Quick answer

Maytag's free fixes, cheapest first:

  1. Is it on? Push the wire lever down, or switch the ice maker on (dial, switch, or display, depending on the model). If the lever is up, Maytag says it won't make new ice.
  2. Freezer temperature: Maytag's help pages say 0–5°F. Its blog says 0°F for the most ice, and no ice above 5°F.
  3. Water on and flowing: the shutoff valve fully open, the line connected, and no kinks. Don't push the fridge too far back against the wall.
  4. Filter: if you just changed it, make sure it's locked in. If it's due, replace it (Maytag says about every 6 months, or when the light comes on).
  5. Reset: press and hold the ice maker's reset button for a few seconds, or unplug the fridge for 1 minute. Check again in a couple of hours.
  6. Ice jammed? Remove the bin, clear stuck ice with a plastic knife, or let it melt.
  7. New fridge? Maytag says wait 24 hours for the first ice and three days for full production.

Still no ice? Do Maytag's cube count (empty the bin, don't use ice for 24 hours, count). Below normal with good water and temperature usually means the water inlet valve or the ice maker itself.

Which Maytag ice maker do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label inside the fridge; its exact spot varies by style, so check your Use & Care Guide. Maytag is a Whirlpool Corporation brand, so many Maytag fridge parts carry W / WP / WPW numbers and use everydrop filters.

StyleModel prefix (examples)Where the ice maker isHow it turns on
French-door bottom-freezerOften MFI, MFF, MRFF (check label)Some models: left side of the fresh food ceiling, bin in the left doorControl set to ON; a sensor stops ice when the bin is full, the door is open, or the bin is out
Side-by-sideOften MSS, MSB (check label)Freezer side, above the binLever, switch, or display
Bottom-freezerOften MBF (check label)Freezer drawerLever or switch
Top-freezer (ice maker fitted)Often MRT (check label)FreezerWire lever down

Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Always order parts by your exact model number.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. On? Lever down, or the switch, dial ("Ice Maker On"), or display setting on.
  2. Freezer temperature: set 0–5°F (Maytag). If you change it, wait 24 hours before checking again.
  3. Water: dispense a glass of water (if you have a dispenser). A weak or no stream points at the filter, line, or valve.
  4. Filter just changed? Maytag's test: remove the filter and try to dispense water. If water comes out with the filter out, the filter wasn't installed right. Reinstall it so it locks in.
  5. Filter due? Maytag says about every 6 months, when the indicator comes on, or more often with hard water.
  6. Line: pull the fridge out carefully and look for kinks or a crushed line. Maytag recommends 1/4-inch OD soft copper or PEX with a service loop.
  7. Reset: hold the reset button a few seconds, or unplug the fridge for 1 minute.
  8. Jams: take out the bin and look for ice stuck between the bin and the lever, or frozen clumps. Clear with a plastic knife.
  9. Cube count: empty the bin, don't use ice for 24 hours, then count. On the ice maker type in Maytag's bottom-freezer article, normal is 56–72 cubes.

How to know it's fixed: you get a normal cube count over 24 hours, or about three pounds of ice a day (Maytag's blog figure for a standard ice maker).

Maytag's own pages disagree on temperature and water pressure

Maytag's Product Help pages and its blog cover the same problem but give different numbers and directions. Here they are side by side.

Maytag Product Help: "Ice Maker Not Working - Troubleshooting" and "Low Ice Production"maytag.com blog: "How To Possibly Fix an Ice Maker That's Not Working"
Freezer temperatureSet the freezer to 0–5°F. If the fridge is too warm, ice production suffers; try a colder setting0°F for maximum ice; no ice above 5°F. But also: if the thermostat is set too low, water may freeze before reaching the mold, and a too-low setting can block the dispenser with ice
Water pressureNot given; check the valve is fully open and the line isn't kinkedThe water valve needs at least 20 psi; for the bucket test, the stream should be steady at 30–120 psi
ResetHold the reset button a few seconds, or unplug 1 minute; check again in a couple of hoursNot covered; focuses on the lever or switch and clearing jams

Our take: set the freezer to 0°F and leave it there for 24 hours; that's inside both ranges. Only go colder than that if the help pages' other checks pass and ice is still slow. For pressure, treat 20 psi as the bare minimum for the valve and aim for the blog's 30 psi or more; a weak stream in the bucket test means a plumbing, line, or filter problem, not the ice maker.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge (or switch off the breaker) and close the water supply valve. Lay a towel down.

1. Slow dispenser and little or no ice

Likely cause: a clogged or overdue water filter, or one that isn't locked in. Maytag says a clogged or badly installed filter can reduce water flow to both the ice maker and dispenser. Try Maytag's filter-out test first.

