LG Dishwasher Not Draining or OE Error? Filter, Drain Hose Height, Air Gap, Knockout Plug and Cancel & Drain Fixes — Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
OE means "not draining." LG says the OE code shows when the dishwasher detects a drain problem, most often food clogs or an installation issue. Both are usually free to fix.
LG's steps, cheapest first:
- Clear the tub and clean the filter. Remove the lower rack and any large debris. Turn the mesh filter counterclockwise, lift out the filter parts, and rinse them under warm running water with a soft brush. Reinstall and turn clockwise until it clicks.
- Check the drain hose under the sink. It's a ridged white, opaque, or gray hose. Make sure nothing is crushing or kinking it.
- Clean the air gap (if you have one on the sink). Turn the dishwasher off, remove the cover and cap, and clear debris with a toothpick or brush.
- New disposal or new dishwasher? The disposal's knockout plug may still be in place. LG says an installer or plumber must remove it.
- Check the installation. LG says the drain hose must be no longer than 12 feet (no extensions), and its end must be 12 to 40 inches above the floor (base of the dishwasher).
- Force a drain. Use Cancel & Drain (press and hold two buttons together; which two varies by model). No Cancel & Drain? Start a cycle, wait 45 seconds, then power off. LG says the first 45 seconds of any cycle is drain-only.
- Test it. Run a Heavy Duty or Normal cycle with no dishes and no detergent.
If OE keeps coming back after those steps, LG says a part may be faulty and the dishwasher needs a repair. The usual suspects are the drain pump, a clogged drain hose or check valve, or, less often, the control board.
Repair or replace? Most LG drain problems cost nothing to fix. A drain pump is usually worth replacing on a dishwasher under about 8 years old. See the calculator below.

Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Water left after a power cut or a tripped breaker; OE on the first cycle after install; new disposal | Interrupted cycle, hose too high / long / kinked, knockout plug left in | ✅ Free fix. Restart; correct the hose; remove the plug |
| OE with dirty water; clogged filter; crushed hose; dirty air gap | Food clog or drain-path blockage | ✅ Free to cheap. Clean the filter, hose path, and air gap |
| Filter, hose, air gap and sink all clear, Cancel & Drain doesn't empty it, OE keeps returning | Drain pump, check valve, internal hose, control | 🔧 Usually worth repairing under about 8 years old; ♻️ lean toward replacing if it's a board on an older dishwasher |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Turn the dishwasher off before cleaning the air gap or internal parts. LG warns about electric shock or malfunction otherwise. For anything beyond the filter, switch off the breaker too.
- Hot water and parts. LG says wait about 30 minutes after the dishwasher stops before removing the filter, because the tub is hot right after a cycle.
- Sharp edges. LG warns the stainless steel filter has sharp edges. Handle it carefully.
- Water on the floor or an AE / E1 (leak) code. Turn it off and find the leak before running it again.
- You smell burning, see damaged wiring, or the breaker trips again. Stop and call a qualified technician.
- The dishwasher is still under warranty (LG: 1 year parts and labor on most models, 2 years on some). Use LG service before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG dishwasher do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label along the side edge of the inner door or tub opening. You need it to order parts, find your filter layout, and check warranty status.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Filter | Drain notes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front-control (QuadWash and others) | Often LDF / LDFN / LDFC (check label) | 3-stage: mesh, stainless (STS), and outer filter | OE; Cancel & Drain on many | LG says rinse the filter after each load for best results |
| Top-control (QuadWash / TrueSteam) | Often LDT / LDTS / LDTH / LDP (check label) | 3-stage on most | OE; Cancel & Drain on many | Same filter steps |
| Models with a self-cleaning filter | Varies | No removable 3-stage filter | LG says the self-cleaning system grinds food before it drains | Filter cleaning not needed |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. LG says the look and position of filters vary slightly by model; your owner's manual has the exact steps.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Was the power interrupted? LG says if water remains when you open the door, the power may have cut out mid-cycle (an outage or a tripped breaker). When the dishwasher starts again, it drains first. Press Power and restart.
- Clean the filter (LG's steps). Remove the lower rack. On many models, turn the bottom spray arm so the wider "V" faces the front. Turn the inner (mesh) filter counterclockwise and lift out the mesh, stainless, and outer filters. Separate the cylinder-shaped filters and brush them gently under warm running water; use non-abrasive materials. Reassemble and turn clockwise until it clicks. LG says a filter that's put back wrong lowers cleaning performance.
- Hose under the sink. Look for the ridged hose (white, opaque, or gray). Move anything pushing on it and straighten bends.
- Air gap. Turn the dishwasher off. Remove the air gap cover and the plastic cap under it. Clear debris with a toothpick or brush. LG suggests using a turkey baster to flush it with hot water. Refit the cap and cover.
- Disposal. Make sure the sink and disposal drain normally.
- First cycle after install? LG says OE on the first cycle points to an installation problem: the hose is kinked, too high, or too long. That's for the installer to correct.
- New disposal? The dishwasher inlet on the disposal may still have its knockout plug. LG's steps show it removed with a hammer and screwdriver; LG says an installer or plumber should do it.
- Force a drain. Cancel & Drain (two buttons held together, for example Delicate + Dual Control on some models). Or start any cycle, wait 45 seconds, and power off.
- Test. Run Heavy Duty or Normal, empty, with no detergent, to flush it and test the drain.
How to know it's fixed: the test cycle finishes with no OE and only a little water left around the filter, and the sink stays clear. LG then suggests a full clean: filter, spray arms, and an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner.
LG dishwasher codes linked to "not draining"
LG's US help library lists these. Codes vary by model.
| Code | LG's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OE | Drain (outlet) error: water isn't draining | Filter, hose, air gap, knockout plug, hose height and length; Cancel & Drain; request repair if it returns |

