Quick answer

First, make sure it's really a leak. Samsung says a pool of water (or a sheet of ice) is often condensation or a spill you didn't notice, and the most common place to find water is at the bottom of the compartment, under the crisper drawers. Wipe it up and see if it comes back.

Samsung's leak map, by where the water is:

  1. Under the drawers, under the fridge, or elsewhere: level the fridge so it tilts back slightly. Samsung says a correctly leveled fridge is not level front to back; the tilt helps the doors close and the water drain. If the front moving wheels still touch the floor, the front isn't high enough. Then clear the water; if it returns, request service.
  2. From the water filter: remove it and check the filter and housing for damage, and make sure it's a genuine Samsung filter. Samsung shows how to spot counterfeits. If the housing is damaged, or it leaks with the filter out, request service.
  3. From the dispenser: a few drips right after dispensing are normal. Otherwise, clear ice from the chute, check the chute seal, purge air from the line, and test water pressure (6 oz in under 10 seconds).
  4. From the Autofill pitcher: drain the compartment via the rubber cap, check for cracks, reassemble correctly, and make sure the spring button behind the pitcher isn't stuck.

Ice on the freezer floor or water under the crisper drawers that keeps returning usually means the defrost drain is frozen or clogged. Samsung's US guidance for a leak that keeps coming back is to request service; Samsung sells an excessive-frost service kit for some models.

Repair or replace? Leaks are usually cheap to fix: a filter, leveling, a drain tube or kit, an inlet valve. A fridge is rarely worth replacing over a leak alone. See the calculator below.

Which Samsung refrigerator do you have?

Samsung says the model and serial label is inside the refrigerator compartment on a side wall above the top shelf (some models also have one on the outside). You need it for the right filter, drain parts, and warranty.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Wipe it up and watch. Samsung says to clear the water to confirm it's actually a leak. Condensation after a power outage or with the fridge recently off, or a leaking food container, is common.
  2. Level the fridge to tilt back. Look under the front: if the moving wheels touch the floor, raise the front with the leveling legs until they don't (your manual has the steps). This also helps doors close by themselves.
  3. Check the doors close and seal. Samsung's frost guide suggests putting a flashlight inside and closing the door; wherever light shows, the door isn't sealing. Overstuffed shelves are the usual cause.
  4. Keep 2 inches in front of the vents inside, and clear any frost on them. Samsung says blocked vents trap moisture that turns to frost, and frost then blocks the vents further.
  5. Inspect the water filter (see below).
  6. Check behind the fridge (with the water valve closed if anything is wet): the supply line connection, any kinks, and drips at the inlet valve.

How to know it's fixed: the floor and the drawer bottoms stay dry for 48 hours of normal use, and no new ice forms on the freezer floor.

Leaks from the water filter

Samsung's steps:

  1. Remove the filter and check both the filter and the filter housing for damage.
  2. Make sure it's genuine. Samsung's tells: a torpedo-style genuine filter has a rounded finger grip (fakes feel flat and sharp); a canister-style genuine filter has a serial number printed on the body and a rib on the side. Replace any damaged or non-genuine filter.
  3. Clean up the water and reinsert the filter. If it leaks again, fit a Samsung brand filter.
  4. Housing damaged, or still leaking with a new filter (or with the filter removed)? Samsung says request service; the housing is a replaceable part.

Dispenser dripping or leaking

Samsung says a few drips right after dispensing are normal; hold the glass there 3โ€“5 seconds. Beyond that, the common causes are air in the water line (new filter or new install), ice residue in the chute, or a chute that isn't sealing.

