LG Refrigerator Leaking Water? Back, Dispenser, Filter, Inside, or Freezer Ice — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
LG sorts leaks by where the water is. Most of LG's fixes are free and take a few minutes.
LG's checks, by location:
- Back, bottom, or front of the fridge: usually the water line. Pull the fridge out and look where the line enters the fitting at the back. Only one black line around the tube should be visible. If you see two, press the collet and push the tube in until only one shows. Cracked, split, or kinked lines need service; close the home saddle valve until then.
- Dispenser: air in the line (dispense 2–3 gallons), melting ice in the bin (empty it if the icemaker is off), or a stuck dispenser lever (lock the panel, work the lever, clean off sugary residue).
- Water filter: a non-LG filter or one not installed correctly. Turn it clockwise until it locks; never push or pull it without turning.
- Inside, below the left door of a French-door model: the dispenser water line behind the lower door cover may need pushing back into its fitting (the same one-black-line test).
- Ice in the bottom of the freezer, or water dripping from the ceiling of the fridge section: a blocked freezer drain. LG's fix: empty it, unplug, leave the doors open at least 24 hours (about 1 day in summer, up to 3 in winter) and let the ice melt naturally. No hair dryer, no hot water.
Repair or replace? Most LG leaks are free or cheap. A fridge is rarely worth replacing over a leak alone. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Two black lines showing at a water fitting; a non-LG or unlocked filter; dispenser drips after a filter change; icemaker off with ice still in the bin | Installation, filter, air, melting ice | ✅ Free or cheap fix. Push the line in, lock the filter, purge, empty the bin |
| Ice in the bottom of the freezer or water dripping from the fridge ceiling that returns after a full defrost; dH code; a cracked line at the back | Drain blocked deep inside, defrost heater, damaged water line | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Leak plus poor cooling, a CH/CL (refrigerant leak) code, or a fridge 15+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Sealed system or several systems wearing out | ♻️ Lean toward replacing. Check LG's 5-year sealed-system and 10-year compressor-part coverage first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Water has reached the outlet or the power cord behind the fridge. Switch off the fridge's breaker before you touch the plug.
- Water is spraying or running from the supply line. LG says turn off the home saddle valve to stop the leak until it's fixed. Call a plumber if the house valve itself leaks.
- The display shows CH or CL. LG says those codes indicate a refrigerant leak (high or low side). That's pro only.
- You smell burning, or the breaker trips. Leave it off and call a technician.
- The fridge is still under warranty. Use LG's warranty service before you remove any cover or panel.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG fridge do you have?
Find your model and serial number on the label inside the fridge compartment (usually on a side wall). You need it for the right filter, valve, or drain part, and to check warranty dates.
| Model family (examples) | Style | Where leaks usually start | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LFXS, LFXC, LMXS, LMXC, LRMVS, LRFVS, LRFXC, LRYXS (incl. InstaView, Craft Ice) | French door / 4-door | Water fitting at the back, filter, dispenser, below the left door (dispenser reservoir line), freezer drawer floor, multi-purpose drawer | LG's left-door reservoir check applies to French-door models |
| LSXS, LSXC, LRSXS | Side-by-side | Dispenser, filter, freezer floor | |
| LRTLS, LTCS, LTNC | Top freezer | Water dripping from the ceiling or pooling in the fridge section (freezer drain) | LG has a top-freezer article for this |
| LRDCS, LBNC | Bottom freezer | Freezer floor ice, back |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual shows your filter type and where the filter sits.
Leak-location map
| Where the water is | Most likely cause (LG's lists) | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Back, bottom, or front (floor) | Water line not fully inserted at the fitting, or a damaged line | One-black-line check; service if cracked; close the saddle valve |
| Dispenser | Air in the line; ice melting in the bin; lever stuck | Purge 2–3 gallons; empty the bin; free and clean the lever |
| Water filter | Non-LG filter; not installed correctly | Genuine LG filter, turned clockwise until it locks |
| Inside, below the left French door | Dispenser water line loose at the reservoir fitting | Remove the lower door cover; push the line in |
| Bottom of the freezer (ice or water) | Freezer drain blocked by ice or debris | Full natural defrost, doors open, at least 24 hours |
| Multi-purpose drawer under the vegetable drawer (4-door) | Drain blocked; defrost water flowing into the fridge section | Same |
| Dripping from the ceiling of the fridge (top freezer) | Freezer drain blocked; defrost water overflowing | Same |
| Water on shelves, condensation | Open containers, hot food, door not shut, overfilling | Seal and cool food; close the door; wipe with a warm cloth |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Rule out the everyday causes. LG lists a slightly open container, hot food put in right away (it makes condensation), and a door not fully shut in summer. Store liquids sealed, cool hot food first, and make sure the door closes; wipe condensation with a warm dish towel.
