Whirlpool Washer Won't Drain? F9 E1, drn, Pump Filter, Drain Hose โ Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
First, run Drain & Spin (some models call it Rinse & Spin). Whirlpool says that's the first step when water is left in the tub, and many "won't drain" calls are really a slow-spin cycle, an off-balance load, or too many suds.
Whirlpool's most common causes, in its own order:
- Lid or door not closed properly, so the washer won't drain or spin.
- Unbalanced or overloaded load. Redistribute and reduce the load.
- Low or No Spin selected (gentle, delicate, handwash). Pick a higher spin.
- Excessive suds. Use HE detergent and measure it.
- Drain hose installation: kinked or clogged, taped into the standpipe, pushed more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, or a standpipe that's too high (over 96 in) or too low.
- Front-load drain pump filter clogged (on models that have one): it sits behind the bottom drawer or access panel.
Codes to know: F9 E1 (front-load: drain taking longer than about 8 minutes), drn (top-load: not draining properly), F0 E8 (top-load: water left in the tub), Sud / Sd (too many suds).
Still full of water after all that? The likely parts are a jammed or failed drain pump (often a sock or coin), a lid lock (top-load) or door lock (front-load), or less often the pressure switch or control board.
Repair or replace? A pump, filter, lid lock, or drain hose is almost always worth fixing. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Water left after a delicate or low-spin cycle; Sud on the display; hose taped or pushed deep into the standpipe; washer just moved | Settings, suds, or installation | โ Free fix. Drain & Spin, HE detergent, fix the hose |
| F9 E1, drn, or F0 E8 that returns; pump hums but no water moves; filter full of lint or a sock | Clogged filter or jammed / failed drain pump | ๐ง Usually worth repairing (often a sub-$100 part) |
| Won't drain plus won't spin, loud grinding, leaks from the tub, or the washer is 10+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Motor, control board, or several parts at once | โป๏ธ Lean toward replacing โ get a quote first |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Water is on the floor near the outlet or power cord. Switch off the washer's breaker before you touch the plug.
- You smell burning, see smoke, or the breaker trips. Leave it off and call a technician.
- The water in the drum is hot (a hot cycle just stopped). Let it cool before you drain it by hand.
- Never force a front-load door open while water is above the door's lower edge. Drain it first through the pump filter.
- The washer is still under warranty. Use Whirlpool's warranty service before removing any panel.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Whirlpool washer do you have?
Your model number is on a label on the washer (usually under the lid on top-loaders, or around the door frame on front-loaders โ your manual shows the exact spot). You need it to order the right pump or lock.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | How it drains | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-load (HE or agitator) | Often WTW | Pump under the cabinet; no user filter on most models | Codes: drn, F0 E8, LdL / LdU (lid lock), Sud |
| Front-load | Often WFW | Pump with a user-cleanable drain pump filter behind the bottom drawer or access panel (on some models) | Codes: F9 E1, F5 E2 (door lock), Sud / Sd |
| Laundry center / stacked | Varies | Like a top-loader | Separate lid-lock parts |
Get the water out first
Top-load: Switch the washer off at the breaker. Bail water into a bucket, then lower the end of the drain hose into a floor drain or a bucket below the tub level to let gravity do the rest. Have towels ready.
Front-load: Don't open the door yet. Whirlpool's steps for models with a storage drawer:
- Unplug the washer.
- Open the bottom drawer (pull the handle at the base) to reveal the drain pump filter, then remove the drawer by releasing the tab on each side (push the right tab down and the left tab up).
- Put a broad, flat container under the filter. Release the small black drain hose from its clip, remove the plug, and let water run into the container. Empty and repeat until it's drained. If water barely flows, push the hose in slightly to clear a kink.
- Dry the black hose, refit the plug, and clip it back.
Models without a storage drawer use a front access panel instead; your owner's manual shows how to open it.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Drain & Spin. Run it with the load redistributed. If it drains, the problem was the load, the spin speed, or suds.
- Lid or door fully closed. Whirlpool lists an open or unlatched door as the first reason a washer won't drain or spin. On top-loaders, LdL means the lid isn't locking; check for clothing under the lid and detergent buildup around the lid lock. LdU means it can't unlock; take baskets and other items off the lid.
- Spin speed. Gentle, delicate, and handwash cycles spin slowly and leave more water. Choose Heavy Duty or a higher spin.
- Suds. Use HE detergent and measure it. Whirlpool also says "no-splash" or "easy-pour" chlorine bleach contains a thickener that can make extra suds; use regular bleach. While Sud shows, the washer pauses and adds rinses on purpose.
- The drain hose. Whirlpool's checklist:
- Not kinked, crushed, or clogged. Straighten it; clear any blockage in the hose, standpipe, or laundry sink.
- Not taped into the standpipe. It should be loose but secure, with an air gap; tape causes siphoning.
- No more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) of hose inside the standpipe or laundry tub. Use the U-shaped hose form that came with the washer. (One older Whirlpool top-load page says 5 inches; 4.5 is the figure on most current pages.)
