Samsung Freezer Not Freezing? Codes, Frost, Fans, Seals — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, protect the food. Keep the freezer door shut; move anything that matters to a cooler. Then check actual temperature: Samsung says to put a thermometer between frozen packages and wait up to 8 hours for a true reading. Samsung's recommended setting is -2°F for the freezer (and 38°F for the fridge); the USDA safe line is 0°F or below.
Samsung's order of checks:
- Look for an error code on the display (and don't unplug or press buttons to clear it unless Samsung's guide tells you to).
- Check for Cooling Off (demo) mode: the display shows OF OF, O FF, or scrolling bars, and nothing cools. Your manual has the button combination to turn it off.
- Give it time. Samsung says the display can take up to 4 hours to update and the freezer up to 28 hours to reach the set temperature after a change, power cycle, or new install.
- Airflow: at least 2 inches of space at the back, top, and sides, and 2 inches in front of the vents inside. Overpacked freezers block the fan.
- Doors and seals: close fully, clean the gaskets, and check them with a dollar bill.
- Room temperature: Samsung says performance drops below 55°F room temperature, and the fridge isn't designed for garages that go outside 50–110°F.
Freezer warm, fridge also warm, frost on the freezer's back wall? That points to a defrost problem (heater, sensor, or board) or an iced-up freezer fan (code 21E). Those need a technician or confident DIY.
Repair or replace? Fans, sensors, gaskets, and defrost heaters are usually worth fixing. A compressor or sealed-system failure on an older fridge often isn't, but check Samsung's 5-year sealed-system and 10-year compressor coverage first.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| OF OF on the display; freezer overpacked or vents blocked; door left ajar; set too warm; new install or recent power cut | Settings, airflow, or not enough time | ✅ Free fix. Turn off Cooling Off mode, clear the vents, wait up to 28 hours |
| Frost on the back wall, 21E code, fan silent or noisy, soft ice cream after the checks | Iced evaporator (defrost heater, sensor, board) or freezer fan | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Nothing cools, compressor codes 84C / 83E / 85E / 86E that return, hissing or oily residue, fridge 15+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Compressor or sealed system | ♻️ Lean toward replacing unless Samsung's 5-year sealed-system / 10-year compressor coverage applies |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- You smell burning, see scorch marks, or the breaker trips. Leave it off and call a technician.
- You hear hissing or see oily residue on lines at the back, or smell a chemical odor. That can be a refrigerant leak: pro only.
- The compressor is very hot, clicks on and off every few minutes, or shows 84C. Leave diagnosis to a pro.
- Food may have thawed. The USDA says food that still has ice crystals or is no warmer than 40°F can be refrozen or used; discard food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours. A full freezer usually holds about 2 days with the door shut (a half-full one about a day); a fridge's freezer compartment may not last as long.
- The fridge is still under warranty. Use Samsung's warranty service before removing any panel.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Samsung refrigerator do you have?
Samsung says the model and serial label is inside the refrigerator compartment on a side wall above the top shelf. You need it for parts and warranty.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Freezer location | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| French door / 4-door flex | Often RF | Bottom drawer(s) | Flex zones can be set as fridge or freezer; check the zone's setting |
| Side-by-side | Often RS | Left side | Tall narrow freezer; overpacking blocks vents easily |
| Bottom freezer | Often RB | Bottom drawer | |
| Top freezer | Often RT | Top | Samsung notes some top-freezer models have a "Top Freezer Off" mode; check it isn't on |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Error code? Note it before doing anything else. Samsung's code guide asks you not to unplug or press buttons unless directed; it hinders diagnosis.
- Cooling Off mode? OF OF, O FF, or scrolling bars mean demo mode; everything looks on but nothing cools. Your manual lists the button hold (often two buttons for several seconds).
- Touch the food. Samsung suggests judging by the food, not the display. Hard-frozen items mean the freezer is working; soft ice cream alone may just mean it's set too warm. Samsung says ice cream keeps best below 3°F.
- Set it colder or use Power Freeze, then wait. A thermometer reading needs up to 8 hours; a setting change can take up to 28 hours to fully settle.
- Vents and loading. Keep 2 inches clear in front of vents inside, and keep the fridge at least about two-thirds stocked, per Samsung, but don't jam the freezer full.
- Outside clearance. 2 inches at the back, top, and sides so the compressor can shed heat.
