LG Freezer Not Freezing? Settings, Lock, Demo Mode, Vents, Door Gasket, Back-Cover Dust, Frost, FF / dH / FS / CF / CH Codes, Evaporator Fan, Defrost Heater, Sensor, Board — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Start with the free checks. LG's help library ("If Your LG Freezer Is Not Cold Enough" and "Freezer Not Cold Enough (Weak Cooling)") lists these, cheapest first:
- Setting. LG's current article says to set the freezer to −8°F or colder (−8 to −11°F) when it isn't cold enough. If the panel won't change, long-press Lock to unlock it first.
- Demo mode? If the panel shows OF F, the fridge is in Demo/Display mode, which turns cooling off. With a refrigerator door open, hold REFRIGERATOR and ICE PLUS for 5 seconds.
- New or just moved? LG says cold air should come out within 1–2 hours, but reaching normal temperature takes 2–3 days.
- Blocked vents and overfilling. Keep food off the vents; LG's weak-cooling article says to fill the fridge only up to about 60%.
- Doors and gasket. Close the doors fully and press any loose gasket back into its groove.
- Space and room. Leave about 4 inches behind the fridge; LG gives a room range of 41–109°F.
- Back-cover dust. Unplug and vacuum the back cover; LG says dust there can overheat the compressor. Don't remove the cover.
Still warm? Check the display for a code. LG says FF (freezer fan) is often ice on the fan, cleared by a manual defrost. dH, dS, FS, CF, and CH need a service visit. The parts behind those codes are the evaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost or freezer sensor, condenser fan, main board, or the sealed system.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Panel shows OF F; panel locked; setting warmer than −8°F; new fridge less than 2–3 days old; vents blocked; door gasket loose; back cover dusty | Setting, mode, load, or location | ✅ Free fix |
| FF code or frost on the vents that comes back after a defrost; dH / dS / FS code; CF code; gasket torn | Evaporator fan, defrost heater, sensor, condenser fan, gasket | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| CH code (LG: likely refrigerant leak from the condenser); compressor runs nonstop with fans spinning and both sections warm; fridge 12+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Sealed system or repeat failures | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new refrigerator (check LG's sealed-system and compressor coverage first) |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Food safety first. A manual defrost takes at least 8 hours with the doors open. Move food to a cooler or backup fridge first, as LG suggests.
- Unplug before vacuuming the back cover, and don't remove the cover (LG).
- Burning smell, sparking, or a tripped breaker. Leave it unplugged and call a pro.
- Codes LG says need service: dH / FdH / dHF, dS, FS (freezer sensor), rS, CF (if it persists), CH, and the cycle error. LG says there's no owner troubleshooting for most of these.
- Sealed system: a refrigerant leak or compressor is licensed work.
- Don't chip ice off the vents or fan with tools. Defrost instead.
- Still under warranty? LG covers parts and labor in year 1 and the sealed system longer (see below). Request service before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair (see "Recalls" below).
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG refrigerator do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label inside the refrigerator. You need it for the right part, for codes, and for the warranty.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| French-door | Often LF / LRF (check label) | Freezer drawer at the bottom; LG's error-code list groups French-door, side-by-side, and bottom-freezer codes together |
| Side-by-side | Often LRS / LS (check label) | Same code group as French-door |
| Bottom-freezer | Often LB / LD (check label) | Same code group as French-door |
| Top-freezer | Often LT (check label) | LG lists top-freezer codes separately; some show as lit LEDs instead of letters |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. On some models the code shows as a pattern of lit temperature LEDs; LG's error-code list maps each pattern.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Display: OF F means Demo mode. A letter code (FF, dH, FS, CF, CH) means see the table below. A locked panel won't take changes until you long-press Lock.
- Setting: −8°F or colder (LG's current article). Wait a day before you judge it.
- Thermometer: put one between frozen packages overnight.
- Vents: move anything pressed against the vents in the freezer.
- Frost on the vents or back wall? That's the cue for LG's manual defrost.
- Gasket: run a hand along it; push any loose section back into its groove.
- Back cover: unplug, vacuum the dust, plug back in.
How to know it's fixed: 24–48 hours later the freezer holds your setting and ice cream is firm.
