Quick answer

First, look for a code. Samsung says check the display before anything else, and troubleshoot a code before you reset the dishwasher. 1E/IE on a WaterWall model means a clogged filter.

Then work out which problem you have:

Samsung's checks for food left on dishes, cheapest first:

  1. Clean the filter and drain area at the bottom of the tub.
  2. Clean the spray-arm nozzles. Samsung's steps: twist the nozzle cap off counterclockwise, brush out the holes, soak in white vinegar overnight if they're crusted, rinse, and twist back clockwise. Spin each arm by hand to check it turns freely.
  3. Scrape, don't pre-rinse. Samsung says detergent works best with some food soil on dishes.
  4. Use a heavier cycle (Heavy, Normal, or Auto) for baked-on loads.
  5. Check the water temperature. Samsung recommends supply water of 120–149°F. Run the kitchen tap until it's hot before you start.
  6. Use the recommended amount of detergent, and rinse aid. If a detergent isn't working, try another brand.
  7. Load so water reaches every surface. Nothing blocking the spray arms or the detergent door.

If those don't fix it, the usual parts are a cracked or blocked spray arm, a detergent dispenser that doesn't open, a weak circulation pump, or a heater problem (watch for HC or HE). Low water (4C) is a supply problem.

Repair or replace? Most "not cleaning" problems cost nothing to fix. A spray arm or dispenser is usually worth replacing. A circulation pump or heater on an older dishwasher is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.

Which Samsung dishwasher do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label on the side edge of the inner door or the tub frame (open the door and look along the side). You need it to order the right spray arm or filter and to check warranty status.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Read the code. If there is one, use the code table below first.
  2. Filter and drain area. Turn off power. Pull out the lower rack, twist out the filter, and rinse the coarse and fine filters under warm water with a soft brush. Clear anything in the drain area (gloves; watch for glass). Reassemble exactly as it came out. Samsung says keep the filter and drain area clean whenever debris builds up.
  3. Spray arms. Lift out or unclip the arms per your manual. Twist nozzle caps off counterclockwise, brush the holes clear, soak crusted parts in white vinegar overnight, rinse, and twist the caps back clockwise. Spin each arm by hand.
  4. Loading. Nothing taller than the rack hanging down to block the lower arm; nothing blocking the detergent door; dirty sides facing the spray.
  5. Hot water. Run the kitchen tap until it's hot. Samsung recommends 120–149°F water. If the Sanitize light keeps blinking, the water never reached temperature; raise the water-heater setting.
  6. Detergent and rinse aid. Use the amount your manual recommends; Samsung suggests trying another brand if results stay poor. Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled.
  7. Film test. Soak a cloudy glass in lemon juice or white vinegar for a few minutes. Film comes off = hard water. Film stays = etching.
  8. Deep clean. Put about 8 oz of white vinegar in a cup on the lower rack and run Sanitize (Samsung says it heats to about 163°F), or run Self Clean with no detergent if your model has it.

How to know it's fixed: a normal load comes out with no food bits, no gritty film, and no detergent left in the cup, and no code appears.

Samsung dishwasher codes that affect cleaning

Samsung lists these on its US Support pages. Samsung says troubleshoot before resetting, because a reset can hide the cause.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn the breaker off (or unplug). Let the heater cool. Gloves on for the filter area. Keep a towel under the door.

1. Food bits on dishes, especially the top rack

Likely causes: a clogged filter recirculating dirty water, blocked nozzles, a cracked spray arm, or an arm that can't spin because something hangs into its path.

Signs: grit on glasses; one rack cleaner than the other; an arm that doesn't turn freely by hand.

DIY difficulty: Easy (filter, nozzles) to Moderate (some arms need a retainer removed).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Filter (coarse / fine)Catches food before it's recirculatedEasy
Spray arm / nozzleSprays water at the dishesEasy → Moderate

2. Detergent left in the cup, or a gritty film

Likely causes: the detergent door is blocked by a dish or doesn't open, or water is too cool to dissolve the detergent. Samsung lists "detergent not dispensing" first for food left on dishes.

Signs: a pod or powder still in the cup after the cycle; a cake of detergent around the cup.

DIY difficulty: Moderate to replace a dispenser (inner door panel off).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Detergent dispenserHolds and releases detergent and rinse aidModerate

3. White film or cloudy glasses

Likely causes (Samsung): hard-water residue if the film comes off in lemon juice or vinegar; etching if it doesn't.