- Don't overfill or rearrange carelessly. LG says too much food, or moving shelves so outside air gets in, can form condensation or frost.
- Check the water fitting at the back. Pull the fridge out and look where the line enters the fitting: one black line visible is correct; two means it isn't pushed in.
- Check the filter. Genuine LG? Turned clockwise until it locks?
- Check the dispenser. Is the icemaker off with ice still in the bin? Is the lever stuck in?
- Look in the freezer. Ice or water on the bottom means the drain is blocked (see the defrost steps below).
How to know it's fixed: the floor and drawer bottoms stay dry for 48 hours of normal use, and no new ice forms in the bottom of the freezer.
Leaking from the back, bottom, or front: the one-black-line test
LG says leaks at the back, bottom, or front may come from a water line that's not connected properly or is damaged.
- Pull the fridge away from the wall and find the water line connection at the back.
- Look for moisture where the line inserts into the fitting.
- Count the black lines marked around the tube. Only one should be visible. If you see two, gently press the collet and push the line into the fitting until only one line is partially visible.
- Fitting fine? Check the lines along the back for cracks, splits, or kinks. LG says damaged lines need repair service.
- Until a tech comes, turn off the home saddle valve to stop the leak.
Dispenser dripping or leaking
LG lists three causes: air in the water lines, melting ice in the ice bin, or a stuck dispenser lever.
- Air in the line. If water drips steadily, flush the air: dispense 2 to 3 gallons, then see if the leak comes back.
- Icemaker off? On models with an icemaker in the door, check whether it's on or off. LG says if it's off, you must empty the bucket, or the cubes will melt and leak out of the dispenser.
- Water or ice won't stop dispensing? The lever may be stuck in, usually from sugary-drink residue.
- Press and hold the Lock button until the lock icon lights; the dispenser won't operate.
- Pull out the lever and gently push and release it a few times quickly, or rub back and forth across the switch.
- Clean the lever with warm water and mild detergent. Don't wipe water over the control panel.
- Still stuck? LG says it needs repair service. Until then, turn off the saddle valve, turn the icemaker off, empty the bin, and keep the display locked.
Leaks from the water filter
LG says a filter leak usually means a non-LG filter or a filter not installed correctly.
- Use only genuine LG filters (LG sells them at lg.com/us/refrigerator-filters).
- To remove: turn it counterclockwise. To install: turn it clockwise until it locks.
- Never pull out or push in the filter without turning it first. LG warns that can damage the filter mount.
- If the mount (filter head or housing) is damaged, it's a replaceable part, usually a service job.
Water inside a French-door fridge, below the left door
LG says to check the dispenser water line behind the lower door cover:
- Remove the storage tray, then lift out the tray mount.
- Remove the lower door cover screw (Phillips), squeeze your fingers under the cover, and pull it off. Gently pull out the dispenser reservoir.
- Check where the line inserts into the reservoir fitting: one black line visible is right. If two show, push the line in.
- Put the reservoir back, line up the tab on the left of the cover, push it into place, and refit the tray mount and tray.
If it keeps leaking, LG says service is needed.
Ice in the bottom of the freezer, or water dripping from the ceiling
LG explains that the fridge periodically melts frost and drains the water into the drain pan. If the freezer drain is blocked by ice, frost, or debris, the defrost water can't drain. It refreezes in the bottom of the freezer, flows into the fridge section, or (on top-freezer models) drips from the ceiling or pools on the fridge floor. On 4-door models, LG says water or ice in the multi-purpose drawer under the vegetable drawer is the same symptom. Left alone, ice can block the cold air vents and hurt cooling.
