LG Washer Not Spinning? LE, dE, CE, OE and SUD Fixes, LG's Spin Test β Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most LG washers that won't spin aren't broken. LG says spin performance depends on load size, objects in the drum, leveling, and only rarely a mechanical failure. A washer also won't spin until it drains, so a clogged drain filter or too many suds look exactly like a spin problem.
LG's no-spin checklist, in order:
- Read the display. An error code tells you where to look (table below). OE = drain problem, UE = unbalanced, LE / AE = motor or gear can't turn, dE = door or lid not locked, CE = motor control fault, SUD = too many suds.
- Redistribute the load. Tangled sheets or one heavy item on one side stop the spin. Pause, spread the load evenly, and resume.
- Check the washer is level. Rock it on diagonal corners; adjust the legs if it moves.
- Remove coins and objects caught around the drum or the wash plate. LG says a coin wedged between the tub and the washboard can lock a top-loader's motor or gear.
- Clean the drain pump filter (front-loaders) and check the drain hose height and kinks.
- Use HE detergent only in the right amount. Extra suds can add up to 2 hours and stop the spin.
- Run LG's spin test (below). If the empty drum still won't spin, LG says service is required.
If the checks don't fix it, the usual failed parts are the motor stator, the rotor position sensor, the door or lid lock, the drain pump, or the control board. LG says CE can't be fixed by troubleshooting.
Repair or replace? Most fixes are free. A Direct Drive motor part may be under LG's 10-year parts coverage. An old washer that needs a board plus a motor is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Spins fine empty but not with your load; UE, SUD, or OE showing | Load balance, suds, drain filter, hose | β Free fix. Rebalance, less detergent, clean the filter |
| Empty drum won't spin on LG's test; LE, AE, or dE keeps coming back with no object found | Motor stator, rotor position sensor, lid/door lock, gear (top-load) | π§ Usually worth repairing. Check LG's 10-year motor coverage first |
| CE code, grinding or banging with the drum stuck, or a board plus motor on a washer 10+ years old, or the second big repair in about 2 years | Motor control, bearings, multiple systems | β»οΈ Lean toward replacing. Run the calculator first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Water has reached the outlet, the power cord, or the floor around the plug. Switch off the washer's breaker before you unplug it.
- You smell burning, see smoke, or the breaker keeps tripping. Leave it off and call a technician (or an electrician if the outlet is scorched).
- The drum is full of hot water from a hot or Sanitize cycle. Let it cool before you open the drain pump filter.
- The washer is still under warranty (year 1 parts and labor; 10-year motor part). Use LG's warranty service before you open any panel.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which LG washer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame (front-load), under or behind the lid (top-load), or on the back.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Drain pump filter you can reach? | No-spin codes to know | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load | Often WM (e.g. WM3400, WM4000 families) | Yes, behind the service panel, bottom-left on many models | OE, UE, LE, CE, dE, SUD | Direct Drive motor on the back of the tub |
| Top-load | Often WT (e.g. WT7400, WT7900 families) | Usually no user-serviceable filter (check manual) | OE, UE, LE / LE1, AE, dE | Lid must lock before it spins |
| WashTower / combo | Often WKE / WKG / WM combo (check label) | Check your manual | LE, CE, UE, OE | Harder access; consider a pro |
Why a washer that won't drain also won't spin
A washer has to pump out the water before it can spin at speed. If the drain pump filter is clogged, the hose is kinked or too high, or suds are trapping air in the pump, the cycle stalls with wet clothes, often with OE or SUD. Fix the drain first.
- For the full drain fix, see our LG washer OE error guide.
- If it spins but stops with UE (unbalanced), see our LG washer UE error guide.
This page covers the case where the drum won't spin at all, or only turns slowly.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Check for a code and match it in the table below.
- Check the cycle. LG notes that if Pause is pressed, or Soak (or wash-only) is selected, the washer stops without draining or spinning. Pick Spin or Rinse + Spin and start again.