  1. Clean the ice chute and its seal until completely dry.
  2. Check the chute-to-bucket seal. On French-door models, open the right door and look at the ice maker on the left door: the gasket should sit flush against the ice bucket. A gap lets warm air in and melts ice, which drips from the dispenser. Leveling usually fixes it.
  3. Doors removed recently (for delivery)? Check the water line and couplers under the hinge cover aren't bent; air gets in at a bad coupler.
  4. Purge the air. Dispense water into a large pitcher until it stops; if the stream sputters, repeat up to three more times. A steady stream means the air is out. On a well system, Samsung says an air eliminator should be installed.
  5. Test water pressure. You should fill 6 oz (3/4 cup) in under 10 seconds. If it fails, remove the filter and test again: passing without the filter means an old filter or low pressure. Samsung says house pressure should be 30โ€“130 psi; open the supply valve fully, and call a plumber if it's too high or too low (reverse-osmosis systems can cause low pressure).
  6. Model notes: RS27T and RS22T cross-connected lines swap ice and water; RF30BB, RF29BB, RF24BB, RF23BB need the dispenser nozzle in place. On models with both a dispenser and an Autofill pitcher, a leaking dispenser needs service.

If it still sputters or drips when not in use, request service.

Autofill pitcher leaking

  1. Remove the pitcher and dry it; have a towel ready.
  2. Remove the rubber drain cap under the Autofill compartment and drain the water (older models have no cap). Samsung says the drainage area must be dry or Autofill won't resume; code 76C (or a blinking Autofill light) means water is detected there.
  3. Inspect the pitcher and lid for cracks. It's not dishwasher safe; dishwasher heat can warp it and cause leaks.
  4. Reassemble correctly: pour spout facing away from the handle; two-part lid pieces matched.
  5. Press the spring-loaded button behind the pitcher; it mustn't stick.
  6. Still leaking, even out of the fridge? Replace the pitcher. Not the pitcher? Request service.

Water under the drawers or ice on the freezer floor that keeps coming back

When the defrost cycle melts frost off the evaporator, the water runs down a defrost drain to a drain pan near the compressor, where it evaporates. If the drain freezes or clogs, the water overflows inside instead: under the crisper drawers in the fridge section or as ice on the freezer floor.

What you can do safely:

What usually needs a pro or confident DIY: removing the evaporator cover to clear the drain trough, replacing the drain tube, or fitting Samsung's excessive-frost service kit (sold for some models), and testing the defrost heater and defrost sensor. Samsung's US guidance for a leak that returns after leveling and clearing is to request service.

Samsung refrigerator codes linked to leaks and ice

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker, and close the water supply valve. Move food to a cooler.

1. Water under the crisper drawers or ice on the freezer floor keeps returning

Likely causes: a frozen or clogged defrost drain, a defrost heater or defrost sensor that isn't clearing the evaporator fully, or a drain tube off its fitting.

Signs: clear ice (refrozen water, not white frost) on the freezer floor; water returns days after you wipe it; fan noise or 21E/22E from iced fans.

DIY difficulty: Advanced (evaporator cover off).

Call a pro if: the fridge is in year 1, or you'd need to test heaters and sensors.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Defrost drain tube / kitCarries defrost water to the panAdvanced
Defrost heaterMelts frost off the evaporatorAdvanced
Defrost sensorTells the board when to stop defrostingAdvanced

2. Water under the back of the fridge, or the dispenser drips with good pressure

Likely causes: a leaking water inlet valve, a cracked filter housing, or a loose supply line.

Signs: water at the back bottom; drips continue with the dispenser idle; pressure test passes.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (rear panel off; water off).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Water inlet valveOpens for the dispenser and ice makerModerate
Water filter housingHolds the filterModerate
Water filterFilters water; a bad seal leaksEasy

3. Water from the ice maker area or ice bucket

Likely causes: an ice chute or bucket seal gap (warm air melts ice), an ice maker fill problem, or a water reservoir/tank leak on models with one.

