Kenmore Washer Not Draining? Model Prefix (110 / 796 / 417), Drain Hose Depth, Standpipe, Suds, Small Items in the Pump, Pump Filter, Lid Lock, Drain Pump — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, a Kenmore-specific step: check who built your washer. Kenmore has never made its own washers. Parts retailers list the first three digits of the model number (before the dot) as the maker: 110. = Whirlpool, 796. = LG, 417. = Frigidaire. Parts and drain rules follow the maker. We label which facts come from which platform.
Then the free fixes. A Kenmore 110-series use-and-care guide lists these for "not draining/spinning, loads still wet, or spin light on":
- Drain hose too deep. The hose shouldn't go more than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe. Use the hose form and secure it.
- Taped or sealed in? Don't tape over the drain opening. The drain needs air.
- Hose end too high. Lower it if the end is more than 96 inches above the floor.
- Clogs. Clear the hose. If the house drain or laundry tub backs up, that's a plumbing clog, not the washer.
- Too many suds. Kenmore says too much detergent can slow or stop draining and spinning. Use HE detergent, measure it, and run Rinse/Spin (no detergent) to clear suds.
- Small items in the pump. Socks and small items can catch in the pump or between the basket and tub and slow draining. Empty pockets; use garment bags.
- Lid. The lid must be closed. A flashing Lid Locked light means it isn't, or the basket is still slowing down after a pause.
What the spin light means: on that guide, a spin light that stays on means the washer couldn't pump the water out within 10 minutes.
Front-load Kenmore (often 796 or 417)? Many front-loads have a drain pump filter behind a small panel at the bottom front. LG says to clean its filter yourself; Frigidaire's front-load guide says coins or pins in the pump are a job for an authorized servicer (see the side-by-side table).
If those don't fix it, the parts that usually fail are the drain pump, a lid lock or door lock, the pressure switch, or the control board.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Hose pushed deep into the standpipe or taped; hose kinked; laundry tub backing up; lots of suds; spin light on after a big load | Hose, standpipe, house drain, or suds | ✅ Free fix |
| Pump hums but water stays; a sock or coin went missing; front-load filter clogged; Lid Locked light flashing with the lid shut | Clog in the pump or filter, lid lock | ✅ / 🔧 Free to cheap |
| Pump silent; codes return after the hose and filter are clear; washer 8+ years old and this is the second big repair in about 2 years | Drain pump, pressure switch, or control board | 🔧 Usually worth repairing for a pump; ♻️ lean toward replacing for a board on an older washer |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Unplug the washer before you remove the drain hose, open a filter panel, or open any panel.
- Water may be hot. Let it cool. Have towels and a shallow pan ready; a front-load holds a lot of water behind the filter.
- Never bypass the lid lock or lid switch.
- Burning smell, or the breaker trips. Stop. A 2009 recall covered drain pumps that could overheat in some Kenmore laundry centers (see "Recalls").
- In year 1? Kenmore's warranty covers free repair; call before you open panels. Kenmore excludes problems with house plumbing.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Kenmore washer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label (on most top-loads, under the lid or on the back; on front-loads, around the door opening). Kenmore's warranty won't pay if the model and serial plate is missing or altered.
| Model starts with | Built by | Common type | Drain notes for that platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| 110. | Whirlpool | Most Kenmore top-loads; some front-loads | Kenmore's own 110-series guide applies. Our Maytag washer not draining guide shares the Whirlpool platform |
| 796. | LG | Many Kenmore and Kenmore Elite front-loads and some top-loads | LG-style drain pump filter on front-loads; see LG washer not draining |
| 417. | Frigidaire (Electrolux) | Some Kenmore front-loads and top-loads | Frigidaire-style standpipe rules; see Frigidaire washer not draining |
Labeling note: Kenmore's US website publishes warranties and manuals, but not model-by-model drain troubleshooting. The prefix-to-maker mapping comes from parts retailers (sources 4 and 5), not an official Kenmore table. LG and Frigidaire facts on this page come from LG's and Frigidaire's own support pages and manuals for their washers. Your Kenmore manual (Kenmore's manual lookup is linked below) always wins.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Model prefix: 110, 796, or 417?
- Lid closed? Run Drain/Spin and listen. A hum with no water moving points to a clog; silence points to the pump, lid lock, or board.
- Bucket test: pull the hose out of the standpipe, hold it low over a bucket, and run Drain/Spin. Water pouring out means the washer works and the house drain is the problem (LG recommends this same test).
- Hose depth: measure how far the hose goes into the standpipe.
- Suds: a tub full of foam means too much detergent. Rinse/Spin with no detergent.
- Front-load: look for a small access panel at the bottom front. If there's a filter, drain it into a pan and clean it.