- Spread the load evenly. Pause, untangle sheets, and add or remove items so the weight is balanced. A single heavy item (bath mat, comforter) often can't balance; use the Bedding / Duvet cycle or a lower spin speed.
- Don't overload. LG says front-loaders balance best around 2/3 full, and an overloaded drum can strain the motor and trigger LE.
- Level the washer. Rock it on diagonal corners. If it rocks, adjust the legs with a wrench and lock them.
- Look for coins, zippers, and buttons around the drum gaps (front-load) or between the wash plate and tub (top-load). Remove them with pliers or tweezers with the washer off.
- Check the drain. Front-loaders: clean the drain pump filter (steps below). All models: hose not kinked, and the outlet no less than 34 inches and no higher than 96 inches above the floor on LG's guidance for standpipes (check your manual; some models differ). If you can't measure, LG says the hose loop should sit higher than the top of the drum to prevent siphoning.
- Check the detergent. LG washers are designed for HE detergent only. LG says use 2 tablespoons of regular HE, or 1 tablespoon of 2x-concentrated HE.
- Rest the motor if you've run loads back to back. LG says to wait 30 minutes to 1 hour between consecutive cycles so the motor can cool.
- Power reset. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in; LG says this can clear temporary electrical or communication errors.
LG's spin test (5 minutes)
LG's own test for a drum that won't spin:
- Press Power to turn the washer on.
- Press Rinse & Spin, then Start/Pause.
- Wait for the washer to fill and start the rinse agitation.
- Press Start/Pause to pause, then Power to turn it off.
- Press Power to turn it back on.
- Press Spin Speed to select a high spin speed. This runs a spin-only cycle.
- The drum spins properly: the washer is fine. LG says to adjust the load size and try again.
- The drum won't spin: LG says service is required for a proper diagnosis.
On front-loaders you can also listen during the spin-only cycle: a hum at the bottom means the drain pump is running. A pump that hums but water stays in means a clog; no hum and no drain points to the pump or its wiring.
How to know it's fixed: a full, balanced load finishes a normal cycle with no code, and clothes come out damp, not dripping.
How to clean the LG drain pump filter (front-load, 10β15 minutes)
- Turn the washer off and unplug it.
- Open the service panel at the bottom-left of the front.
- Unclip the small drain hose, hold it over a shallow pan, and remove its plug to drain the water. Don't pull the hose out too far or it will kink; LG says to push it back in about an inch if no water comes out. Expect to empty the pan several times.
- When the water stops, twist the pump filter counterclockwise and pull it out.
- Clean the filter and opening with a soft brush and warm water. Coins, hair ties, and lint are common.
- Cap the drain hose, clip it back, reinsert the filter firmly, and close the panel.
- Run a spin-only cycle to test.
Top-loaders: most LG top-loaders don't have a user-cleanable pump filter. Check the drain hose and, if the drum still won't drain or spin, request service.
LG washer codes that stop the spin
LG's US error-code lists (codes vary by model):
| Code | LG's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OE | Washer can't drain | Drain filter, drain hose, house drain; LG's OE guide. On many models, pressing Extra Rinse about 5 times until Spin Only lights starts a drain-and-spin |
| UE / uE / Ub | Unbalanced load, or load too small | Redistribute, add similar items, level the washer; see our UE guide |
| LE / LE1 | Motor locked: the drum can't turn | Remove coins or objects, reduce the load, rest the motor 30 min, unplug 5 min; if it repeats, service |
| AE (top-load) | The gear that spins the tub isn't working properly | Check for a coin between the wash plate and tub; if none, service |
| dE / dE1 / dE2 | Door or lid not locked. LG: a top-loader won't spin unless the lid is completely locked | Close firmly; clear clothing from the door seal; check for a broken latch; service if it repeats |
| CE | Drum didn't reach 20 RPM within 3 minutes or after 6 attempts; LG says the motor control is damaged | Can't be fixed by troubleshooting: request service |
| SUD / Sud | Too many suds; the washer stops spinning to prevent leaks and can add about 2 hours | Less HE detergent; run a rinse; on some models run Tub Clean |
| FF | Water frozen in the washer | Warm the room; LG suggests warm water in the drum and waiting 1β2 hours on some models |
| PF | Power failure during a cycle | Restart the cycle |
| CL | Child Lock on | Hold the Child Lock button about 3 seconds to unlock |
Diagnose by symptom β likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water taps. Drain any water through the pump filter hose first. Keep water away from the outlet and cord.
