Amana Washer Not Spinning? Balance, Spin Setting, Suds, Drain Hose and Lid Lock Fixes — Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Most Amana "won't spin" problems are a load, a setting, suds, or the drain hose. Amana's Product Help and articles list these first:
- Unbalanced load. If the washer senses an off-balance load, it refills and rocks the basket to spread it out (you may see Ofb). If that fails, it stops and shows an error. Redistribute the load in loose heaps evenly around the agitator or washplate and press Start/Pause.
- Spin setting. Low Spin or No Spin leaves clothes wet. Delicate and Hand Wash spin slower on purpose. Run Drain & Spin to pull out the extra water.
- Bulky items. Use Bulky or Sheets/Bedding for comforters, coats, and blankets, not Normal or Rapid Wash. Add a few towels to a single heavy item.
- Suds. Amana says regular (non-HE) detergent in an HE washer makes excess suds and very wet loads, which slow spin speeds. HE models may show Sud.
- Level the washer. All four feet must touch the floor firmly. If it rocks corner to corner, level it.
- Drain hose. Water standing in the tub means it can't reach spin. Use the U-shaped hose form, put only 4.5 inches of hose into the standpipe, don't tape the opening, and keep the standpipe between 39 and 96 inches high. Amana says the spin light comes on after the drain pump runs 10 minutes with no change in water level, often because the hose is pushed too far down the standpipe.
- Lid lock. Amana says the lid may look closed but not be locked, so it won't spin (Lid Lock light flashing, or LdL). Check for anything in the way and wipe the lock striker on the lid with a damp cloth to remove detergent or lint.
- Add a Garment or a power failure. Pausing outside the Add a Garment window, or a power cut during spin, can keep the washer from reaching full spin speed.
If those don't fix it, the usual parts are the lid lock (newer top-loads) or lid switch (older top-loads), a drive belt and shift actuator on many newer agitator models, a motor coupling or clutch on older direct-drive models, the drain pump, the drive motor, or the control board. Amana is a Whirlpool Corporation brand, so most of these are Whirlpool-family parts.
Repair or replace? Most no-spin calls cost nothing to fix. A lid lock, actuator, belt, or coupling is usually worth fixing. A board on an older, budget-priced washer often isn't. See the calculator below.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Clothes wet, Ofb, Sud, a Delicate or No Spin setting, a single bulky item | Balance routine, spin setting, suds, or load | ✅ Free fix. Rebalance, change the setting, Drain & Spin |
| Water standing in the tub; spin light on; LdL or Lid Lock light flashing; washer rocks | Drain hose or standpipe, lid not locking, not level | ✅ Free to cheap. Fix the hose, clean the striker, level; lid lock if it fails |
| Drains fine, lid locks, but the basket never spins; F# E# codes return | Belt, shift actuator, coupling or clutch, motor, board | 🔧 Usually worth repairing for a belt, actuator, or coupling; ♻️ lean toward replacing for a board or motor on an older washer |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Unplug the washer before you open any panel or take off the drain hose.
- The tub is full of water. Drain or bail it first; it's heavy and may be hot.
- Never bypass the lid lock or lid switch. It keeps hands away from a spinning basket.
- You smell burning, see scorched wiring, or the breaker trips again. Stop and call a qualified technician.
- The washer is in year 1. Amana's limited warranty pays for factory-specified parts and labor for one year from delivery, and all warranty service goes through authorized Amana service providers. Use it before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair.
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Amana washer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label (on most top-loads, under the lid or on the back of the cabinet). Amana's warranty excludes washers whose model or serial numbers have been removed or can't be read, so keep the label intact.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | How it signals a spin problem | Drive (Whirlpool-platform note) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-load with agitator, newer | Often NTW (check label) | Ofb, LdL or Lid Lock light, F# E#, status lights | Many use a belt and a shift actuator that switches between wash and spin |
| Top-load with agitator, older | Often NTW (older series) | Lid stays unlocked or no spin, no codes | Many are Whirlpool direct-drive: lid switch, motor coupling, clutch |
| Top-load HE (impeller) | Varies (check label) | Ofb, Sud, LdL, OL, F# E# | Lid lock; varies by model |
| Front-load / laundry center | Varies | See your manual | Door lock or lid switch; Whirlpool-family parts |
Labeling note: Amana's Product Help pages don't break down the drive system by model. The "Drive" column is our mapping from the Whirlpool-family part numbers Sears PartsDirect lists under Amana washers; confirm with your model's parts diagram before you buy. Prefixes are examples, not a full list.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Let it rebalance. If you see Ofb, Amana says let the washer finish its correction routine. If the dial is flashing and it stopped, redistribute, close the lid, and press Start/Pause.
- Spin setting. Pick a cycle with a high spin (Heavy Duty, Normal) and check Spin isn't set to Low or None. Then run Drain & Spin.
- Load. Loose heaps evenly around the agitator or washplate. Amana says adding wet items or more water mid-cycle can unbalance the washer. Wash a rug or jacket with a few towels. Comforters go on Bulky/Sheets.
