Frigidaire Washer Not Draining? Top Load or Front Load — E2, Lid Closed, Drain Hose, Standpipe Height, Tape, Suds, Pump, Lid Lock — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most Frigidaire drain problems are the hose, the standpipe, or the lid. Frigidaire's US owner support articles and owner's guides list these checks, cheapest first:
- Lid closed, then Start/Pause. Frigidaire says that for safety the washer won't spin unless the lid is closed. Close it and press Start/Pause.
- Breaker or fuse. Check the washer's circuit.
- Drain hose. Straighten kinks and clear clogs.
- Standpipe. Frigidaire's slow-drain article says the standpipe can't be more than 96 inches high and must be at least 1¼ inches in diameter. Its owner's guides set a minimum height too, and the two guides disagree (see the side-by-side table below).
- No airtight seal. If the drain hose is taped or sealed into the standpipe, Frigidaire says to open an air path. The standpipe needs air to drain properly, so don't fit the hose too tightly.
- Detergent. Too much detergent can slow draining. Use the recommended amount, and don't fill dispenser compartments past the max line. Front-loads need low-sudsing HE detergent.
- New install or recently moved (last 30 days)? Frigidaire says to contact your installer.
E2 on a top-load means water takes too long to drain or isn't draining properly (Frigidaire).
If those don't fix it, Frigidaire says a clogged pump may need service. The parts that usually fail are the drain pump, the lid lock (Frigidaire: "Do not bypass lid lock. Call your authorized servicer"), the pressure switch, or the control board.
Repair or replace? Hose and standpipe fixes are free. A pump or lid lock is usually worth fixing; a control board on an older washer is the main "think about replacing" case.

Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Lid open, a kinked hose, hose taped into the standpipe, a slow house drain, too much detergent, a new install | Use or installation | ✅ Free fix (installer if under 30 days) |
| E2 or water left in the tub with the hose and drain clear; pump hums but no water moves; drain and spin didn't happen | Clogged or failed drain pump, lid lock | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Codes return after a new pump, the display acts up, washer 10+ years old with a second big repair | Control board, pressure switch, wiring | ♻️ Lean toward replacing an old washer; get a quote first on a newer one |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Unplug the washer before any user maintenance. Frigidaire's guide says canceling a cycle or turning the power off at the console doesn't disconnect the washer from power.
- Don't force the lid or door, and never bypass the lid lock. Frigidaire says to call an authorized servicer for a lid lock malfunction.
- Hot water inside. Let a hot wash cool before you bail water or open anything at the bottom.
- Coins or objects in the pump. Frigidaire's front-load guide says to call an authorized servicer if objects may be in the pump.
- Installed or moved in the last 30 days? Frigidaire sends drain problems on new installs back to the installer.
- The washer is in year 1. Frigidaire's warranty covers parts that fail from a defect for a year.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners. Keep towels and a bucket handy.

Which Frigidaire washer do you have?
Frigidaire puts the serial plate under the lid on its top-load washers and inside the door opening on front-loaders. You need the model number for parts and the right guide.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Drain path | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-load | Often FFTW (check label) | Pump at the bottom, hose to standpipe | E2 = too long to drain; standpipe at least 36 in (top-load guide) |
| Front-load | Often FFFW / FFFS (check label) | Pump at the front bottom; filter on some models | Standpipe at least 23.6 in (front-load guide) |
| Laundry center | Often FLCE / FLCG (check label) | Separate laundry-center pump | Frigidaire has a separate laundry-center article |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's guide shows your codes, cycles, and whether your model has a user-cleanable pump filter.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Lid. Close it fully and press Start/Pause. Frigidaire says it won't spin with the lid open.
- Power. Check the breaker or fuse. Unplug and replug the washer.
- Drain hose. Pull the washer out carefully. Straighten kinks; disconnect and flush the hose into a bucket if it's clogged.
- Standpipe fit. If the hose is taped or sealed in, remove some tape to make an air path. Frigidaire says the hose shouldn't fit too tightly.
- Standpipe size. At least 1¼ inches across and no more than 96 inches high (Frigidaire article).
- House drain. Pour a bucket of water down the standpipe or laundry sink. If it backs up, it's your plumbing. Frigidaire: unclog drain pipes, contact a plumber if necessary.
- Detergent. Too much slows draining (Frigidaire). Cut back, and on a front-load use low-sudsing HE detergent.
- Drain the tub. Front-load: Frigidaire's guide says use the spin only cycle any time you want to drain water. Top-load: use your drain-and-spin cycle.
- Watch and listen. Frigidaire's front-load guide says humming and gurgling while draining are normal pump sounds. Silence with water in the tub, or rattling, points to the pump.
How to know it's fixed: a full cycle ends with no standing water and clothes spun damp, not dripping.
