Whirlpool Freezer Not Freezing? Settings, Showroom Mode, Overloading, Vents, Airflow Control, Door Seal, Coils, Frost, Evaporator Fan, Defrost Heater, Start Relay, Board — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Start with the free checks. Whirlpool's Product Help ("Not Cooling - Freezer Section") lists these, cheapest first:
- Is cooling turned on? Some Whirlpool refrigerators need to be turned back on after a power outage or surge, or after someone turned cooling off while cleaning. Your owner's manual shows how.
- Showroom (Demo) mode? In Showroom mode the lights work but nothing cools. "Showroom" lights up on the display on some models; the exit steps vary by model.
- Setting. Controls ship at the mid setting. To make it colder, move to the next higher setting, then wait at least 24 hours before you change it again. Whirlpool's blog says the target is 0°F or below.
- Overloaded or blocked vents? Food pushed against the back and side walls blocks the vents. Leave small gaps and don't stack items too high.
- Door sealing? Make sure packaging or bins aren't keeping the freezer door from sealing.
- Room temperature. Whirlpool says the refrigerator is meant for 55–110°F; garages outside that range cause problems. In a warm room the motor runs longer, 40–80% of the time is normal.
- Power Outage alert (some models): touch any button to clear it, and give the freezer time to recover.
Still warm? The common parts are a stopped evaporator fan, a failed defrost heater or defrost thermostat (frost on the back wall), a condenser fan or start relay that keeps the compressor from running, a thermistor, or the control board. Whirlpool's blog says a freezer that builds ice too quickly should be evaluated by a professional.

Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling turned off after an outage; Showroom on the display; setting changed less than 24 hours ago; freezer packed against the back wall; garage below 55°F; door held open by a bin | Setting, mode, load, or location | ✅ Free fix |
| Freezer warm and the fan behind the back panel is silent; frost on the back wall that keeps returning; compressor clicking; gasket leaking cold air | Evaporator fan, defrost heater or thermostat, start relay, condenser fan, gasket | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Freezer and fridge warm with the compressor running nonstop; tech suspects the sealed system; refrigerator 12+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Sealed system or repeat failures | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new refrigerator (check the 5-year sealed-system coverage first) |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Food safety first. If the freezer has been warm for a while, check what's thawed. Move frozen food to a cooler or another freezer.
- Unplug before cleaning coils or removing any panel. Whirlpool's coil-cleaning steps start with unplugging.
- Burning smell, sparking, or a tripped breaker. Leave it unplugged and call a pro.
- Some models' condensers can only be cleaned by a certified technician (Whirlpool). Check your manual before you remove covers.
- Sealed system: a refrigerant leak or compressor is licensed work.
- Don't chip ice off the back wall with tools; you can puncture the evaporator. Defrost instead.
- Still under warranty? Whirlpool covers parts and labor in year 1, and the sealed system for 5 years on side-by-side and French-door bottom-mount models. Schedule service before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair (see "Recalls" below).
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Whirlpool refrigerator do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label inside the refrigerator. You need it for the right part and to check your warranty.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | How the freezer gets cold | Sealed-system warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-freezer | Often WRT (check label) | Shared system; an airflow control on the freezer back wall splits air between freezer and fridge | Check your warranty sheet |
| Side-by-side | Often WRS (check label) | Shared system on most units | 5 years parts and labor |
| Bottom-freezer | Often WRB (check label) | Shared system on most units | 5 years parts and labor (French-door bottom mount) |
| French-door | Often WRF / WRX (check label) | Shared system on most units | 5 years parts and labor |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Whirlpool says most units make cold air in the freezer and push it into the fresh food section through vents, so a freezer problem often warms the fridge too.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Display: "Showroom," "Demo," or a Power Outage icon? Exit Showroom per your manual; touch a button to clear the outage alert.
- Setting: put it at mid, then one step colder. Wait 24 hours.
- Thermometer: put one between frozen packages overnight. Whirlpool's blog says 0°F or below is the goal.
- Vents: find the vents in the freezer and fridge and move anything touching them.
- Top-freezer models: the airflow control on the freezer back wall should be on Recommended. Whirlpool says you can temporarily shift airflow, then return it to Recommended.
- Listen with the freezer door open and the switch pressed: on most models you'll hear the evaporator fan. Silence plus a warm freezer points at the fan or frost.
- Back wall: a thick, even layer of frost points at the defrost system.
- Door: close it gently and check the gasket sits flat all the way around. Reseat bins that stick out.
How to know it's fixed: 24 hours later, ice cream is firm and the thermometer reads 0°F or below.