LG's defrost steps:
- Move your food to a spare fridge, a cooler, or another cool place.
- Put dry towels around the base; melt water may reach the floor.
- Unplug the fridge and open both doors fully.
- Let the frost melt completely: at least 24 hours, about one day in summer and up to three days in winter.
- Wipe away the remaining moisture, then plug it back in. LG says it can take 24 to 48 hours to return to normal temperature. The melted water should drain normally into the drain tray once the ice is gone.
LG says don't use a hair dryer or hot water to speed it up. Hot air or boiling water can damage or deform the plastic inside.
Still leaking after a full defrost? LG says the drain may be blocked deep inside, or another part may be at fault. Contact LG support (or a pro out of warranty).
LG's prevention tips: store freezer food in sealed containers so debris can't get into the drain, and if the fridge has been in the same spot a long time, clean dust from the condenser area at the lower back.

LG refrigerator codes linked to leaks and ice
LG says you can force the display to show a stored code by pressing Freezer Temperature and Express Frz together for at least 3 seconds. For the fault codes below, LG says request service.
| Code | LG's meaning | Link to leaks |
|---|---|---|
| dH (or FdH / dHF) | Defrost fault: the defrost sensor didn't rise more than 5°C within 80 minutes of defrost starting | LG lists a broken defrost heater or thermal fuse, faulty heating relays, or a clogged drain |
| dS | Defrost sensor fault | The evaporator may block with ice |
| FF | Freezer fan error | Fans can stall when iced |
| gF | Water flow sensor | Closed water tap, kinked hose, or wrong water pressure |
| CH / CL | Refrigerant leak, high or low side | Sealed system, pro only |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| dH | Defrost heater, thermal fuse, relay, or drain | Full natural defrost | Heater / fuse / board | Pro only |
| dS | Defrost sensor | — | Sensor replacement | Pro only |
| FF | Freezer fan (often iced) | Full natural defrost | Fan motor or defrost system | Moderate |
| gF | Flow sensor / water supply | Unplug 60 s; open the tap fully; straighten the hose; check pressure | Flow sensor or valve | Easy |
| CH / CL | Sealed system | — | Refrigerant repair | Pro only |

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker, and close the water supply valve. Move food to a cooler.
1. Ice in the freezer or water from the ceiling returns after a full defrost
Likely causes: a drain blocked deep inside, a failed defrost heater or thermal fuse, a defrost sensor, or a drain tube problem. A dH code supports this.
Signs: clear ice (refrozen water, not white frost) in the bottom of the freezer; water returns within days or weeks of a 24-hour defrost.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (rear freezer cover off).
Call a pro if: the fridge is in year 1, or you'd need to test heaters, fuses, and sensors.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost drain tube | Carries defrost water to the pan | Advanced |
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator | Advanced |
| Defrost sensor | Tells the board when to stop defrosting | Advanced |
| Drain pan | Holds defrost water until it evaporates | Moderate |
2. Water at the back or bottom with the fittings pushed in
Likely causes: a cracked or split water line, a leaking water inlet valve, or a damaged filter head / housing.
Signs: water at the back bottom with only one black line showing; drips with the dispenser idle; leaks at the filter with a genuine, locked filter.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (rear cover off; water off).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water inlet valve | Opens for the dispenser and icemaker | Moderate |
| Water filter housing / head | Holds the filter | Moderate |
| Water filter | Filters water; a bad seal leaks | Easy |
3. Water from the ice maker area or out of the dispenser chute
Likely causes: ice melting in the bin (icemaker off), a stuck lever, or an icemaker fill problem.
DIY difficulty: Easy for the bin and lever; moderate for the icemaker.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Icemaker | Makes and ejects ice | Moderate |
| Dispenser lever / switch | Starts water or ice | Moderate |

Prevent the next leak
- Use genuine LG filters and turn them clockwise until they lock; never push or pull without turning.
- Purge 2–3 gallons after a filter change.
- Empty the ice bin whenever you turn the icemaker off.
- Store freezer food in sealed containers so debris can't reach the drain (LG).
- Clean dust from the condenser area at the lower back if the fridge hasn't moved in a long time (LG).
- Cool hot food first and keep doors fully shut.