No part to buy unless a dispenser isn't releasing rinse aid.

4. Weak spray, cold dishes at the end, HC or HE

Likely causes: a weak circulation (wash) pump, a failed heater or temperature sensor, or low water from a partly closed supply valve or a failing water inlet valve (4C).

Signs: quieter wash than usual; dishes still cold and wet; HC, HE, tE, or 4C.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first.

Heating elementHeats wash water and helps dryingAdvanced

What Samsung's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and labor (standard manufacturer's warranty)Samsung
Limited-timeFree 2-year extended warranty on eligible dishwashers and other appliances bought July 9 to December 31, 2026 at participating retailers; claim form required, redeemed through SmartThingsCheck your terms

What this means for a dishwasher that doesn't clean: a failed circulation pump, heater, or dispenser in year 1 is a warranty repair. But routine maintenance such as cleaning the filter and nozzles isn't a warranty repair, and Samsung's warranty doesn't cover improper installation. Hard-water film and etched glass are water and detergent issues, not defects. Keep your proof of purchase.

→ Samsung US: home-appliance warranty · Request service

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 parts and labor; the 2026 extended-warranty offer if you bought in the window; plus retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: code checked, filter and drain area, nozzles, loading, no pre-rinse, hot water, detergent amount and rinse aid, film test, vinegar Sanitize cycle.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the tech checked the water temperature and fill first.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Samsung part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dishwashers in general, not Samsung-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair, so we don't show a number.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses or install kit)
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old Samsung dishwasher leaves grit on the top rack. The filter is packed and two upper-arm nozzles are crusted. Cleaning both fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Samsung dishwasher shows HC and dishes come out cold. A tech replaces the heater: R = $250; N = $850; no other repairs.
250 ÷ 850 = 29%; life used 6 ÷ 11 = 55%; repeat check 29% → Repair (usually fine; check for other wear).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 9-year-old Samsung dishwasher needs a circulation pump. It had a drain pump replaced last year for $250. R = $450; N = $850.
450 ÷ 850 = 53%; life used 9 ÷ 11 = 82%; repeat check (450 + 250) ÷ 850 = 82% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a circulation pump or heater on an older dishwasher, a second big repair in about 2 years, rust on the racks or tub, or leaks.
Tips toward repairing: it's a spray arm, nozzle cap, filter, dispenser, or inlet valve; the dishwasher is under about 8 years old; or the real fix was water temperature or detergent.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude hard-water damage and cleaning. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered. Samsung also sells extended service plans on new appliances.

FAQ

Why is my Samsung dishwasher not cleaning dishes?
Samsung's list: a clogged filter, blocked spray-arm nozzles, detergent not dispensing, pre-rinsed dishes, the wrong cycle, too little detergent or rinse aid, poor loading, or water cooler than 120°F. Check the display for a code first.

How do I clean the spray arms on a Samsung dishwasher?
Twist each nozzle cap off counterclockwise, brush the holes clear, soak crusted parts in white vinegar overnight, rinse, and twist the caps back clockwise. Spin each arm by hand to make sure it turns.

Why are my glasses cloudy from my Samsung dishwasher?
Soak one in lemon juice or vinegar. If the film comes off, it's hard water: use rinse aid, a monthly vinegar cycle, and Self Clean. If it doesn't, it's etching from too much detergent, very hot water, or over-softened water, and it's permanent.

What does 1E mean on a Samsung dishwasher?
On WaterWall models, a clogged filter. On rotary models, a high-temperature heater fault. Clean the filter first.

What does HC mean on a Samsung dishwasher?
A high-temperature heater error: it's too hot inside. Samsung says switch the breaker off for 30 seconds and back on, empty the dishwasher, add detergent, and run a Normal cycle; if it returns, request service.

Should I rinse dishes before putting them in a Samsung dishwasher?
No. Samsung says scrape off food but don't pre-rinse; detergent works best with some soil to act on.

Can I use bleach to clean my Samsung dishwasher?
Not in a stainless-steel tub. Samsung says use white vinegar instead, for example 8 oz in a cup on the lower rack on a Sanitize cycle.

Is it worth fixing a Samsung dishwasher that doesn't clean?
Usually. Most causes are free, and a spray arm or dispenser is a moderate repair. A circulation pump or heater on an older dishwasher leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
