GE Range Burner Not Working? Gas Won't Light, Constant Clicking, Coil or Glass-Top Element Cold — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
GE says most gas burners that won't light are wet or dirty, have an electrode that isn't seated, or have the wrong cap or head on them. Most electric burners that "don't work" are a loose plug-in coil, a bad coil, a power problem, or normal cycling. GE's own checks, by type:
Gas burner clicks but won't light:
- Dry it. After cleaning or a boil-over, water in the ignition port and flame ports makes the burner click and not light. GE says let caps and heads air dry, or set them in a warm oven for 30 minutes. It can take 10 to 12 clicks to light.
- Clear the ports. Remove the grate, cap, and head and poke the holes with a needle or paper clip.
- Seat the electrode. Wipe the white ceramic electrode tip with a dry paper towel and press it down, twisting clockwise, until it sits flush with the cooktop.
- Match the parts. Each head goes in its own position, and each cap must match its head. A correct cap lies flat.
Gas burner doesn't click at all: check that you turned the right knob to Lite, the plug and breaker, and that the caps are on the right burners. If the oven works but no burner clicks, GE says you need service.
Electric coil won't heat: unplug the range, then move the coil to another receptacle of the same size. If it still won't heat, GE says replace the element. If it heats in the other spot, the receptacle or switch is the problem.
Electric coil or glass top turns on and off: usually normal. GE's Sensi-Temp coils cut out near 450°F pan temperature, and radiant elements cycle about 75% on at High, 50% at Medium, and 25% at Low.
No surface burners work but the oven does? On an electric range, GE says check the cord is plugged in snugly. If the clock works but the top doesn't, the cord may be wired wrong, so call your installer.
Repair or replace? Most dead burners are a free fix or a single cheap part. A cracked glass top, or several failures on an old range, is the main "think about replacing" case.

Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Burner wet after cleaning; cap or head mismatched; electrode raised; knob not fully Off; coil loose; Sensi-Temp or radiant cycling | Cleaning, assembly, normal operation | ✅ Free fix |
| One coil dead in every receptacle; one gas burner never sparks; clicking won't stop after drying; one radiant element dead | Coil element, electrode, receptacle, infinite switch, spark switch | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| No burner clicks with power on; cracked glass top; gas smell; range 15+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Spark module, cooktop glass, gas valve, or general wear | ♻️ Lean toward replacing an old range; get a quote first on a newer one |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas (a rotten-egg smell). GE says a brief gas odor when a burner first lights is normal, but a rotten-egg smell means unburned gas. Turn the knobs off, don't touch switches or plugs, leave the house, and call your gas supplier from outside.
- The cooktop is hot. Let burners, grates, and the glass cool. Coils and radiant elements stay hot after they go dark.
- You're about to clean. GE says disconnect power to the range or cooktop before cleaning and unplug it before any maintenance.
- The glass top is cracked. Don't use it. Turn the element off at the breaker and call for service.
- You'd need to open the cooktop, change a valve, or touch gas lines. That's pro only.
- The range is in year 1. GE's range warranty covers any defective part, with labor, for one year.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Gas, coil, smooth-top, or induction? What each symptom means
| Type | Symptom | GE's most likely causes | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas | Clicks, won't light | Wet or dirty burner; electrode not seated; cap or head in the wrong spot or mismatched | Dry; clean; press electrode flush; match parts |
| Gas | No click on one burner | Wrong knob; knob not at Lite; wrong-size cap on that burner | Match knob and burner; Lite; correct cap |
| Gas | No click on any burner | No power (plug, breaker); if the oven works, the spark system | Restore power; service |
| Gas | Clicks when the knob is Off | Knob not fully Off; moisture after cleaning | Turn fully Off so it pops out; dry a few hours |
| Gas | All burners click when one is lit | Normal: one spark module runs every igniter | Nothing |
| Electric coil | One coil cold | Loose plug-in coil; failed coil; receptacle or switch | Reseat; swap to a same-size receptacle |
| Electric coil | Coil glows, goes dark, glows again | Sensi-Temp limiting pan temperature near 450°F (2018 and newer) | Flat pan that presses the center sensor |
| Smooth-top (radiant) | Element glows red, then dark | Normal cycling: about 75% on at High, 50% Medium, 25% Low | Nothing |
| Smooth-top | Element shuts off early, heats poorly | Warped or rough pan bottom making the built-in heat sensor cycle | Flat, smooth pan no more than 1 inch past the ring |
| Electric (any) | No surface burners work, clock works | Cord wired improperly | Call the installer |
| Electric (any) | No surface burners work, oven bakes and broils | Internal fault | Service |
Find your model and serial number on the label, usually visible when you open the oven door or pull out the storage drawer. You need it for parts and service. GE model prefixes vary; for example, JGB / JGS are often gas ranges and JB / JBS electric ranges. Check your label.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Knob. Gas: push and turn to Lite, and turn to your cooking setting only after you see flame all around the burner (GE). Make sure the knob matches the burner you're watching.
