubborn stains. No steel wool or scouring powders. Don't hit the electrodes with anything hard. LG's help article also describes soaking a cap in a very dilute 1:100 bleach solution; some LG manuals say not to use bleach on the appliance, so follow the manual for your model.
  4. Clogged ports. LG says poke a clogged burner hole 5 to 10 times with a small needle, without forcing it.
  5. Dry. Shake out the water and let parts dry thoroughly before you reassemble. On the oval burner, LG says set it upside down so water drains.
  6. Gas. Valve on? If every burner sparks but none lights, cycle the valve 3 to 4 times. LG's manual notes the range's pressure regulator valve should be in the open position after installation.
  7. Power. Gas range: 120 V grounded outlet, 15 or 20 A dedicated circuit, no extension cord or adapter. LG's manual says a GFCI isn't required for a gas range outlet, and occasional GFCI trips can cut power. Electric range: check the breaker.
  8. Electric knobs and controls. Dual/Triple position, Lock off, Element Size before Select.

How to know it's fixed: each burner lights within a few clicks, the clicking stops once you turn off Lite, the flame is blue (yellow tips only on LP) and even around the burner, and electric elements heat on every setting.

Clues from LG US Support help-library pages "LG Range - Why Won't My Burner Light", "LG Range - Troubleshooting a Burner Not Igniting After Cleaning", "LG Range – Troubleshooting Noises During Operation", "LG Range - How to Clean the Burner Caps", "LG Range – Why is My Electric Cooktop Not Heating?", and "LG Range - Troubleshooting Buttons Not Working Properly", plus an LG US gas range owner's manual (sources 1–7), checked 2026-10-30. The symptomβ†’part table is our own mapping from those pages and the LG part catalog. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 15) has no LG range-burner entries, so we didn't use it here.

Diagnose by symptom β†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn the knobs off, let the cooktop cool, and turn off power at the breaker before you remove knobs or trim. LG says don't lift the cooktop. Leave gas valves, orifices, and gas connections to a pro.

1. One gas burner won't light (others work)

Likely causes: a cap or head that's tilted or not seated, a clogged burner hole, or moisture or debris on the electrode or heat-sensing rod. If it never sparks, the electrode or its wire. LG says request service once you've ruled out the simple causes.

DIY difficulty: Easy (clean and reseat) to Advanced (electrode).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Burner cap and headSpreads the flame; the head's hole fits over the electrodeEasy
Igniter and orifice holder / electrodeMakes the spark and holds the gas orificeAdvanced to Pro only

2. Clicking that won't stop

Likely causes: a knob left on Lite, moisture after a boil-over or cleaning (LG says moisture around the burner and electrode stops ignition, and parts must dry thoroughly), or a failed igniter switch at that knob. A spark module can also misfire.

What to do: turn every knob fully off, let the cooktop dry completely, and try again. If it clicks with all knobs off and doesn't stop once dry, request service. (The "nonstop clicking = wet or failed switch" link is our general mapping; LG's pages describe clicking at Lite as normal and don't list this case separately.)

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Igniter switch and harnessTells the spark module to fire when a knob is on LiteAdvanced
Spark moduleSends the spark to every electrodePro only

3. Sparks but no flame, weak flame, or yellow flame

Likely causes: gas valve closed or gas shut off (every burner), clogged ports (one burner), or a combustion or orifice problem (yellow flames on natural gas). LG's manual says LP conversion and air-shutter adjustment must be done by a qualified technician. A failed burner valve is less common.

DIY difficulty: Pro only for gas supply, orifices, and valves.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Surface burner valveMeters gas to one burnerPro only

4. Electric element won't heat, or only heats on high

Likely causes: a failed radiant surface element under the glass, or its control switch behind the knob. If several elements quit at once, a wiring or terminal-block connection or a control board is more likely; that's a technician job. A switch stuck on high is a burn hazard; stop using that element.

DIY difficulty: Advanced. Power off at the breaker first.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Radiant surface element (single, dual, triple)Heats under the glassAdvanced
Surface element control switchCycles the element to match the knobAdvanced

Burner clean, dry, seated, and still dead? A technician can test the electrode, switch, module, or element in one visit, and gas work should be done by a pro anyway.