- Standpipe height. Whirlpool says the drainpipe must be no higher than 96 inches (244 cm); above that, the pump can't push the water out and it can flow back. For the minimum, Whirlpool's pages give 39 inches (99 cm) on its error-code and top-load pages and 30 inches (76.2 cm) on its general guide โ check your model's installation instructions. Too low a standpipe causes siphoning (the washer drains while it fills).
- Front-load: clean the drain pump filter (next section).
- Front-load "other F# E#" codes: Whirlpool says unplug for 5 minutes, reconnect, and restart. Top-load F# E# codes: press START/PAUSE once to clear, then again to restart.
How to know it's fixed: a full Normal cycle finishes with no code, the drum is empty (front-load: no water behind the door glass), and clothes come out damp, not dripping โ on two loads in a row.
Clean the front-load drain pump filter
Whirlpool calls this occasional maintenance, and suggests cleaning it every few months or as needed. After draining (see above):
- Lay a cotton cloth or towel under the filter.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it.
- Pull out lint, coins, hair ties, and small socks by hand; rinse the rest off under running water (a soft brush helps).
- Reinsert it clockwise as far as it will go, with the handle as close to vertical as possible.
- Re-clip the black hose and tuck it under the cutout; refit the drawer by inserting both rails at once until they click, then pull it out fully to make sure it's locked in.
If the filter turns but water still won't move after cleaning, look into the opening with a flashlight (power off): a trapped object can stop the pump impeller.
Whirlpool washer codes linked to draining
Whirlpool says the codes below may not be every code for your model; your owner's manual has the full list.
| Code | Washer type | Whirlpool's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| F9 E1 | Front-load | Drain is taking longer than expected, usually over 8 minutes | Check the hose for kinks and clogs; use the U-shaped form; check standpipe height; use HE detergent; clean the pump filter |
| drn | Top-load | Not draining properly; can be an installation problem | Check hose, standpipe, and suds; then service |
| F0 E8 | Top-load | Water remains in the tub (too much residual water) | Run Drain & Spin; if it persists, call for service |
| Sud / Sd | Both | Too many suds; front-load can also mean a restricted drain hose or standpipe | HE detergent; regular bleach; check the hose |
| F5 E2 | Front-load | Door not locking properly | Remove anything blocking the door; Pause/Cancel twice then Power once |
| LdL | Top-load | Lid not locking | Clear items and detergent buildup at the lid lock |
| LdU | Top-load | Lid can't unlock | Remove items from the lid |
| Int | Front-load | Cycle paused or canceled; washer may take 20โ30 minutes to stop spinning and drain | Wait; Pause/Cancel twice then Power once; unplug 5 minutes if it stays |
| OFb / OL | Top-load | Off-balance / load too large | Redistribute; remove items |
| F8 E1 / LO FL | Both | Low water flow on fill (not a drain fault, but the washer may run a drain routine) | Open both taps fully; check inlet hoses |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| F9 E1 | Drain hose, pump filter, drain pump | Hose and filter checks | Drain pump | Moderate |
| drn | Drain hose, drain pump | Hose and standpipe checks | Drain pump | Moderate |
| F0 E8 | Drain pump, pressure sensing | Drain & Spin | Pump or pressure switch | Advanced |
| Sud / Sd | Detergent, drain restriction | HE detergent, hose check | Drain restriction | Easy |
| F5 E2 | Door lock | Clear the door; reset | Door lock assembly | Moderate |
| LdL / LdU | Lid lock | Clear buildup; clear the lid | Lid lock assembly | Moderate |
Code meanings from Whirlpool's US Product Help error-code pages for front-load and top-load washers (sources 1โ2), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 10). Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.
Diagnose by symptom โ likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer, turn off both water taps, and drain the water first.
1. Pump hums or buzzes, but no water moves
Likely cause: something jammed in the drain pump (sock, coin, bra wire), or a clogged pump filter on front-loaders.
Signs: humming during drain; F9 E1 or drn; filter full of debris.
DIY difficulty: Easy (filter) to Moderate (pump removal).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump filter | Catches lint and objects before the pump | Easy |
| Drain pump | Pumps water out through the hose | Moderate |
2. Silent at drain time โ no hum, no water moving
Likely causes: a failed drain pump motor, a lid lock / door lock that isn't confirming "locked" (the washer won't drain or spin), or a control fault.
Signs: LdL or F5 E2 codes; lock doesn't click; display shows the cycle stuck.
DIY difficulty: Moderate for a lock or pump; Advanced for testing the control.
Call a pro if: you'd need a meter to check the pump motor, or there's no code to guide you.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Lid lock assembly (top-load) | Locks the lid and tells the control it's safe to spin and drain | Moderate |
| Door lock (front-load) | Same job on front-loaders | Moderate |
| Drain pump | See above | Moderate |
3. Drains slowly or only partly; clothes soaking wet
Likely causes: a partly clogged drain hose or standpipe, suds, a worn pump, or a cracked internal hose.