What Whirlpool says vs. what Whirlpool says (Product Help vs. the whirlpool.com blog)
Whirlpool's own pages don't agree on coil cleaning or on how much is DIY:
| Whirlpool Product Help: "Not Cooling - Freezer Section" | whirlpool.com blog: "What to Do If Your Freezer Is Not Freezing" and "7 Freezer Problems" | |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser coil cleaning | No routine cleaning needed in a normal home; every 2–3 months if the home is greasy, dusty, or has lots of pets; some models need none, and some can only be cleaned by a certified technician | Regularly check the condenser coils and vacuum them with a crevice attachment (check your Use and Care Guide) |
| Setting and thermostat | Mid setting is correct for normal use; one step at a time; wait 24 hours between changes | If it's cold but not freezing, turn the thermostat from lowest to highest: no click means a professional replacement is recommended |
| DIY scope | Settings, mode, loading, vents, power outage, door seal | Simple fixes (light bulbs, gasket cleaning, door blockages) are DIY; professional service is strongly recommended for all other freezer repairs |
Our take: follow your owner's manual on coils. If it says your condenser doesn't need cleaning, dusty coils likely aren't the cause. If it does, the blog's vacuum method is fine (unplugged). Give every setting change the full 24 hours before you decide the thermostat failed. For parts behind the freezer back panel, the blog's advice to use a professional is the safer default unless you're comfortable with a multimeter.
Whirlpool freezer signs and what they point to
Whirlpool's freezer pages diagnose by checks rather than one error-code list for every model. Your owner's manual lists any codes for your display.
| Sign | Whirlpool's explanation | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lights on, nothing cold | Showroom / Demo mode, or cooling turned off | Exit Showroom; turn cooling on | Control board | Easy → Pro |
| Power Outage on the display, 3 tones | Power was off and the freezer warmed | Touch any button to clear | — | Easy |
| Freezer warm after a big load | Overloading blocks airflow (Product Help); overpacking can cover the evaporator fan (blog) | Leave gaps; don't overload | — | Easy |
| Thick frost on the back wall | Frost blocks vents and coils; rapid ice buildup should be evaluated by a professional (blog) | Manual defrost to get by | Defrost heater, thermostat, or timer | Advanced |
| Compressor seems to run all the time | Room is warm (runs longer), or a worn door gasket (blog) | Check the room and the seal | Gasket; defrost parts | Easy → Advanced |
| Frost near the door edge | Door not sealing; bins out of position | Reseat bins; level the unit | Gasket | Easy → Moderate |
Which part each symptom points at:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer warm, no fan sound behind the back panel | Evaporator fan motor | Advanced |
| Frost on the back panel that returns after a defrost | Defrost heater or defrost thermostat (or the board or timer that runs defrost) | Advanced |
| Compressor clicks on and off; back of the fridge quiet and warm | Start relay (start device), or condenser fan motor | Advanced |
| Temperatures erratic even with a good fan and no frost | Thermistor (temperature sensor) or control board | Advanced → Pro |
| Cold air leaking at the freezer door | Freezer door gasket | Moderate |
| Compressor runs nonstop, fans spin, coils clean, still warm | Sealed system | Pro only |

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator. Move frozen food to a cooler. Have towels ready for melting frost.
1. Freezer warm and silent behind the back panel
Likely cause: the evaporator fan motor has failed or is frozen in frost. Whirlpool's blog says overpacking can cover the evaporator fan, so rule that out first.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator fan motor | Circulates cold air from the evaporator into the freezer and fridge | Advanced |
2. Frost on the back wall that keeps coming back
Likely cause: the defrost system. Whirlpool's blog says defects in the defrost timer and heater can cause frost buildup, and that a freezer that keeps frosting over may have a faulty defrost timer. A manual defrost buys time but won't fix the part.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator | Advanced |
| Defrost (bi-metal) thermostat | Lets the heater run only when the coil is cold | Advanced |
3. Compressor clicks on and off, or the back of the fridge is quiet and warm
Likely cause: a failed start relay (Whirlpool calls some of these a start device), or a failed condenser fan motor.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor start relay / start device | Starts the compressor | Advanced |
| Condenser fan motor | Cools the compressor and condenser | Advanced |
4. Cold air leaking at the freezer door
Likely cause: a torn or flattened freezer door gasket, or bins and shelves out of position. Whirlpool's blog says a worn seal can keep the compressor running overtime.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer door gasket | Seals the door | Moderate |
5. Temperatures drift even with a running fan and no frost
Likely cause: a thermistor (temperature sensor) reading wrong, or the control board. Whirlpool's blog says if the defrost parts look fine, check the thermostat and control panel, and contact a professional if there's damage.
DIY difficulty: Advanced → Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Thermistor | Tells the board the compartment temperature | Advanced |
| Control board | Runs the compressor, fans, and defrost | Pro only |
Fan spinning, settings right, still warm? A technician can test the defrost parts, relay, sensors, board, and sealed system in one visit.

