Quick answer

LG says most dishwasher leaks come from installation, detergent, or maintenance, not a broken part. LG's help library lists these fixes, cheapest first:

  1. Level the dishwasher. LG says if it isn't level, about a gallon of water can pour to one side and out the door.
  2. Detergent. Use one pod, or fill the dispenser only to the 15 or 25 line. Never use hand dishwashing liquid; its suds push water out.
  3. Door gasket. Wipe off food and buildup. A torn gasket needs service.
  4. Spray arms. Make sure they spin freely and nothing tall blocks them or sprays water at the door.
  5. Underneath: the 90° elbow and supply line. LG's paper-towel test: wipe the elbow and the supply line with a dry paper towel and see which one gets wet. LG suggests Teflon tape on the elbow threads, hand-tightening and then snugging with a wrench, and replacing a stripped elbow (they're sold at home improvement stores).

AE or E1 on the display? LG says that's a leak that tripped the float switch in the base. Fix the cause above, then dry the base pan: breaker off, remove the two kick-plate screws, dry the pan, leave the kick plate off 24–48 hours, switch the breaker off and on to reset, and run an empty cycle. If AE / E1 comes back with one pod and a level unit, LG says a technician is needed.

Still leaking? LG says to request service. LG Canada notes that water on the floor while the dishwasher isn't running points to the inlet line, and that a unit that floods while idle may need an inlet valve.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Dry everything, then run a short cycle and watch with a flashlight: the door edges, the bottom of the door, the kick plate, and the cabinet under the sink.
  2. Check the water level. LG's leak video says to look at the water level after the initial fill. If it looks too high, the dishwasher may be tilted, or the inlet valve may not be closing.
  3. Detergent: one pod, or the dispenser filled only to the 15 or 25 line. If someone used hand dish soap, run an empty rinse and wipe out the suds before the next load.
  4. Gasket: run a finger around it and wipe off food and residue. Look for tears (LG says a torn seal needs service).
  5. Spray arms: spin each by hand. Move tall pans or cutting boards so they don't block an arm or deflect spray onto the door.
  6. Level: check side to side and front to back. LG's video shows the leveling feet are reached with the door open about 45–60° and the lower cover removed.
  7. Paper-towel test under the sink and at the kick plate: wipe the 90° elbow, then the supply line, with a dry paper towel. Whichever gets wet is the leak.
  8. Water on the floor while it's off? LG Canada says that points to the inlet line. Shut off the water and call for service if it floods while idle.

How to know it's fixed: a full cycle with a dry paper towel under the door and at the elbow stays dry, and no AE / E1 appears.

What LG says vs. what LG says (and an outside code list)

LG's own pages don't agree on how much of this is DIY, and an open code dataset reads E1 differently:

LG USA help library: "Troubleshooting Leaking Issues"LG USA: "AE & E1 Error Code"LG Canada: "Water leaking underneath"Non-OEM: ApplianceDB open dataset
A leak at the supply connectionDIY: dry paper-towel test; Teflon tape on the elbow; hand-tighten, then firmly with a wrench; replace a stripped elbow from a home improvement storeNot coveredIf water appears when the dishwasher isn't running, suspect the inlet line; if it floods while idle, shut off the water and LG will dispatch a technician (possibly an inlet valve)—
What AE / E1 means—A leak that activated the float switch in the base—E1 = flow switch
When to callIf the leak continues after these steps, request serviceIf AE / E1 shows when using one pod, a technician is neededFlooding while idle—

Our take: the elbow fix is fair game for most owners: water off, Teflon tape, hand-tight plus a snug turn. A leak from the supply line or valve itself, or water on the floor while the dishwasher is off, is a pro job, as LG Canada says. For the code, trust LG's meaning (leak / float switch) over the outside dataset; LG's float sits in the base pan, and drying the pan is LG's own reset step.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Switch off the breaker. Turn off the water supply under the sink. Lay towels down.

1. Leak at the door edge or corners after cleaning and leveling

Likely cause: a torn or worn door seal or tub gasket. LG's video also lists distortion at the top or corners of the door, which is a service job, not a seal swap.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Door seal / tub gasketSeals the door to the tubModerate
Door vent gasketSeals the vent in the doorModerate

2. Tub overfills, or water appears when the dishwasher is off

Likely cause: the water inlet valve isn't closing fully, or the supply line is leaking. LG Canada says a leak while the dishwasher isn't running points to the inlet line, and that flooding while idle may need an inlet valve.

