LG Dishwasher Not Cleaning? Filter, Spray Arm and Loading Fixes, Codes, Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
When an LG dishwasher stops cleaning, it is usually not broken. LG's own troubleshooting points to the same short list again and again: clogged filters, blocked spray-arm holes, dishes loaded so they block the spray, the wrong detergent, or water that is too cool or too low in pressure. All of those are free or nearly free to fix.
LG's checks, cheapest first:
- Clean the filters. LG says to clean them after each load for the best results, and at least once a month if you have hard water. A clogged or badly seated filter lowers wash performance.
- Clean the spray arms. LG dishwashers have up to three (lower, upper, and top). Clear the nozzle holes with a toothpick, flush them, and check each arm spins freely.
- Reload. Plates upright, bowls and curved items facing down, nothing touching or blocking a spray arm, and soak burnt-on pots before washing.
- Use a high-performance detergent in the right amount. LG notes plain liquid detergents can underperform; too much detergent with soft water leaves a cloudy film.
- Check water temperature and pressure. LG's manual lists water that's too cool and inlet pressure outside 20โ120 psi as causes of food left on dishes.
- Pick the right cycle for the soil level.
If those don't fix it, the parts that actually fail are the wash (circulation) motor, the diverter ("Vario") motor that switches water between spray arms, the heater, or the water inlet valve. LG flags those with codes such as LE, nE, HE, and IE.
Repair or replace? Filters, spray arms, and loading are free or cheap. A wash motor on a newer LG may still be under LG's 10-year Direct Drive motor parts warranty. A board or motor on a 10-year-old unit is where replacement starts to win. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Food bits, grit, or film on dishes, no error code, and the filters or spray-arm holes are dirty | Maintenance, loading, or detergent | โ Free fix. Clean filters and spray arms, reload, change detergent |
| Dishes still dirty after cleaning everything, one rack is always worse, or you see nE, HE, LE, or IE | Diverter (Vario) motor, heater, wash motor, or water supply | ๐ง Usually worth repairing. Check LG's motor and board warranty terms first |
| Dishwasher is 10+ years old and needs a wash motor or control board, or it's the second big repair in about 2 years | Wear on several systems | โป๏ธ Lean toward replacing. Run the numbers in the calculator first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Water is on the floor or near the outlet or wiring box under the sink. Switch off the dishwasher's circuit breaker before you touch anything (LG's AE / E1 code means a leak was detected).
- You smell burning, see smoke or melted plastic, or the breaker trips. Leave it off at the breaker and call a technician.
- You just ran a hot cycle. The water, the filter, and the heater area can be hot. Let it cool before you reach in.
- The dishwasher is still under warranty (year 1, or year 2 on some LG models). Use LG's warranty service before you open any panels (see the warranty section below).
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners. Watch for broken glass in the filter area.
Fix order at a glance (cheapest first)

Which LG dishwasher do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label on the side edge of the inner door or the tub opening (open the door and look along the edge). You need it to order the right filter or spray arm and to check warranty status.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Spray arms | What matters for cleaning | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuadWash front-control | Often LDF / LDFN / LDFC (check label) | 3 (top, upper, lower); lower arm has extra rotating arms on QuadWash | Filters, all three arms, the diverter (Vario) that switches between them | LG's spec sheets list a hidden heater, soil (turbidity) sensor, and Machine Clean cycle on many of these |
| QuadWash / TrueSteam top-control | Often LDT / LDTS / LDTH / LDP (check label) | 3 | Same as above; TrueSteam adds a steam option on some | Same filter design on most |
| Older LG models | Older LDS / LDF numbers | 2โ3 | Filter and spray arms | Check your owner's manual for the filter design |
Model prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual (search your model on LG's support site) has the exact filter and spray-arm layout.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
LG's own troubleshooting for food soil left on dishes, plus what each step means:
- Look at the dishes, not just "dirty." Food bits usually mean the filter or spray arms. A white or cloudy film usually means detergent or water hardness (see "Cloudy glasses" below). Gray or black marks usually mean aluminum items rubbing other dishes (LG's manual says to reposition them). Yellow or brown film inside the tub usually means coffee or tea stains; LG suggests a stain-removal product.
- Check the cycle. LG's manual lists the wrong cycle for the soil level as a cause. A quick or eco cycle won't remove baked-on food.
- Check the water temperature. LG lists water that's too cool as a cause and says to check the water supply connection or the water heater setting. Before you start, run the kitchen hot tap until it's hot so the dishwasher fills with hot water from the first fill.
