Maytag Refrigerator Not Cooling? Cooling Off, Showroom Mode, Controls, Vents, Condenser, Fans and Defrost Fixes, Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
If the lights work but nothing gets cold, check the display first. Maytag says a fridge in Showroom/Demo mode keeps its lights on but doesn't cool (the display may read "Demo," "Showroom," or "Shwrm"), and on some side-by-sides "COOLING OFF" means cooling has been switched off. Some models also have to be turned back on after a power outage or surge, or get switched off by accident during cleaning.
Then Maytag's checks, cheapest first:
- Controls. Factory preset is the mid setting. Maytag suggests about 37°F for the fridge (safe range 32–40°F) and 0°F for the freezer. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours between changes.
- Vents and loading. Most Maytag fridges make cold air in the freezer and push it into the fresh food section through vents. Bulky items blocking the vents or the return air path cause a warm fridge.
- Location. Maytag fridges are built for rooms between 55°F and 110°F. A cold garage or hot porch can stop proper cooling.
- New install or big shopping trip? Allow 24 hours after installation, and several hours after adding a lot of warm food. Check that no packaging keeps the freezer door from sealing.
- Condenser. Usually no routine cleaning is needed, but in a greasy, dusty, or pet-heavy home Maytag says clean it every 2–3 months (some models are technician-only; check your manual).
If those don't fix it, it's usually a part: an evaporator fan (freezer cold, fridge warm), a defrost fault (frost on the freezer back wall), a stuck air damper, a condenser fan or start relay (both sections warm), a control board or sensor, or the sealed system. Maytag covers compressor parts for 10 years on refrigerators made after 2017.
Repair or replace? Fans, defrost parts, and a relay are usually worth fixing. A sealed-system repair on an older fridge is where replacing starts to win, unless the compressor part is still under Maytag's warranty. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| "COOLING OFF", Demo/Showroom, fridge switched off, controls set too warm, blocked vents, a garage location, or a fridge installed in the last 24 hours | Setting, mode, airflow, or environment | ✅ Free fix. Change the setting, clear vents, wait 24 hours |
| Freezer cold, fridge warm, frost on the freezer back wall, a silent or scraping fan | Evaporator fan, defrost heater / thermostat, air damper | 🔧 Usually worth repairing. Parts are moderate |
| Both sections warm with the compressor clicking or running nonstop, on a fridge 10+ years old | Start relay, condenser fan, control, or sealed system | ♻️ Get a quote, then compare. Check Maytag's compressor warranty first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Food safety first. Maytag's safe range for the fresh food section is 32–40°F. If it's been above 40°F for a while, move perishables to a cooler with ice. When in doubt, throw it out.
- You smell burning, hear loud buzzing or repeated clicking, or the outlet is hot. Unplug it and call a technician.
- Unplug before cleaning the condenser or touching fans. Fan blades and the machine compartment are live while it's plugged in.
- Never puncture or cut refrigerant tubing. Sealed-system work requires a certified technician.
- The fridge is in its first year, or the problem may be the compressor on a fridge made after 2017 (10-year limited parts coverage). Use Maytag service before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Maytag refrigerator do you have?
Find the model and serial number label inside the refrigerator; its exact spot varies by style, so check your Use & Care Guide. You need it to order the right fan, heater, or damper, and to check warranty coverage.
| Style | Model prefix (examples) | How cold air reaches the fridge | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| French-door bottom-freezer | Often MFI, MFF, MRFF (check label) | Shared system on most units: air made at the freezer coil, pushed through vents | Evaporator fan, defrost, damper; control board |
| Side-by-side | Often MSS, MSB (check label) | Shared system on most units | Some models show COOLING OFF; demo sequences vary |
| Top-freezer | Often MRT (check label) | Shared system; many use a dial control | Dial models: refrigerator dial at 0 – OFF stops cooling |
| Bottom-freezer | Often MBF (check label) | Shared system on most units | Same parts family as French-door |
Model prefixes are examples, not a full list. Maytag is part of the Whirlpool family, so many Maytag fridge parts carry W / WP / WPW numbers. Always order by your exact model number.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Read the display. Look for COOLING OFF, Demo, Showroom, Shwrm, or Power Outage. (See the table below for what each means.)
