Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working? Ice Maker ON, 24-Hour Wait, Display Lock, Water Line, Filter, Prime & Purge, Frozen Auger, Ice Jam, Inlet Valve, Ice Maker Assembly — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)

Quick answer

First decide which problem you have: no ice being made, or ice in the bin that won't come out.

No ice being made — Frigidaire's checks:

  1. Ice maker ON. The ice maker's LED on the display should be lit.
  2. Give it 24 hours. Frigidaire says a newly plugged-in fridge, or one after a power outage, needs 24 hours to stabilize before it makes ice.
  3. Display not locked. A locked display won't dispense water or ice. Hold the lock key for 3 seconds to unlock.
  4. Water is getting there. If the dispenser gives no water, the ice maker gets none either. Check the water line is hooked up, the house valve is open, and the line isn't kinked behind the fridge.
  5. Filter. Seated correctly and securely; not frozen or cracked. Frigidaire recommends changing it every 6 months, and to prime and purge after a new one.
  6. Freezer cold enough. If production is low, Frigidaire says the freezer may be set too warm; set it colder and wait 24 hours.

Ice in the bin but nothing dispenses:

  1. Doors fully closed. The unit won't dispense with a door open.
  2. Held the paddle too long? A built-in shutoff stops the dispenser after 3 minutes of continuous use. Release and try again.
  3. Frozen auger or ice jam. Remove the bin, thaw and empty it, wipe it dry, and put it back. Or run Frigidaire's auger fix (below).

Still nothing? Likely parts: a water inlet valve, the auger motor, or the ice maker itself. Frigidaire says to go back to your installer if the fridge was installed in the last 30 days; after that, schedule service.

Which Frigidaire refrigerator do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label inside the fresh food section (usually on a side wall). You need it for the right filter, valve, and ice maker.

TypeModel prefix (examples)Where the ice maker isWhat to know
French doorOften FRFS / GRFS / PRFS (check label)Fresh food compartment or freezer, by modelDispenser models use an auger in the bin
Side by sideOften FRSS / GRSS (check label)Freezer door side; auger and binAuger can freeze from infrequent use
Top freezerOften FFTR (check label)Optional or factory ice maker in the freezerFrigidaire has a separate top-freezer ice maker guide

Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your Use & Care Guide shows where your ice maker switch is and whether you have Quick Freeze or Crushed/Cube controls.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Ice maker light on? Turn it ON at the display (or the ice maker's switch on some models).
  2. New install? Frigidaire says the ice maker can make ice within 24 hours after the fridge has cooled for several hours. Air in new lines can cause 2 or 3 empty ice cycles; prime the water system first.
  3. No water hooked up? Set the ice maker OFF, or its fill valve may make a loud chattering noise.
  4. Dispense some ice. Frigidaire says the ice maker fills the bin from the rear; you must dispense some to push ice forward so the bin can fill completely.
  5. Water dispenser test. No water = a water supply, filter, or valve problem, not the ice maker.
  6. Filter. Remove and reinstall it. If water dispenses slowly, or it's over 6 months old, replace it, then prime and purge.
  7. Line behind the fridge. Frigidaire notes the line can kink if the fridge is pushed too far against the wall.
  8. Door traffic. Heavy door opening slows ice production. Some models have Quick Freeze to boost it temporarily.

How to know it's fixed: you hear the ice maker fill and harvest, and the bin starts filling within a day.

Frigidaire's own pages (and a parts guide) give different steps

Frozen augerRemove the ice bin, thaw and empty it, wipe and dry it, put it backSwitch to CRUSHED, remove the bin, press the paddle for 2-minute intervals, 3 times (6 minutes) to melt ice around the auger shaft, switch to CUBE, reinsertNot covered
Dispenser stopped after a long pressShutoff after 3 minutes; release the paddle and resume—Release the paddle and wait 3 minutes for the overload to reset
How much ice to expectFrigidaire's "not making enough ice" FAQ: 2 to 3 pounds per 24 hours; bin holds about 4 pounds—2 to 5 pounds per 24 hours; up to 8 pounds with an Extra Ice setting

Our take: try the thaw-and-empty method first if the bin is clumped. If ice is stuck around the motor shaft at the back of the bin, run the auger fix. If the dispenser stopped after a long press, release it and wait a few minutes before trying again. For production, use Frigidaire's 2–3 pounds a day as your baseline unless your manual says your model makes more.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a refrigerator