1. Empty drum won't spin on LG's test; LE or AE returns with no object found
Likely causes: a failed motor stator (the coils of LG's Direct Drive motor), a bad rotor position sensor (hall sensor) that tells the board where the rotor is, a damaged rotor magnet, or, on top-loaders, a worn gear/clutch (AE).
Signs: the washer agitates weakly or not at all; it tries to turn, stops, and shows LE; you may hear a click or hum but the drum doesn't move.
DIY difficulty: Moderate for the rotor position sensor (on the stator, behind the rear panel on front-loaders); advanced for the stator.
Call a pro if: the washer is within 10 years and the motor part may be covered (LG pays the part; you may pay labor after year 1), or it's a WashTower or combo.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Motor stator | Drives the drum (Direct Drive) | Advanced |
| Rotor position sensor | Tells the board the rotor's position | Moderate |
2. dE code, or the cycle won't advance to spin, with the door or lid closed
Likely causes: a failed door lock (front-load) or lid lock / switch assembly (top-load), a broken door strike, or clothing caught in the door.
Signs: you don't hear the lock click; dE shows at the start or right before spin; the lid-lock light blinks.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
Call a pro if: the lock is fine and dE persists (wiring or board).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Door lock (front-load) | Locks the door before the drum turns | Moderate |
| Lid lock and switch (top-load) | Locks the lid before spin | Moderate |
3. OE keeps returning with a clean filter and a good hose; no pump hum
Likely causes: a failed drain pump, or a sock lodged deeper in the pump housing.
Signs: silence during spin-only; water stays in the drum.
DIY difficulty: Moderate on most front-loaders.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pumps water out so the drum can spin | Moderate |
4. CE code, or the washer is dead mid-cycle after a power event
Likely causes: the motor control on the main control board (LG says CE means the motor control component is damaged), or a wiring fault between the board and the motor.
DIY difficulty: Advanced. Diagnose first; boards are expensive and not returnable at many sellers.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Main control board (PCB) | Runs the motor and the cycle | Moderate; diagnose first |
Is it the stator, the sensor, or the board? They cause the same symptom. A technician can test the motor windings and the sensor in one visit before you buy a $250+ part.

Prevent the next no-spin
- Check pockets and wash small items in a mesh bag. Coins and underwires cause LE and AE.
- Use HE detergent, 2 tablespoons (1 for 2x concentrate).
- Load to about 2/3; use Bedding / Duvet for bulky items.
- Clean the drain pump filter regularly on front-loaders.
- Give the motor a break between back-to-back loads.
- Re-level after moving the washer or adding a pedestal.
What LG's warranty covers on a washer
LG's 2026 US washer limited warranty (the version for many current models):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor | LG |
| Up to 3 years | Stainless steel tub (part only) | You |
| Up to 10 years | Direct Drive Motor (part only) | You |
What this means for a washer that won't spin: the stator and rotor are motor parts, so check whether your model's 10-year coverage applies before you pay for the part; you'd still pay labor after year 1. Door locks, pumps, sensors, and boards are covered in year 1 only on this warranty. Problems from installation (an unlevel washer, a drain hose set wrong) and coins or objects in the drum usually aren't defects. Some LG models carry different terms; check your model. Keep your proof of purchase.
