Whirlpool Ice Maker Not Working? Water Supply, Filter, Freezer Temperature, Shutoff Arm, Reset and Part Fixes, Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Whirlpool lists four common causes: a restricted water supply, a freezer that isn't cold enough, an ice maker that's turned off, and water filter problems. Check them in this order:
- Is it on? On wire-arm models, lower the wire shutoff arm (arm up = off). On switch models, set the switch to I (On). Some models turn the ice maker on from the display. A full bin raises the arm and stops production on purpose.
- Is the freezer cold enough? Whirlpool says set the freezer between 0°F and 5°F for good ice production. After any change, wait 24 hours.
- Is water getting there? The house valve must be fully open, the supply line not kinked or pinched (don't push the fridge tight against the wall), and connected to a cold water supply.
- Filter. Replace it every 6 months or when the light comes on. If you just changed it, make sure it's locked in and sealed, then flush it (1, 2, or 4 gallons depending on the filter).
- Reset. Press and hold the ice maker's reset button for a few seconds, or unplug the fridge for 1 minute. Wait a couple of hours and check the bin.
- New install? Whirlpool says allow 24 hours for the first ice, three days for full production, and discard the first three batches.
If those don't fix it, it's usually a part: the ice maker assembly (motor, heater, or control), the water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube (or its heater), or the in-door ice maker's fan or sensor on French-door models.
Repair or replace? An ice maker assembly or inlet valve is a moderate repair that's almost always worth it on a fridge that still cools well. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Ice maker switched off or arm up, freezer warmer than 5°F, water valve closed, line kinked, filter old or not seated, or a new install under 3 days | Setting, supply, or filter | ✅ Free fix (or a filter) |
| Ice maker fills but never dumps, doesn't fill while the dispenser works, or makes small or hollow cubes after a reset and a fresh filter | Ice maker assembly, frozen fill tube, inlet valve, low water pressure | 🔧 Usually worth repairing. Parts are moderate |
| No ice and no dispenser water, plus a fridge that's also warm, on a fridge 10+ years old | Bigger cooling problem, or several worn parts | ♻️ Get a quote, then compare. Fix the cooling first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Water is leaking behind the fridge or onto the floor. Close the supply valve first.
- You'd need to remove the ice maker or unplug its harness. Unplug the refrigerator before you touch wiring or remove screws.
- Don't chip ice with sharp tools. You can puncture the mold, a water line, or (in the freezer wall) refrigerant tubing.
- The fridge is in its first year. Whirlpool covers parts and labor for one year; use Whirlpool service first.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
The ice maker mold has a heater that warms it during harvest; give it a few minutes before touching it after a cycle.

Which Whirlpool ice maker do you have?
Whirlpool's on/off guide shows several styles; check the model label inside the fresh food section and your manual.
| Style | Where it is | How to turn it on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire-arm ice maker | Freezer | Lower the wire shutoff arm; lift to turn off | Bin full raises the arm |
| Wire arm behind a door | Freezer, behind a small ice maker door | Lift the door, lower the arm | Same shutoff logic |
| Switch ice maker | Freezer | Toggle to I (On) / O (Off); on some, the switch is on the freezer door wall behind the bin | |
| In-door / ceiling ice maker | French-door: top left of the fresh food section, ice bin in the left door | Control set to ON; a sensor stops ice when the bin is full, the door is open, or the bin is out | Model-specific parts |
| Nugget ice maker | Some bottom-freezer models | Display setting | Holds about 2.4 lb; an empty bin takes about 6 hours to refill |
Whirlpool part numbers usually start with W, WP, or WPW. Always order by your exact model number.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Turn it on. Wire arm down, switch on I, or the display setting on. Whirlpool notes that an ice maker left on without a water supply can buzz and make the freezer and crisper drawers too cold.
- Set the freezer. 0–5°F for good ice production; wait 24 hours after a change.
- Water supply. Valve fully open; line securely connected; no kinks. Whirlpool's install spec is ¼-inch OD soft copper or PEX to a cold supply, with a service loop so the fridge can roll out.
- Filter. If it's new, take it out and try the water dispenser. If water flows without the filter, the filter wasn't installed right; reinstall it and lock it. If it's over 6 months old or the indicator is on, replace it.
- Flush. After a new filter, dispense the gallons your filter's instructions call for (Whirlpool: 1, 2, or 4 gallons depending on the filter). No dispenser? Make and discard three full bins of ice. Air left in the system can cause small or hollow cubes.
