Quick answer

Check that cooling is actually on. Whirlpool says some refrigerators must be turned back on by hand after a power outage or surge, and the cooling can be switched off by accident during cleaning. Some models also have a "Showroom" or "Demo" mode: the interior lights work, but neither section cools, and "Showroom" may light up on the display. Both are free fixes.

Whirlpool's checks, cheapest first:

  1. Turn cooling back on, or exit Showroom / Demo mode (the button sequence is in your owner's manual; it varies by model).
  2. Check the settings. Whirlpool suggests 37°F for the fresh food section (safe range 32–40°F) and 0°F for the freezer. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours between changes.
  3. New install? Allow 24 hours for the freezer to reach temperature, and check the freezer door seals (leftover packaging or a badly placed bin can hold it open).
  4. Unblock the vents. Most Whirlpool refrigerators make cold air in the freezer and push it into the fresh food section through vents. Bulky items against the back or side walls break that loop.
  5. Check the room. Whirlpool designs its refrigerators for 55°F to 110°F. A cold garage or a spot next to an oven can stop proper cooling. Don't block the base grille.
  6. Condenser. Whirlpool says most homes don't need routine condenser cleaning. In a greasy, dusty, or pet-heavy home, clean it every 2 to 3 months. Some models need no cleaning; some can only be cleaned by a technician (check your manual).
  7. Give it time after a big grocery load or a lot of door openings. Whirlpool says it can take several hours to recover.

If those don't fix it, the parts that usually fail are the evaporator fan (freezer cold, fridge warm), a defrost fault (frost on the freezer back wall), the air damper control, the condenser fan, the compressor start relay, or the control board. A sealed-system failure is the expensive one. Whirlpool covers the sealed system with labor for 5 years on French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side models (see warranty).

Repair or replace? Fans, defrost parts, dampers, and relays are worth fixing. A sealed-system repair on an older, out-of-warranty fridge usually isn't. See the calculator below.

Which Whirlpool refrigerator do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label inside the fresh food section (usually on a side wall or under the top), or in your owner's manual paperwork. You need it to order the right fan or heater and to check warranty status.

TypeModel prefix (examples)How cold air reaches the fridgeUsual "fridge warm" partsWarranty note
Top-freezerOften WRT (check label)Shared system: air made in the freezer flows through vents into the fridgeEvaporator fan, defrost, damper controlYear 1 parts and labor; check your sheet for sealed-system terms
Side-by-sideOften WRS (check label)Shared system (Whirlpool: "most units")Evaporator fan, defrost, damperSealed system 5 years with labor

French-doorOften WRF / WRX (check label)Shared system on most units; check your manualFans, defrost, damper; boardSealed system 5 years with labor

Whirlpool explains that most of its refrigerators use a shared cooling system: cold air is made in the freezer and pushed into the fresh food section, then returns through vents. That's why a cold freezer and warm fridge usually points to airflow (fan, frost, damper), not the compressor. Prefixes are examples, not a full list.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Is it on? Some Whirlpool refrigerators must be turned back on after a power outage or surge, or were switched off while cleaning. On models with a Power Outage indicator, the display reads "Power Outage" and beeps 3 times; Whirlpool says touch any button to stop the tone and again to clear the icon.
  2. Showroom / Demo mode? If "Showroom" is lit (some models), cooling is off and only the lights work. Whirlpool says the exit sequence varies by model, so use your owner's manual. Whirlpool also notes Showroom mode can be used on purpose, for example while on vacation, so someone may have turned it on.
  3. Check the setting. Factory setting is the mid setting. On dial controls, Whirlpool says 1 is warmest and higher numbers are colder. Move one increment (about 1°F, one bar, or one click), then wait 24 hours.
  4. Measure correctly. Whirlpool says put an appliance thermometer in the center of each section, away from walls, doors, and vents. Aim for 37°F (32–40°F) and 0°F.
  5. Unblock the vents. Don't push food against the back or side walls; leave small gaps and don't stack too high. In the fresh food section, cool air comes in from the wall and returns through a vent near the bottom.
  6. Check the room and spot. 55°F to 110°F; not next to an oven or radiator; not behind a cabinet door; base grille clear. Whirlpool says the compressor normally runs 40% to 80% of the time and longer in a warm room.
  7. Doors. Close them firmly, check that nothing is in the way, and keep openings short. Frequent openings warm the fridge and add frost.
  8. Condenser (if your model needs it). Whirlpool's steps for models with a front condenser: unplug, open the door, remove the base grille (2 Phillips screws), vacuum the grille, the open area behind it, and the front of the condenser with a soft brush, then refit and plug in.