Per the limited warranty printed in Frigidaire Use & Care manual A21785802 (April 2021; see Sources). Terms vary by model and year, so check your own manual:

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Electrolux pays all costs to repair or replace any part that proves defective in materials or workmanship, when installed, used and maintained per the instructionsFrigidaire / Electrolux
After year 1Not covered under that manual's warranty. Some older Frigidaire manuals listed extra limited coverage on the cabinet liner and sealed system. Check your manualDepends on your manual

What this means for an ice maker: a defective ice maker, inlet valve, or auger motor is covered in year 1. The warranty doesn't cover service calls that don't involve a defect, correcting installation, or teaching you how to use the appliance, so a locked display, a kinked line, air in the line, or a filter is usually on you. Filters are a consumable. Keep your receipt or delivery slip; for installs in the last 30 days, Frigidaire says go back to your installer first.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1; installer for the first 30 days; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: ON, 24 hours, unlock, doors, line, filter, prime, freezer colder, thaw the bin, auger fix.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the water reaches the ice maker.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Frigidaire / Electrolux part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "frigidaire …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. LG, Samsung, GE, Whirlpool, and Blomberg parts, Kenmore-labeled parts, caps, covers, plugs, brackets, harnesses, and washer valves in the same results were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators in general, not Frigidaire-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair.

Tip: tell the tech whether the water dispenser works. If it does, the valve and filter are probably fine and the ice maker is the suspect.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new refrigerator cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ water-line kit)
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 15 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace. A broken ice maker alone rarely justifies a new fridge: you can also just turn it off and use trays.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Frigidaire side-by-side stops dispensing ice after a week away. The bin is a solid block around the auger. Thawing and emptying the bin fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Frigidaire French door dispenses water but makes no ice; the ice maker has failed. A tech replaces it: R = $300; N = $2,000.
300 ÷ 2,000 = 15%; life used 7 ÷ 15 = 47%; repeat check 15% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 14-year-old Frigidaire needs an inlet valve and an auger motor, a year after a fan repair ($300): R = $450; N = $1,100.
450 ÷ 1,100 = 41%; life used 14 ÷ 15 = 93%; repeat check (450 + 300) ÷ 1,100 = 68% → Replace, or skip the ice repair and use trays.

Tips toward replacing: several water-system failures on an old fridge, plus cooling problems.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, valve, bin, or ice maker on a fridge under about 10 years old; or it's covered.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new refrigerator's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

FAQ

Why is my Frigidaire ice maker not making ice?
Frigidaire's checks: is the ice maker ON; has it had 24 hours after install or a power cut; is the display locked; is water reaching the fridge; is the filter seated, not frozen or cracked, and under 6 months old; is the freezer cold enough.

How do I reset my Frigidaire ice maker?
Frigidaire's articles don't describe a single reset button. For no ice, turn the ice maker off and on and wait 24 hours. For a frozen auger, use Frigidaire's auger fix: switch to Crushed, remove the bin, press the paddle in 2-minute intervals three times, switch back to Cube, and reinsert the bin.

Why is ice in my Frigidaire bin but not dispensing?
Check the doors are fully closed, and that you didn't trip the 3-minute dispenser shutoff. Then remove the bin, thaw and empty it, and reinstall it. When you put it back, don't rotate the auger; if you do, turn it in 45-degree steps until the bin fits.

How much ice should a Frigidaire make?
Frigidaire says about 2 to 3 pounds per 24 hours, and the bin holds about 4 pounds. Heavy door use slows production; Quick Freeze (on some models) speeds it up.

My new Frigidaire's ice maker isn't working. Is it broken?
Probably not. Frigidaire says to prime the water system first (air in new lines can cause 2 or 3 empty cycles) and allow up to 24 hours. Dispense some ice so the bin fills forward.

How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire ice maker?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Frigidaire ice maker assemblies were listed at about $87 to $266 and inlet valves at about $54 to $274. HomeGuide puts an ice maker replacement at $250 to $600.

Should I replace my Frigidaire if the ice maker is broken?
Rarely. An ice maker, valve, or auger motor is a small share of a new fridge's price. If the fridge is old and has other problems, you can also turn the ice maker off and use trays.