- Dry and clean. After cleaning or a spill, disconnect power, shake out the water, and let caps and heads dry thoroughly, by air or 30 minutes in a warm oven. Clear clogged holes with a needle or paper clip.
- Electrode. With the burners off and cool, lift off the grate, cap, and head. The white ceramic electrode should sit flush. If it's raised, press it down with a clockwise twist (GE). Wipe its tip with a dry paper towel.
- Parts in the right place. GE ranges have burners of different sizes. A medium cap on a small burner won't work properly. The cap lies flat when it's right.
- Power. Check the plug and the breaker or fuse. On most freestanding and slide-in GE ranges, the plug is reached by pulling out the lower storage drawer; you may need to slide the range out.
- Coil swap. Unplug the range. Lift the dead coil, pull it out of its receptacle, and plug it into another receptacle of the same size. Heats there = receptacle or switch. Still dead = the coil.
- Loose coil. GE says plug-in Calrod coils can work loose in their socket and heat only partly. Unplug the coil and reinstall it.
- Pan. Smooth-top and induction burners need a flat, smooth-bottom pan. GE recommends stainless steel or aluminum for radiant tops and says a pan shouldn't extend more than 1 inch past the burner ring. On dual elements (6/9 or 6/9/12 inch), set the knob to the size that matches the pan.
How to know it's fixed: each gas burner lights within about 10 to 12 clicks and the clicking stops once it lights; each coil or radiant element heats on every setting (with normal on/off cycling).
GE's Sensi-Temp coils: why your burner turns itself off and on
GE says that starting in 2018, UL rules require all electric coil-top ranges to have temperature-limiting capability to reduce cooktop grease fires. GE's coil burners now use Sensi-Temp Technology:
- Each burner has a silver medallion with a button (sensor) in the center of the coil. The button must touch the bottom of the pan.
- When the sensor reads a pan temperature near 450°F, the burner shuts off on its own, then resumes heating once the pan cools. It cycles bright red / dark for the rest of the cooking time. GE says this is normal.
- It is not an auto-shutoff. A Sensi-Temp burner keeps heating with no pan on it until you turn the knob Off.
- Sensi-Temp coils fit most 2011 and newer 30-inch freestanding GE or Hotpoint electric ranges and cooktops. On ranges built after the rule change, GE says you can't replace them with coils that lack Sensi-Temp.
GE's tips if it cycles too much (from its Sensi-Temp technical sheet): use a flat, appropriately sized pan heavy enough to press the center medallion; avoid pans whose heavy handle tips the pan off the coil; put a lid on to hold a boil; and remember the right rear coil sits over the oven vent, so move the pan if the oven is on.