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Breaker off. Wait about 30 minutes for the tub to cool. Bail out water with a cup and sponge. Towels down before you disconnect any hose.
1. Dirty water over the filter; OE; odor
Likely causes: a clogged 3-stage filter or debris in the sump. LG notes leftover food in the filter can also cause odor and drainage problems.
DIY difficulty: Easy.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Filter assembly (mesh, stainless, outer) | Catches food before the pump | Easy |
| Sump cover / sump parts | Hold the filter and route water to the pump | Moderate |
2. OE on the first cycle, or water backs up from the sink
Likely causes: a kinked or crushed hose, a hose end outside 12–40 inches above the floor, a hose longer than 12 feet or with an extension, a knockout plug left in the disposal, or a clogged air gap. LG's Korean-market article on the same US help site adds that a hose end set too low can let sewer odor and sink water flow back.
DIY difficulty: Easy to straighten; Moderate to re-route or replace the hose.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain hose | Carries water to the sink drain, air gap, or disposal | Moderate |
3. Hum but no drain; Cancel & Drain does nothing; OE keeps returning
Likely causes: a jammed or failed drain pump (ApplianceDB's top OE component), or a stuck check valve.
Signs: filter, hose, air gap and sink are all clear; you hear a hum, or nothing, at drain time.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (pump); Moderate (check valve).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pushes water out through the hose | Advanced |
| Check valve | Stops drained water flowing back in | Moderate |
4. No drain sound at all; display errors
Likely causes: the control board (main or display) or wiring to the pump.
DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first before buying a board. LG's warranty covers the main control board as a part for up to 5 years on many models.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic control board | Runs the cycle and powers the pump | Advanced; diagnose first |

Prevent it next time
- Clean the filter often. LG says after each load for best results, at least monthly in hard-water areas; its OE guidance mentions every one to two weeks.
- Scrape large food off dishes before loading.
- Keep the hose clear under the sink: don't store heavy items on it.
- After any plumbing or disposal work, check the knockout plug and hose height.
- Run a cleaning cycle now and then: an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner (LG).