- Missing sock? Small items are a common pump jam (Kenmore guide).
How to know it's fixed: a Drain/Spin empties the tub and the clothes come out damp, not soaking.
What the makers say vs. each other (Kenmore 110 guide, LG, Frigidaire)
Because a Kenmore can be built by three companies, the drain rules in their manuals don't line up:
| Kenmore 110-series guide (Whirlpool-built) | LG (796 platform; LG's own manuals and support) | Frigidaire (417 platform; Frigidaire's own guides) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How far the hose goes into the standpipe | No more than 4.5 in (114 mm) | No more than 8 in (LG top-load manual) | Don't fit it too tightly; leave an air path |
| Hose height or standpipe height | Lower the hose if its end is higher than 96 in | Hose end at least 29 in and no higher than 96 in (LG top-load manual) | Standpipe no more than 96 in; minimum 36 in (top-load guide) or 23.6 in (front-load guide); at least 1¼ in across |
| Something stuck in the pump | Small items can catch in the pump; empty pockets | Clean the drain pump filter yourself (front-load), about monthly; hot-water warning | Coins or pins in the pump: call your authorized servicer (front-load guide) |
| Suds | Too much detergent slows or stops draining; Rinse/Spin | Excess suds make air pockets the pump can't move; run Tub Clean, use less | Too much detergent can slow draining; don't fill past the max line |
Our take: follow the column for your prefix, and your own Kenmore manual first. Never push a hose deeper than your manual allows. If you don't know your prefix, 4.5 inches satisfies all three.
Kenmore drain signs and what they point to
Kenmore codes vary by maker and model. Your manual lists the codes for your display.
| Sign | What the maker's guide says | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spin light stays on (110 guide) | Couldn't pump out the water within 10 minutes | Hose depth, kinks, clogs, suds | Drain pump | Easy → Advanced |
| Lid Locked light flashing (110 guide) | Lid not closed, or basket still slowing after a pause | Close the lid; wait | Lid lock | Easy → Advanced |
| OE (some 796 LG-built front-loads) | LG's drain error | Clean the pump filter; check the hose | Drain pump | Moderate → Advanced |
| E2 (some 417 Frigidaire-built top-loads) | Frigidaire: water takes too long to drain | Hose, standpipe, lid | Drain pump, lid lock | Easy → Advanced |
| Water stays, pump hums | Clog in the pump, filter, or hose | Bucket test; clean filter; clear hose | Pump | Moderate |
| Water stays, no pump sound | Pump, lid lock, or board not running it | Check the lid is fully closed | Pump, lid lock, board | Advanced → Pro |
Which part each symptom points at:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|
| Hum, no draining, filter and hose clear | Drain pump (jammed or failing) | Moderate → Advanced |
| Front-load filter full of lint or coins | Drain pump filter | Moderate |
| Hose cracked, flattened, or clogged | Drain hose | Moderate |
| Won't drain or spin, Lid Locked light misbehaving | Lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load) | Advanced |
| Drains partway, then stops, with water-level problems | Pressure switch | Advanced |
| No response, codes return after every fix | Control board | Pro only |
Kenmore checks from the Kenmore 110-series guide (source 2). LG and Frigidaire rows come from those makers' own pages for their own washers (sources 6–8) and apply to Kenmore models built on those platforms. The part mapping is our own from these guides and the Sears PartsDirect catalog.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer. Drain or bail standing water. Have towels and a shallow pan ready.
1. Pump hums but water won't leave
Likely cause: a sock, coin, or lint jam in the drain pump or its filter, or a clogged drain hose. Kenmore's guide says small items can catch in the pump.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump filter (many front-loads) | Catches coins and lint before the pump | Moderate |
| Drain hose | Carries water to the standpipe | Moderate |
2. Pump silent or weak after the clogs are cleared
Likely cause: a failed drain pump. Match the pump to your model's maker: Whirlpool-family numbers for 110, LG numbers for 796, Frigidaire numbers for 417.
DIY difficulty: Moderate → Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pumps water out of the tub | Moderate → Advanced |
3. Won't drain or spin, and the lid light misbehaves
Likely cause: a failed lid lock or lid switch (top-load) or door lock (front-load). The washer won't run the drain-and-spin step if it can't confirm the lid is locked.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Lid lock / lid switch / door lock | Locks the lid or door and tells the board it's closed | Advanced |
4. Drains partway, odd water levels, or codes that return
Likely cause: a pressure switch (water-level sensor) or the control board.
DIY difficulty: Advanced → Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure switch | Senses the water level | Advanced |
| Control board | Runs the pump and cycle | Pro only |
Hose, filter, and suds all fine, still full of water? A technician can test the pump, lid lock, switch, and board in one visit.