- Doors and seals. Clean the gaskets monthly with a damp cloth and dish soap. Close the door on a dollar bill: if it slides out easily, the seal isn't tight there (Samsung notes a new fridge that isn't level may fail this test). A warped or torn seal needs replacing.
- Hot food: let it cool first.
- Room: Samsung says a room below 55°F reduces performance, and items can't be kept frozen when the room is outside about 50–110°F (garages).
- Power cycle (when no code is showing): switch off the breaker or unplug for 2 minutes, then restore power and wait.
How to know it's fixed: a thermometer between frozen packages reads 0°F or below (Samsung targets -2°F) after up to 8 hours, ice cream is firm, and no code returns over the next 2 days.
Freezer warm and frost on the back wall
If you remove the freezer's bottom basket or the back panel cover and see thick white frost on the back wall or over the vents, the evaporator coil is iced. Air can't pass through it, so the freezer warms up even though the compressor runs.
Common causes:
- Warm, humid air getting in: a door left ajar, a torn gasket, or opening the door often. Samsung's frost guide uses a flashlight test: put a flashlight inside and close the door; light showing through means a gap.
- The defrost system isn't clearing the coil: a failed defrost heater, defrost sensor, or the control board.
- The freezer fan freezes up: code 21E; Samsung says it can be caused by the door left open or a gasket gap.
What you can do safely:
- Fix the door gap first (overpacked bins and ice buckets are common).
- Manually defrost: empty the freezer into coolers, switch off or unplug, open the doors, and put towels down. Samsung says never use a hair dryer; light frost wipes off with a damp cloth and medium frost with a plastic scraper.
- Restart and watch. If heavy frost returns within days to weeks, the defrost system needs testing.
Call a pro if: frost returns after a manual defrost, the 21E code keeps coming back, or you'd need to test heaters and sensors with a meter.
Samsung codes linked to a warm freezer
| Code | Samsung's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 21E | Freezer fan error: usually a frozen fan from a door left open or a gasket gap; can be a failed fan motor | Defrost, check door seal and loading; if it returns, request service |
| 22E / 22C | Fridge fan error, sometimes after a door left open | Unplug, leave doors open a few hours, restart; if it returns, request service |
| 5E | Fridge defrost sensor fault | Request service |
| 84C | Compressor locked | Request service |
| 83E / 85E / 86E / 85C | Compressor current or voltage fault (abnormal current, brown-out, surge, low voltage) | Samsung suggests switching the breaker off for 60 seconds and back on; if it returns, request service (an electrician may need to check the outlet) |
| PC ER | Communication error between boards | Request service (Samsung notes the wire harness above the door can come loose) |
| OF OF / O FF | Cooling Off (demo) mode | Not a fault; turn it off per your manual |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21E | Freezer evaporator fan | Defrost; fix door seal | Fan motor or defrost system | Advanced |
| 22E / 22C | Fridge fan | Doors open a few hours | Fan motor | Moderate |
| 5E | Defrost sensor | — | Sensor | Pro only |
| 84C | Compressor | — | Compressor / sealed system | Pro only |
| 83E / 85E / 86E / 85C | Power supply or compressor | Breaker off 60 s | Electrician or compressor | Pro only |
| PC ER | Control board / harness | — | Harness or board | Pro only |
Code meanings from Samsung's US refrigerator error-code guide (source 3), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 9). Codes vary by model; your user manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker. Move food to coolers.
1. Freezer warm, no fan sound when the door switch is pressed, or 21E
Likely cause: a failed or iced freezer evaporator fan motor.
Signs: compressor runs but little air comes from freezer vents; squealing or silence from behind the back panel; 21E.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (back panel off; defrost first).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator fan motor | Moves cold air over the coil into the freezer | Advanced |
2. Heavy frost on the back wall that keeps returning
Likely causes: defrost heater, defrost sensor, or the control board that runs defrost.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (meter testing; several parts).
Call a pro if: you don't have a multimeter, or the fridge is in its first year.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator | Advanced |
| Defrost sensor | Ends the defrost cycle | Advanced |
| Control board | Schedules defrost and runs fans | Advanced |
3. Freezer soft and fridge warm, compressor area hot, back of fridge quiet
Likely causes: the condenser fan (on models with one) isn't running, so the compressor overheats; or a compressor / sealed-system fault.