Standpipe height: Frigidaire's guides give different minimums
Frigidaire's documents agree on the maximum but not the minimum standpipe height:
| Frigidaire Top Load Washer guide (A29259301, 2024) | Frigidaire Front Load Washer guide (FFFS5115P) | Frigidaire article "What should I do if my washer is draining slowly?" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum height | 36 in (90 cm) "to prevent siphoning" | 23.6 in (60 cm) | Not stated |
| Maximum height | Not stated in the troubleshooting table | 8 ft (2.4 m) | 96 in |
| Diameter | — | — | At least 1¼ in |
| Symptom if too low | Water enters but the tub doesn't fill (siphoning) | Same | — |
Our take: use the number in your own model's installation instructions. If a too-low standpipe is siphoning water out (the tub won't fill), raise it; if a tall standpipe or long run is slowing the drain, keep it under 96 inches. On a recent install, Frigidaire sends this back to the installer.
Frigidaire codes and signs linked to "not draining"
| Code or sign | Frigidaire's explanation | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E2 (top-load; may show "2") | Water takes too long to drain or isn't draining properly | Breaker; standpipe; close lid, Start/Pause; straighten or unclog the hose | Contact service (installer if within 30 days) | Easy → Pro only |
| Drain takes more than 10 minutes (top-load guide) | Drain timeout | See "Does not drain or spin" in the guide | Pump | Easy → Advanced |
| Water left in the tub after the cycle; drain and spin didn't occur | Lid lock malfunction (top-load guide) | — | Don't bypass; call an authorized servicer | Pro only |
| Load too wet after spin | Overloaded, out of balance, or kinked drain hose | Remove items, rearrange, straighten hose | Pump | Easy |
| Rattling or clanking (front-load) | Coins or pins in the drum or pump | Check the drum | Objects in pump: call a servicer | Easy → Pro only |
Which part each symptom points at:
| Symptom | Part most often involved | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|
| Hose clear, drain clear, no pump sound | Drain pump or its wiring | Advanced |
| Pump hums, little or no water moves | Clog in the pump or filter; then the pump | Moderate → Advanced |
| Drain and spin skipped, water left | Lid lock | Advanced |
| Fills or drains at the wrong time | Pressure switch (water level) | Advanced |
| Codes after a new pump, erratic controls | Control board | Pro only |
Codes and steps from Frigidaire US owner support articles and owner's guides (sources 1–5), checked 2026-10-30. Third-party sites describe a front-load E21 "slow drain" code; we didn't find it in the Frigidaire guides we read, so check your own guide. The part mapping is our own from those pages and the Frigidaire/Electrolux part catalog. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 13) has no Frigidaire washer entries, so we didn't use it here.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer (the console Power button doesn't disconnect it). Let hot water cool. Bail or drain the tub into a bucket. Have towels ready.
1. Water stays in the tub; no pump sound
Likely causes: a failed drain pump, a jammed pump, or a lid lock that won't let the drain and spin run.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pumps water out of the tub | Advanced |
2. Pump hums, but water drains slowly or not at all
Likely causes: a clog: a sock, coins, or lint in the pump or its filter, a clogged drain hose, or a slow house drain. On a front-load if your guide shows a pump-filter door, drain the water into a pan and clean the filter as your guide describes. Frigidaire's slow-drain article says a suspected clogged pump may need service, and its FFFS5115P guide says objects in the pump call for an authorized servicer.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (filter, if your model has one) · Advanced (pump).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump filter (some front-loads) | Catches lint and small objects | Moderate |
| Drain hose | Carries water to the standpipe | Easy |
3. Drain and spin skipped; water left at the end
Likely cause: a lid lock malfunction (top-load guide). Frigidaire says don't bypass it; call an authorized servicer.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Lid lock / door lock | Locks the lid for spin and confirms it's closed | Advanced |
4. Wrong water levels, or codes after the pump was replaced
Likely causes: the pressure switch (water level sensor), its hose, or the control board.
DIY difficulty: Advanced (switch) · Pro only (board).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water-level pressure switch | Tells the control how much water is in the tub | Advanced |
| Control board | Runs the pump, lock, and motor | Pro only |
Water still sitting after every check? A technician can test the pump, lid lock, and switch in one visit.

DIY pump cleaning: what Frigidaire says vs. third-party guides
| Frigidaire (article 1853030; FFFS5115P guide) | Third-party repair guides (not Frigidaire) | |
|---|---|---|
| Clogged pump | "If you suspect your pump is clogged – you may need to contact service" | iFixit's front-load guide (written around a Frigidaire) walks through removing the lower panel, cleaning the coin trap, and clearing the pump yourself |
| Objects in the pump | Call your authorized servicer | Same guides clear them by hand with the washer unplugged |
Our take: clean a pump filter yourself only if your owner's guide shows one and how to reach it. Opening the cabinet to reach the pump is an Advanced job; if you're in year 1, use Frigidaire service.
Prevent it next time
- Measure detergent, and on a front-load use low-sudsing HE (Frigidaire).
- Don't fill dispenser compartments past the max line.