- Wipe sugary spills off the dispenser lever.
What LG's warranty covers on a refrigerator
LG's US refrigerator limited warranty (see Sources):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Years 1–5 | Sealed system and compressor (parts and labor) | LG |
| Years 6–10 | Linear / inverter compressor (part only) | You |
What this means for a leak: the water valve, filter head, drain parts, defrost heater, and sensors are covered only in year 1. After that, you pay parts and labor. Water filters are a maintenance item, and LG's fixes for a water line not pushed in or a non-LG filter are installation and use issues, not defects. A CH/CL refrigerant leak inside 5 years is sealed-system coverage. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Is it a leak? Run LG's checks and the 24-hour defrost, then watch for 48 hours.
- Warranty: year 1, LG's 5-year sealed-system term, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech will clear the drain or only replace parts.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Kenmore-labeled and other-brand parts in the same results were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: while you wait for a technician, don't chip at freezer ice with anything sharp; you can puncture a refrigerant line. LG's answer is time: doors open, power off.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ water-line kit, + cabinet work if it won't fit the same opening)
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace. Count food loss and floor damage from a leak that keeps returning.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG French-door fridge leaks below the left door. Behind the lower door cover, the dispenser line shows two black lines at the reservoir fitting; pushing it in fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG bottom-freezer keeps getting ice in the freezer and shows dH after a full defrost. A tech replaces the defrost heater and clears the drain: R = $320; N = $2,200; no other repairs.
320 ÷ 2,200 = 15%; life used 6 ÷ 15 = 40%; repeat check 15% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old LG side-by-side leaks, cools poorly, and shows CL (refrigerant leak), out of coverage: R = $1,100; N = $1,700. It had a $350 icemaker last year.
1,100 ÷ 1,700 = 65%; life used 13 ÷ 15 = 87%; repeat check (1,100 + 350) ÷ 1,700 = 85% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system problem out of coverage, repeated icemaker and drain failures, rust or cracked liners, or a fridge past about 15 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fitting, a filter, a drain clear, a valve, or a heater; the fridge is in year 1; or it's a sealed-system problem inside LG's 5-year coverage.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A plumber. If the home saddle valve or the house supply is leaking, or water pressure is the problem behind a gF code.
4. DIY with the right part. Filters and water-line fittings are DIY-friendly. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Will you clear the drain and test the defrost heater, thermal fuse, and sensor, or only replace a part?
- Is the water line damaged, or just not pushed in?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude water damage, water lines, filters, and ice makers, and a fridge that's already leaking is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my LG refrigerator leaking water?
LG lists a water line not fully pushed into its fitting (two black lines showing instead of one), a damaged line, air in the dispenser line, melting ice in the bin, a stuck lever, a non-LG or badly installed filter, and a blocked freezer drain.
Why is there ice in the bottom of my LG freezer?
LG says the freezer drain is blocked by ice or debris, so defrost water refreezes instead of reaching the drain tray. Unplug it and leave the doors open until the ice melts naturally: about a day in summer, up to three in winter.
Can I use a hair dryer to defrost my LG refrigerator?
No. LG says hot air or hot water can damage or deform the plastic parts. Let it melt naturally.
Why is water dripping from the ceiling of my LG top-freezer fridge?
LG says the freezer drain is blocked and defrost water is overflowing into the fridge section. Do the full 24-hour defrost; if it continues, the drain may be blocked deep inside.
Why is my LG French-door fridge leaking below the left door?
LG says check the dispenser water line behind the lower door cover. Only one black line should show at the reservoir fitting; push it in if you see two.
Why is my LG water dispenser dripping?
LG says air in the line (dispense 2 to 3 gallons), ice melting in the bin when the icemaker is off (empty it), or a stuck lever (lock the panel, work and clean the lever).
Does LG's warranty cover a leaking refrigerator?
Defective parts are covered with labor in year 1. Sealed-system problems are covered for 5 years. Filters and installation issues aren't defects.
How much does it cost to fix an LG refrigerator leak?
Often nothing. Fixr puts leak repairs at $60 to $250 depending on whether the water is inside or underneath. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, LG drain tubes were listed at about $18 to $104 and inlet valves at about $44 to $228.
