Quick answer

First, check the display for an "F" code (F followed by a number). LG says each code has its own fix; F9 means the oven isn't heating properly.

LG's checks, in order:

  1. Press START. LG says any temperature change is canceled if you don't press START within 25 seconds.
  2. Oven Lockout / Child Lock / Delay Start. If the display says OVEN LOCKOUT or CHILD LOCK, hold START or LOCK for 3 seconds. DELAY START means the oven is waiting on purpose.
  3. Power: a dedicated circuit, breaker on, no extension cord. Electric ranges need 120/208V or 120/240V, 40–50 amp; gas ranges need 120V, 15–20 amp.
  4. Gas ranges: make sure the home gas shutoff and the pressure regulator on the range are open (they're often closed after the range is moved). Then try a cooktop burner: if it lights fine but the oven won't, LG points to the control or igniter and recommends service.
  5. Igniter (gas): LG says the hot-surface igniter glows red for about 30–60 seconds before the bake burner lights; the glow reflects inside the cavity. No glow, or glow but no flame, points at the igniter.
  6. Reset: turn the breaker off for 30 seconds (LG's US code guide); LG Canada's F-9 guide suggests 3–5 minutes.

Still cold? The usual parts are a burned-out bake element (electric), a weak igniter (gas), the oven temperature sensor, the gas valve, or the control / relay board.

Repair or replace? Most LG oven heating repairs are worth fixing. See the calculator below.

Which LG range do you have?

Your model and serial label is usually visible with the oven door or storage/warming drawer open (your owner's manual shows the exact spot). You need it to order the right element, igniter, or board.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Error code? Note it, then use the code table below.
  2. Settings confirmed? Choose Bake, set the temperature, and press START within 25 seconds — LG cancels unconfirmed changes.
  3. Lockout, Delay Start, Sabbath. OVEN LOCKOUT / CHILD LOCK: hold START or LOCK for 3 seconds. DELAY START on the display means it's waiting. 5B is Sabbath mode; your manual shows how to exit (on many models: Bake, set a temperature, Start, then hold Clock for 3 seconds).
  4. Breaker. Make sure it's on and the range is on its own circuit. If the breaker is too small for the range, LG says it may trip. Reset it: off 30 seconds, then on.
  5. No extension cord. LG says the range must plug straight into the outlet.
  6. Door closed. LG says the oven isn't designed for open-door cooking; opening it delays or restarts the cycle as heat escapes (on gas models the bake burner stays on).
  7. Gas supply (gas ranges). If the range was recently pulled out, the gas may have been shut off at the home shutoff valve or at the pressure regulator on the range (location varies by model — see your manual).
  8. Cooktop burner test (gas). If a surface burner lights normally but the oven won't heat, LG says the issue is likely the control panel and the range needs service.
  9. Watch for the igniter (gas). Set Bake and look through the window or the broiler opening: LG says the igniter glows red for about 30–60 seconds, then the burner lights.
  10. Elements (electric, oven off and cool). Look for a break, blister, or bright spot on the broil element (top) and on any visible bake element (bottom).

How to know it's fixed: the oven preheats to your set temperature with no F-code, the gas burner lights within about a minute of the igniter glowing (gas), and a trusted recipe cooks in its normal time.

LG range codes linked to "not heating"

LG's US range code list says most codes clear by pressing Power ON/OFF (or CLEAR/OFF); if a code comes back, switch the breaker off for 30 seconds, then on; if it still returns, request service.

CodeMeaningWhat to do
F9Oven not heating properly. LG Canada's support explains it as the oven failing to reach 150°F after 5 minutes of preheat; causes include a shorted element, a defective relay board or connector, or an electrical faultClear/Off; breaker off (30 s per LG US; 3–5 minutes per LG Canada); gas models: check the main and oven gas shutoff valves; if it returns, service
F6Upper oven heating errorClear/Off and retry; breaker reset; service if it returns

Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Switch off the range's breaker (and close the gas shutoff on gas ranges). Let the oven cool completely.

1. Electric: no bake heat (F9 or F6), broil works

Likely cause: a burned-out bake element, or a failed relay on the control board that feeds it.