What LG says vs. what LG says (three LG pages that don't agree)
LG's own help pages give different numbers for the same problem:
| LG: "If Your LG Freezer Is Not Cold Enough" (dated 09/30/2026) | LG: "Freezer Not Cold Enough (Weak Cooling)" and "Error Code List" | LG: "How to Fix ER FF and ER rF Error Codes" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezer setting | Set −8°F or colder (−8 to −11°F); its FAQ gives a recommended 0 to −4°F, and −6 to −11°F if it isn't cold or the room is hot | Set −22 to −24°C (about −7.6 to −11.2°F) | — |
| How long to defrost with the doors open | — | At least 8 hours, then 24–48 hours to get cold again | At least 24 hours (about 1 day in summer, up to 3 days in winter), then 24–48 hours |
| What "FS" means | — | The list uses FS for a freezer sensor error and, in another section, for an ice-maker flow sensor | — |
Our take: start at about −8°F; going colder rarely fixes a fan or defrost problem. For an FF code or frost on the vents, defrost for at least 8 hours, and go the full 24 hours (longer in a cold room) if ice is still on the fan or vents when you check. If your panel shows FS, tell the technician whether the ice maker was overfilling; that separates a flow-sensor problem from a freezer-sensor problem.
Not from LG: Fixr, a cost-guide site, says to clean refrigerator coils at least twice a year. LG's advice is to vacuum the back cover (unplugged) and not remove it.
LG freezer codes and what they point to
| Code (display) | LG's explanation | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OF F | Demo / Display mode; cooling off | Hold REFRIGERATOR + ICE PLUS 5 s with a door open | — | Easy |
| FF (Er FF) | Freezer fan motor problem, or ice blocking the fan | Unplug; doors open at least 8 h (up to 24 h+); dry; wait 24–48 h | Evaporator fan motor | Moderate → Advanced |
| dH / FdH / dHF | Defrost system fault: ice buildup, blown thermal fuse, heater failure, or main board | Manual defrost to get by | Defrost heater, fuse, or board — request service | Pro recommended |
| dS / F dS | Freezer defrost sensor | — | Request service | Pro recommended |
| FS | Freezer sensor (or, for ice-maker overfilling, a flow sensor) | Check water pressure if the ice maker overfills | Request service | Pro recommended |
| CF (C, E CF) | Condenser fan motor at the back; can be wiring or the main board | — | Request service | Pro recommended |
| CH | High-side cycle leakage: LG says a refrigerant leak from the condenser is highly possible | Unplug 2 minutes to reset; let it defrost again | Sealed-system service | Pro only |
| Cycle error (lit LEDs) | Can cause poor cooling; inspection required | — | Request service | Pro only |
Which part each symptom points at:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|
| FF code, or no fan sound behind the freezer back panel after a defrost | Evaporator fan motor | Advanced |
| dH code, or frost on the vents that returns after a defrost | Defrost heater (or thermal fuse, sensor, or board) | Advanced |
| dS or FS code | Defrost sensor or freezer sensor | Advanced |
| CF code; back of the fridge hot and quiet | Condenser fan motor | Advanced |
| Cold air leaking at the drawer or door | Freezer door gasket | Moderate |
| CH code; compressor runs nonstop with fans spinning | Sealed system | Pro only |
Codes and explanations from LG US help library pages (sources 1–4), checked 2026-10-30. The part mapping is our own from those pages and the LG part catalog on Sears PartsDirect.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator. Move frozen food to a cooler. Have towels ready for melting frost.
1. FF code or a silent freezer fan
Likely cause: ice around the evaporator fan, or a failed fan motor. LG says to defrost first; if the code returns, the fan motor is the usual part.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (defrost) → Advanced (motor).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator fan motor | Circulates cold air through the freezer and into the fridge | Advanced |
2. dH code, or frost on the vents that keeps coming back
Likely cause: the defrost system. LG lists ice buildup, a blown thermal fuse, heater failure, or a main board issue, and says the code appears when the expected temperature change doesn't happen after defrost starts.
DIY difficulty: Advanced; LG recommends service.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator | Advanced |
3. dS or FS code
Likely cause: a failed defrost sensor or freezer sensor. LG says these require a professional inspection.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost / freezer sensor | Tells the board the coil or compartment temperature | Advanced |
4. CF code, or the back of the fridge is hot and quiet
Likely cause: the condenser fan motor at the rear, which releases heat from the compressor. LG says disconnected wiring or the main board can also cause CF.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser fan motor | Cools the compressor and condenser | Advanced |
5. Cold air leaking at the freezer drawer or door
Likely cause: a gasket out of its groove (press it back in) or torn. LG's error-code page also says frost along the freezer walls means the leveling and door alignment need checking.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer door gasket | Seals the drawer or door | Moderate |
Defrosted, fans spinning, still warm, or a CH code? A technician can test the fan, heater, sensors, board, and sealed system in one visit.

