Quick answer

Most Whirlpool washers that "won't spin" are protecting themselves, not broken. Whirlpool's own Product Help pages list the same causes for top-load and front-load models: an out-of-balance load, a Low Spin or No Spin setting, a Delicate or Hand Wash cycle (slower spin by design), too many suds from non-HE or too much detergent, an overloaded or single bulky item, a washer that isn't level, or a drain hose problem that leaves water in the tub.

Whirlpool's checks, cheapest first:

  1. Rearrange the load and run Drain & Spin. Whirlpool says an off-balance load (OFb on top-loaders) makes the washer slow or stop the spin; add towels to balance a single heavy item.
  2. Check the spin setting. Whirlpool notes cycle settings are remembered: if you once ran Heavy Duty with no spin, that cycle stays at no spin next time.
  3. Use HE detergent and measure it. Excess suds (Sud / Sd) make the washer spin at reduced speed.
  4. Level the washer so all four feet are solid.
  5. Check the drain hose: only about 4.5 in (113 mm) in the standpipe, standpipe 39–96 in high, no kinks or clogs.
  6. New front-loader? Make sure the shipping bolts were removed. Whirlpool's F7 E1 (motor speed error) lists shipping bolts and overloading as the first checks.

If none of that works, the parts that actually fail are a lid lock or lid switch (top-load won't spin with the lid "open"), a drive belt or motor coupling, a shifter or clutch, the drive motor, or the motor control board.

Repair or replace? Free fixes, belts, couplings, and lid switches are cheap. A motor, transmission, or control board on a 10-year-old washer is where replacement starts to win. See the calculator below.

Which Whirlpool washer do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label under the lid or on the back of the top-load console, or inside the door frame on front-loaders. You need it to order the right belt, lid lock, or coupling.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

Whirlpool's own steps for a washer that isn't spinning or leaves clothes wet, plus what each one means:

  1. Is the load out of balance? On top-loaders Whirlpool says the washer tries to self-correct (refill and rotate gently); if it can't, it shows OFb and may stop. Redistribute the load in loose heaps around the washplate and press START/PAUSE. Don't add wet items or extra water mid-cycle. Balance a single rug or jacket with a few towels.
  2. Use the right cycle for bulky items. Whirlpool says bedding, comforters, and heavy coats belong in Bulky / Sheets, not Normal or Rapid Wash.
  3. Check spin speed. Low Spin or No Spin leaves more water in clothes. Delicate and Hand Wash cycles spin slower on purpose. Whirlpool says the washer remembers the last settings for each cycle.
  4. Run Drain & Spin after rearranging the load to remove extra water.
  5. Check detergent. Whirlpool says use only HE detergent, measured; with very soft water use less. Excess suds make the washer run at a reduced spin speed. On front-loaders, "no-splash" or "easy-pour" bleach can also cause suds.
  6. Level the washer. Whirlpool says an unlevel washer can unbalance the load so it doesn't spin correctly, with extra noise and vibration.
  7. Check the drain hose. Whirlpool: use the U-shaped hose form, put only 4.5 in (113 mm) of hose in the standpipe, keep the standpipe between 39 in and 96 in high, and make sure the hose isn't kinked or clogged. Don't tape over the drain opening. If water stays in the tub, the washer can't reach full spin.
  8. Did you pause it late or lose power? Whirlpool says pausing after the Add a Garment window, or a power failure during spin, can stop the washer reaching full spin speed.
  9. New front-loader? Whirlpool says the shipping bolts must be removed before use (a 5/8 in / 16 mm wrench; slide each bolt and spacer to the center of the hole and pull them out the back). Leaving them in causes vibration, noise, and possible damage.

How to know it's fixed: the washer reaches spin without stopping, there's no code, and clothes come out damp rather than dripping.

Whirlpool washer codes linked to "not spinning"

Whirlpool lists these on its US error-code pages for top-load HE and front-load washers. Codes vary by model.

OFb (top-load)Load is out of balance; the washer is running a balance-correction routineLet it continue; if it stops with the dial flashing, redistribute and press START/PAUSE
OL (top-load)Load too large; the washer drains water and detergentRemove several items, add HE detergent, restart
Sud / SdToo many suds; the washer extends rinsing and won't spin out until suds clearUse measured HE detergent; on front-loaders avoid "no-splash" bleach; check the drain hose isn't kinked
LdL (top-load)Lid is not lockingCheck for items under the lid and detergent build-up around the lid lock

Code meanings from Whirlpool's US Product Help error-code pages for front-load and top-load HE washers (sources 1–2), cross-checked 2026-10-30 against the open ApplianceDB sample, which maps each code to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty (source 10). Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water valves. Bail or drain the water first (front-loaders: through the pump filter's drain hose). A soaked load is heavy; lift it out in small batches.

1. Top-load won't lock the lid or won't start spin (LdL, lid)

Likely causes: a failed lid lock (HE top-loaders) or lid switch (older top-loaders), detergent build-up in the lock, or a broken lid strike.

Signs: the lid-lock light flashes; you don't hear the lock click; the washer agitates but never spins.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (console or top panel comes off).

Call a pro if: the lock is fine and the code continues (wiring or board).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Lid lock assembly (HE top-load)Locks the lid and tells the board it's safe to spinModerate
Lid switch (older top-load)Tells the control the lid is closedModerate

2. Motor runs or hums, but the basket doesn't turn

Likely causes: a broken or slipping drive belt (belt-drive HE top-loaders), a stripped motor coupling (older direct-drive top-loaders), or a failed shifter that doesn't switch from agitate to spin.

