Whirlpool Range Burner Not Working? Gas Burner Won't Light or Keeps Clicking, Coil or Glass-Top Element Won't Heat โ Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most dead Whirlpool burners are a setup or cleaning issue, not a broken part. Whirlpool's own checks, cheapest first:
Gas burner won't light:
- Push the knob in, then turn it counterclockwise to Lite (Ignite) and wait for a flame. All burners click; only the one you turned lights.
- Cap on the right base, centered and flush. The base and the underside of the cap may carry a matching mark. A cap on the wrong base, or tilted, won't light well.
- Clogged ports: clean them with a straight pin, needle, or small-gauge wire. Whirlpool says no wooden toothpick (it can break off), no dishwasher, and don't enlarge the ports.
- Wet after cleaning or a spill? Let it dry. Whirlpool says a hair dryer on cool air, aimed at the burner and the knob shaft, speeds it up.
- None light? Check the breaker or fuse and that the gas valve is ON. After a new install, turn on one burner knob to bleed air from the line. Some models have a Cooktop Lock (touch the lock key 3 seconds).
Electric coil or glass-top element won't heat:
- Breaker or fuse. Then reset: breaker off 1 minute, back on.
- Coil knobs: push in before turning. Whirlpool says the cooktop won't turn on otherwise.
- Coil fully inserted in its receptacle.
- Not as red as before? Since June 2018, coils are temperature-limiting (UL standard): the inner coil cycles on and off. That's normal. Glass-top elements also cycle, even on HI.
- Control Lock off (glass-top models).
Still dead? A gas burner that never sparks points at the spark switch or spark module. One coil that won't heat in any receptacle is the coil; a coil that works elsewhere points at the receptacle or infinite switch.

| No burner clicks with power on; cracked glass top; gas smell; range 15+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Spark module, cooktop glass, gas valve, or general wear | โป๏ธ Lean toward replacing an old range; get a quote first on a newer one |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell gas. Turn the knobs off if you can do it right away, don't touch switches or plugs, leave the house, and call your gas utility from outside.
- The cooktop is hot. Whirlpool says make sure all controls are off and the cooktop is cool before cleaning. Glass tops stay hot after the element cycles off.
- The glass top is cracked. Don't use it. Switch the range off at the breaker and call for service.
- You'd need to adjust a burner, change a valve, or touch gas lines. Whirlpool's quick guide says to contact a trained repair specialist. That's pro only.
- The range is in year 1. Whirlpool's warranty covers parts and labor for defects.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site. In 2019, some Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir glass cooktops with touch controls were recalled because elements could turn on by themselves (details below).
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Whirlpool range do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, often on the oven frame behind the door or behind the storage drawer. You need it for parts and service.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Cooktop | Whirlpool help article that applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas freestanding | Often WFG (check label) | Sealed burners with electronic (spark) ignition | "None of the Burners are Lighting," "Surface Burner(s) Sparking or Clicking" |
| Gas slide-in | Often WEG (check label) | Same | Same |
| Electric freestanding, coil | Often WFC (check label) | Plug-in coil elements | "Coil Element Not Working" |
| Electric, glass top | Often WFE / WEE (check label) | Radiant elements under glass | "Element(s) Not Working - Glass Cooktop" |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your Owner's Manual shows your knob layout, lock key, and cleaning steps.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
Gas:
- Lighting the right way. Whirlpool: push the knob in, turn counterclockwise to Ignite, wait for the flame, then set anywhere between Hi and Lo. Clicking continues between Ignite and Hi.
- Listen. Whirlpool says all burners click, but only the one turned to Lite should light. No click at all? Turn the burner off and check for a tripped breaker or blown fuse.
- Cap and base. Lift the grate. The cap must sit flush on the base with minimal side-to-side movement; the alignment pins must line up. Check the matching marks.
- Ports and gas tube. With all controls off and the cooktop cool: remove the cap and base, wipe the gas tube opening under the base with a damp cloth, and clear clogged ports with a straight pin, needle, or small-gauge wire. Gently wipe the igniter with a damp cloth.
- Dry it. Moisture from cleaning or a boil-over makes burners click and stops ignition. Let it dry, or use a hair dryer on cool.
- Downdraft vent? Whirlpool says a downdraft hood can pull the flame away; lower its speed or raise the flame.
Electric:
- Breaker reset: off for 1 minute, then on.
- Coil: knob pushed in before turning; coil fully inserted.
- Swap test (our tip): move the dead coil to a same-size receptacle that works. If it heats there, the coil is fine and the receptacle or switch is the problem.
- Glass top: check Control Lock; remember elements cycle and the warming zone doesn't glow. If an element stops during use, Whirlpool says remove the pan and let the cooktop cool 30 minutes, then try again.