- Reset. Hold the reset button a few seconds, or unplug the fridge 1 minute. Wait a couple of hours.
- Bin and shelf. The bin must sit directly under the ice maker; if you removed a freezer shelf, put it back so the arm can sense a full bin. Don't store bagged ice in the bin; Whirlpool says it can damage the arm or ice maker module.
How to know it's fixed: run Whirlpool's cube count: empty the bin, don't use ice for 24 hours, then count. On the French-door bottom-freezer model Whirlpool describes, normal is 56–72 cubes in 24 hours. Within range = the ice maker works.
Whirlpool ice maker clues and what they mean
Whirlpool ice makers don't show a long code list for "no ice." These are the clues Whirlpool's US Product Help ties to an ice problem:
| What you see | Whirlpool's explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wire arm up | Ice maker off (manually, or a full bin raised it) | Lower the arm |
| Ice in the mold, nothing in the bin | Ice made but not dumped | Unplug 1 minute to reset; check a couple of hours later |
| Buzzing from the ice maker; freezer and crisper too cold | Ice maker on with no water supply | Turn the ice maker off, or connect and open the water |
| Small, hollow, or cloudy cubes; dispenser drips | Air in the system after a filter change, or low water pressure | Flush per the filter instructions |
| Slow water and low ice | Clogged or badly installed filter | Reseat or replace the filter |
| First batches wet, slushy, or misshapen | New install; fridge not at temperature | Discard the first three batches; allow 3 days |
| Too much ice / ice in the freezer | Bin out of place, shelf missing, or bagged ice damaged the arm | Reseat the bin and shelf; remove bagged ice |
Which part each symptom points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No water in the mold, dispenser works | Frozen fill tube, fill-tube heater | Thaw the tube | Heater or ice maker | Moderate → Advanced |
| No water in the mold, no dispenser water either | Supply valve, line, filter, inlet valve | Valve, line, filter | Inlet valve | Easy → Advanced |
| Water in the mold, never harvests | Ice maker assembly (motor, heater, control) | Reset | Ice maker | Moderate |
| Low production after all checks | Freezer temperature, inlet valve, ice maker | 0–5°F, cube count | Inlet valve or ice maker | Easy → Advanced |
Clues from Whirlpool's US Product Help pages "Ice Maker Not Working - Troubleshooting", "Not Making Ice - Refrigerator", "Low Ice Production", "How to Turn the Ice Maker On and Off", and "Making too Much Ice" (sources 1–6), checked 2026-10-30. The part mapping is our summary, not a Whirlpool code table. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 13) maps Samsung and LG codes to components and DIY difficulty; it has no Whirlpool entries, so we didn't use it here.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator. Close the water supply valve before disconnecting any line. Empty the bin and keep towels handy.
1. Mold stays empty, but the water dispenser works
Likely causes: a frozen fill tube (the short tube that feeds water into the mold) or a failed fill-tube heater; less often, the ice maker isn't calling for water.
Signs: ice visible in the fill-tube opening at the back of the mold; dispenser water flows normally.
DIY difficulty: Moderate to thaw (unplugged, towels, hair dryer on low, no sharp tools); Advanced to replace the heater.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Fill-tube heater | Keeps the fill tube from freezing | Advanced |
2. No ice and no (or very slow) dispenser water
Likely causes: the house valve, supply line, or filter (most common), or a failed water inlet valve at the back of the fridge.
Signs: dispenser trickles or nothing; ice production stops at the same time.
DIY difficulty: Easy for valve, line, and filter; Advanced for the inlet valve (rear panel, water connections, wiring).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water filter | Filters water to the dispenser and ice maker | Easy |
| Water inlet valve | Opens to send water to the ice maker and dispenser | Advanced |
3. Mold full of ice, but it never dumps
Likely causes: the ice maker assembly (motor, mold heater, or its control) after a reset doesn't clear it. Whirlpool's first step is a 1-minute unplug reset.
Signs: cubes frozen in the mold for hours; arm down; freezer cold.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (usually a few screws and one harness plug).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Ice maker assembly | Fills, freezes, warms, and ejects cubes | Moderate |
4. Low production, small or hollow cubes
Likely causes: air in the line after a filter change, low water pressure, a partly clogged filter, a freezer warmer than 5°F, or a weak inlet valve.