Recalls
We searched the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. The Whirlpool-related refrigerator or freezer recall we found and read is September 27, 2005: about 112,000 automatic-defrost upright freezers and all-refrigerators made by W.C. Wood, where the defrost heater coil could become exposed (shock hazard). W.C. Wood is out of business; CPSC's note says Whirlpool provides a free in-home repair only for the recalled Amana, Maytag, and Whirlpool freezers (Whirlpool 866-580-9177). That recall covers stand-alone upright freezers and all-refrigerators, not the freezer section of a Whirlpool refrigerator. CPSC also lists a 2009 Maytag-family refrigerator recall that names other Whirlpool-owned brands, which we didn't verify for Whirlpool-brand models. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
Prevent it next time
- Leave room for air: small gaps between items; nothing against the vents or back wall.
- Don't overload after a big shop. Whirlpool lists overloading as a cause, and its blog says overpacking can cover the evaporator fan.
- Close the door gently and keep bins seated.
- Clean the condenser only on the schedule your owner's manual gives (more often in dusty or pet-heavy homes).
- Keep it indoors in the 55–110°F range.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a refrigerator
Per Whirlpool's US Major Appliance Limited Warranty (W11349438A, see Sources):
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Factory-specified replacement parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship | Whirlpool |
| Years 2–5 (French-door bottom mount and side-by-side) | Sealed refrigeration system: compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, and connecting tubing, parts and labor | Whirlpool |
What this means for a freezer that won't freeze: a failed fan, defrost part, relay, sensor, or board in year 1 is covered. On side-by-side and French-door bottom-mount models, a sealed-system failure is covered with labor through year 5; for a top-freezer, check your model's warranty sheet. Whirlpool excludes in-home instruction and improper installation or maintenance, so Showroom mode, a wrong setting, blocked vents, or a garage install aren't defects. Food loss isn't covered. Keep your proof of purchase.

- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "whirlpool refrigerator …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. GE, IKEA-labeled, generic, and unlabeled listings, brackets, and harnesses in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general unless marked, not Whirlpool-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech whether the evaporator fan runs, whether there's frost on the back wall, whether the fridge is warm too, and what the display shows. That separates a fan, a defrost part, a sensor, and a sealed-system problem.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your refrigerator, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 13 years, Fixr's average, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A new Whirlpool French-door's lights work but nothing gets cold; the display says "Showroom." You exit Showroom mode per the manual. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Whirlpool side-by-side has frost on the freezer back wall and soft ice cream. A tech replaces the defrost thermostat and heater: R = $300; N = $1,800.
300 ÷ 1,800 = 17%; life used 7 ÷ 13 = 54% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old Whirlpool top-freezer is warm in both sections with the compressor running nonstop; the tech quotes a sealed-system repair, a year after a fan ($180): R = $700; N = $1,200.
700 ÷ 1,200 = 58% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 13 ÷ 13 = 100%; repeat check (700 + 180) ÷ 1,200 = 73% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system repair out of coverage on an older refrigerator, repeat failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, defrost part, relay, sensor, or gasket; the refrigerator is under about 8 years old; or it's covered (year 1, or the 5-year sealed system).
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb; Fixr says never spend more than half the price of a new model on repairs. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the evaporator fan, defrost heater, and defrost thermostat?
- If it's the sealed system, is my side-by-side or French-door still inside the 5-year coverage?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude food loss, refrigerant recharges, and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why is my Whirlpool freezer not freezing?
Whirlpool's top checks: cooling turned off after an outage, Showroom mode on, a setting changed less than 24 hours ago, food blocking the vents, a door that isn't sealing, or a room outside 55–110°F.
How do I make my Whirlpool freezer colder?
Move the control to the next higher setting, then wait at least 24 hours before you change it again. Whirlpool's blog says 0°F or below is the target.
Why are the lights on but my Whirlpool freezer isn't cold?
It may be in Showroom (Demo) mode, which runs the lights without cooling. The exit steps vary by model; see your owner's manual.
Do I need to clean the coils on my Whirlpool refrigerator?
Whirlpool's Product Help says there's typically no need in a normal home, every 2–3 months in greasy, dusty, or pet-heavy homes, and some models need none or only a technician's cleaning. Whirlpool's blog says to check and vacuum them regularly. Follow your owner's manual.
Why is my Whirlpool freezer warm but the fridge is cold?
Often frost on the evaporator or a slow evaporator fan. Whirlpool's blog says to check the vents and the frost, and that a faulty defrost timer can make a freezer frost over again and again.
How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool freezer that won't freeze?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool evaporator fan motors were listed at about $50 to $178 and defrost thermostats at about $34 to $71. Fixr puts freezer diagnosis and repair at $100 to $250.
Should I replace a Whirlpool refrigerator whose freezer won't freeze?
Rarely for a fan, defrost part, or gasket. Consider it for a sealed-system repair on an older model that's out of coverage.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning coils or removing panels. Sealed-system work requires a certified technician. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
