Quick answer

First, wait three minutes. GE Appliances says many washers pause for up to 3 minutes between parts of a cycle, and the pump-out itself can take another 3 minutes before the spin starts. Don't turn the dial forward during a pause; you can skip the pump-out.

GE's checks, cheapest first:

  1. Close the lid. GE says none of its top-load washers will spin with the lid up. On space-saving top-loads, dE or E2 means the lid was opened: close it and press Start/Pause within about 30 seconds, or the washer shuts off.
  2. Balance the load. A flashing SPIN light or bALAnCINg on the display (2015 and newer models) means the load bunched up. Spread it out and press Start, or pick Drain & Spin.
  3. Check power. Test the outlet with a lamp or hair dryer, and check the breaker or fuse.
  4. Check the OPTIONS knob (2015 and newer top-loads). It must point squarely at an option and beep when you turn it. No beep means the knob needs service.
  5. CAnCELEd scrolling, or the two furthest lights flashing? Run Drain & Spin. If it comes back, unplug for 1 minute and try again.
  6. Hydrowave top-load (select 2011–2015 models)? Do GE's motor reset: unplug 1 minute, plug in, then lift and lower the lid 6 times within 12 seconds.
  7. Front-load: close the dispenser drawer fully, and add one or two similar items if the load is very small.

If those don't fix it, the usual parts are the lid switch or lid lock (or a missing lid magnet), a worn drive belt (belt-drive models), worn suspension rods that keep the load from balancing, a drain problem (it can't spin if it can't pump out; see our GE washer not draining guide), or, less often, the drive motor or control board. GE says if the water pumps out and the motor runs but the tub doesn't spin, service is needed.

Repair or replace? Most no-spin calls cost nothing to fix. A lid switch, belt, or suspension kit is usually worth fixing. A motor or board on a washer near the end of its life is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.

Which GE washer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label. On most GE top-loads it's under the lid or on the back of the cabinet; on front-loads it's usually around the door opening. You need it to order the right part and to check warranty status, and to see whether your model has the Hydrowave wash system (GE's product page for your model lists it).

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Wait it out. Give it 3 minutes for a pause and up to 3 more for pump-out (GE). Don't turn the dial forward.
  2. Lid. Close it fully. On older washers check the lid switch probe (a small plastic piece on the lid's right side) or the lid magnet (a plastic-coated magnet held by two screws). GE says if either is missing or damaged, the washer won't agitate or spin even with the lid closed.
  3. Balance. Spread the load evenly; mix big and small items. Don't load above the balance ring. Then Start or Drain & Spin.
  4. Level. Twist each leveling foot clockwise until it touches the floor, then lock the nut counterclockwise (GE). A rocking washer stops spinning to protect itself.
  5. Power. Plug a lamp or hair dryer into the outlet. Washers should be on their own dedicated outlet.
  6. Knobs and cycle. OPTIONS knob on an option (it should beep); speed selector pointing at a speed, not between; not in a soak cycle; Start/Pause not pushed by accident.
  7. Motor reset (Hydrowave models). Unplug for 1 minute. Plug back in and, within 30 seconds, lift and lower the lid 6 times within 12 seconds, raising it at least 2 inches each time and closing it fully. Run a short empty wash to test.
  8. Front-load. Push the dispenser drawer fully closed. If it's a small load, add one or two similar items. If water is left in the drum, clean the pump filter (see the drain guide).
  9. Cold garage? GE says water in the pump can freeze and lock the motor. Let it thaw.

How to know it's fixed: run Drain & Spin on an empty or light load. The tub drains, then spins up smoothly, and no bALAnCINg, CAnCELEd, or flashing SPIN light returns.

Messages and steps from GE Appliances' US support articles "Top Load Washer - Does Not Spin", "Front Load Washer - Does Not Spin", "Top Load Washer - Hydrowave Motor Reset", "Top Load Washer - Fills But Will Not Agitate", and "Top Load Washer - Will Not Drain" (sources 1–5), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 10), which maps manufacturer codes to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty, has no GE washer entries, so the symptom→part table above is our own mapping from GE's troubleshooting pages and the part catalog, not GE wording. Your owner's manual has the final word for your model.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer (GE). Bail out or drain the water. Turn off both water taps if you'll move the washer. Keep towels down.

1. Won't spin (or agitate) even with the lid closed

Likely causes: a missing or damaged lid magnet or lid switch probe, a failed lid switch, or on lid-locking models a lid lock that doesn't lock.

Signs: the cycle stalls before spin; the Lid Lock light never comes on; the motor reset doesn't help.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (top panel or console off, power unplugged).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Lid switch / magnetTells the control the lid is closedModerate
Lid lock assemblyLocks the lid before a high-speed spinModerate

2. Balancing every load; shakes, then stops

Likely causes: the washer isn't level, the load is above the balance ring, or worn suspension rods let the tub sway so far it can't balance.

