Bosch Dishwasher Leaking? E15 Water in the Base, Suds, Door Seal, Vent, Hoses, Install β Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
E15 on the display? Bosch says E15 means a safety switch found water in the base of the dishwasher and the leakage protection system has activated. Bosch's instruction: turn off the water inflow and contact Bosch Customer Support at 1-800-944-2904.
Water on the floor, no code? Bosch's manuals list four causes, cheapest first:
- Suds. The wrong detergent (hand dish soap) makes suds that push water out. Newer manuals add overfilled or spilled rinse aid. Use dishwasher detergent only, wipe up rinse aid, and if suds persist, Bosch says add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the bottom and run a cycle.
- Door seal out of its track. Push it back in so it's securely inserted. Bosch also says a soiled door seal may not seal: wipe it with a damp cloth.
- Blocked condensation vent. Clear it, and move tall items like trays away from the vent.
- Installation. Bosch says have the install checked (water supply, drain, leveling, plumbing) by qualified or authorized service personnel.
Still leaking? The usual parts are a door or tub seal, the water inlet valve or inlet tubing, a drain hose, or a pump seal. Bosch's manuals say not to repair the dishwasher yourself during warranty: unauthorized work may void it.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Leak after using dish soap or spilling rinse aid; door seal out of its track or dirty; vent blocked by a tray; dishwasher not level | Detergent, seal seating, loading, install | β Free fix |
| E15 that returns after the floor is dry; water at a hose; leak at the door with the seal seated; drips with the dishwasher off | Door or tub seal, inlet valve, hose, pump seal | π§ Usually worth repairing; free in year 1 |
| Rusted-through tub or door (check Bosch's lifetime coverage first), a pump plus a control repair, or a dishwasher 10+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Major parts or general wear | β»οΈ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new one |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- E15 is showing. Bosch says turn off the water inflow and call Bosch. Don't keep running cycles.
- Water has reached an outlet, a junction box, or the cabinet floor near wiring. Switch off the dishwasher's breaker first.
- Water is spraying or running from the supply line or valve under the sink. Close the shutoff (usually under the kitchen sink, Bosch's manual says) and call a plumber if the valve itself leaks.
- You'd need to pull the dishwasher out or open the base. That's pro work, and Bosch's manuals say unauthorized repairs may void the warranty.
- The dishwasher is in year 1. Bosch covers the entire appliance, parts and labor.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Bosch dishwasher do you have?
Bosch says the model and serial number are on the label on the edge of the dishwasher door. You need it to download your manual, order the right seal or hose, and check warranty status.
| Series (US) | Model prefix (examples) | Leak protection | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 / 300 Series | Often SHE or SHS (check label) | E15 on the display | Same base-pan switch idea |
| 500 / 800 Series | Often SHP, SHX, or SHPM (check label) | E15 on the display | Newer manuals add the rinse-aid suds cause |
| Benchmark | Often SHV or SHP (check label) | E15 on the display |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Find your manual by entering your model number on Bosch's US owner-support site.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Read the display. E15 = water in the base. Turn off the water and follow Bosch's instruction to call. Other codes (E16βE18 water inflow, E24/E25 drain) are covered in our Bosch dishwasher not draining guide.
- What soap went in? Hand dish soap, a detergent overdose, or rinse aid spilled into the tub causes suds. Bosch: don't overfill the rinse aid dispenser; wipe spills with a damp cloth.
- Look at the door seal. Run a finger around it. Any section pulled out of its track? Press it back in. Food on the seal? Wipe it with a damp cloth.
- Check the vent. A sheet pan or tray on the bottom rack can block the condensation vent and push steam and water out. Move it.
- Check loading. Bosch's troubleshooting says items touching the door can stop a cycle; anything that sprays water at the door seal can push water out.
- Under the sink. Check the inlet and drain hose connections you can see for drips.
- Level. Bosch's older manual lists leveling among the installation checks for a leak, and Bosch's troubleshooting page says an unlevel install can keep the AutoAir door from working properly.
How to know it's fixed: run a normal cycle with dishwasher detergent and watch the floor and the door's bottom edge. No water after two cycles, and no E15.