DIY difficulty: Easy.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
everydrop water filterFilters water to the dispenser and ice makerEasy

2. No water reaching the ice maker (or the dispenser) with a good filter and line

Likely cause: the water inlet valve. Maytag's blog says the valve needs at least 20 psi; if your bucket test shows a strong stream at the line but nothing reaches the ice maker, the valve may have failed.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

3. Dispenser works, but no water in the ice mold

Likely cause: a frozen or blocked fill tube, or a tube out of position. Maytag's blog says to make sure the fill tube is positioned properly, generally above the tray or in the fill cup.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Ice maker fill tubeCarries water into the moldModerate

4. Ice in the mold that never drops, even after a reset

Likely cause: the ice maker assembly (its motor, heater, or control). Maytag says unplug for 1 minute and check again in a couple of hours. If it still won't harvest, the ice maker itself usually needs replacing.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

5. Ice in the bin, but the dispenser won't deliver it

Likely cause: a frozen clump in the bin, or the auger motor that turns it. Clear and thaw the bin first. If the bin is clear and you hear nothing when you press the paddle, the auger motor may have failed.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

Call a pro if: the fridge is also not cooling well, you'd need to take off the back panel for the valve and aren't comfortable with water and wiring connections, or the fridge is in year 1.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a refrigerator

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (checked 2026-10-30), for major appliances made after 2017:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and laborMaytag
Years 2–10Compressor (refrigerators): limited parts coverageYou (labor not included after year 1)

What this means for an ice maker: a defective ice maker, inlet valve, or auger motor is covered with labor in year 1. After year 1, those parts are out of pocket; only the compressor part is on Maytag's 10-year list for refrigerators. Water filters are consumables, and a kinked line, a half-open valve, or low house water pressure isn't a product defect. See your model's own warranty sheet for exclusions, and keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: on/off, freezer 0–5°F, valve and line, filter test, reset, jams, cube count, pressure test.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech tested the valve before replacing the ice maker (or the reverse).

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool-family part numbers (W, WP, WPW, EDR, and legacy Maytag numbers) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Maytag refrigerators are built by Whirlpool Corporation, so the parts use Whirlpool numbers; a "maytag ice maker" search returned no listings, so the ice maker price comes from a Whirlpool part-number search and fit depends on your model. GE, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, Blomberg, and other non-Whirlpool parts were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not Maytag-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means the guides don't itemize that job, so we don't show a price.

Tip: if the dispenser also runs slow, buy a filter before you buy an ice maker. A tired filter starves both.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 12 years, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Make sure the fridge cools well
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace (or skip the ice maker)

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old Maytag French-door stops making ice two weeks after a filter change. The filter-out test shows it wasn't locked in; reseating it fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): An 8-year-old Maytag side-by-side has ice frozen in the mold that never drops, even after a reset. A tech replaces the ice maker: R = $350; N = $1,800.
350 ÷ 1,800 = 19%; life used 8 ÷ 12 = 67% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 14-year-old Maytag needs an inlet valve and an ice maker, a year after a fan motor ($250), and the fridge runs warm: R = $600; N = $1,100.
600 ÷ 1,100 = 55% (second-quote zone); life used 14 ÷ 12 = over 100%; repeat check (600 + 250) ÷ 1,100 = 77% → Replace, or turn the ice maker off and use trays.

Tips toward replacing: an ice maker plus a valve on an old fridge that also cools poorly.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, fill tube, or a single ice maker on a fridge that otherwise works well; or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60%, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. And remember the cheapest option: turning the ice maker off and living without it costs nothing.

Need a repair pro?
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.

3. A plumber. For low house water pressure, a bad shutoff valve, or a new supply line run.

4. DIY with the right part. Filters, fill tubes, and many plug-in ice makers are DIY-friendly. Order by your exact model number, and unplug the fridge and close the water first.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans limit or exclude ice makers, water lines, and filters. An ice maker that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Maytag ice maker not making ice?
Maytag's common causes: the ice maker is off (lever up or switch off), the freezer is warmer than 5°F, the water valve isn't fully open or the line is kinked, or the filter is clogged or not locked in. Check those, then reset.

How do I reset a Maytag ice maker?
Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds if your model has one. If not, unplug the refrigerator for 1 minute and plug it back in. Check for ice after a couple of hours.

What temperature should my Maytag freezer be for ice?
Maytag's help pages say 0–5°F. Its blog says 0°F for maximum ice production, and no ice above 5°F.

How long does a new Maytag ice maker take to make ice?
Maytag says wait 24 hours for ice production to begin and three days for full production.

How much ice should a Maytag ice maker make?
Maytag's blog says a standard ice maker makes about three pounds a day. For the ice maker type in its bottom-freezer article, a 24-hour cube count of 56–72 cubes is normal.

Can a new water filter stop my ice maker?
Yes. Maytag says an improperly installed filter can reduce or stop water flow. Remove it and try dispensing water; if water comes out with the filter out, reinstall the filter so it locks in.

Is it worth fixing a Maytag ice maker?
Usually yes if the fridge is otherwise healthy; an ice maker is a single part. On an older fridge that also cools poorly, put the money toward a new fridge, or simply turn the ice maker off.
