GE Range Oven Not Heating? Bake Element, Igniter, Breaker, Door Latch and Sabbath Mode Fixes, F-Codes, Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
If the burners work but the oven doesn't, start with GE's free checks:
- Settings. Make sure Bake or Broil is selected, a temperature is set, and Start was pressed. On knob models, check the knobs went back in the right spots after cleaning.
- Reset the control. GE says switch the breaker off for one minute, then on, even if the clock and light work.
- Self-clean latch. On ranges with a mechanical latch, slide it all the way left (unlocked).
- Sabbath mode. If your model has it, Sabbath mode changes how the oven behaves; GE lists it as a reason the oven seems not to work.
- Power and gas supply. Check the breaker or fuses and that the cord is fully plugged in (on most free-standing and slide-in ranges you reach it by pulling out the storage drawer). On gas ranges, check the gas shutoff valve; on a new install, GE says the range's gas regulator may have been bumped to OFF, which leaves the burners working but the oven dead.
Then the part check:
- Electric: with power off, look at the bake (lower) element. GE says if it's cracked or broken, replace it. Hidden-bake models (element under the oven floor) need a technician.
- Gas: set Bake, open the door, and look for a red/orange glow at the bottom rear. GE says no glow points at the Glo-Bar igniter, the control, or other electrical parts. A glow with no flame, or very slow lighting, points at the igniter or the oven gas (safety) valve; GE says that needs service.
An F-code on the display? GE's manual says press Cancel/Off, let the oven cool for an hour, and retry; if it repeats, cut power for at least 30 seconds; if it still repeats, call for service.
Repair or replace? A bake element or igniter is usually worth fixing. A control board on an older range is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Oven cold, and Start wasn't pressed, the latch was locked, Sabbath mode was on, a breaker had tripped, or the gas regulator was off after install | Settings, power, or supply | โ Free fix. Reset, unlock, reselect |
| Electric: bake element visibly cracked; gas: no igniter glow or glow with no flame | Bake element, Glo-Bar igniter | ๐ง Usually worth repairing. Moderate parts |
| F-code keeps returning (F5, F8, FF control; F0/F1/F6/F7 keypanel) on a range 10+ years old, or a second big repair in about 2 years | Electronic control, keypanel, or several worn parts | โป๏ธ Lean toward replacing. Run the numbers first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas or rotten eggs. GE says unburned gas has that smell. Don't touch switches. Leave the house and call your gas supplier from outside. (A faint odor for the first few minutes as a gas oven heats up is normal, per GE.)
- You heard a "boom" or the door blew open. GE calls this delayed ignition (a gas oven should light in 2 to 3 seconds). Stop using the oven and call for service.
- You saw sparks or a bright flash from an element. GE says an element can, rarely, short and spark for a few seconds, and may trip the breaker and leave a burning-plastic smell. Don't use the oven until the element is replaced; the surface burners are still OK to use.
- The breaker trips again right after reset, or the cord or outlet is scorched. Leave it off and call an electrician or technician.
- The range is in its first year. GE covers any part with labor for one year. Use GE service first.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
Always switch off the breaker (or remove the fuse) and, for electric ranges, unplug the range before you touch an element. For gas ranges, leave igniters, valves, and the regulator to a pro unless you're trained.

Which GE range do you have?
GE's manual says the model and serial numbers are on a label behind the oven door or the storage drawer. You need them to order the right element, igniter, or sensor.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | How the oven heats | Usual no-heat parts | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric free-standing | JB, JBS (e.g., JB625, JB645, JBS60) | Bake element (lower) and broil element (upper) | Bake element, broil element, oven sensor, control | Some models have a hidden bake element: technician only |
| Gas free-standing / slide-in | JGB, JGS (e.g., JGS968) | Bake burner and broil burner, each lit by a Glo-Bar igniter | Igniter, oven gas (safety) valve, sensor, control | Needs electric power for igniters and controls |
| Profile / Cafรฉ / induction / dual-fuel | Varies (check label) | Varies | See your Owner's Manual | Order parts by exact model |
Model prefixes are examples taken from GE Owner's Manuals, not a full list. Your manual (search the model on GE Appliances' site) lists the oven controls, Sabbath steps, and the temperature adjustment for your exact range.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Check the settings. Electronic controls: choose Bake, set a temperature, press Start. Knob models: make sure the oven function and temperature knobs are set and weren't swapped after cleaning.