What LG's warranty covers on a range

Per LG's US gas range limited warranty (on lg.com for current models) and LG's US electric range warranty sheet (both read 2026-10-30; terms vary by model, so check the sheet that came with yours):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from purchase)Parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanship (gas range sheet: internal / functional parts), with in-home serviceLG
Up to 5 years (electric models listed on the electric sheet)A glass cooktop that cracks from thermal shock at the rubber seal, and a radiant surface unit that burns out β€” parts onlyYou (years 2–5)

What this means for a dead burner: on a gas range, an electrode, igniter switch, spark module, or valve is covered in year 1. On an eligible electric range, a burned-out radiant element is a covered part for up to 5 years, though you pay labor after year 1. LG's warranties exclude service calls to correct installation, instruct you on use, replace house fuses or correct house wiring, and non-household use, so a closed valve, a wrong orifice, or a tripped breaker isn't covered. Keep your proof of purchase; LG's number is 1-800-243-0000.

β†’ LG US: request a repair Β· LG US support

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Is it broken? Reseat and dry the burner, check Lite, valve, and power; for electric, breaker reset, knob position, and Lock.
  2. Warranty: year 1, the 5-year radiant-element parts coverage on eligible electric models, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and how the tech tested the electrode, switch, or element.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "lg range …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; other brands' parts in those searches, and oven (bake/broil) igniters, are excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? β†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? β†’ N = unit + delivery + installation (gas hookup or new cord) + haul-away
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? β†’ Age and Life (use about 13 years, inside Fixr's 10–15-year range for ovens, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? β†’ Past

Step A β€” Cost ratio: R Γ· N
Step B β€” Life used: Age Γ· Life
Step C β€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) Γ· N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newβœ… RepairπŸ€” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of newπŸ€” Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. If the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG gas range's right-front burner won't light after a deep clean, and there's a faint gas smell. The cap went back on crooked. The owner turns the knob off, airs the kitchen, and reseats the cap and head like the other burners. R = $0.
β†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old LG gas range keeps clicking at one knob even with everything off and dry. A tech replaces the igniter switch: R = $190; N = $1,200; no other repairs.
190 Γ· 1,200 = 16%; life used 7 Γ· 13 = 54%; repeat check 16% β†’ Repair (life used is just over half, but the repair is cheap).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old LG electric range's 9-inch radiant element is dead. Under LG's 5-year radiant-unit coverage the part is covered; the owner pays labor and the trip: R = $180. N = $1,000.
180 Γ· 1,000 = 18%; life used 4 Γ· 13 = 31% β†’ Repair.

Tips toward replacing: a cracked glass top out of coverage, a second big repair within about 2 years, or an older range that also has oven problems.
Tips toward repairing: it's a cap, head, switch, or electrode; the oven works fine; or the part is still in LG's coverage.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new range's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the range, the lower the line should go.

FAQ

Why won't one burner on my LG gas range light?
Usually the cap or head is tilted or not seated, a burner hole is clogged, or there's moisture or debris on the electrode or sensing rod. Reseat the head with its hole over the electrode, brush it clean, clear the port with a small needle, let it dry, and try again on Lite. If it still won't light while the others do, LG says request service.

Why does my LG stove click?
LG says clicking at Lite is normal, and all igniters spark when any burner is lit. If it clicks with every knob off, let the cooktop dry completely; if it doesn't stop, the igniter switch may need service.

Why do I smell gas after cleaning my LG burners?
LG says that happens when the cap and head are put back incorrectly. Turn the knob off, ventilate, and reassemble the burner so it matches the others, with the cap's front and back the right way round. If you smell gas with every knob off, leave and call your gas supplier.

Can I light an LG gas burner during a power outage?
Yes. LG's manual says hold a lit match to the burner, then push in and turn the knob to Lo. The oven can't be used without power.

Why is my LG electric burner not heating?
For all elements, LG says turn the breaker off for 30 seconds and back on. For a dual or triple element, push in and turn the knob clockwise to the Dual or Triple position. On touch models, make sure Lock is off and press Element Size before Select. If one element stays cold, request service.

How much does it cost to fix an LG burner?
Often nothing. LG burner heads were about $43 to $261 and caps about $14 to $150 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Fixr puts gas stove igniter replacement at $150 to $400.