Signs: bALAnCINg or a flashing SPIN light on normal loads; the tub hangs low or off-center when empty; banging.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (rod kits hook in from the top on many top-loads).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Suspension rod kitHolds and damps the tubModerate

3. The motor runs but the tub doesn't turn

Likely causes: a broken or slipping drive belt on belt-drive models, or a fault in the drive system. GE says if the washer pumps out and you're sure the motor runs but the tub doesn't spin, service is required.

Signs: a motor sound with no movement; a burning-rubber smell (belt).

DIY difficulty: Moderate for a belt; Advanced for anything in the drive system.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive beltConnects the motor to the basket driveModerate

4. Fills but won't agitate or spin; motor reset doesn't hold

Likely causes: a failing drive motor or main control board. GE says if it stops again after a couple of loads following a reset, schedule service.

Signs: CAnCELEd keeps returning; silence when it should agitate; it works briefly after a reset.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first before buying a motor or board.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive motorTurns the agitator and basketAdvanced
Main control boardRuns the cycle and the motorAdvanced; diagnose first

5. Water left in the tub, so it never reaches spin

Likely causes: a clog in the pump filter (front-load), the drain hose, or the house drain, or a failed drain pump. GE says a tub full of water that just hums needs service.

DIY difficulty: Easy to clean a filter; Advanced for a pump. Full steps: GE washer not draining.

What GE's warranty covers on a washer

Per the GE Appliances washer limited warranty printed in GE's US top-load washer owner's manual 49-90352 (see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Any part of the washer that fails because of a defect in materials or workmanship, plus all labor and related service to replace itGE
Longer motor coverage (some models only)Some GE washer warranties add parts-only motor coverage. A GE washer manual we checked (a Canadian-market top-load) adds an extra nine years on the motor for certain models onlyYou pay labor

Check the warranty page in your manual; extra coverage varies by model and market.

What this means for a washer that won't spin: in year 1, a failed lid switch, motor, or board is covered. GE doesn't cover service trips to teach you how to use the product, improper installation, delivery, or maintenance (an unleveled washer or a kinked hose counts here), resetting circuit breakers or replacing house fuses, products working as described in the manual (a normal pause or a balancing routine), commercial use, operation in freezing temperatures, or damage from accident, fire, or floods. Keep proof of the original purchase date.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 any part with labor; check your manual for any longer motor coverage; plus retailer or credit-card extended protection or a GE extended warranty.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: pause wait, lid, balance, level, power, knobs, CAnCELEd clear, motor reset, drawer and small load (front-load).
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the tech tried GE's motor reset first.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are GE part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for washers in general unless noted, not GE-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses)
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old GE top-load stops spinning after a storm knocked the power out. GE's motor reset fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old GE top-load won't spin with the lid closed; a tech replaces the lid switch. R = $180; N = $900; no other repairs.
180 ÷ 900 = 20%; life used 5 ÷ 10 = 50%; repeat check 20% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 9-year-old GE washer needs a drive motor out of warranty. It had a drain pump replaced last year for $250. R = $500; N = $900.
500 ÷ 900 = 56%; life used 9 ÷ 10 = 90%; repeat check (500 + 250) ÷ 900 = 83% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a motor or board on a washer near 10 years old, a second big repair in about 2 years, rust, or a cracked tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lid switch, magnet, belt, or suspension kit; the washer is under about 7 years old; or the motor is still inside a parts-only motor warranty.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by overloading or improper installation. A washer that's already broken is usually not covered. GE also sells extended warranties on its appliances.

FAQ

Why is my GE washer not spinning?
Most often it's a normal pause (up to 3 minutes, plus up to 3 more for pump-out), the lid being up, or an unbalanced load. GE also lists power, the OPTIONS knob, and a motor reset on Hydrowave models.

How do I reset my GE washer motor?
On Hydrowave top-loads (select 2011–2015 models): unplug for 1 minute, plug back in, and within 30 seconds lift and lower the lid 6 times within 12 seconds, raising it at least 2 inches each time.

What does bALAnCINg mean on a GE washer?
The load is too uneven to spin. Spread it out, then press Start or select Drain & Spin.

What does CAnCELEd mean on a GE washer?
An error occurred. Select Drain & Spin and press Start; if it comes back, unplug the washer for 1 minute and try again.

What do dE and E2 mean on a GE washer?
On space-saving top-loads they mean the lid was opened. Close it and press Start/Pause; if you wait longer than about 30 seconds, the washer shuts off and you have to restart the cycle.

Why won't my GE front-load washer spin a small load?
GE says a very small load may not spin. Add one or two similar items to balance it. Also make sure the dispenser drawer is fully closed.

Can a GE washer spin with the lid open?
No. GE says none of its top-load washers will spin with the lid up. If it won't spin with the lid closed, check the lid magnet or probe and the lid switch.

Is it worth fixing a GE washer that won't spin?
Usually. Most causes are free, and a lid switch or belt is a cheap part. A motor or board on a washer near 10 years old leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