Bosch's pages disagree on what to do about water in the base (E15)
Bosch's E15 page, its manuals, and a non-OEM repair guide give different advice. Here they are side by side.
| Bosch US owner support: "E15 Bosch Dishwasher Error Code" | Bosch US Use and Care manuals (SHX4AT⦠older; SHPM88/SHXM78 family newer) | Non-OEM: Fred's Appliance Academy (repair-training site; not Bosch) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What E15 / a leak means | Safety switch detected water in the base; leakage protection activated | Leaks from suds, a seal out of its track, a blocked vent, or improper installation | Water in the base; sometimes a control glitch |
| What to do first | Turn off the water inflow and call Bosch (1-800-944-2904) | Fix the cause: detergent, vegetable-oil trick for suds, reseat the seal, clear the vent | Disconnect power 5 minutes (hard reset) |
| Getting the water out | Not covered (call Bosch) | Not covered | Remove the door panel and kickplate, dry the base, reseat the float and switch; or tilt the dishwasher back 45Β° (it warns this may cause damage and won't find the leak) |
| Installation problem | β | Older manual: have it verified by qualified personnel (water supply, drain, leveling, plumbing). Newer manual: have an authorized service professional remount it | Check hoses and the sump |
| DIY repairs | β | "Do not attempt to repair the appliance yourself." Unauthorized work may void the warranty | Step-by-step DIY |
Our take: follow Bosch first: water off, then a call, especially in year 1 when the repair is free. Fix the cheap causes (detergent, rinse aid, seal, vent) yourself. We don't recommend tilting the dishwasher; even the non-OEM guide says it may cause damage and won't find the leak.

Diagnose by symptom β likely part
Before you touch parts: Switch off the breaker and close the water supply valve under the sink. Put towels down.
1. Leak at the door edge with the seal seated and the right detergent
Likely cause: a worn or torn door seal, or the lower door seal.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Door seal | Seals the door around the tub | Moderate |
| Lower door seal | Seals the bottom edge | Moderate |
2. Drips or E15 with the dishwasher off, or water at the back
Likely cause: the water inlet valve not closing, or inlet tubing leaking.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (kickplate off, water off).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water inlet valve | Lets water in | Advanced |
| Water inlet tubing | Carries water to the tub | Advanced |
3. Water at the drain connection or under the sink
Likely cause: a cracked drain hose or a loose drain connection. Bosch's manual also says the drain hose should be installed with a high loop.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain hose | Carries water to the sink drain or disposer | Advanced |
4. E15 returns, water under the middle of the dishwasher during the wash
Likely cause: a leaking pump, pump gasket, or tub seal, or a stuck float switch in the base.
DIY difficulty: Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Circulation pump (some with heater) | Sprays wash water | Pro only |
| Drain pump | Pumps water out | Pro only |
| Float switch / float | Detects water in the base | Pro only |
| Tub seal | Seals the tub to the base | Pro only |
Call a pro if: E15 returns, the dishwasher has to be pulled out, water reached wiring, or it's in year 1.
Recalls
The ApplianceDB recall sample we checked lists only an older 2009 Bosch and Siemens dishwasher recall (fire hazard), not a leak recall. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls before paying for a repair; recall repairs are free.
Prevent it next time
- Dishwasher detergent only, never hand dish soap (Bosch).
- Don't overfill the rinse aid dispenser; wipe spills right away (Bosch).
- Clean the door seal regularly with a damp cloth (Bosch); a soiled seal may not seal.
- Keep tall trays away from the vent (Bosch).
- Clean the filters on schedule so the tub drains well.
- Make sure the drain hose has a high loop (Bosch).

What Bosch's warranty covers on a dishwasher
Per Bosch's US warranty information page and the warranty statement in Bosch's US Use and Care Manual (see Sources):
| Period (from purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Entire appliance, parts and labor | Bosch |
| Years 2β5 | Electronics (microprocessor or printed circuit board), parts only; racks (not rack components), parts only | You pay labor |
| Lifetime | Rust-through of the inner tub liner and the stainless-steel door, parts only | You pay labor |
What this means for a leak: in year 1, a leaking seal, valve, hose, or pump is covered with labor. After year 1, those parts aren't on Bosch's extended list, but rust-through of the tub or stainless door is, parts-only, for life. Bosch excludes correction of installation problems, failure to maintain, and unauthorized or self-performed repairs beyond normal care, so a leak from the wrong detergent, a seal you pulled out, or a bad install usually isn't a warranty repair. Keep proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Free fixes done: detergent, rinse aid, vegetable-oil suds trick, seal seated and clean, vent clear, loading, visible hose fittings.