Signs: a visible break on an exposed element; one element heats, the other doesn't.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (exposed element); Advanced if hidden under the floor.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Bake elementBottom heat for bakingModerate–Advanced
Broil elementTop heat for broilingModerate

2. Gas: cooktop works, oven igniter glows but no flame (or no glow)

Likely cause: a weak igniter that glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve, or a failed gas valve. HomeGuide lists igniter failure, the gas-oven safety valve, the oven sensor, a blown thermal fuse, gas-line connections, and wiring as reasons a stove works but its oven doesn't.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; pro recommended because it's next to the gas valve.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Oven (bake) igniterHot-surface igniter that lights the bake burnerAdvanced
Oven gas valveOpens when the igniter is hot enoughPro only

3. F1, F2, F4, or F16; oven overheats or never reaches temperature

Likely cause: the oven temperature sensor (thermistor) or its connector.

DIY difficulty: Moderate on many models (back of the cavity, a couple of screws and a plug).

4. Nothing heats; display works; codes return after reset

Likely causes: the main control or relay board, wiring, or the house supply (F42).

DIY difficulty: Pro only for most owners.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

What LG's warranty covers on a range

Per LG's US electric oven limited warranty sheet (read 2026-10-30; terms vary by model, so check the sheet that came with yours):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from purchase)Any part that fails from a defect in materials or workmanship, plus labor and in-home serviceLG
Up to 5 years (electric models listed on the sheet)A replacement glass cooktop that cracks from thermal shock at the rubber seal, and a radiant surface unit that burns out — parts onlyYou (years 2–5)

What this means for a cold oven: bake and broil elements, igniters, sensors, and boards are covered in year 1. LG's warranty excludes service calls to correct installation, replace house fuses or correct house wiring, and non-household use — so a voltage or gas-supply problem isn't covered. Keep your proof of purchase.

→ LG US: request a repair · LG US support

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Is it broken? Rule out START, lockout, Delay Start, Sabbath, breaker, voltage, and gas supply.
  2. Warranty: year 1 from purchase, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part the tech tested to reach the diagnosis.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ gas connector or new cord)
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 13 years, between Fixr's 10–15 and HomeGuide's 10–20-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG gas range won't heat after the kitchen floor was redone. The regulator on the range was left closed. Opening it fixes the oven. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old LG electric range shows F9 after a reset; the hidden bake element has failed. A tech replaces it: R = $320; N = $1,300; no other repairs.
320 ÷ 1,300 = 25%; life used 7 ÷ 13 = 54%; repeat check 25% → Repair (well under 50% of new).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old LG double-oven range: F9 in the upper oven plus a touch-pad fault. The tech quotes a board and touch pad: R = $700; N = $1,400. It had a $300 igniter last year.
700 ÷ 1,400 = 50%; life used 13 ÷ 13 = 100%; repeat check (700 + 300) ÷ 1,400 = 71% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: burn damage, several boards at once, rusted cavity, or a range past about 13 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's an element, igniter, sensor, or a closed gas regulator; the range is in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use (HomeGuide also suggests repairing when the fix costs less than 50% of a new oven). Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new range's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the range, the lower the line should go.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover range repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Many plans cap payouts or exclude glass cooktops and pre-existing problems; read the terms before you buy.

FAQ

Why is my LG oven not heating?
LG's checks: look for an F-code, confirm settings with START within 25 seconds, clear Oven Lockout or Delay Start, make sure the range is on its own powered circuit with no extension cord, and on gas models check the gas shutoff, regulator, and igniter. If it still won't heat, the element, igniter, sensor, or board likely needs service.

What does F9 mean on an LG oven?
The oven isn't heating properly. LG Canada's support says it means the oven didn't reach 150°F within 5 minutes of preheating. Clear it, reset the breaker, and call for service if it returns.

Why does my LG gas cooktop work but the oven doesn't?
LG says that usually points to the control panel and needs service. The igniter, gas valve, and sensor are also common causes; watch whether the igniter glows for 30–60 seconds.

How long does the LG oven igniter glow before lighting?
LG says the hot-surface igniter glows red for about 30 to 60 seconds, then lights the bake burner.

What power does an LG range need?
LG lists 120/208V or 120/240V, 60Hz, 40–50 amp dedicated circuits for freestanding electric ranges, and 120V, 60Hz, 15–20 amp dedicated circuits for freestanding gas ranges. No extension cords.

How much does it cost to fix an LG oven that won't heat?
Fixr puts most oven repairs at $150 to $400. LG bake elements were listed at about $75 to $232 and gas igniters at about $240 to $369 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30.

Should I replace an LG range that won't heat?
Rarely for a single element, igniter, or sensor. Consider replacing if the board and other parts fail together on an older range.