Recalls
We searched the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. The LG refrigerator recall we found and read is from June 29, 2005: about 20,000 LG and Kenmore Elite Trio three-door bottom-freezer refrigerators, where the condenser fan motor capacitor could short and overheat (fire hazard). The LG models were LRFC21755TT/SB/ST and LRFC25750WW/SW/SB/TT/ST, serial numbers starting 405KR through 410KR; the remedy was a free in-home repair (LG 888-294-5782 at the time). It isn't a freezer-not-freezing recall, but if you own one of those models and it was never repaired, mention it. We didn't find a current LG recall for freezers that won't freeze. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
Prevent it next time
- Don't overfill: LG suggests up to about 60%, with vents clear.
- Close doors fully and check the gasket sits in its groove.
- Vacuum the back cover now and then, unplugged; don't remove it.
- Leave 4 inches behind the fridge, and keep it in a 41–109°F room.
- Keep the fridge level with the doors aligned; LG links frost along the freezer walls to leveling and alignment.

What LG's warranty covers on a refrigerator
Per LG's US refrigerator limited warranty (see Sources; read via search-index text because the PDF blocked our fetch):
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor for defects | LG |
| Sealed system, through year 5 | Sealed system and compressor, parts and labor | LG |
| Linear / inverter compressor, years 6–10 | Compressor part only | You pay labor |
Coverage varies by model (some list longer sealed-system terms), so check the warranty sheet that came with yours. What this means for a freezer that won't freeze: an evaporator fan, defrost heater, sensor, condenser fan, or board in year 1 is covered. A CH or other sealed-system failure is covered with labor through year 5. Setting, Demo mode, overfilling, and dust aren't defects. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1; sealed system through year 5; inverter compressor part through year 10; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Free fixes done: setting, lock, Demo mode, 2–3 days for a new fridge, vents, gasket, space, back-cover dust, manual defrost.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "lg refrigerator …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Samsung, GE, Kenmore-labeled, and generic listings, brackets, and evaporator assemblies in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general unless marked, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: tell the tech the exact code, whether you already did a manual defrost (and for how long), whether the fridge side is warm too, and whether the ice maker overfills. That separates a fan, defrost, sensor, and sealed-system problem.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your refrigerator, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 13 years, Fixr's average, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old LG French-door shows FF and the freezer is soft. You unplug it and leave the doors open overnight; the code clears and it's cold 2 days later. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old LG side-by-side shows dH. A tech replaces the defrost heater: R = $300; N = $2,000.
300 ÷ 2,000 = 15%; life used 7 ÷ 13 = 54% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG bottom-freezer shows CH; the tech quotes a sealed-system repair after an evaporator fan last year ($250): R = $900; N = $1,600.
900 ÷ 1,600 = 56% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 11 ÷ 13 = 85%; repeat check (900 + 250) ÷ 1,600 = 72% → Replace (unless an inverter-compressor part is still covered and the labor quote is low).
Tips toward replacing: a CH or sealed-system repair out of coverage on an older refrigerator, repeat failures, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, defrost heater, sensor, or gasket; the refrigerator is under about 8 years old; or it's covered.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb; Fixr says never spend more than half the price of a new model on repairs. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check for ice on the evaporator fan before replacing it?
- For dH: did you test the heater, the thermal fuse, and the board?
- If it's the sealed system, is it still inside LG's coverage, and is the compressor part covered longer?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude food loss, refrigerant recharges, and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why is my LG freezer not freezing?
LG's top checks: setting too warm, a locked panel, Demo mode (OF F), a new fridge that hasn't had 2–3 days, blocked vents, a loose gasket, too little space behind it, or dust on the back cover. FF often means ice on the fan.
What temperature should my LG freezer be?
LG's current article says to set −8°F or colder (−8 to −11°F) if it isn't cold enough; its FAQ lists 0 to −4°F as the normal recommendation.
How do I fix FF on my LG freezer?
LG says to unplug it and leave both doors open for at least 8 hours (its ER FF article says at least 24 hours, up to 3 days in winter), dry everything, plug it back in, and allow 24–48 hours. If FF returns, request service.
What does dH mean on an LG refrigerator?
A defrost fault: ice buildup, a blown thermal fuse, heater failure, or a main board issue. LG says to request service.
How much does it cost to fix an LG freezer that won't freeze?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, LG evaporator fan motors were listed at about $33 to $221 and defrost heaters at about $93 to $191. Fixr puts freezer diagnosis and repair at $100 to $250.
Should I replace an LG refrigerator whose freezer won't freeze?
Rarely for a fan, heater, sensor, or gasket. Consider it for a CH or sealed-system repair on an older model that's out of coverage.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the refrigerator before vacuuming the back cover or removing panels. Sealed-system work requires a certified technician. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