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; lifetime rust-through on the tub and stainless door; retailer or credit-card extended protection; your installer if it leaked from day one.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and where exactly the leak is.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Bosch / BSH-format 8-digit part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "bosch dishwasher β¦" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Most listings aren't brand-labeled, so confirm the fit with your model number. Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, and Thermador-labeled parts in the same results were excluded. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dishwashers in general unless marked, not Bosch-specific quotes. "Varies β get a quote" means the guides don't itemize that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? β R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Bosch's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? β N = unit + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? β Age and Life (use about 11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8β15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? β Past
Step A β Cost ratio: R Γ· N
Step B β Life used: Age Γ· Life
Step C β Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) Γ· N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | β Repair | π€ Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | π€ Get a second quote first | β Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. Count floor and cabinet damage from a leak that keeps returning.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Bosch shows E15 the day after someone used hand dish soap. The suds were the cause; after drying out and switching back to dishwasher detergent, it runs dry. R = $0.
β Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Bosch 500 Series leaks at the door with the seal seated. You replace the door seal yourself: R = $85; N = $1,100.
85 Γ· 1,100 = 8%; life used 6 Γ· 11 = 55% β Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Bosch keeps throwing E15; the tech quotes a circulation pump plus a tub seal: R = $600; N = $1,000. It had a $250 drain pump repair last year.
600 Γ· 1,000 = 60%; life used 11 Γ· 11 = 100%; repeat check (600 + 250) Γ· 1,000 = 85% β Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a pump plus seals on a dishwasher past about 10 years, repeated E15 after repairs, or water damage to cabinets that keeps coming back.
Tips toward repairing: it's a door seal, a hose, a valve, or a float; the dishwasher is in year 1; or the tub rusted through (lifetime parts coverage).
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50β60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

2. Your installer. If it leaked from the first cycles, Bosch's manuals point to installation: water supply, drain, leveling, plumbing.
3. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them whether E15 shows, where the water appears, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
4. A plumber. If the shutoff valve, the supply line, or the sink drain connection is leaking.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Where exactly is the leak: door, inlet, drain, pump, or tub?
- Did you dry the base and confirm the float works?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude water damage and installation problems, and a dishwasher that's already leaking is usually not covered.
FAQ
What does E15 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Bosch says E15 means the safety switch detected water in the base of the dishwasher and the leakage protection system activated. Turn off the water inflow and contact Bosch Customer Support at 1-800-944-2904.
Why is my Bosch dishwasher leaking from the door?
Bosch's manuals list suds from the wrong detergent or spilled rinse aid, a door seal pulled out of its track, and a blocked condensation vent. Use dishwasher detergent, reseat and clean the seal, and keep tall trays away from the vent.
How do I get rid of suds in my Bosch dishwasher?
Bosch says use only dishwasher detergent and don't overfill the rinse aid. If suds persist, add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to the bottom and run a cycle.
Should I tilt my Bosch dishwasher to clear E15?
Bosch's E15 page doesn't say to; it says turn off the water and call Bosch. A non-OEM repair site describes tilting, but warns it may cause damage and won't find the leak.
Why is my Bosch dishwasher leaking from the bottom?
Bosch points to installation (leveling, water supply, drain, plumbing) and suds. If the floor stays wet with those ruled out, a seal, valve, hose, or pump is the usual part.
Does Bosch's warranty cover a leak?
In year 1, Bosch covers the entire appliance with labor. After that, leaking seals, valves, hoses, and pumps aren't on the extended list, but rust-through of the tub or stainless door has lifetime parts coverage.
Is it worth fixing a leaking Bosch dishwasher?
Usually yes for a door seal, hose, valve, or float. A pump plus seals on a dishwasher past about 10 years often isn't. Use the calculator above.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls.