- Suds. If you used regular detergent or too much HE detergent, run a rinse and measure next time.
- Level. Rock the washer diagonally corner to corner; if it moves, adjust the feet. Amana notes a drain pan under the washer may need the legs raised.
- Drain hose. U-form attached; only 4.5 in (113 mm) into the standpipe; no tape over the opening; no kinks or clogs; standpipe 39 to 96 inches high.
- Lid. Nothing under the lid; wipe detergent and lint off the lock striker; nothing heavy sitting on the lid (LdU).
- Codes. For F# E#, Amana says press Start/Pause once to clear, then again to restart. If it doesn't clear, contact Amana or schedule service.
How to know it's fixed: Drain & Spin on a balanced load drains the water and reaches full spin with no Ofb, LdL, Sud, or F# E#, and clothes come out damp, not dripping.
Amana washer codes linked to "not spinning"
Amana lists these top-load codes on its US Product Help pages ("may not be all error codes for your model"; your owner's manual has the full list).
| Code / light | Amana's meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ofb | Load out of balance; the washer is running a balance-correction routine | Let it continue; if it stops with the dial flashing, redistribute, close the lid, press Start/Pause |
| OL | Load too large | The washer drains; remove several items, add HE detergent, close the lid, press Start/Pause |
| Sud | Excessive suds | Use only HE detergent |
| LdL / Lid Lock light flashing | Lid not locking | Remove items under the lid; clean detergent or lint off the lock and striker |
| LdU | Lid can't unlock | Remove objects such as a laundry basket from the lid |
| lid | Lid left open | Close the lid; after 10 minutes the cycle resets and drains |
| drn | Not draining properly (sometimes an installation problem) | Check the drain hose and standpipe |
| Spin light on, water in tub | Drain pump ran 10 minutes with no water-level change | Check the hose isn't pushed too far into the standpipe |
| PF | Power failure interrupted the cycle | Touch and hold Start to restart, or press Power to clear |
| F# E# or F## | System error | Start/Pause once to clear, again to restart; contact Amana or schedule service if it won't clear |
Which part each code points at, and how hard the fix is:
| Code / symptom | Part most often involved | First fix (free) | If it comes back | DIY tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ofb every load | Leveling, suspension springs | Rebalance; level | Suspension springs | Moderate |
| LdL / Lid Lock flashing | Lid lock, lid strike | Clear the lid; clean the striker | Lid lock assembly | Moderate |
| Older model, lid closed, no spin | Lid switch | Check the lid actuator isn't bent | Lid switch | Moderate |
| drn, water in the tub | Drain hose, drain pump | Fix the hose | Drain pump | Easy → Advanced |
| Agitates but won't spin (top-load) | Shift actuator or belt (newer); coupling or clutch (older direct-drive) | Power-cycle; Drain & Spin | Actuator, belt, coupling, or clutch | Moderate → Advanced |
| Motor hums, basket still | Drive motor, coupling, board | — | Motor or board | Advanced |
| F# E# returns | Control or sensor fault | Clear with Start/Pause | Board diagnosis | Advanced |
Code meanings from Amana US Product Help "Error Codes On Amana Top Load Washers"; steps from "Not Spinning - Washer" and "Vibration or Out of Balance loads", and the amana.com article "Why Your Washer Won't Spin" (sources 1–4), checked 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 11) has no Amana entries, so the code→part table is our own mapping from Amana's pages and the Whirlpool-family part catalog, not Amana wording. Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer. Drain or bail out the water. Towels down. Keep the model number handy.
1. LdL or Lid Lock flashing; it never locks and never spins
Likely causes: something under the lid, detergent or lint on the striker, a damaged lid strike, or a failed lid lock assembly. On older top-loads without a lock, a failed lid switch stops the spin.
DIY difficulty: Moderate (top panel or console up, power off).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Lid lock assembly | Locks the lid before high-speed spin | Moderate |
| Lid switch (older models) | Tells the control the lid is closed | Moderate |
2. Ofb on normal loads; shakes and stops
Likely causes: the washer isn't level, or worn suspension springs let the tub sway.
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Suspension springs | Hold and damp the tub | Moderate |
3. Agitates fine, but the basket never spins
Likely causes (Whirlpool-platform, labeled): on many newer belt-drive agitator models, a failed shift actuator or a worn drive belt. On older direct-drive models, a broken motor coupling (often after overloading) or a worn clutch.
DIY difficulty: Moderate to Advanced (washer tipped back or cabinet off, power off).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Shift actuator | Switches between wash and spin | Moderate |
| Drive belt | Connects the motor to the gearcase | Moderate |
| Motor coupling (direct-drive) | Links the motor to the transmission | Advanced |
| Clutch (direct-drive) | Brings the basket up to spin speed | Advanced |
4. Water stays in the tub; drn or the spin light
Likely causes: the drain hose setup (too far into the standpipe, kinked, or clogged), or a failed drain pump.