DIY difficulty: Moderate → Advanced.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty

3. Wet drain hose, or water at the back during drain

Likely cause: a cracked drain hose or a loose hose connector. LG's video lists the inlet and outlet hose connections among leak points.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain hose / connectorCarries wastewater to the sink drain or disposerModerate

4. AE / E1 keeps coming back with one pod and a level unit

Likely cause: a leak inside the base: the sump gasket, a check valve, an internal hose, or a drain or circulation pump. LG says a technician is needed at this point.

DIY difficulty: Advanced.

Recalls

We searched for LG dishwasher recalls on 2026-10-30. Some third-party repair blogs describe a recent LG dishwasher recall for a fire hazard (not a leak). We couldn't confirm it on cpsc.gov this session: CPSC's site search didn't return an LG dishwasher recall, and CPSC's dishwasher recall list blocked our fetch. So we don't repeat any model list here. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls or with LG before paying for a repair. Recall repairs are free.

What LG's warranty covers on a dishwasher

LG's US dishwasher warranty cards (they vary by model; your card or LG's site has yours):

Period (from original retail purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (some models 2 years)Parts and labor on defective partsLG
Up to 5 yearsMain control board and racks (parts only)You
Up to 10 yearsDirect Drive motor (parts only)You
Limited lifetimeStainless steel tub and door liner (parts only)You

What this means for a leak: a defective door seal, inlet valve, hose, or pump in year 1 (or year 2 on 2-year models) is a warranty repair. After that, a leaking stainless tub or door liner may still be covered as a part, so you'd pay labor only: check before you pay. Detergent problems, a dishwasher that isn't level, and a loose or untaped elbow are installation or use issues, not defects. Water damage to floors and cabinets isn't something the appliance warranty pays for. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 (or 2) parts and labor; lifetime tub and door liner parts; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: level, one pod, gasket, spray arms, elbow tape, base pan dried.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and exactly where the leak was found.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG-format part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "lg dishwasher …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Most listings aren't brand-labeled, so confirm the fit with your model number. Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, Frigidaire, Bosch, and other brands' parts, freezer gaskets, and unrelated sensors in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dishwashers in general unless marked, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): An LG dishwasher shows AE after a new floor raised the back. You level it, dry the base pan for 48 hours, and reset the breaker. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old LG drips under the sink. The paper towel shows the elbow is fine but the supply line is wet, and the tub overfills. A tech replaces the inlet valve: R = $190; N = $850.
190 ÷ 850 = 22%; life used 4 ÷ 10 = 40% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old LG keeps throwing AE with one pod. The tech finds a leaking sump and quotes the sump and a circulation pump, a year after a drain pump ($250): R = $460; N = $850.
460 ÷ 850 = 54% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 10 ÷ 10 = 100%; repeat check (460 + 250) ÷ 850 = 84% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a leak inside the base on an older unit, repeat AE / E1 after repairs, or existing floor damage.
Tips toward repairing: it's a seal, hose, elbow, or valve; the dishwasher is under about 7 years old; or the part is covered.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans usually exclude water damage to floors and cabinets, and problems from installation.

FAQ

Why is my LG dishwasher leaking from the bottom of the door?
LG's top causes: the dishwasher isn't level, too much or the wrong detergent, buildup on the door gasket, or a blocked spray arm sending water at the door.

What does AE or E1 mean on an LG dishwasher?
LG says it's a leak that activated the float switch in the base. Fix the cause, then dry the base pan with the breaker off and the kick plate removed for 24–48 hours.

How do I reset an LG dishwasher after an AE error?
LG says switch the breaker off and back on after drying the base pan, then run an empty cycle. If AE returns with one pod and a level unit, a technician is needed.

Why is my LG dishwasher leaking underneath?
Start with the 90° elbow and the supply line: wipe each with a dry paper towel. LG suggests Teflon tape and a snug wrench turn on the elbow, or a new elbow if it's stripped.

Why is there water under my LG dishwasher when it's not running?
LG Canada says that points to the inlet line. If it floods while idle, shut off the water; it may need an inlet valve.

Can I use dish soap in an LG dishwasher?
No. LG says never use hand dishwashing liquid; it makes suds that leak out. Use one pod, or fill to the 15 or 25 line.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking LG dishwasher?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, LG-format door seals and tub gaskets were listed at about $43 to $86 and inlet valves at about $63 to $132. Fixr says a leaking dishwasher costs about $200 to fix on average.

Should I replace a leaking LG dishwasher?
Rarely for a seal, elbow, hose, or valve. Consider it for a leak inside the base on an older unit, or AE that keeps returning after repairs.