DIY difficulty: Advanced for the condenser fan; pro only for compressor or refrigerant.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser fan motor | Cools the compressor and condenser | Advanced |
| Compressor / sealed system | Pumps refrigerant | Pro only |
4. Door won't seal; frost near the door edge
Likely cause: a torn or warped door gasket. Samsung says a seal that's pulled out can sometimes be pushed back in; a damaged one needs service or replacement.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
Food at risk and not sure which part? A technician can check fans, defrost, and the compressor in one visit.

What Samsung's warranty covers on a refrigerator
Per Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page (re-read 2026-10-30):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor (standard manufacturer's warranty) | Samsung |
| Limited-time | Free 2-year extended warranty on eligible refrigerators bought during Samsung's 2026 offer (ends 12/31/2026); claim required | Check your terms |
| Up to 5 years | Sealed system coverage | Samsung (sealed-system labor) |
| Up to 10 years | Digital inverter compressor (parts) | Check your terms after year 5 |
What this means for a warm freezer: fans, heaters, sensors, and boards are covered in year 1 (or an eligible extended period). A compressor or sealed-system failure can still be covered for years after that, so ask Samsung before paying for one. Cooling Off mode, blocked vents, and overloading are not defects. Keep your proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Is it broken? Rule out Cooling Off mode, settings, vents, and recovery time (up to 28 hours).
- Warranty: year 1, the 2026 extended offer, sealed-system and compressor coverage, and any retailer or credit-card protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Written quote: part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether a refrigerant repair includes a recharge and leak test.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. Count food loss if the freezer keeps failing.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 1-year-old Samsung French-door fridge shows OF OF after a power outage and the store demo setting. Turning off Cooling Off mode fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Samsung fridge has frost on the freezer back wall and 21E. A tech replaces the defrost heater and sensor: R = $350; N = $2,000; no other repairs.
350 ÷ 2,000 = 18%; life used 7 ÷ 15 = 47%; repeat check 18% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 13-year-old Samsung fridge has a refrigerant leak, outside all coverage: R = $1,200; N = $1,800. It had a $400 control board last year.
1,200 ÷ 1,800 = 67%; life used 13 ÷ 15 = 87%; repeat check (1,200 + 400) ÷ 1,800 = 89% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system or compressor failure outside Samsung's coverage, repeated board and fan failures, rust, or a fridge past about 15 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, gasket, heater, or sensor; the fridge is in year 1 or an eligible extended period; or the compressor or sealed system is still inside Samsung's longer coverage.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the fridge, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

3. An electrician. If 83E/85E/86E/85C voltage codes keep returning, have the outlet and circuit checked.
4. DIY with the right part. Gaskets are DIY-friendly; fans and defrost parts are for confident DIYers with a multimeter. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the evaporator for frost and test the defrost heater and sensor?
- Is this covered by Samsung's sealed-system or compressor warranty?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Many plans cap refrigerant work and exclude food loss or pre-existing problems; read the terms before you buy.
FAQ
Why is my Samsung freezer not freezing but the fridge is cold?
Usually the freezer fan, frost on the evaporator, or a door that isn't sealing. Clear the vents, check the door, and look for frost on the back wall. Code 21E points at the freezer fan.
What temperature should a Samsung freezer be?
Samsung recommends -2°F for the freezer and 38°F for the fridge. The USDA says freezers should be at 0°F or below.
How long does a Samsung freezer take to get cold?
Samsung says up to 28 hours to reach the set temperature after a change or install, and the display can take up to 4 hours to update.
What does OF OF mean on a Samsung fridge?
Cooling Off (demo) mode: lights and display work, but nothing cools. Your manual lists the buttons to turn it off.
What does 21E mean on a Samsung fridge?
The freezer fan isn't turning, often because it's frozen up from a door left open or a gasket gap. Defrost and check the door; if it returns, request service.
Why is my Samsung ice cream soft?
Samsung says ice cream keeps best below 3°F. Set the freezer colder, keep the door shut, and keep the vents clear.
How much does it cost to fix a Samsung freezer that isn't freezing?
Fixr puts general freezer repair at $100 to $250. Samsung evaporator fan motors were listed at about $119 to $281 and defrost heaters at about $75 to $224 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Compressor and sealed-system repairs cost far more.
Should I replace a Samsung fridge whose freezer stopped freezing?
Not for a fan, gasket, heater, or sensor. Consider replacing if the compressor or sealed system fails outside Samsung's coverage on an older fridge.