- Check the water supply. LG says inlet pressure should be between 20 and 120 psi. Make sure the valve under the sink is fully open and the inlet hose isn't kinked or crushed.
- Check you used detergent and that the detergent door opened. LG lists no detergent as a cause, and dishes or utensils can block the dispenser door from opening.
- Spin each spray arm by hand. LG's manual says that when the spray arms don't rotate smoothly, the holes are blocked by food particles. If something in the rack stops an arm, it won't spin at all.
- Look at the filters (next section). This is the single most common fix.
How to clean LG dishwasher filters (10 minutes)
LG's manual describes a multi-part filter system (a mesh filter, an upper filter, and an outer filter on many models) and says to clean the filters after each load for best results, and at least monthly if you have hard water. LG's help page adds that an incorrectly installed filter lowers wash performance, and that a neglected filter can cause odor.
You'll need: gloves, a soft brush, and a towel. Watch for broken glass.
- Turn off the dishwasher and let it cool if it just ran.
- Pull out the lower rack.
- Turn the filter assembly counterclockwise and lift it out.
- Separate the parts as your manual shows (on many models the upper filter lifts out of the outer filter).
- Rinse under running water. LG warns not to scrub with excessive force; a soft brush is enough for the mesh.
- Wipe out the sump area under the filter. Remove any glass, bones, seeds, or labels.
- Reinstall in reverse order and turn the filter clockwise until it locks. A filter that isn't fully seated lets debris recirculate onto dishes.
- Run a normal cycle with a load you can judge.
Deodorizing tip from LG: put about 1 oz of white vinegar in a bowl on the lower rack and run a Standard cycle with no other dishes. Many LG models also have a Machine Clean cycle; your manual explains how to run it.
How to know it's fixed: dishes come out without food bits on the next two or three loads, glasses aren't gritty, and the filter isn't packed with debris after a normal load.
How to clean LG spray arms (10โ15 minutes)
LG's spray-arm maintenance guide covers three arms: lower, upper, and top.
- Lower spray arm: pull it straight up to remove it.
- Upper spray arm: turn the retaining nut counterclockwise and pull the arm down. Don't lose the small pin or nut; the arm won't seat correctly without it (the retainer is a cheap replacement part if you lose it).
- Top spray arm (on models that have one): remove it as your manual shows.
- Clear each nozzle hole with a toothpick or pin. Don't enlarge or scratch the holes.
- Flush each arm with hot water and shake it to get loosened debris out of the inside.
- Reinstall and spin each arm by hand. It should turn freely and not hit any rack, tall pan, or utensil.
How to know it's fixed: each arm spins with a light push, the holes are clear when you hold the arm to the light, and the rack that was dirty now comes out clean.
Loading and detergent: the free fixes LG emphasizes
LG's help page on dishes that aren't getting clean puts loading and detergent right next to the filter:
- Scrape large scraps and soak burnt-on food. LG suggests soaking burnt pots for about an hour before washing.
- Plates stand upright; bowls and curved items face down. Items that face up collect dirty water. Don't nest or overlap dishes.
- Nothing touches or blocks a spray arm. Tall pans, cutting boards, or long utensils that stop an arm will leave a whole rack dirty.
- Nothing blocks the detergent door.
- Use a high-performance detergent. LG says liquid detergent isn't recommended for best results; use quality pods, tablets, or powder.
- Use rinse aid. LG's manual recommends it for spotting and for drying, and for cloudiness with soft water.
- Check what you're washing. LG lists dishware that isn't suitable for a dishwasher (for example some wooden, hand-painted, or non-heat-resistant items). Those won't come out well no matter what.
Cloudy glasses or a white film
LG's manual says cloudiness on glassware usually comes from too much detergent combined with soft water. The fix is less detergent plus rinse aid. A gritty, sandy feel on the other hand usually means the filter is clogged and food particles are being sprayed back on the dishes, so clean the filter first.