What to do: flush the filter, check the freezer temperature, and run the 24-hour cube count. If the count is low with good water flow at the dispenser, have the valve and ice maker checked.
5. French-door in-door ice maker: no ice, everything else checks out
Likely causes: this ice maker sits in the fresh food section (Whirlpool: left side of the ceiling, bin in the left door) and depends on its own cooling and sensor parts, which are model-specific. If the bin, door, and settings check out, the problem is inside that compartment.
DIY difficulty: Advanced to Pro only. Ask a technician to check airflow to the ice compartment.
Water on, filter fresh, freezer at 0–5°F, reset done, and still no ice? A technician can test the inlet valve and ice maker in one visit.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a refrigerator
Per Whirlpool's US Major Appliance Limited Warranty (W11349438A, see Sources):
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 — all Whirlpool-brand major appliances | Factory-specified replacement parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanship | Whirlpool |
| Years 2–5 — French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side refrigerators | Sealed refrigeration system only (compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, tubing) | Whirlpool (parts and labor) |
What this means for an ice maker: the ice maker, inlet valve, and fill-tube heater are covered in year 1 only; after that they're out of pocket. Water filters are consumables and aren't covered. Whirlpool also excludes in-home instruction, improper installation (including household plumbing), and food loss. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: on/off, 0–5°F, valve and line, filter seated and flushed, reset, bin position, cube count. A service visit for an ice maker that was switched off isn't a warranty repair.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask whether the tech confirmed water reaches the valve before replacing the ice maker.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are OEM Whirlpool part numbers (W, WP, WPW, EDR, and legacy numbers) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "whirlpool …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not Whirlpool quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: if the dispenser also runs slow, buy a filter before you buy an ice maker. A tired filter starves both.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 14 years, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace. A fridge that cools well with a dead ice maker is a strong repair candidate; you can also live without the ice maker (turn it off) if the numbers don't work.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Whirlpool side-by-side stopped making ice after a filter change. The filter wasn't locked in; reseating and flushing it fixes the problem. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Whirlpool French-door's mold fills but never dumps after a reset. A tech replaces the ice maker: R = $350; N = $2,000; no other repairs.
350 ÷ 2,000 = 18%; life used 7 ÷ 14 = 50%; repeat check 18% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old Whirlpool top-freezer needs an inlet valve and an ice maker: R = $450. Last year it needed a defrost repair for $300. N = $1,100.
450 ÷ 1,100 = 41%; life used 13 ÷ 14 = 93%; repeat check (450 + 300) ÷ 1,100 = 68% → Replace, or turn the ice maker off and keep the fridge running.
Tips toward replacing: the fridge is also struggling to cool, it's 10+ years old with a second repair within about 2 years, or the in-door ice system needs several parts.
Tips toward repairing: the fridge cools fine, it's the ice maker or valve alone, or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new fridge's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go.

Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them your ice maker style (wire arm, switch, in-door, nugget), whether the dispenser works, the freezer temperature, and what your cube count showed.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A plumber. For a new supply line, a stuck shutoff valve, or low house water pressure.
4. DIY with the right part. Filters are easy; a freezer ice maker assembly is a common DIY swap. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you confirm water reaches the inlet valve, and how much flows at the dispenser?
- Is it the ice maker, the valve, or the fill tube?
- Is this covered in year 1?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans limit or exclude ice makers and water lines, or cover them only as an add-on. An ice maker that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my Whirlpool ice maker not making ice?
Whirlpool's common causes: the ice maker is off, the freezer is warmer than 0–5°F, the water supply is restricted, or the filter is clogged or not seated.
How do I reset my Whirlpool ice maker?
Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds if your model has one. Otherwise unplug the fridge for 1 minute, plug it back in, and check for ice after a couple of hours.
How do I turn on my Whirlpool ice maker?
Lower the wire shutoff arm, set the switch to I (On), or turn it on from the display, depending on the model.
How long does a new Whirlpool ice maker take to make ice?
About 24 hours for the first ice and three days for full production. Discard the first three batches.
What freezer temperature does a Whirlpool ice maker need?
Whirlpool recommends 0°F to 5°F.
Why are my Whirlpool ice cubes small or hollow?
Usually air in the system after a filter change or low water pressure. Flush the filter per its instructions.
How much ice should a Whirlpool ice maker make?
On the French-door bottom-freezer model in Whirlpool's cube-count test, 56–72 cubes in 24 hours.
How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool ice maker?