β Check your model's warranty on LG's site Β· Request a repair
Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts and labor, the 10-year motor part coverage, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Run LG's spin test first. If the empty drum spins, it isn't a part failure.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the motor part is covered.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are OEM LG part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general, not LG-specific quotes. "Varies β get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Pro-cost cells tagged [GUIDE] from G1 (Fixr) and G2 (HomeGuide), re-read 2026-10-30; [GUIDE] figures are national averages, not LG-specific quotes. Fixr lists an average LG washer repair of $225β$300. Prices change; confirm with your model number.
Tip: drain the washer through the pump filter hose before the technician arrives, and tell them the code and whether the empty-drum spin test worked.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? β R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything LG's warranty (year 1, or the 10-year motor part) or a recall covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? β N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? β Age and Life (use about 10β11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8β13-year average for washers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? β Past
Step A β Cost ratio: R Γ· N
Step B β Life used: Age Γ· Life
Step C β Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) Γ· N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | β Repair | π€ Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | π€ Get a second quote first | β Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old LG front-load shows LE. A coin is wedged in the drum gap. R = $0.
β Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG front-load fails LG's spin test with LE. The tech finds a failed stator; LG's 10-year coverage pays the part, so you pay labor and the trip: R = $200; N = $1,000.
200 Γ· 1,000 = 20%; life used 6 Γ· 11 = 55%; repeat check 20% β Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG top-load shows CE, and the tech also finds worn bearings. It had a $300 pump last year. R = $650; N = $850.
650 Γ· 850 = 76%; life used 11 Γ· 11 = 100%; repeat check (650 + 300) Γ· 850 = over 100% β Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board plus a motor, bearing noise or a leaking tub on top of the no-spin problem, a washer past about 10 years, or rust.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, lock, sensor, or pump; the washer is in year 1; the motor part is inside LG's 10-year coverage; or it's part of a matched stacked set.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50β60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you run a spin-only test with the drum empty?
- Is it the stator, the rotor position sensor, or the board? How did you test it?
- Is the motor part covered by LG's 10-year warranty on my model?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude damage from foreign objects and installation problems, and a washer that's already broken is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my LG washer not spinning?
LG says spin depends on load size, objects caught in the drum, leveling, and only rarely a mechanical failure. Check the code, spread the load, level the washer, remove coins, and clean the drain filter. A washer that can't drain won't spin.
How do I test the spin on an LG washer?
LG's test: Power, Rinse & Spin, Start/Pause; let it fill and start the rinse; pause and turn it off; turn it back on and press Spin Speed to select high for a spin-only cycle. If the drum still won't spin, LG says service is required.
What does LE mean on an LG washer?
LG says LE means the motor is locked and the drum can't turn, often from an overload, back-to-back cycles, or a coin caught around the tub. Remove objects, reduce the load, unplug for 5 minutes, and wait 30 minutes to an hour between cycles.
What does CE mean on an LG washer?
LG says the drum didn't reach 20 RPM within 3 minutes or 6 attempts, and the motor control is damaged. It can't be fixed by troubleshooting; request service.
Why won't my LG top-load washer spin with the lid closed?
LG says a top-loader won't spin unless the lid is completely locked (dE). Close it firmly, check the latch, and look for AE or LE codes, which point to a coin under the wash plate or a gear or motor problem.
Can too much detergent stop an LG washer from spinning?
Yes. LG says excess suds can add up to 2 hours to a cycle and the washer may stop spinning to prevent leaks (SUD). Use 2 tablespoons of HE detergent, or 1 for 2x concentrate.
Is the LG washer motor covered for 10 years?
On LG's 2026 US laundry limited warranty, the Direct Drive Motor is covered for 10 years, part only. Check your model's warranty; you'd still pay labor after year 1.
How much does it cost to fix an LG washer that won't spin?
Often nothing. If a part has failed, OEM LG rotor position sensors were listed at about $40 to $54 and stators at about $153 to $424 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Cost guides put a pro motor job at $300 to $700 for washers in general.