- Turned on? Maytag says some fridges must be manually turned back on after a power outage or surge, and can be switched off by accident during cleaning.
- Check the setting. Digital panels show temperatures or bars; on dial controls, 1 is warmest and higher numbers are colder. Start near 37°F (fridge) and 0°F (freezer). Change one step, then wait 24 hours.
- Use a thermometer. Maytag suggests an appliance thermometer in the center of each compartment, away from walls, doors, and vents. Recheck after 24 hours.
- Clear the airflow. Pull items away from the back and side walls and from the vents; leave small gaps between containers; don't stack too high. Blocked return air vents break the cold-air loop and warm the fridge.
- Room and door. Confirm the room is within 55–110°F. Check that bins or leftover packaging aren't holding the freezer door open, and keep door openings short.
- Listen. With the freezer door switch pressed, you should hear or feel the freezer fan. At normal room temperature the compressor runs 40–80% of the time, more in a warm room, so long running alone isn't a fault.
How to know it's fixed: 24 hours after your last change, the thermometer reads about 37°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer, drinks are as cold as you like, and there's no frost building on the freezer back wall.
Maytag display messages that look like a failure
Maytag refrigerators don't show a long code list for "not cooling" the way washers do. These are the display states Maytag's US Product Help ties to a warm fridge:
| What you see | Maytag's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| COOLING OFF (some side-by-sides) | Cooling has been turned off; the fridge and freezer won't cool | On many models: press and hold LOCK + MEASURED FILL together for 3 seconds to toggle cooling back on (varies by model; check your Quick Start Guide) |
| Demo, Showroom, or Shwrm; lights on, no cooling | Demo / Showroom mode (for store display) | Exit with your model's sequence; examples below |
| Power Outage + 3 tones (some models) | Power was off and the freezer temperature rose | Touch any button to stop the tone, again to clear the icon; check food |
| Dial models: refrigerator dial on 0 – OFF | Cooling is off | Turn the dial back to a mid setting |
Demo-mode button sequences Maytag lists for side-by-side models (Maytag gives one set of directions for entering or exiting, so the same sequence toggles it; pick the one that matches your buttons):
| Buttons on your panel | Sequence |
|---|---|
| LIGHT and LOCK | Hold together 3 seconds |
| FREEZER TEMP and REFRIGERATOR TEMP | Hold together 5 seconds (if it doesn't respond, unplug 2 minutes, plug back in, try again) |
| LOCK and FILTER | Hold together 3 seconds (display shows COOLING OFF when off) |
| LIGHT and POWER COLD | Hold together 3 seconds |
| OPTIONS and WATER FILTER | Hold together 3 seconds |
Which part each symptom points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Freezer cold, fridge warm | Evaporator fan, air damper | Clear vents; wait 24 hours | Fan or damper | Moderate |
| Frost on freezer back wall | Defrost heater, defrost thermostat, control | Manual defrost | Defrost part | Advanced |
| Both warm, back very hot | Condenser fan, dirty condenser | Clean condenser (if your manual allows) | Condenser fan | Moderate |
| Click, hum, silence | Start relay / overload | — | Relay, then compressor | Advanced → Pro only |
| Erratic temperatures | Temperature sensor (thermistor), control board | Power-cycle | Sensor or board | Moderate → Advanced |
Display meanings from Maytag's US Product Help pages "Not Cooling - Both Sections" (French-door), "Not Cooling - Refrigerator Section - Side by Side", "Cooling Off Indicator Light - Side by Side Refrigerator", and "Demo Mode - Side by Side Refrigerator" (sources 1–4), checked 2026-10-30. The part mapping is our summary of common shared-system failures, not a Maytag code table. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 11) maps Samsung and LG codes to components and DIY difficulty; it has no Maytag entries, so we didn't use it here.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator. Move food to a cooler. Freezer back panels hide the evaporator coil, fan, and defrost parts; take photos as you remove screws.
