Quick answer

If you smell gas, stop here. Turn the knob to OFF, get everyone out, and call your gas supplier from outside or a neighbor's phone, as Samsung's manual says. Don't touch switches.

Gas burner won't light: Samsung's checks, cheapest first

  1. Push the knob in, then turn it to Lite. You should hear clicking, which Samsung says means the ignition system is working. Leave it on Lite until the burner lights, then turn it to your flame level.
  2. Seat the burner head and cap. Samsung's manual lists a cap that isn't in place or a misaligned burner base as causes. The head's electrode opening must line up with the electrode, the head must sit flat, and the cap should spin but not slide or wiggle. Caps and heads aren't interchangeable.
  3. Clean it. Wash caps and heads in hot soapy water, clear clogged ports with a sewing needle or twist tie, and clean the electrode. Let everything dry fully. Don't let water reach the burner base or the brass orifice.
  4. None of the burners light? Check that the range is plugged in, and check the fuse or breaker. If they spark but don't light, the gas supply may be off or not connected properly. Samsung says to have your gas company or installer check it.
  5. Clicking that won't stop? All burners click when any knob is on Lite; that's normal. Clicking with no knob on Lite usually means moisture on the ignition switches behind the knobs. Samsung says heat the cooktop or oven, or unplug it and let it dry a couple of hours or overnight.
  6. Big yellow flames? Samsung's manual points to the wrong orifice (LP versus natural gas). Call your installer.

Electric element won't heat:

  1. Check the knob. On dual and triple elements, a knob put back on the wrong stem after cleaning makes the heat seem wrong, Samsung says.
  2. Check the cookware and voltage. Use flat pans that match the element size. Samsung recommends 240 V; on 208 V the range works but heats more slowly.
  3. One element cold, the rest fine? Samsung says that needs service. The usual parts are the radiant element or its control switch.

Power outage? Samsung says you can light a gas burner with a long gas grill lighter: hold it at the burner, push the knob in, turn it to Lite, then light it.

Repair or replace? Most dead burners are a cap, a wet igniter, or a breaker. An igniter or switch is a modest repair. A radiant element is pricier but still usually worth it on a range under about 10 years old. See the calculator below.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Knob. Push in, turn to Lite, and wait for the click and flame.
  2. Cap and head. Lift the cap and head off a working burner and compare. Line up the electrode opening with the electrode, set the head flat, then the right cap on top. It should spin but not slide.
  3. Clean. Hot soapy water for caps and heads, a plastic scouring pad for burned-on food, and a sewing needle or twist tie for clogged ports. Wipe the base with a damp cloth. Dry everything completely. Samsung: never spray cleaner into the manifold holes, because the ignition system is there.
  4. Electrode. Wipe the electrode clean and dry. Samsung's manual lists cleaning the electrodes as a fix for burners that don't light.
  5. Power. Is the range plugged in? Check the breaker or fuse. On a gas range, the igniters need power.
  6. Gas. If every burner sparks but none light, the gas supply may be off or not connected properly.
  7. Moisture. After a boil-over or a wet cleaning, let it dry. If it clicks with all knobs off, Samsung says heat the cooktop or oven, or unplug overnight.
  8. Electric knobs and pans. Put each knob back on its own stem. Use flat pans that match the element. Covered pots help on 208 V.

How to know it's fixed: each burner lights within a few clicks, the clicking stops once you turn off Lite, the flame is blue and even all the way around, and electric elements heat on every setting.

Clues from Samsung US Support pages "How to use your Samsung gas range or cooktop", "Samsung cooktop and range: common sounds and operational noises", "How to clean your Samsung gas cooktop", "One burner on the Samsung cooktop does not work", and "Samsung electric and induction cooktop temperature issues", plus the troubleshooting table in a Samsung US gas cooktop user manual (sources 1–6), checked 2026-10-30. The symptomβ†’part table is our own mapping from those pages and the Samsung part catalog. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 13) has no Samsung range-burner entries, so we didn't use it here.

Diagnose by symptom β†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn the knobs off, let the cooktop cool, and turn off power at the breaker before you lift the cooktop or remove knobs and trim. Leave gas valves, orifices, and gas connections to a pro.

1. One gas burner won't light (others work)

Likely causes: a cap or head that's off-center, clogged ports, or a dirty or wet electrode. If it never sparks, the igniter or its wire. Samsung's support page for a single burner that doesn't work says to request service once you've ruled out the simple causes.

DIY difficulty: Easy (clean and reseat) to Advanced (igniter).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Burner cap and headSpreads the flame; the head has the electrode openingEasy
Surface burner igniter (electrode)Makes the sparkAdvanced

2. Clicking that won't stop

Likely causes: moisture on the ignition switches (Samsung's first explanation), or a failed igniter switch at that knob. A spark module can also misfire.