Recalls
We searched the CPSC site on 2026-10-30 and found two recalls that name Kenmore washers:
- July 30, 2009 — drain pump fire hazard (Frigidaire-made): about 35,000 washers and laundry centers, including Kenmore laundry centers listed as 97812, 97912, 97962, C97812, C97912, and C97962 (serials XE85104013 to XE91603486; not every serial in the range is affected). An internal defect in the drain pump could build up heat. Remedy: stop using it and get a free repair. Kenmore contact through Transform: 800-659-7026. This one is directly about the drain pump.
- December 18, 2012 — drum can come loose (LG-made): about 457,000 top-loads, including Kenmore Elite 29002, 29272, and 29278 (serials 005KW through 111KW). Unbalanced loads can make the drum shake loose. Remedy: free in-home repair. Same Transform number.
If your model and serial match, use the recall remedy, not a paid repair. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
Prevent it next time
- Empty pockets and wash socks and small items in garment bags (Kenmore).
- Measure HE detergent; too much makes suds that stop draining.
- Keep the hose at the right depth for your platform, never taped in.
- Front-load: clean the drain pump filter regularly if your model has one (LG says about monthly for its washers).
- Don't overload; the 110 guide says tightly packed loads may not spin correctly.

What Kenmore's warranty covers on a washer
Per the Kenmore warranty information page on kenmore.com (Washers; the warrantor is a Transformco subsidiary, and your washer's use-and-care guide has the version that applies to your purchase):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from the date of original sale) | Free repair of defects in material or workmanship; replacement if it can't be repaired | Kenmore |
| Lifetime (purchases on or after February 4, 2018) | Free replacement drive motor only | You, after year 1 |
| Non-household use | Coverage drops to 90 days | — |
What this means for a washer that won't drain: a failed drain pump, lid lock, pressure switch, or board in year 1 is a free repair. The lifetime motor coverage doesn't cover the drain pump. Kenmore excludes service calls to instruct you, and problems with house fuses, circuit breakers, wiring, or plumbing, so a clogged standpipe isn't covered. You need proof of original sale.

How we price this table: DIY part prices are part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "kenmore washer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. We group them by maker (Whirlpool-family for 110, LG for 796, Frigidaire for 417) because the right part depends on who built your washer. GE (WH…), Samsung (DC…), dishwasher, pressure-washer, cover, plug, connector, clip, bracket, and hose-only listings were excluded unless named. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general, not Kenmore-specific quotes.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Kenmore's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (HomeGuide says washers last 8–13 years; use 10 if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. HomeGuide adds that replacing is usually cheaper when a washer is 7 to 10 years old and needs frequent repairs. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Kenmore 110 top-load leaves the spin light on. The drain hose was pushed 12 inches into the standpipe. You pull it back to 4.5 inches with the hose form. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Kenmore 796 front-load hums but won't drain; the filter is clear. A tech replaces the drain pump: R = $300; N = $1,000.
300 ÷ 1,000 = 30%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Kenmore 417 front-load needs a control board ($450 quote) a year after a door lock ($200): N = $800.
450 ÷ 800 = 56% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 10 ÷ 10 = 100%; repeat check (450 + 200) ÷ 800 = 81% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board on an older washer, repeat repairs, or parts no longer sold for your model.
Tips toward repairing: it's a clog, filter, hose, pump, or lid lock; the washer is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb for appliances. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the pump and filter for a sock or coin before replacing the pump?
- Is the part a Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire number that matches my model prefix?
- Is my model in the 2009 pump recall or the 2012 Kenmore Elite recall?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude clogs caused by foreign objects, plumbing, and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why is my Kenmore washer not draining?
Kenmore's 110-series guide lists: the drain hose pushed more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, tape over the drain, a hose end over 96 inches high, clogs, too much detergent, and small items caught in the pump.
Who made my Kenmore washer?
Parts retailers list 110 = Whirlpool, 796 = LG, and 417 = Frigidaire, from the first three digits of the model number.
What does the spin light mean on my Kenmore washer?
On Kenmore's 110-series guide, a spin light that stays on means the washer couldn't pump the water out within 10 minutes.
Does my Kenmore washer have a drain pump filter?
Many front-loads do, behind a small panel at the bottom front. Most top-loads don't have one you can reach. Check your manual.
How do I drain a Kenmore washer full of water?
Unplug it, then lower the drain hose into a bucket or floor drain, or, on a front-load, drain through the filter's small drain hose into a shallow pan. Expect a lot of water.
How much does it cost to fix a Kenmore washer that won't drain?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Whirlpool-family drain pumps for 110 models listed at about $28 to $82. Fixr puts a pump replacement at $300 to $400 and HomeGuide at $150 to $350.