- Reset the control. Switch the range breaker off for one minute, then on. GE says do this even if the clock or light is working.
- Unlock the door latch. On self-clean ranges with a mechanical latch, slide it all the way to the left. If the oven is still hot after self-clean, wait; the door stays locked until it cools.
- Turn off Sabbath mode. GE's manuals list Sabbath mode as a reason the oven "does not work or appears not to work" and the display goes blank. Your manual's Special Features section shows how to exit.
- Check power and gas. Breakers on, fuses good, cord fully seated (pull out the storage drawer to see it, with the breaker off). Gas ranges: gas shutoff valve open. New gas install and burners work but oven doesn't? GE says the regulator may have sprung to OFF during installation; the lever isn't always visible, so service may be needed to reset it.
- Look for heat. Electric: with power off and the range unplugged, inspect the bake element for cracks, breaks, or blisters. Gas: set Bake, open the door, and look for the red glow at the bottom rear of the oven. GE says an orange glow is normal and the igniter cycles on and off to hold temperature.
- Clear an F-code. GE's JB645 manual: press Cancel/Off, let the oven cool for one hour, put it back into operation. If the code repeats, disconnect all power for at least 30 seconds. If it still repeats, call for service.
How to know it's fixed: the oven preheats to 350ยฐF in a normal time, the element glows (electric) or the burner lights within 2โ3 seconds of the igniter glowing (gas), food bakes as expected, and no F-code returns.
Heats, but runs hot or cold? GE's manual has a do-it-yourself oven temperature adjustment: up to 35ยฐF hotter or cooler, affecting Bake only. Try it before buying a sensor.
GE oven codes linked to "not heating"
GE lists these on its "Range & Wall Oven - Oven Error, Fault or Function Codes" support page. GE says a trained service technician should be called when the control shows a fault code. Codes vary by model.
| Code | GE's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| F2 or F20 | Oven temperature exceeded a preset threshold | Cancel/Off, cool 1 hour, retry; service if it repeats |
| F3 / F4 | Usually means the oven sensor needs replacing | Power reset; service or sensor replacement |
| F5 / F8 / FF | Usually means the electronic control needs replacing | Power reset; service |
| F0 / F1 / F6 / F7 | Usually a keypanel problem; often needs replacing | Power reset; service |
| F9 / FC | A component failed in the door lock circuit | Service |
| F350 | Upper cooling fan circuit issue or obstruction | Service |
| FD | Probe or probe receptacle | Unplug the probe; service if it repeats |
| Bad Line | Power applied but the range is miswired | Electrician or installer |
| LOC | Control lockout is on | Unlock per your manual |
| OFF | Oven still too hot after self-clean | Wait for it to cool |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F2 / F20 | Sensor or control | Cool 1 hour; power off 30 s+ | Service | Pro only |
| F3 / F4 | Oven temperature sensor | Power reset | Sensor | Moderate |
| F5 / F8 / FF | Electronic control | Power reset | Control | Pro only |
| F0 / F1 / F6 / F7 | Keypanel (membrane switch) | Power reset | Keypanel | Advanced |
| F9 / FC | Door lock motor / switch | Power reset | Lock assembly | Pro only |
| Bad Line | House wiring at the range | โ | Electrician | Pro only |
Code meanings from GE Appliances' US support page "Range & Wall Oven - Oven Error, Fault or Function Codes" (source 9) and the F-code steps in GE's JB625/JB645/JBS60 Owner's Manual (source 10), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 15) maps Samsung and LG codes to components, ranked fixes, and DIY difficulty; it has no GE range entries, so we used GE's own pages for every code here. GE says it can't list every code for past and present models; your Owner's Manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom โ likely part
Before you touch parts: Switch off the breaker (or remove the fuse). For electric ranges, unplug the range. For gas ranges, close the gas shutoff before any work beyond looking. Let the oven cool completely.
1. Electric: burners work, oven stays cold or barely warm
Likely causes: a failed bake element. GE says an element usually fails "open," so it simply stops heating. Less often the oven sensor or control is at fault.