1. Freezer cold, fresh food warm
Likely causes: a failed or ice-bound evaporator fan motor (on shared-system models it pushes freezer air into the fridge), a stuck air damper control, blocked vents, or the start of a defrost problem.
Signs: no air from the freezer vents with the door switch pressed; the fridge creeps up over a day or two while the freezer stays cold.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (freezer back panel off).
Call a pro if: the fan runs and the damper is open, but the fridge stays warm.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator fan motor | Moves cold air over the coil and into the fridge | Moderate |
| Air damper control | Opens to let cold air into the fresh food section | Moderate |
2. Frost or ice on the freezer back wall
Likely causes: a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or the control that runs defrost. Ice blocks airflow, so the fridge warms first. Maytag notes that frequent door openings let in moisture that can form frost, so rule that out first.
Signs: a white frost pattern on the back panel; the fan may scrape on ice.
DIY difficulty: Advanced. A manual defrost (unplugged with doors open, towels down, food in a cooler) restores cooling for a while and confirms the diagnosis.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator coil | Advanced |
| Defrost thermostat (bi-metal) | Lets the heater run only when the coil is cold | Advanced |
3. Both sections warm, back of the fridge hot
Likely causes: a failed condenser fan motor (machine compartment at the back), a dirty condenser in a dusty or pet-heavy home, or a spot that's too hot (over 110°F).
Signs: the compressor runs but the fan behind the back panel doesn't; the back of the fridge is very hot.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (rear access panel).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser fan motor | Cools the condenser and compressor | Moderate |
4. Compressor clicks but won't run; or runs constantly and nothing gets cold
Likely causes: a failed start relay / overload (clicking every few minutes), a control board or temperature sensor fault, or a sealed-system problem (compressor or refrigerant leak).
Signs: a click, a hum, then silence; or constant running with nothing cold. (Maytag: 40–80% run time is normal, more in a warm room.)
DIY difficulty: Advanced for the relay; Pro only for anything sealed-system. On Maytag refrigerators made after 2017, the compressor part is covered for 10 years; labor is covered in year 1.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor start relay / overload | Starts the compressor | Advanced |
| Electronic control board | Runs fans, defrost, and compressor | Advanced; diagnose first |
| Temperature sensor (thermistor) | Reports temperature to the board | Moderate |
Not sure if it's a fan, defrost, or the sealed system? A technician can check fan operation, frost pattern, and the compressor in one visit; that visit decides repair vs. replace.

Keep it cold (prevention)
- Set it and leave it: about 37°F / 0°F, one step at a time, 24 hours between changes.
- Keep vents and the return air path clear; leave small gaps between containers.
- Clean the condenser every 2–3 months if your home is dusty, greasy, or has pets, if your manual says it's owner-serviceable.
- Keep it indoors in a room between 55°F and 110°F.
- Plan door openings: get everything out at once. Long or frequent openings warm the fridge and add moisture that becomes frost.