DIY difficulty: Easy for seals and alignment; moderate for the ice maker.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Ice makerMakes and ejects iceModerate

What Samsung's warranty covers on a refrigerator

Per Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page (re-read 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and labor (standard manufacturer's warranty)Samsung
Limited-timeFree 2-year extended warranty on eligible refrigerators bought during Samsung's 2026 offer (ends 12/31/2026); claim requiredCheck your terms
Up to 5 yearsSealed system coverageSamsung (sealed-system labor)
Up to 10 yearsDigital inverter compressor (parts)Check your terms after year 5

What this means for a leak: drain parts, heaters, sensors, inlet valves, and filter housings are covered in year 1 (or an eligible extended period). Leveling, filter replacement, and drain cleaning are maintenance, not defects, and non-genuine filters can cause leaks Samsung won't treat as a fault. Keep your proof of purchase.

โ†’ Samsung US: home-appliance warranty ยท Request service

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Is it a leak? Wipe it up and watch for 48 hours after leveling.
  2. Warranty: year 1, the 2026 extended offer, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  3. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech will clear the drain or only replace parts.

Tip: if you're waiting for a technician because of ice, don't chip at it with anything sharp; you can puncture a refrigerant line.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ water-line kit, + cabinet work if it won't fit the same opening)
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10โ€“20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace. Count food loss and floor damage from a leak that keeps returning.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Samsung French-door fridge has water under the crisper drawers after a move. The front wheels were on the floor; leveling it back fixed it. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Samsung fridge keeps getting ice on the freezer floor. A tech clears the drain and fits a drain kit: R = $250; N = $2,000; no other repairs.
250 รท 2,000 = 13%; life used 6 รท 15 = 40%; repeat check 13% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 14-year-old Samsung fridge leaks, cools poorly, and the tech finds a sealed-system leak out of warranty: R = $1,100; N = $1,800. It had a $300 ice maker last year.
1,100 รท 1,800 = 61%; life used 14 รท 15 = 93%; repeat check (1,100 + 300) รท 1,800 = 78% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system problem out of coverage, repeated ice-maker and drain failures, rust or cracked liners, or a fridge past about 15 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's leveling, a filter, a drain tube or kit, a valve, or a heater; the fridge is in year 1 (or the 2026 extended period); or a compressor or sealed-system part is inside Samsung's longer coverage.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude water damage, water lines, filters, and ice makers, and a fridge that's already leaking is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Samsung refrigerator leaking water?
Samsung says water is often condensation or a spill, and the most common place is under the crisper drawers. Level the fridge so it tilts back (front wheels off the floor), check the water filter is genuine and undamaged, and clear ice from the dispenser chute. If water keeps returning, request service.

Why is there water under the crisper drawers in my Samsung fridge?
Usually defrost water that isn't draining: the fridge isn't tilted back enough, or the defrost drain is frozen or clogged. Level it first; if water returns, the drain needs clearing.

Why is there ice on the bottom of my Samsung freezer?
Defrost water refreezing because the drain is iced or blocked, or warm air getting in through a door that isn't sealing. Fix the door, defrost (no hair dryer), and call for service if it comes back.

Why is my Samsung water dispenser dripping?
A few drips right after dispensing are normal. Otherwise, Samsung lists air in the line, ice in the chute, or a chute seal gap. Clear the chute, purge the line, and test that 6 oz fills in under 10 seconds.

How do I tell if my Samsung water filter is genuine?
Samsung says a genuine torpedo filter has a rounded finger grip; a genuine canister filter has a serial number and a rib on the body. Counterfeits can leak.

Does Samsung's warranty cover a leaking refrigerator?
Part failures are covered in year 1 (and in Samsung's 2026 extended offer for eligible purchases). Leveling, filters, and drain cleaning are maintenance.

How much does it cost to fix a Samsung refrigerator leak?
Often nothing. Fixr puts leak repairs at $60 to $250 depending on whether the water is inside or underneath. Samsung drain tubes were listed at about $14 to $39 and inlet valves at about $96 to $183 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30.

Should I replace a Samsung fridge that leaks?
Rarely for a leak alone. Replace if there's also a sealed-system failure outside Samsung's coverage, or the fridge is near the end of its life with repeated repairs.