What LG's warranty covers on a dishwasher
LG's US dishwasher warranty cards (they vary by model; your card or LG's site has yours):
| Period (from original retail purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (some models 2 years) | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Up to 5 years | Main control board and racks (parts only) | You |
| Up to 10 years | Direct Drive motor (parts only) | You |
| Limited lifetime | Stainless steel tub and door liner (parts only) | You |
What this means for a dishwasher that won't drain: a failed drain pump or board in year 1 (or year 2 on 2-year models) is a warranty repair. After that, the main control board may still be covered as a part, so you'd pay only labor; the drain pump isn't on the extended-parts list. Cleaning the filter, clearing an air gap, removing a knockout plug, and correcting hose installation are maintenance or installation, not defects. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 (or 2) parts and labor; 5-year main board parts; plus retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: power restart, filter, hose, air gap, sink and disposal, knockout plug, hose height and length, Cancel & Drain, empty test cycle.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the tech checked the hose height and knockout plug first.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dishwashers in general unless noted, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech whether the pump hums or is silent, whether Cancel & Drain empties the tub, whether the sink drains, and whether a disposal was recently installed.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses or install kit)
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A new LG dishwasher shows OE on its very first cycle. The installer finds the drain hose kinked behind the cabinet and the disposal's knockout plug still in place, and fixes both. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old LG dishwasher hums and shows OE; the filter, hose, and air gap are clear. A tech replaces the drain pump: R = $280; N = $900; no other repairs.
280 ÷ 900 = 31%; life used 5 ÷ 11 = 45%; repeat check 31% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old LG dishwasher needs a main control board (past its 5-year parts coverage) after a drain pump last year for $260. R = $450; N = $900.
450 ÷ 900 = 50%; life used 10 ÷ 11 = 91%; repeat check (450 + 260) ÷ 900 = 79% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board on an older dishwasher, a second big repair in about 2 years, rusted racks, or a leaking tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, hose, check valve, or pump; the dishwasher is under about 8 years old; the board is inside LG's parts coverage; or the real fix was the hose, plug, or air gap.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

2. The installer or a plumber. For OE on the first cycle, a knockout plug, hose height or length, or a clogged sink drain.
3. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them about the OE code, whether it hums, whether Cancel & Drain works, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
4. DIY with the right part. Filters, hoses, and check valves are common DIY jobs. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the filter, hose height and length, knockout plug, and air gap first?
- Is it the pump, the valve, or the control? How did you confirm it?
- Is the board covered as a part under LG's warranty?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude clogs and installation problems. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
What does OE mean on an LG dishwasher?
OE means the dishwasher isn't draining properly. LG says it's most often a food clog or an installation issue such as a kinked hose.
How do I clear the OE code on my LG dishwasher?
Clean the filter, straighten the drain hose, clean the air gap, check for a disposal knockout plug, then run an empty Heavy Duty or Normal cycle. If OE returns, LG says the unit needs repair service.
How do I force my LG dishwasher to drain?
Use Cancel & Drain (hold the two buttons your model uses, for example Delicate + Dual Control). Without that option, start a cycle, wait 45 seconds, and power it off; LG says the first 45 seconds of every cycle is drain-only.
How high should an LG dishwasher drain hose be?
LG says the hose end must be 12 to 40 inches above the floor, and the hose no longer than 12 feet, with no extension.
How often should I clean my LG dishwasher filter?
LG says after each load for best results, and at least monthly in hard-water areas. Some LG models have a self-cleaning filter that doesn't need it.
Why is there water in my LG dishwasher after a power outage?
LG says if the power cut out mid-cycle, water can stay in the tub. When you start the dishwasher again, it drains first.
Is it worth fixing an LG dishwasher that won't drain?
Usually. Most causes are free, and a drain pump is a common, moderate repair. A board on an older dishwasher leans toward replacing, unless it's still inside LG's parts coverage. Use the calculator above.