How to know it's fixed: after 24 hours, the thermometer in the center of the fresh food section reads 37°F or close (inside 32–40°F), the freezer is near 0°F, and drinks are as cold as you like.

Whirlpool display states that look like a failure

Whirlpool refrigerators rarely show classic numbered error codes to owners. These states stop or look like stopped cooling but aren't failures:

Display states and steps from Whirlpool US Product Help articles (sources 1–4), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 9), which maps manufacturer codes to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty, has no Whirlpool refrigerator entries, so the symptom→part table above is our own mapping from Whirlpool's shared-airflow description and the part catalog, not Whirlpool wording. Your owner's manual has the final word for your model.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator. Move food to a cooler. Freezer back panels hide the evaporator coil, fan, and defrost parts; take photos as you remove screws.

1. Freezer cold, fresh food warm

Likely causes: a failed or ice-bound evaporator fan motor (on shared-system models it pushes freezer air into the fridge), a stuck air damper control, or the start of a defrost problem.

Signs: you don't hear or feel air from the freezer vents with the door switch pressed; the freezer stays cold but the fridge creeps up over a day or two.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (freezer back panel off).

Call a pro if: the fan runs and the damper is open, but the fridge stays warm.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Evaporator fan motorMoves cold air over the coil and into the fridgeModerate
Air damper controlOpens to let cold air into the fresh food sectionModerate

2. Frost or ice on the freezer back wall

Likely causes: a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or the control that runs defrost. Ice blocks airflow, so the fridge warms first. Whirlpool also notes that frequent or long door openings let in moisture that can form frost, so rule that out first.

Signs: a white frost pattern on the back panel; the fan may scrape on ice.

DIY difficulty: Advanced. A manual defrost (unplug with doors open 24–48 hours, towels down) restores cooling for a while and confirms the diagnosis.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Defrost heaterMelts frost off the evaporator coilAdvanced
Defrost thermostat (bi-metal)Lets the heater run only when the coil is coldAdvanced

3. Both sections warm, compressor area hot

Likely causes: a failed condenser fan motor (in the machine compartment at the back), a dirty condenser in a dusty or pet-heavy home, a blocked base grille, or a spot that's too hot.

Signs: the compressor runs but the fan behind the back panel doesn't; the back of the fridge is very hot.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (rear access panel).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Condenser fan motorCools the condenser and compressorModerate

4. Compressor clicks but won't run; or runs constantly and nothing gets cold

Likely causes: a failed start relay / overload (clicking every few minutes), a control board fault, or a sealed-system problem (compressor or refrigerant leak).

Signs: a click, a hum, then silence; or constant running with nothing cold. (Whirlpool notes that 40–80% run time is normal, and more in a warm room, so long running alone isn't a fault.)

DIY difficulty: Advanced for the relay; Pro only for anything sealed-system. On French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side Whirlpool models, the sealed system is covered with labor for 5 years.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Compressor start relay / overloadStarts the compressorAdvanced
Electronic control boardRuns fans, defrost, and compressorAdvanced; diagnose first
Temperature sensor (thermistor)Reports temperature to the boardModerate

Not sure if it's a fan, defrost, or the sealed system? A technician can check fan operation, frost pattern, and compressor in one visit; that's the visit that decides repair vs. replace.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a refrigerator

