Quick answer

Most Whirlpool dishwashers that "won't start" have nothing broken. Whirlpool's own help pages list these checks:

  1. Door latched. Press the door firmly shut; on most models you'll hear a click. If it isn't fully latched, the dishwasher won't start or resume. A lower rack put in backward can stop the door from latching.
  2. Control Lock. If buttons make the lock light flash three times, the controls are locked. The door still opens. Hold the Lock button to turn it off (see the side-by-side table for how long).
  3. Sleep or standby. An idle dishwasher goes to sleep. Open and close the door, or press Start (or Start/Resume).
  4. Delay Wash. A delay countdown means it will start later. Press Cancel/Drain to cancel the delay.
  5. Water. The valve under the sink must be turned fully counterclockwise (open). If the dishwasher doesn't detect water, the cycle won't start.
  6. Power. Check that it's plugged in, or that the breaker for a hard-wired dishwasher hasn't tripped.
  7. Reset. Unplug it or switch off its breaker, then turn the power back on. Whirlpool's pages give 30 seconds or about 1 minute; one minute covers both.

If those don't fix it, the parts that usually fail are the door latch or door switch, a thermal fuse, the user interface (buttons), the control board, or the pump motor.

Which Whirlpool dishwasher do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label, usually on the edge of the tub or door frame when the door is open. The right latch, switch, fuse, and board depend on your exact model.

TypeModel often starts with (check label)Where the controls areNot-starting notes
Built-in, front controlsOften WDF (check label)Front of the doorButtons visible; lock and delay lights easy to see
Built-in, top or hidden controlsOften WDT (check label)Top edge of the doorControls only visible with the door open, so a lock or delay light is easy to miss; your manual says when to close the door after pressing Start
PortableVaries (check label)Front or topNeeds its faucet connection and power cord connected

Whirlpool says features vary by model; your Owner's Manual lists how your Lock, Sleep, and Delay work. Our Whirlpool dishwasher not draining and Whirlpool dishwasher not cleaning guides cover the next problems in the cycle.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Any lights? Open and close the door, then press Start. No lights at all = power or a dead board or fuse. Lights but no cycle = lock, latch, delay, or water.
  2. Lock light: press a button. Three flashes = Control Lock is on.
  3. Delay: look for a countdown or a Delay light; press Cancel/Drain.
  4. Latch: close the door firmly and listen for the click. Pull out the lower rack and make sure it's facing the right way.
  5. Water: turn the valve under the sink fully counterclockwise.
  6. Breaker: check the dishwasher's breaker (and a GFCI outlet if it plugs in under the sink).
  7. Reset: power off for 1 minute.

How to know it's fixed: the cycle starts and you hear water coming in within a minute or so.

What Whirlpool's own pages say vs. each other

Whirlpool publishes more than one "not starting" page, and they don't agree on two details:

Whirlpool Product Help: "Not Starting or Operating - Dishwasher"Whirlpool Product Help: "Dishwasher Not Starting or Not Operating"Whirlpool Canada: "Dishwasher Not Starting?"
How long to cut power for a reset30 seconds (unplug or breaker)Press Cancel, then unplug or switch off the breaker for about 1 minuteAt least one minute
How long to hold Lock to unlockNot stated; refers to the Owner's ManualNot stated; refers to the Owner's Manual and "Using Control Lock"Press and hold Lock for four seconds (the same page's tip also says the button reads "Hold 3 sec")
Sleep modeOpen or close the door, or press StartSome models have sleep modePress Start/Resume or Cancel; you may need to open and close the door first
Door latchPress firmly; listen for the clickA backward lower rack can stop it latchingA backward lower rack is a common reason

Our take: cut the power for a full minute (it satisfies all three), and hold the Lock button for at least 4 seconds (it covers a 3-second button too). Your Owner's Manual is the final word for your model.

Recalls

We checked the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. The most relevant Whirlpool dishwasher recall is:

CPSC also lists older Whirlpool dishwasher actions from 1988, 1989, and 1996 for specific older models. If your model and serial match a recall, use the recall remedy, not a paid repair. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per Whirlpool's US Major Appliance Limited Warranty (W11349438A, see Sources), plus an older Whirlpool dishwasher warranty sheet:

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Factory-specified replacement parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanshipWhirlpool
After year 1Only the components your model's warranty sheet lists. Older Whirlpool dishwasher sheets added parts-only coverage for the wash module (year 2) and electronic controls (years 2โ€“5)You pay labor on parts-only coverage

What this means for a dishwasher that won't start: in year 1, a failed latch, switch, fuse, interface, board, or motor is covered. If your model's sheet includes electronic controls coverage, a board or interface may still be a parts-only claim in years 2โ€“5. Whirlpool excludes in-home instruction, so a visit that only turns off Control Lock or cancels a delay isn't a defect repair. You need proof of purchase.

โ†’ Whirlpool Customer eXperience Center 1-866-698-2538 ยท Whirlpool: appliance warranty coverage

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1; any electronic controls parts-only coverage on your sheet; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: check the 2005 wash-motor recall, then search cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: latch and rack, Control Lock, sleep, delay, water valve, breaker, reset.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (HomeGuide says dishwashers last 8โ€“15 years; use 10 if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. Fixr adds that if a dishwasher is ten years or older, replacing the whole unit may be the more economical option. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Whirlpool top-control dishwasher won't start; the lock light flashes three times when a button is pressed. The owner holds Lock for 4 seconds and it starts. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old Whirlpool dishwasher won't click shut; the rack is the right way round. A tech replaces the door latch: R = $150; N = $900.
150 รท 900 = 17%; life used 4 รท 10 = 40% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Whirlpool dishwasher needs a control board ($450 quote) a year after a pump motor ($400): N = $800.
450 รท 800 = 56% (inside the 50โ€“60% second-quote zone); life used 11 รท 10 = 110%; repeat check (450 + 400) รท 800 = 106% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board or motor on an older dishwasher, repeat repairs, or parts no longer sold for your model.
Tips toward repairing: it's a latch, switch, fuse, or interface; the dishwasher is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1 (or within an electronic-controls coverage period).

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb for appliances. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

FAQ

Why won't my Whirlpool dishwasher start?
Whirlpool's help pages list a door that isn't fully latched (a backward lower rack can cause it), Control Lock, Sleep mode, a Delay Wash countdown, a closed water valve, and a tripped breaker.

How do I reset my Whirlpool dishwasher?
Cut the power by unplugging it or switching off its breaker. One Whirlpool page says 30 seconds; another says press Cancel and wait about 1 minute. One minute covers both.

How do I turn off Control Lock on a Whirlpool dishwasher?
Press and hold the Lock button. Whirlpool Canada says four seconds; the button on many models reads "Hold 3 sec." Holding for 4 seconds covers both.

Why does the light flash three times when I press a button?
The controls are locked. The door still opens, but buttons won't work until you turn Control Lock off.

How do I cancel a delayed start?
Press Cancel/Drain, then Start/Resume to start the cycle now.

Does a Whirlpool dishwasher need water to start?
Yes. Whirlpool says if water isn't detected the cycle won't start. Turn the valve under the sink fully counterclockwise.

How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool dishwasher that won't start?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool door latches listed at about $21 to $141. Fixr puts a "will not start" repair at $100 to $600.