Signs: you hear the motor; the basket turns freely by hand or not at all; burning-rubber smell (belt); bits of plastic or rubber under the washer (coupling).

DIY difficulty: Moderate for belts and couplings (washer tipped back or cabinet off); advanced for the shifter.

Call a pro if: the belt and coupling are fine.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive beltConnects the motor to the transmission or basketModerate
Motor couplingLinks the motor to the transmission on older direct-drive modelsModerate
Shifter assemblySwitches HE top-loaders between agitate and spinAdvanced

3. Spins slowly, clothes very wet, basket doesn't get up to speed

Likely causes: a worn clutch (older top-loaders), worn suspension rods or shock absorbers that trigger repeated off-balance correction, or a drain problem leaving water in the tub.

Signs: loud banging or walking at spin; repeated OFb with normal loads; basket "drifts" instead of spinning up.

DIY difficulty: Advanced for the clutch; moderate for top-load suspension rods.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
ClutchLets the basket come up to spin speedAdvanced
Suspension rods / shock absorbersHold the tub steady so it can spinModerate–Advanced

4. No motor sound at all on spin, F7 E1, or other F# E# codes

Likely causes: the drive motor (front-load rotor/stator), the motor control board, wiring, or, on older models, the transmission.

Signs: nothing happens at spin; the code returns after a reset with bolts out and a normal load.

DIY difficulty: Pro only in warranty; otherwise advanced. Have the motor and board tested before buying either; they're the two most expensive parts.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drive motor (or rotor / stator)Turns the basketAdvanced
Motor control boardDrives the motorAdvanced; diagnose first

Not sure if it's the belt, the lock, or the motor? A technician can run the washer's service diagnostics and test each part in one visit, so you don't buy the wrong one.

What Whirlpool's warranty covers on a washer

Per Whirlpool's US warranty overview (re-read 2026-10-30):

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1 (from delivery)Factory-specified parts and repair labor for defects in materials or workmanshipWhirlpool
Some models, longerSome Whirlpool-family laundry warranties add parts-only coverage on items such as the drive motor or wash basket after year 1 — check your model's warranty sheetYou

What this means for a washer that won't spin: a failed lid lock, belt, motor, or board is covered in year 1. Off-balance loads, suds, spin settings, shipping bolts left in, and installation problems aren't defects; Whirlpool's shipping-bolt page warns that running with the bolts in can void the warranty. Keep your proof of purchase; Whirlpool's customer center is 1-800-253-1301.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1, any parts-only motor or basket coverage on your warranty sheet, and retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: rebalance, Drain & Spin, HE detergent, level, drain hose, shipping bolts. Many "won't spin" calls end there.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Whirlpool's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10–11 years, the middle of HomeGuide's 8–13-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Whirlpool top-loader shows OFb with a king-size comforter in Normal. Rewashed on Bulky / Sheets with the load redistributed, it spins. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old Whirlpool HE top-loader shows LdL; the lid lock has failed. A tech replaces it: R = $220; N = $900; no other repairs.
220 ÷ 900 = 24%; life used 7 ÷ 10.5 = 67%; repeat check 24% → Repair (top-right box: usually fine).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Whirlpool front-loader shows F7 E1 with bolts out and a normal load; the motor control board and stator both test bad, and last year it had a door lock for $200. R = $650; N = $1,000.
650 ÷ 1,000 = 65%; life used 11 ÷ 10.5 = over 100%; repeat check (650 + 200) ÷ 1,000 = 85% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a motor, transmission, or board on an older washer; a second big repair within about 2 years; rust or a cracked tub.
Tips toward repairing: it's a lid lock, switch, belt, coupling, or suspension; the washer is in year 1 or a parts-only coverage period.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new washer's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the washer, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude installation and load-related problems. A washer that's already broken is usually not covered. Whirlpool also sells extended service plans on new appliances.

FAQ

Why is my Whirlpool washer not spinning?
Whirlpool lists an out-of-balance load, a Low Spin or No Spin setting, a Delicate or Hand Wash cycle, too many suds, overloading or a single bulky item, a washer that isn't level, and a drain hose problem. Rebalance and run Drain & Spin first.

What does OFb mean on a Whirlpool washer?
The load is out of balance. The washer runs a balance-correction routine; if it stops with the dial flashing, redistribute the load and press START/PAUSE.

What does F7 E1 mean on a Whirlpool front-load washer?
A motor speed-sensing error: the motor can't reach the right speed. Whirlpool says check that the shipping bolts are removed and the washer isn't overloaded, then clear the code. If it returns, it needs service.

What does LdL mean?
The lid isn't locking. Check for items under the lid and detergent build-up around the lock. If it continues, the lid lock assembly may need replacing.

Why does my Whirlpool washer remember No Spin?
Whirlpool says cycle settings are remembered from the last time each cycle ran, so a cycle you once ran with no spin stays that way until you change it.

How far should the drain hose go into the standpipe?
Whirlpool's not-spinning pages say only about 4.5 inches (113 mm), with the standpipe between 39 and 96 inches high.

How much does it cost to fix a Whirlpool washer that won't spin?
A belt, coupling, or lid switch is a $20 to $110 OEM part on Sears PartsDirect (checked 2026-10-30). Cost guides put Whirlpool washer repairs at $250 to $500 in general, with motors and control boards at the top of the range.

Is it worth fixing a Whirlpool washer that won't spin?
Usually yes for locks, switches, belts, and couplings. A motor, transmission, or board on a 10-year-old washer usually isn't. Use the calculator above.