- Add big loads gradually; it can take several hours to recover after a lot of warm groceries.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a refrigerator
Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (checked 2026-10-30), for major appliances made after 2017:
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | All parts and labor | Maytag |
| Years 2–10 | Compressor (refrigerators): limited parts coverage | You (labor not included after year 1) |
What this means for a fridge that won't cool: in year 1, fans, defrost parts, boards, and the sealed system are covered with labor. After year 1, only the compressor part is on Maytag's 10-year list for refrigerators, so a fan, heater, damper, relay, or board is out of pocket. Demo mode, COOLING OFF, settings, blocked vents, and a garage location aren't defects. See your model's own warranty sheet for exclusions, and keep your proof of purchase. Maytag's Product Help pages also offer savings of up to 25% on new-appliance extended service plans bought within 30 days of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; compressor part to year 10 (made after 2017); retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: display mode, controls and 24-hour wait, vents, room temperature, door seal, condenser. A service visit for Showroom mode isn't a warranty repair.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and for sealed-system work, ask what was measured to confirm it.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are OEM Whirlpool-family part numbers (W, WP, WPW, and legacy numbers that fit Maytag refrigerators) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "maytag refrigerator …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not Maytag quotes (Fixr's brand table has no Maytag row). "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: check the display and wait 24 hours after any setting change before you buy a fan or board. Showroom mode looks exactly like a dead compressor with the lights on.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 14 years, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A new Maytag side-by-side is warm with the lights on; the display reads "Shwrm." Exiting Showroom mode and waiting 24 hours fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Maytag French-door has a cold freezer and a warm fridge; a tech replaces the evaporator fan motor: R = $300; N = $2,000; no other repairs.
300 ÷ 2,000 = 15%; life used 6 ÷ 14 = 43%; repeat check 15% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old Maytag top-freezer (made before the 10-year warranty) is warm in both sections; a tech finds a refrigerant leak and quotes R = $1,100. Last year it needed a defrost heater for $250. N = $1,200.
1,100 ÷ 1,200 = 92%; life used 13 ÷ 14 = 93%; repeat check (1,100 + 250) ÷ 1,200 = 113% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system repair on a fridge 10+ years old, a second big repair within about 2 years, or a model made before Maytag's 10-year compressor coverage.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, defrost part, damper, sensor, or relay; the fridge is under about 8 years old; it's in year 1; or the failed part is the compressor on a post-2017 model (part covered, labor yours).
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new fridge's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go.

3. DIY with the right part. Fans, a damper, and a sensor are common DIY jobs. Defrost parts and relays are harder. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you rule out Showroom/Cooling Off mode and the 24-hour settle time?
- Is the problem airflow (fan, damper, frost) or the sealed system, and what did you measure?
- Is the compressor part covered by Maytag's 10-year warranty on my model?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans cap refrigerant or sealed-system payouts and exclude food loss. A fridge that's already broken is usually not covered. Maytag sells extended service plans for new appliances.
FAQ
Why is my Maytag refrigerator not cooling but the light is on?
Check for Showroom/Demo mode or COOLING OFF on the display; both keep the lights on with no cooling. Also make sure it wasn't switched off after a power outage or during cleaning.
How do I turn off demo mode on a Maytag refrigerator?
It varies by model. Maytag's side-by-side page gives the same steps for entering or exiting, such as holding LIGHT and LOCK for 3 seconds, or FREEZER TEMP and REFRIGERATOR TEMP for 5 seconds. Your owner's manual has the exact steps.
What should my Maytag refrigerator be set at?
Maytag suggests about 37°F for the fridge (safe range 32–40°F) and 0°F for the freezer. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours.
Why is my Maytag freezer cold but the fridge warm?
On most Maytag fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge through vents. Blocked vents, a failed evaporator fan, a stuck damper, or frost from a defrost fault break that loop.
How long does a Maytag fridge take to cool after installation?
Maytag says allow 24 hours.
Should I clean my Maytag condenser coils?
Usually not routinely. Maytag says clean every 2–3 months if your home is greasy, dusty, or has pets, and some models are technician-only. Check your manual.
Does Maytag's warranty cover the compressor?
On major appliances made after 2017, Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty lists the refrigerator compressor. Labor is covered in year 1 only.
How much does it cost to fix a Maytag refrigerator that's not cooling?
Often nothing: a mode, setting, or airflow issue. Fixr puts not-cooling repairs at $50 to $250 nationally. OEM evaporator fan motors for Maytag were about $47 to $173 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30; sealed-system work runs $600 to $1,400 in cost guides.