Signs: a crack, break, or blister on the lower element; the element doesn't glow when Bake is on; the broil element still works on Broil.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (exposed element: a couple of screws and a wire connection; GE has a replacement video). Hidden bake / True Hidden Bake: Pro only (GE says a service technician is required).
Call a pro if: the element looks fine and tests good, or it's a hidden-bake model.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Bake (lower) element | Main heat for baking | Moderate (exposed) / Pro only (hidden) |
| Broil (upper) element | Top heat for broiling | Moderate |
2. Electric: element sparked, then the oven stopped
Likely cause: the element shorted against its sheath. GE says this is rare: sparks for a few seconds, the breaker may trip, there may be a burning-plastic smell, and the element stops working.
What to do: don't use the oven until the element is replaced. GE says no danger remains once the sparking stops, and the surface burners can still be used. Reset the breaker only after the oven is off.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (same as an element swap); check the wire terminals for burn damage.
3. Gas: burners work, no glow in the oven
Likely causes: the Glo-Bar igniter, the oven control, or other electrical parts (GE's list). On a new install, the gas regulator set to OFF (burners still work).
Signs: no red/orange glow at the bottom rear after setting Bake; the clock works.
DIY difficulty: Pro only (gas).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Glo-Bar oven igniter | Heats up and lets the gas valve open | Pro only |
| Oven control | Powers the igniter on Bake | Pro only |
4. Gas: igniter glows, but no flame (or late ignition)
Likely causes: the Glo-Bar igniter or the oven gas (safety) valve. GE explains that when the igniter switches off, the safety valve closes and the flame goes out, so the two work as a pair. GE also says the igniter stays on as long as the flame burns and the oven should light in 2โ3 seconds; a boom means delayed ignition and needs service.
Signs: orange glow for a long time with no flame; slow or "whoomp" lighting; oven won't get above a low temperature.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Glo-Bar igniter | Lights the gas and holds the valve open | Pro only |
| Oven gas (safety) valve | Lets gas reach the burner once the igniter is hot | Pro only |
5. Heats, but too hot, too cold, or F3 / F4
Likely causes: the oven temperature sensor (F3/F4), or an oven that just cooks differently from your old one.
Signs: F3 or F4 code; temperature swings; recipes over- or under-baking at the same setting.
DIY difficulty: Easy (temperature adjustment); Moderate (sensor replacement; check your model's parts diagram).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Oven temperature sensor | Tells the control the oven temperature | Moderate |
6. Nothing works: no display, no heat; or F5 / F8 / FF
Likely causes: power (breaker, fuse, cord), Sabbath mode with a blank display, or a failed electronic control.
What to do: check power and Sabbath first. If the control is getting power and the display stays dead or shows a control code after a reset, call for service.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic oven control / board | Runs bake, broil, and timers | Pro only |
Not sure if it's the element, the igniter, or the control? A technician can test the heat circuit in one visit and work safely on gas parts.

Prevent it next time
- Don't clean the bake or broil element. GE's manual says not to clean them; lift an exposed bake element gently to wipe the floor under it.
- Wipe up heavy spills before self-clean, and remove racks and pans as your manual directs.
- Use the temperature adjustment instead of replacing a sensor that's only a little off.
- Follow your manual's foil and oven-liner rules; GE's manual has a section on them. On gas ranges, call for service if lighting gets slow.
- After a power outage, reset the clock and any cooking function, as the manual describes.

What GE's warranty covers on a range
Per the "GE Appliances Electric Range Limited Warranty" in GE's US Owner's Manual for JB625 / JB645 / JBS60 (read 2026-10-30):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| One year from the date of original purchase | Any part of the range that fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship | GE Appliances (all labor and in-home service to replace the defective part) |
| After year 1 | Not covered by the standard limited warranty | You |
What this means for an oven that won't heat: a failed bake element, igniter, sensor, or control in year 1 is covered. GE won't cover service trips to teach you how to use the product, improper installation, delivery, or maintenance, resetting circuit breakers or replacing house fuses, or damage after delivery. If you live where GE Authorized Service isn't available, GE says you may pay a trip charge. Keep your proof of purchase. GE Appliances service: 800.GE.CARES (800.432.2737). GE's gas-range manual we checked (JGS968) uses the same one-year, any-part terms; check the warranty page in your own manual.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 covers any part with labor; check retailer or credit-card extended protection too.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: Start pressed, 1-minute breaker reset, latch unlocked, Sabbath off, cord and gas supply checked, F-code cool-down. Many "no heat" calls end there.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask which test pointed at the part (element continuity, igniter amperage, sensor resistance).