DIY difficulty: Easy (hose) to Advanced (pump).
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Pumps water out before spin | Advanced |
5. Motor hums or stays silent; F# E# keeps coming back
Likely causes: the drive motor or the main control board.
DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Drive motor | Turns the basket | Advanced |
| Control board | Runs the cycle and the motor | Advanced; diagnose first |
Not sure if it's the lock, the actuator, the coupling, or the motor? A technician can test each in one visit; that's the visit that decides repair vs. replace on a budget washer.

Keep it spinning
- Use HE detergent in HE models, and measure it (Amana).
- Wash several items, not one heavy item; use Bulky/Sheets for bedding.
- Don't add wet items or extra water mid-cycle (Amana).
- Keep it level, and recheck after moving it.
- Keep the drain hose in its U-form, 4.5 inches into the standpipe, untaped.
- Wipe the lid lock striker now and then so detergent and lint don't stop it locking.
- Don't overload an older direct-drive washer; it's hard on the motor coupling (Whirlpool-platform note).

What Amana's warranty covers on a washer
Per the Amana Major Appliance Limited Warranty on amana.com and the Amana laundry warranty printed in Amana's use-and-care guides (read 2026-10-30; your model's document has the final terms):
| Period | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 (from delivery of the original purchase) | Factory-specified replacement parts and labor to correct defects in materials or workmanship, or replacement at Amana's discretion | Amana |
| After year 1 | No standard Amana coverage (extended service plans sold separately) | You |
What this means for a washer that won't spin: in year 1, a failed lid lock, actuator, belt, coupling, pump, motor, or board is covered. All warranty service is done by authorized Amana service providers; you need proof of the original purchase date. Amana doesn't cover service calls to correct installation, instruct you on use, fix house fuses, wiring, or plumbing, or consumable parts, so a drain-hose, level, or detergent problem isn't a warranty repair.

- Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
- Free fixes done: balance routine, spin setting, Bulky cycle, HE detergent, level, drain hose, lid striker, code clear, Drain & Spin.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Whirlpool-family part numbers (Amana is a Whirlpool Corporation brand) listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "amana washer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; GE, LG, Samsung, Frigidaire, and Crosley parts, bezels, dishwasher parts, and refurbished parts in the same results are excluded. Ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general, not Amana-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Amana's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Amana top-load leaves towels soaking wet and the spin light is on. The drain hose had been pushed a foot down the standpipe. Pulling it back to 4.5 inches fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Amana agitator washer fills and agitates but won't spin. A tech replaces the shift actuator: R = $180; N = $750; no other repairs.
180 ÷ 750 = 24%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50%; repeat check 24% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 8-year-old Amana needs a main control board after a $220 drain pump last year. R = $420; N = $750.
420 ÷ 750 = 56%; life used 8 ÷ 10 = 80%; repeat check (420 + 220) ÷ 750 = 85% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a board or motor on a washer past about 7 years, a second big repair in about 2 years, or rust or a cracked tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lid lock, lid switch, actuator, belt, coupling, or springs; the washer is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

3. DIY with the right part. Lid locks, lid switches, actuators, belts, couplings, and springs are common DIY jobs. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the spin setting, balance, detergent, level, and drain hose first?
- Is it the lock, the actuator, the coupling, the motor, or the board? How did you confirm it?
- Is the part still under Amana's first-year warranty or my extended plan?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by overloading or installation. A washer that's already broken is usually not covered. Amana's Product Help advertises savings on extended service plans bought within 30 days of a new appliance purchase.
FAQ
Why is my Amana washer not spinning?
Amana's list: an unbalanced load, Low or No Spin selected, a delicate cycle, a single bulky item, non-HE or too much detergent, an unlevel washer, a drain hose problem, pausing outside the Add a Garment window, or a power failure during spin. The lid must also lock.
What does Ofb mean on an Amana washer?
The load is out of balance and the washer is running a correction routine. Let it continue. If it stops with the dial flashing, redistribute the load, close the lid, and press Start/Pause.
Why is the Lid Lock light flashing on my Amana washer?
Amana says the lid may look closed but not be locked. Check for anything in the way and wipe the lock striker on the lid with a damp cloth to remove detergent or lint.
Why is the spin light on and water in my Amana washer?
Amana says that light comes on after the drain pump runs 10 minutes with no change in water level. Often the drain hose is pushed too far down the standpipe; only 4.5 inches should go in.
How do I clear an F# E# code on an Amana washer?
Press Start/Pause once to clear it, then press Start/Pause again to restart. If it won't clear, contact Amana or schedule service.
How long is the Amana washer warranty?
One year from delivery, covering factory-specified parts and labor for defects, with service by authorized Amana providers. There's no standard longer motor coverage.
Is it worth fixing an Amana washer that won't spin?
Usually, if it's a free fix or a cheap part like a lid lock, actuator, belt, or coupling. A board or motor on an older Amana often leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