- Empty pockets. Coins and pins end up in the pump (Frigidaire).
- Don't tape the drain hose airtight into the standpipe.
- Keep the house drain clear, and the drain hose free of kinks when you push the washer back.
- Don't overload, and balance the load.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a washer
Per the Frigidaire/Electrolux US owner's guides (see Sources):
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | All parts that fail from a defect in materials or workmanship | Frigidaire/Electrolux |
| Wash tub (front-load FFFS5115P guide) | Replacement tub for its functional life | You (no labor) |
| Years 2–10: wash tub drive motor (front-load FFFS5115P guide) | Replacement motor | You (no labor) |
What this means for a drain problem: in year 1, a pump, lid lock, pressure switch, or board is covered. After year 1, drain parts are out of pocket. Frigidaire doesn't cover visits for installation problems or instructions on using the product, and its E2 article sends washers installed or moved in the last 30 days back to the installer. Terms vary by model, so check the guide that came with your washer.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1 parts; retailer or credit-card extended protection; installer if installed in the last 30 days.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Free fixes done: lid, breaker, hose, tape, standpipe, house drain, detergent, drain cycle.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech found a clog before quoting a new pump.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Frigidaire/Electrolux part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "frigidaire washer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; Crosley-labeled and laundry-center parts, dishwasher parts, other brands, brackets, clips, bezels, and strikes were excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general unless marked, not Frigidaire-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Tip: if you can hear the pump hum but no water moves, say so when you book. It points to a clog rather than a dead pump.
Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A newly installed Frigidaire top-load shows E2. The installer had taped the drain hose airtight into the standpipe. Removing some tape to let air in fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Frigidaire front-load leaves water in the drum; the pump has failed. A tech replaces it: R = $320; N = $1,000; no other repairs.
320 ÷ 1,000 = 32%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 32% → Repair (life used is over half, so check for other wear first).
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Frigidaire top-load needs a control board after a pump last year: R = $450; N = $800; the pump cost $300.
450 ÷ 800 = 56%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = 110%; repeat check (450 + 300) ÷ 800 = 94% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a control board on a washer past about 10 years, repeated drain repairs, or parts no longer available.
Tips toward repairing: it's a clog, hose, pump, lid lock, or pressure switch; the washer is under about 6 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.
Who services Frigidaire washers near you
1. Frigidaire (warranty). In year 1, start with Frigidaire. If the washer was installed or moved in the last 30 days, Frigidaire says to contact the installer first.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. Tell them top-load or front-load, any code (E2), whether the pump hums, and your model number.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A plumber. For a standpipe or house drain that backs up. Frigidaire: "Contact plumber if necessary."
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the hose, standpipe, and tape before testing the pump?
- Was there a clog, or did the pump fail?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude clogs from foreign objects and installation problems, and a washer that's already failing is usually not covered.
FAQ
Why is my Frigidaire washer not draining?
Frigidaire's checks: close the lid and press Start/Pause (it won't spin with the lid open), check the breaker, straighten or unclog the drain hose, check the standpipe height, remove airtight tape so air can get in, and use the right amount of detergent. If the pump is clogged, Frigidaire says you may need service.
What does E2 mean on a Frigidaire washer?
On a Frigidaire top-load, E2 means water takes too long to drain or isn't draining properly. Frigidaire says check the fuse or breaker, the standpipe height, close the lid and press Start/Pause, and straighten or unclog the drain hose. Installed in the past 30 days? Contact the installer.
How high should the standpipe be for a Frigidaire washer?
Frigidaire's slow-drain article says no more than 96 inches and at least 1¼ inches in diameter. For the minimum, its top-load guide says 36 inches and its FFFS5115P front-load guide says 23.6 inches, so use your model's installation instructions.
Can too much detergent stop a Frigidaire washer from draining?
Yes. Frigidaire says too much detergent can inhibit draining. Use the recommended amount and don't fill dispenser compartments past the max line.
How do I drain my Frigidaire washer?
Frigidaire's front-load guide says to use the spin only cycle any time you want to drain water. Unplug before you do any maintenance.
Why is there water left in my Frigidaire top load washer?
The top-load guide lists a lid lock malfunction when water is left after the cycle or the drain and spin didn't happen. Don't bypass the lid lock; call an authorized servicer.
How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire washer that won't drain?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Frigidaire washer drain pumps were listed at about $122 to $217. Fixr puts a washer that won't drain at $150 to $300 to fix.
Should I replace a Frigidaire washer that won't drain?
Rarely for a clog, hose, pump, or lid lock. Consider it for a control board on an older washer, or when repeat repairs pass half the price of a new one.

Fix It or Replace is an independent site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Frigidaire or Electrolux. "Frigidaire" is a trademark of its owner and is used here only to describe the products we cover.
- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug the washer before working on it; the console Power button doesn't disconnect it. Never bypass the lid lock. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
We don't publish fake reviews or testimonials, and we never present a tracking phone number as a specific local business.