GE codes and clues for surface burners
GE's US support articles for surface burners work from symptoms, not error codes. Codes on a GE display usually relate to the oven (see our GE range oven not heating guide).
| Clue | GE's explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| All burners spark when one is turned on | Normal on sealed-burner ranges: one spark module serves all igniters | Nothing |
| Up to 10–12 clicks before lighting | Normal | Wait; then check dryness |
| Clicking with the knob Off | Knob not fully Off, or moisture after cleaning | Turn fully Off; dry a few hours |
| Continuous clicking after cleaning | Water in the ignition or flame ports | Dry fully |
| Coil cycles on and off | Sensi-Temp limit near 450°F | Flat pan touching the sensor |
| Radiant element glows, then dark | Normal cycling; slight hum is normal too | Nothing |
| Light spills from the 6-inch into the 9-inch ring | Normal on 6/9 and 6/9/12 burners (no insulation barrier) | Nothing |
| Glass top slower to boil than coils | Normal per GE | Right pan, right size setting |

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Turn the knobs off, let the cooktop cool, and unplug the range or turn off its breaker before you remove a coil, knob, or trim. Leave gas valves, the spark module, and anything under a glass top to a pro.
1. One gas burner won't light (others work)
Likely causes: water in the ports, clogged holes, a raised electrode, or a cap or head in the wrong spot. If it never sparks while the others do, the electrode or its lead wire.
DIY difficulty: Easy (clean, dry, reseat) to Advanced (electrode).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Burner cap and head | Spreads the flame; sized to its position | Easy |
| Electrode (igniter) | Makes the spark at the burner | Advanced |
2. Clicking that won't stop, or no clicking at all
Likely causes: a knob not fully Off, or moisture (GE says let it dry a few hours). If it keeps clicking once dry, the spark switch behind that knob. If no burner clicks with power confirmed, the spark module; GE says that needs service.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (switch) to Pro only (module).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Spark module | Sends the spark to every electrode | Pro only |
| Spark switch (on the burner valve) | Tells the module a knob is at Lite | Advanced |
3. Sparks but no flame, or a weak, uneven flame
Likely causes: clogged ports, a mismatched cap, or, if the burner is clean and correct, a problem at the surface burner valve or gas supply. GE says schedule service if the spark igniter works but the burner still won't light.
DIY difficulty: Easy (ports, cap) to Pro only (valve).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Surface burner valve | Meters gas to the burner | Pro only |
4. Electric coil won't heat, heats partly, or only heats on high
Likely causes: a loose or failed coil element, a burned receptacle (the socket the coil plugs into), or a failed infinite switch (the knob's control). Use GE's swap test to tell them apart.
DIY difficulty: Easy (coil) to Advanced (receptacle, switch).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Coil (Calrod) surface element | Makes the heat; Sensi-Temp on newer models | Easy |
| Surface element receptacle | Socket the coil plugs into | Advanced |
| Infinite (surface element control) switch | Sets the heat level | Advanced |
5. One smooth-top (radiant) element won't heat
Likely causes: a pan that isn't flat (heat sensors cycle it off), the wrong size setting on a dual element, or a failed radiant element or its switch. A cracked glass top is a separate, bigger repair.
DIY difficulty: Pro only (elements sit under the glass).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Radiant surface element | Heats under the glass | Pro only |
| Surface element control switch | Sets the heat level | Advanced |
No burner clicks, or an element is dead in every test? A technician can check the spark module, switches, and wiring in one visit.

Prevent it next time
- Dry burner parts fully after cleaning: air dry, or 30 minutes in a warm oven (GE).
- Wipe spills before they bake into the ports.
- Put each head and cap back in its own spot.
- Turn knobs fully Off so they pop out.
- Use flat, smooth-bottom pans that fit the burner, and press the Sensi-Temp sensor.
- Don't line drip pans with foil, and keep the drip bowl turned the right way. GE says foil and a misaligned bowl can trap heat, and a wrong bowl can block the oven vent near the rear coil.