What to do: heat the cooktop or oven, or unplug the range and let it dry a couple of hours or overnight. If it still clicks, Samsung says request service.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Igniter switchTells the spark module to fire when the knob is on LiteAdvanced
Spark moduleSends the spark to every igniterPro only

3. Sparks but no flame, weak flame, or yellow flame

Likely causes: gas supply off or not connected properly (every burner), clogged ports (one burner), or the wrong orifice for your gas (yellow flames). A failed burner valve is less common.

DIY difficulty: Pro only for gas supply, orifices, and valves.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Surface burner valveMeters gas to one burnerPro only

4. Electric element won't heat, or only heats on high

Likely causes: a failed radiant surface element under the glass, or its control switch (the "infinite switch" behind the knob). A switch stuck on high is a burn hazard; stop using that element.

DIY difficulty: Advanced. Power off at the breaker first.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Radiant surface element (single, dual, triple)Heats under the glassAdvanced

What Samsung's warranty covers on a range or cooktop

Per the Samsung gas range / cooktop limited warranty (U.S.A.) printed in Samsung's user manual, and Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page (both read 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from delivery)Parts and labor for manufacturing defects; in-home service by a Samsung authorized servicer within the contiguous US, subject to availabilitySamsung
Limited-timeFree 2-year extended warranty on eligible ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, and hoods bought during Samsung's 2026 offer (ends 12/31/2026); claim requiredCheck your terms

What this means for a dead burner: in year 1, a failed igniter, switch, spark module, valve, or element is covered. Samsung doesn't cover in-home instruction on using the product, service to correct installation not in line with electrical or plumbing codes, household wiring or fuses, damage from incorrect voltage, or glass-cooktop damage from the wrong cleaners or hardened sugary spills or melted plastic. A wrong orifice is an installation issue. Keep your proof of purchase; Samsung's number is 1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864).

β†’ Samsung US: home-appliance warranty Β· Request service

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Is it broken? Reseat and dry the burner, check Lite, power, and gas; for electric, knobs and pans.
  2. Warranty: year 1, Samsung's 2026 extended offer, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and how the tech tested the igniter, switch, or element.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Samsung OEM part numbers (DG…) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "samsung range …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; other brands' parts in those searches are excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from US cost guides (Fixr gas stove = G1, Fixr oven = G2, HomeGuide oven = G3): national averages, not Samsung quotes. "Varies β€” get a quote" means the guides don't itemize that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? β†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? β†’ N = unit + delivery + installation (gas hookup or new cord) + haul-away
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? β†’ Age and Life (use about 13 years, inside Fixr's 10–15-year range for ovens, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? β†’ Past

Step A β€” Cost ratio: R Γ· N
Step B β€” Life used: Age Γ· Life
Step C β€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) Γ· N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newβœ… RepairπŸ€” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of newπŸ€” Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. If the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Samsung gas range's left-front burner clicks but won't light after a pot boiled over. The cap is crooked and the ports are clogged. Cleaning, drying overnight, and reseating fix it. R = $0.
β†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Samsung gas range has one burner that never sparks. A tech replaces the igniter: R = $210; N = $1,200; no other repairs.
210 Γ· 1,200 = 18%; life used 6 Γ· 13 = 46%; repeat check 18% β†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Samsung electric range needs a triple radiant element and its switch: R = $560. It needed an oven control board last year for $380. N = $1,000.
560 Γ· 1,000 = 56%; life used 11 Γ· 13 = 85%; repeat check (560 + 380) Γ· 1,000 = 94% β†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a cracked glass top, a second big repair within about 2 years, or an older range that also has oven problems.
Tips toward repairing: it's a cap, head, igniter, or switch; the oven works fine; or it's in year 1 or an eligible extended period.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new range's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the range, the lower the line should go.

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude cosmetic parts, knobs, and glass tops. A range that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why won't one burner on my Samsung gas range light?
Usually the cap or head is out of position, the ports are clogged, or the electrode is dirty or wet. Push the knob in to Lite, reseat the head so the electrode opening lines up, clean and dry it, and try again. If one burner still won't work while the others do, Samsung says request service.

Why does my Samsung stove keep clicking?
All burners click when any knob is on Lite; that's normal. If it clicks with every knob off, Samsung says moisture is on the ignition switches. Heat the cooktop or oven, or unplug it and let it dry a couple of hours or overnight.

Can I light a Samsung gas burner during a power outage?
Yes. Samsung says hold a long gas grill lighter at the burner, push the knob in and turn it to Lite, then light it.

Why are my Samsung burner flames yellow?
Samsung's manual points to the wrong orifice for your gas type (LP versus natural gas). Contact your installer.

Why is my Samsung electric burner not heating right?
Check that each knob is on its own stem, especially on dual and triple elements. Use flat pans that fit. On 208 V the range heats more slowly. If one element stays cold, Samsung says request service.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung burner?
Often nothing. Samsung surface-burner igniters were about $41 to $103 and burner caps about $47 to $121 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Fixr puts gas stove igniter replacement at $150 to $400.