DIY difficulty: Easy (external hose) to Moderate (internal hoses).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain hose (external) | Carries water to the standpipe | Easy |
| Internal pump / tub hoses | Connect the tub to the pump | Moderate |
4. Washer thinks it's still full (F0 E8), or fills and drains at the same time
Likely causes: siphoning from a hose pushed too deep or a standpipe that's too low (fills and drains at once); or a pressure switch / water-level sensor or its small hose.
DIY difficulty: Easy for the hose fix; Advanced for the pressure switch.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Water-level pressure switch | Tells the control how much water is in the tub | Advanced |
| Pressure switch hose | Connects the tub to the switch | Moderate |

Prevent the next drain problem
- Clean the front-load pump filter every few months (Whirlpool's guidance), more often with pets or kids' clothes.
- Use HE detergent, measured, and regular (not "no-splash") bleach.
- Wash small items in a mesh bag; check pockets for coins, keys, and hair ties.
- Keep the drain hose in its U-form, no deeper than 4.5 inches, and never taped.
- Don't overload or wash a single heavy item alone; balance it with towels.
What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a washer
Per Whirlpool's US warranty overview (re-read 2026-10-30):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from delivery) | Factory-specified parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanship | Whirlpool |
| Some models, longer | Some Whirlpool-family laundry warranties add parts-only coverage on items such as the drive motor or wash basket after year 1 โ check your model's warranty sheet | You |
What this means for a washer that won't drain: a failed pump, lock, or control is covered in year 1. Installation problems (hose taped or too deep, standpipe height), clogs from objects, and house plumbing aren't defects, and Whirlpool excludes service to correct improper installation. Keep your proof of purchase; Whirlpool's customer center is 1-800-253-1301.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Is it broken? Rule out spin speed, suds, the load, and the hose and filter first.
- Warranty: year 1 from delivery, any longer parts coverage on your model, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether a jammed pump will be cleared before it's replaced.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? โ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? โ Age and Life (use about 10โ11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8โ13-year average for washers, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ Past
Step A โ Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | โ Repair | ๐ค Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | ๐ค Get a second quote first | โ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Whirlpool front-loader shows F9 E1. The pump filter holds a baby sock. Cleaning it fixes the drain. R = $0.
โ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Whirlpool top-loader shows drn; the pump is seized. A tech replaces it: R = $280; N = $900; no other repairs.
280 รท 900 = 31%; life used 6 รท 11 = 55%; repeat check 31% โ Repair (under 50% of new, despite past mid-life).
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Whirlpool front-loader won't drain or spin; the tech finds a failed control board and a worn pump: R = $600; N = $1,000. It had a $250 door lock last year.
600 รท 1,000 = 60%; life used 11 รท 11 = 100%; repeat check (600 + 250) รท 1,000 = 85% โ Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board plus pump at once, tub bearings or leaks, rust, or a washer past about 11 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, hose, pump, or lock; the washer is in year 1; or the part is covered.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
3. A plumber. If the standpipe or laundry-sink drain is clogged, too high, or too low, or water backs up from the drain.
4. DIY with the right part. Filters, external hoses, and many drain pumps are DIY-friendly. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the pump for a jam before quoting a new one?
- Is the lid or door lock reporting locked?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Many plans exclude clogs from foreign objects and installation problems. Whirlpool also sells its own extended service plans that start after the factory warranty. Read the terms before you buy.
FAQ
Why won't my Whirlpool washer drain?
Whirlpool's most common causes are an open lid or door, an off-balance or overloaded load, a low-spin cycle, too many suds, or a drain-hose installation problem. On front-loaders, a clogged drain pump filter is next. If those are fine, the drain pump or lid/door lock is the likely part.
What does F9 E1 mean on a Whirlpool washer?
On front-loaders, it means draining is taking longer than expected, usually more than 8 minutes. Check the hose for kinks and clogs, use the U-shaped hose form, check the standpipe height, use HE detergent, and clean the pump filter.
What does drn mean on a Whirlpool washer?
On top-loaders, it means the washer isn't draining properly. Whirlpool notes it can be an installation problem, so check the hose and standpipe first.
Where is the drain pump filter on a Whirlpool washer?
On front-loaders that have one, it's at the bottom front โ behind the storage drawer on many models, or behind an access panel. Most top-loaders don't have a user-cleanable filter.
How do I reset a Whirlpool washer that won't drain?
Front-load: press Pause/Cancel twice and Power once to clear many codes, or unplug for 5 minutes. Top-load: press START/PAUSE once to clear an F# E# code, then again to restart. Then run Drain & Spin.
How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool washer that won't drain?
Often nothing. Fixr puts a "won't drain" repair at $150 to $300. Whirlpool drain pumps were listed at about $28 to $205 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30.
Should I replace a Whirlpool washer that won't drain?
Rarely for a drain problem alone. Consider replacing if the control board and pump fail together, or the washer is past about 11 years with other repairs.