LG dishwasher codes that affect cleaning
Most cleaning problems show no code. When there is one, these are the ones that matter. LG's US guide says many of these need a technician; it also says codes and features can differ by model.
| Code | LG's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| IE | Water inlet error: not enough water reached the tub | Check that the house has water, the valve under the sink is open, and the inlet hose isn't kinked; service if it continues |
| OE | Drain (outlet) error: tub not fully drained | Clean the filter (LG suggests every one to two weeks); check the drain hose isn't kinked or clogged |
| FE | Too much water supplied | LG's manual says call service |
| AE / E1 | Leak detected (float switch in the base) | Turn it off; find and fix the leak before using it again |
| HE | Heater circuit failure: water isn't being heated | LG says request service |
| tE | Temperature sensor problem, or very hot inlet water | LG says request service |
| LE | Wash motor not working normally | LG says request service |
| nE | Vario / diverter problem: spray-arm switching isn't working | LG's Spanish support page says check nothing is blocking the arms and the holes are clear, unplug for 60 seconds, and request service if it returns |
| bE | Suds / detergent error | Use dishwasher detergent only; wipe out suds; rerun |
| PF | Power failure during a cycle | Restart the cycle |
| CL | Child lock on (not a fault) | Turn the lock off per your manual |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IE | Water supply; inlet valve | Open the valve; straighten the hose | Inlet valve | Easy โ Advanced |
| OE | Filter; drain hose; drain pump | Clean the filter; check the hose | Drain pump | Easy โ Advanced |
| nE | Diverter (Vario) motor; spray arms | Clear the arms; power off 60 s | Diverter motor or switch | Advanced |
| HE / tE | Heater; thermistor | Breaker reset | Heater or sensor | Pro only |
| LE | Wash (circulation) motor | Breaker reset | Wash motor (check the 10-year motor parts warranty) | Pro only |
| bE | Detergent | Correct detergent; rerun | โ | Easy |
| AE / E1 | Leak; float switch | Dry the base; find the leak | Leaking part | Advanced |
Code meanings from LG's US error-code guide and owner's manual (sources 1 and 4) and, for nE, LG Spain's code index (source 6), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 10). Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom โ likely part
Before you touch parts: Turn off the breaker for the dishwasher and close the hot-water valve under the sink. Many dishwashers are hard-wired; if you're not comfortable with that, call a pro.
1. Grit or food bits on everything, filter was packed
Likely causes: a clogged or cracked filter that lets food recirculate, or a filter that wasn't locked in.
Signs: sandy residue on glasses; food bits on the top rack; odor.
DIY difficulty: Easy.
Call a pro if: the filter area keeps filling with water (that's a drain problem, see OE).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Filter assembly (mesh / upper / outer) | Traps food so it isn't sprayed back | Easy |
| Filter retainer | Holds the filter in place | Easy |
2. One rack is always dirty, the other is fine
Likely causes: a blocked or cracked spray arm, a missing upper spray-arm nut or pin, the spray-arm manifold (the tube feeding the upper arm) not seating, or a diverter (Vario) motor that isn't switching water between arms (nE).
Signs: the arm doesn't spin by hand; dishes block it; an arm wobbles or sits crooked.
DIY difficulty: Easy for arms and nuts; advanced for the diverter motor (it's under the tub on most models).
Call a pro if: the arms and holes are clean, the arm spins, and one rack still stays dirty, or nE returns.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Spray arm (lower / upper / top) | Sprays water onto the dishes | Easy |
| Spray-arm retainer / nut | Holds the upper arm on | Easy |
| Spray-arm manifold | Feeds water to the upper arm | Moderate |
| Diverter (Vario) motor and switch | Switches water between spray arms | Advanced |
3. Weak spray, quiet wash, or LE
Likely causes: a failing wash (circulation) motor / pump, or a clogged pump inlet.
Signs: you don't hear the usual water sounds; dishes look "rinsed, not washed"; LE appears.
DIY difficulty: Pro only while LG's warranty might apply; otherwise advanced (the dishwasher usually comes out).
Call a pro if: you see LE or the wash is weak with clean filters. Ask about LG's 10-year Direct Drive motor parts warranty first; you'd still pay labor after year 1 (or year 2).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Wash / circulation pump and motor | Pumps water to the spray arms | Advanced |
4. Greasy film, dishes cold at the end, HE or tE
Likely causes: a failed heater, a thermistor fault, or the house water arriving too cool.
Signs: dishes and tub feel cool after the cycle; grease isn't cut; HE or tE shows.
DIY difficulty: Pro only. LG says HE and tE need a technician.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Heater (often part of the sump assembly on LG) | Heats the wash water | Pro only |
| Thermistor | Reads water temperature | Advanced |
5. Low water, short fills, or IE
Likely causes: the valve under the sink partly closed, a kinked inlet hose, low house pressure, or a failing water inlet valve.
Signs: little water in the tub during the wash; IE.
DIY difficulty: Easy for the valve and hose; advanced for the inlet valve.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water inlet valve | Lets water into the tub | Advanced |
Not sure if it's the diverter, the wash motor, or the heater? A technician can check all three in one visit and save you from ordering the wrong part.