What GE's warranty covers on a range
Per the GE Appliances Electric Range Limited Warranty printed in Owner's Manual 49-2000951 (see Sources). Terms vary by model, so check your own manual:
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Any part of the range that fails because of a defect in materials or workmanship | GE (parts, all labor, and in-home service) |
What this means for a dead burner: a failed coil, radiant element, receptacle, switch, electrode, or spark module is covered in year 1. GE excludes improper installation, delivery, or maintenance and the replacement of house fuses or resetting of circuit breakers, so a tripped breaker, a miswired cord (GE sends those to the installer), or a wet burner isn't a warranty repair. GE also says altering or modifying parts, such as swapping Sensi-Temp coils for non-Sensi-Temp coils, isn't something it can recommend. Keep your proof of purchase.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are GE "WB" part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "ge range …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, Kenmore-, Hotpoint-, and other-labeled parts in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from US cost guides (Fixr gas stove = G1, Fixr oven = G2, HomeGuide oven = G3): national averages, not GE quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means the guides don't itemize that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ gas connector or cord)
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 13 years, inside Fixr's 10–15-year and HomeGuide's 10–20-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old GE gas range's front burner clicks but won't light after a pasta boil-over. Drying the cap and head for 30 minutes in a warm oven and pressing the electrode flush fixed it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old GE electric coil range has one dead 8-inch burner. The coil heats in the other 8-inch spot, so a tech replaces a burned receptacle: R = $150; N = $800; no other repairs.
150 ÷ 800 = 19%; life used 6 ÷ 13 = 46%; repeat check 19% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 14-year-old GE smooth-top range has a cracked glass top and a dead radiant element: R = $650; N = $900. It had a $200 oven repair last year.
650 ÷ 900 = 72%; life used 14 ÷ 13 = 108%; repeat check (650 + 200) ÷ 900 = 94% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a cracked glass top on an older range, a gas valve plus a spark module, repeated repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a coil, a cap or head, an electrode, a receptacle, or a switch; the range is under about 8 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use; HomeGuide also says to repair when the cost is under 50% of a new oven. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new range's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

1. GE Appliances (warranty or official service). In year 1, start with GE. GE's support pages route repair scheduling through its service partner Bodewell; you can also call 800.GE.CARES (800.432.2737).
2. Your installer. GE says that if the clock works but no top burner does, the power cord connection may be wired improperly; contact your installer.
3. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them gas or electric, whether it clicks, what the coil swap showed, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
4. Your gas company. For any gas smell.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you test the switch, receptacle, or spark module before quoting it?
- Is the part a Sensi-Temp coil that matches my range?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude cooktop glass, knobs, and cosmetic parts, and a range that's already failing is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why won't my GE gas burner light but it clicks?
GE says it's usually a wet or dirty burner, an electrode that isn't seated, or a cap or head in the wrong position. Dry the parts fully (air dry or 30 minutes in a warm oven), clear the ports with a needle or paper clip, press the electrode flush, and match each cap to its head. It can take 10 to 12 clicks.
Why does my GE burner keep clicking?
Make sure the knob is fully Off and has popped out. Moisture after cleaning can also cause clicking; GE says let it dry for a few hours. All burners clicking when you light one is normal.
Why won't my GE gas burner click at all?
Check you turned the right knob to Lite, the cap is the right size for that burner, and the range has power. If the oven works but no burner clicks, GE says you need service.
Why won't my GE electric coil burner heat?
Unplug the range and move the coil to another receptacle of the same size. If it still won't heat, GE says replace the element; if it heats in the new spot, the receptacle or switch is the problem.
Why does my GE coil burner turn off and on by itself?
Since 2018, GE coil burners use Sensi-Temp. A sensor in the center cuts power when the pan nears 450°F, then resumes. It's normal. A flat pan that presses the sensor cycles less.
Is it normal for my GE glass-top burner to turn on and off?
Yes. GE says radiant elements cycle about 75% on at High, 50% at Medium, and 25% at Low. A pan that isn't flat can make them cycle off early.
How much does it cost to fix a GE range burner?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, GE coil elements were listed at about $55 to $106 and spark modules at about $30 to $188. Fixr puts a gas burner repair at $75 to $250 and an igniter at $150 to $400.
Should I replace my GE range if a burner stops working?
Rarely. Replace if the glass top is cracked on an older range, several parts have failed, or the repair is over half the price of a new range.