How to know it's fixed: a gas burner lights within a few clicks and holds an even blue flame; a coil or radiant element heats a pan of water to a boil at High.
Whirlpool's own pages disagree on how far to go with a burner that won't light
Whirlpool's Product Help articles and the Use & Care quick guide printed in Whirlpool's gas range instructions give different limits for DIY. Here they are side by side.
| Whirlpool Product Help ("Burner Not Lighting," "None of the Burners are Lighting," "Cleaning Burners and Burner Ports") | Whirlpool gas range Use & Care quick guide (in installation instructions W11189659) and gas cooktop control guide (W11668752) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning tool | Straight pin, needle, or small-gauge wire; no wooden toothpick; don't enlarge ports | Straight pin for ports; a steel pin for the nozzle (quick guide); no wooden toothpick |
| What to remove | Remove the cap and the burner base, clean the gas tube opening under the base with a damp cloth | Remove the cap; clean the gas tube opening with a damp cloth |
| If it still won't light | Check cap alignment and the matching cap; then contact Whirlpool or schedule service | Check cap alignment; then "do not service the (sealed) burner yourself": contact a trained repair specialist |
| Adjusting a burner | Not covered | Contact a trained repair specialist |
Our take: cleaning ports and reseating caps is fine for most owners. Stop there. If a clean, dry, correctly seated burner still won't light, don't take the burner apart further: it's a service call.
Whirlpool clues for surface burners
Whirlpool's surface-burner articles don't list error codes; they diagnose by what you see and hear.
| Clue | What Whirlpool's articles say | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All burners click, one lights | Normal | โ | โ | โ |
| Clicking with all knobs off | Moisture in the switches from cleaning or a spill | Remove knobs; cool air on the knob shafts; wait | Igniter (spark) switch | Easy โ Pro only |

Diagnose by symptom โ likely part
Before you touch parts: Turn every knob off, let the cooktop cool, and switch off the breaker. On gas ranges, close the gas shutoff before you loosen anything under the cooktop.
1. One gas burner clicks but won't light
Likely cause: a wet, dirty, or misaligned burner (free), then a worn igniter (electrode).
DIY difficulty: Easy (cleaning) โ Advanced (igniter).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Burner cap | Spreads the flame; must sit flush | Easy |
| Burner head / base | Holds the ports | Easy |
| Surface burner igniter | Makes the spark | Advanced |
2. No burner clicks, or clicking won't stop
Likely cause: after ruling out the breaker, moisture, and Cooktop Lock, the spark module (no clicks anywhere) or an igniter switch behind a knob (clicking that won't stop).
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Spark module | Sends the spark to every igniter | Pro only |
| Igniter (spark) switch | Tells the module to spark when the knob is at Lite | Pro only |
3. It sparks, but no gas or a weak flame at one burner
Likely cause: a clogged orifice or a failing surface burner valve. This is gas work: call a pro.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Surface burner valve | Meters gas to one burner | Pro only |
4. Electric coil won't heat
Likely cause: the coil (if it fails in every receptacle), or the receptacle or infinite switch (if it works elsewhere). A parts retailer's guide (non-OEM, below) says to look for burn marks in the receptacle and replace the receptacle and the element if it's burned.
DIY difficulty: Easy (coil) โ Advanced (receptacle, switch).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Coil surface element | Heats the pan | Easy |
| Surface element receptacle | Connects the coil to power | Advanced |
| Surface element (infinite) switch | Sets the heat level | Advanced |
5. One glass-top (radiant) element won't heat
Likely cause: after Control Lock, a breaker reset, and a 30-minute cool-down, the radiant element or its switch.
DIY difficulty: Pro only (the glass top has to come up).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Radiant surface element | Heats under the glass | Pro only |
Call a pro if: you smell gas, the glass is cracked, the range is in year 1, or the fix means a valve, module, or wiring.
Recall to know about: 2019 Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and JennAir glass cooktops
The CPSC recall 19-189 (August 28, 2019) covers about 26,300 glass cooktops with touch controls (radiant and downdraft radiant) made December 2016 through July 2019, because surface elements could turn on by themselves. Whirlpool models start WCE97US0H and WCE97US6H. These are built-in cooktops, not ranges, but if you have one, contact Whirlpool at 888-900-7897 for a free replacement and keep it off at the breaker when not in use. Search any range model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
Prevent it next time
- Always use the burner cap, and clean it after a spillover (Whirlpool). Keep spills out of the gas tube opening.
- Don't wash caps in the dishwasher or clean them in a self-clean cycle (Whirlpool).
- Dry burners fully after cleaning before you light them.
- Don't use oven cleaners, bleach, or rust removers on burners (Whirlpool).
- Check flames now and then: they should be blue, not yellow (Whirlpool).
- Don't let a flame extend past the edge of the pan (Whirlpool).