Per Whirlpool's US Major Appliance Limited Warranty (W11349438A, see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 — all Whirlpool-brand major appliancesFactory-specified replacement parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanship (or, at Whirlpool's option, a replacement product)Whirlpool
Years 2–5 — French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side refrigeratorsSealed refrigeration system: compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, and connecting tubingWhirlpool (parts and labor)

What this means for a fridge that won't cool: in year 1, a failed fan, defrost part, or board is covered. On French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side models, a compressor or leak in years 2–5 is still covered with labor. For a top-freezer, read the warranty sheet that came with your model; some Whirlpool refrigeration warranties also list the cavity liner in years 2–5. Whirlpool doesn't cover in-home instruction (for example, exiting Showroom mode), improper installation or maintenance, consumables such as water filters, or food loss. Service must be done by a Whirlpool-authorized servicer, and you need proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; 5-year sealed system with labor on French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side; plus retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: cooling on, Showroom off, 37°F / 0°F, 24 hours, vents, room, condenser, doors. Whirlpool won't cover a visit to show you these.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether it's a sealed-system repair.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ water-line kit)
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Whirlpool French-door fridge comes back from a power outage with the lights on but nothing cold. The owner turns cooling back on as the manual describes. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Whirlpool side-by-side has a cold freezer and a warm fridge; the evaporator fan has failed. A tech replaces it: R = $300; N = $1,700; no other repairs.
300 ÷ 1,700 = 18%; life used 6 ÷ 15 = 40%; repeat check 18% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old Whirlpool top-freezer has a refrigerant leak. Last year it had a defrost heater for $250. R = $1,000; N = $1,000.
1,000 ÷ 1,000 = 100%; life used 13 ÷ 15 = 87%; repeat check (1,000 + 250) ÷ 1,000 = 125% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system repair out of warranty, a second big repair in about 2 years, cracked liners, or an old fridge that's also inefficient.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, defrost part, damper, relay, or gasket; the fridge is under about 8 years old; or it's a French-door, bottom-mount, or side-by-side inside its 5-year sealed-system period.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans cap refrigerant or sealed-system repairs and exclude food loss. A fridge that's already broken is usually not covered. Whirlpool also sells extended service plans on new appliances.

FAQ

Why is my Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling but the light is on?
Cooling may be turned off (it can happen after a power outage or during cleaning), or the fridge may be in Showroom / Demo mode, which keeps the lights on without cooling. Whirlpool says the exit steps vary by model; check your owner's manual.

How do I get my Whirlpool refrigerator out of Showroom mode?
Whirlpool says the sequence varies by model, so use the owner's manual for your model number. On some models "Showroom" lights up on the display while it's on.

What temperature should a Whirlpool refrigerator be?
Whirlpool suggests 37°F in the fresh food section (32–40°F is the safe range) and 0°F in the freezer. Change one step at a time and wait 24 hours.

Which number is coldest on a Whirlpool dial?
Whirlpool says on dial controls 1 is warmest and higher numbers are colder.

Why is my Whirlpool freezer cold but the fridge warm?
Most Whirlpool refrigerators make cold air in the freezer and push it into the fridge through vents. Blocked vents, a failed evaporator fan, a stuck damper, or frost from a defrost problem can all cut that airflow.

Do I need to clean my Whirlpool refrigerator's condenser coils?
Whirlpool says there's typically no need in a normal home, but in a greasy, dusty, or pet-heavy home clean it every 2–3 months. Some models need no cleaning and some can only be cleaned by a technician; check your manual.

Can I put my Whirlpool refrigerator in the garage?
Whirlpool designs its refrigerators for indoor use at 55°F to 110°F. A garage outside that range can cause poor or uneven cooling.

Does Whirlpool's warranty cover a refrigerator that won't cool?
Year 1 covers parts and labor. French-door, bottom-mount, and side-by-side models also get sealed-system coverage (compressor, evaporator, condenser, dryer, tubing) with labor in years 2–5.

Is it worth fixing a Whirlpool refrigerator that won't cool?
Usually yes for fans, defrost parts, dampers, and relays. A sealed-system repair on an older, out-of-warranty fridge usually isn't. Use the calculator above.