Keep it cleaning
- Clean the filters often: after each load for best results, and at least monthly with hard water (LG).
- Check the spray arms every month or two and whenever one rack comes out worse.
- Scrape, don't pre-rinse heavily, and soak burnt-on pans.
- Load to keep the arms free, with curved items facing down.
- Use a quality detergent and rinse aid, and adjust the dose for your water.
- Run the hot tap first and pick a heavier cycle for heavy soil.

What LG's warranty covers on a dishwasher
LG's US dishwasher warranty cards (they vary by model; your card or LG's site has yours):
| Period (from original retail purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (some models 2 years) | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Up to 5 years | Main control board and racks (parts only) | You |
| Up to 10 years | Direct Drive motor (parts only) | You |
| Limited lifetime | Stainless steel tub and door liner (parts only) | You |
What this means for a cleaning problem: a failed wash motor, heater, diverter, or board in year 1 (or year 2 on 2-year models) is a warranty repair. After that, the Direct Drive motor and the control board may still be covered as parts, so you'd only pay labor. But cleaning the filter, clearing spray arms, loading, and detergent choice are maintenance, not defects. Keep your proof of purchase.
โ Check your model's warranty on LG's site ยท Schedule an LG repair
Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 (or 2), plus LG's 5-year board and 10-year Direct Drive motor parts coverage, plus any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Maintenance first: clean the filters and spray arms and run one well-loaded cycle with good detergent before the visit. Many "not cleaning" calls end there.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? โ N = unit + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? โ Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8โ15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ Past
Step A โ Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | โ Repair | ๐ค Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | ๐ค Get a second quote first | โ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old LG dishwasher leaves grit on glasses. The filter is packed and the upper spray arm's holes are clogged. R = $0.
โ Not a repair. Clean, reload, and switch detergent.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old LG dishwasher shows LE. The wash motor is covered as a part under LG's 10-year Direct Drive motor warranty, so you pay only the visit and labor: R = $200; N = $900; no other repairs.
200 รท 900 = 22%; life used 5 รท 11 = 45%; repeat check 22% โ Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG dishwasher needs a heater, and last year it had a control board for $350. R = $300; N = $900.
300 รท 900 = 33%; life used 11 รท 11 = 100%; repeat check (300 + 350) รท 900 = 72% โ Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a motor or board on an older unit outside the parts warranties, a second big repair within about 2 years, rust or a leaking tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, spray arm, diverter, or inlet valve; the dishwasher is in year 1 or 2; or the motor or board is still covered as a part.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. DIY with the right part. Filters, spray arms, and retainers are DIY-friendly. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the filters, spray arms, and water temperature first?
- Is it the diverter, the wash motor, or the heater? How did you test it?
- Is the part covered under LG's 5-year board or 10-year motor parts warranty?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude maintenance issues such as clogged filters. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my LG dishwasher not cleaning dishes?
Most often it's clogged filters, blocked spray-arm holes, dishes loaded so they block the spray, or the wrong detergent. LG's manual also lists water that's too cool, low inlet pressure, and the wrong cycle.
How often should I clean my LG dishwasher filter?
LG says after each load for the best results, and at least once a month with hard water. Turn it counterclockwise to remove it and clockwise to lock it back in.
Why is there grit or sand on my dishes?
Usually a clogged or unseated filter, so food particles are sprayed back on the dishes. Clean and reseat the filter.
Why are my glasses cloudy after an LG dishwasher cycle?
LG's manual says cloudiness usually comes from too much detergent with soft water. Use less detergent and add rinse aid.
Why is only the top rack dirty?
A blocked upper or top spray arm, a missing upper-arm nut, or a diverter (Vario) problem. Clean the arms first; nE points to the diverter.
What does nE mean on an LG dishwasher?
A problem with the Vario (diverter) system that switches water between spray arms. Make sure nothing blocks the arms, clean the holes, unplug for about a minute, and request service if it returns.
Is liquid detergent bad for LG dishwashers?
LG says liquid detergent isn't recommended for best cleaning results and suggests a high-performance detergent.
Does LG's warranty cover a dishwasher that isn't cleaning?
A failed part in year 1 (or 2 on some models) is covered for parts and labor, and LG covers the Direct Drive motor (up to 10 years) and control board (up to 5 years) as parts only. Filter cleaning and loading are maintenance.
Is it worth fixing an LG dishwasher that doesn't clean?
Usually yes: most fixes are free, and a diverter or inlet valve is a modest part. A motor or board on an older dishwasher outside the parts warranty often isn't. Use the calculator above.