- On coil ranges, seat coils fully; a loose coil can arc and burn the receptacle.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a range
Per Whirlpool's US Major Appliance Limited Warranty (W11349438A) and its warranty overview page (see Sources). Terms vary by model, so check your own warranty sheet:
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Factory-specified replacement parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship (or, at Whirlpool's option, a replacement product) | Whirlpool |
What this means for a dead burner: a failed igniter, spark module, switch, valve, coil, or radiant element is covered in year 1. Whirlpool doesn't cover in-home instruction or service to correct improper installation or maintenance, so a wet or misaligned burner, Cooktop Lock, a gas valve left off, or a tripped breaker usually aren't warranty repairs. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Free fixes done: knob pushed in and at Lite, caps matched and flush, ports cleared, burner dry, valve ON, breaker reset, lock off, coil seated and swapped.
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which test pointed to the part.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool-family part numbers (W-, WP-, WPW-, and legacy numbers) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "whirlpool range โฆ" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. GE (WB), Samsung (DG), Frigidaire, Viking, Bosch, Kenmore-, Ikea-, Magic Chef-, and Hotpoint-labeled parts, and cooktop-only parts, were excluded. Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new range cost, all-in? โ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ gas connector or cord)
3. How old is your range, and how long should it last? โ Age and Life (use about 13 years, inside Fixr's 10โ15-year and HomeGuide's 10โ20-year ranges, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ Past
Step A โ Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | โ Repair | ๐ค Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | ๐ค Get a second quote first | โ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Whirlpool gas range's front burner clicks but won't light after a boil-over. Drying it, clearing two ports with a needle, and seating the cap flush fixed it. R = $0.
โ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Whirlpool coil range has one dead 6-inch burner. The coil heats in the other 6-inch spot, so you replace the burned receptacle and the coil yourself: R = $45; N = $800.
45 รท 800 = 6%; life used 7 รท 13 = 54% โ Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 15-year-old Whirlpool glass-top range has a cracked top and a dead radiant element: R = $700; N = $900. It had a $250 oven repair last year.
700 รท 900 = 78%; life used 15 รท 13 = over 100%; repeat check (700 + 250) รท 900 = 106% โ Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a cracked glass top on an older range, a gas valve plus a spark module, repeated repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a coil, a cap or head, an igniter, a receptacle, or a switch; the range is under about 8 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use; HomeGuide also says to repair when the cost is under 50% of a new oven. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new range's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.
Who services Whirlpool ranges near you
1. Whirlpool (warranty or authorized service). In year 1, start with Whirlpool. Its Product Help pages let you schedule service from Whirlpool's preferred list of service providers.
โ Whirlpool Product Help ยท 1-866-698-2538
2. Your installer or gas company. None of the burners light after an install or a move? Check the gas valve and connection first; Whirlpool says a qualified gas technician should connect the appliance to gas. Call the gas company for any gas smell.
3. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them gas or electric, whether it clicks, what the coil swap showed, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
4. An electrician. Whirlpool says to reset the breaker or replace the fuse, and to call an electrician if the problem continues.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you test the switch, receptacle, or spark module before quoting it?
- Is the part listed for my exact model number?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude gas lines, glass tops, and cosmetic parts, and a range that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why won't my Whirlpool gas burner light but it clicks?
Whirlpool points to clogged ports, a wet burner, or a cap on the wrong base or not sitting flush. Clean ports with a straight pin or needle (not a toothpick), dry everything, and seat the matching cap with the alignment pins lined up.
Why does my Whirlpool stove keep clicking when it's off?
Whirlpool says moisture in the switches from cleaning or a spill is the usual cause. Remove the knobs and blow cool air from a hair dryer on the knob shafts, then wait for it to dry.
Why won't any of my Whirlpool burners light?
Check the breaker or fuse and that the main gas valve is on. After a new install or reconnection, turn on one burner knob to release air from the line. Some models lock the burners after a power loss: touch the lock key for 3 seconds.
Why won't my Whirlpool coil burner heat?
Check the breaker, push the knob in before turning it, and make sure the coil is fully inserted. If it still won't heat, swap it to a same-size receptacle: if it works there, the receptacle or switch is the problem.
Why does my Whirlpool coil not glow red like it used to?
Since June 2018, coils are temperature-limiting under a UL standard. Whirlpool says the outer coil stays on and the inner coil cycles on and off. That's normal.
Why does my Whirlpool glass cooktop element turn on and off?
Radiant elements have a limiter that cycles them, even on HI, to protect the glass. Whirlpool says that's normal. If an element doesn't come back on, remove the pan and let the cooktop cool for 30 minutes.
Is it worth fixing a Whirlpool burner?
Usually yes for a cap, head, igniter, coil, receptacle, or switch. A cracked glass top on an older range often isn't. Use the calculator above.