How we price this table: DIY part prices are GE (WB-prefix) part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for ovens in general, not GE-specific quotes. Neither guide has a GE brand row for ovens. "Varies โ get a quote" means we found no GE listing or no guide figure, so we don't show a number.

Tip: an exposed bake element is one of the cheapest oven fixes to do yourself; GE publishes a replacement video. Hidden-bake models cost more because the oven floor has to come out.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? โ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ a new cord or gas connector)
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? โ Age and Life (use about 13 years, inside Fixr's 10โ15-year and HomeGuide's 10โ20-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ Past
Step A โ Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | โ Repair | ๐ค Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | ๐ค Get a second quote first | โ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old GE electric range won't bake. The self-clean latch was left partly locked; sliding it fully left fixes it. R = $0.
โ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 9-year-old GE electric range has a visibly broken bake element. The owner replaces it: R = $70; N = $1,000; no other repairs.
70 รท 1,000 = 7%; life used 9 รท 13 = 69%; repeat check 7% โ Repair (top-right box: usually fine).
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 15-year-old GE gas range shows F5 after resets; a tech quotes R = $450 for a new control, and last year it needed an igniter for $250. N = $1,000.
450 รท 1,000 = 45%; life used 15 รท 13 = over 100%; repeat check (450 + 250) รท 1,000 = 70% โ Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a control board on a range over 15 years old (Fixr's line), a second big repair within about 2 years, discontinued parts, or a cracked cooktop on top of an oven fault.
Tips toward repairing: it's a bake element, igniter, or sensor; the range is under about 10 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and HomeGuide uses it for ovens: repair when the cost is under half the price of a new oven. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60%, so treat a repair that costs 50โ60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the range, the lower the line should go.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty, or any gas repair).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them electric or gas, the code (if any), whether the burners work, and what you saw at the element or igniter; it speeds up the diagnosis.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. Your gas supplier or an electrician. For a gas smell, a regulator or supply problem, or a "Bad Line" wiring code.
4. DIY with the right part. Exposed bake and broil elements and many oven sensors are owner-replaceable. Leave gas parts and controls to a pro. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check Sabbath mode, the latch, and a breaker reset first?
- Which part failed, and how did you test it?
- On a gas range, how did you decide between the igniter and the valve?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans limit coverage on cosmetic parts, glass cooktops, or self-clean damage. A range that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my GE oven not heating but the burners work?
GE's list: Bake or Broil not set or Start not pressed, knobs in the wrong place, the self-clean latch locked, Sabbath mode, or a tripped breaker. Electric: a cracked or broken bake element. Gas: no igniter glow, or (on new installs) the gas regulator set to OFF.
How do I reset my GE oven?
GE says switch the breaker off for one minute and back on, even if the clock and light work.
How do I know if my GE bake element is bad?
With the power off and the range unplugged, look at the lower element. GE says if it's cracked or broken, replace it. A technician can also test it for continuity.
Is the orange glow in my GE gas oven normal?
Yes. GE says the Glo-Bar igniters glow orange and cycle on and off to hold the temperature. No glow at all points at the igniter, control, or wiring.
What does F3 mean on a GE oven?
GE says F3 (and F4) usually means the oven sensor needs to be replaced.
What does F2 mean on a GE oven?
The oven temperature exceeded a preset threshold. Cancel, let it cool for an hour, and call for service if it repeats.
Can I adjust my GE oven if it runs hot or cold?
Yes. GE's manual describes a DIY adjustment of up to 35ยฐF hotter or cooler that affects Bake only.
My GE oven has a hidden bake element. Can I replace it myself?
GE says replacing a Hidden Bake or True Hidden Bake element requires a service technician.
How much does it cost to fix a GE oven that won't heat?
GE bake elements were about $41 to $196 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30, and GE oven igniters about $51 to $83. Cost guides put an element repair at about $100 to $450 and an igniter replacement at about $150 to $350 installed.
