Quick answer

First, check whether the water is actually a problem. Maytag says a small amount of water in the filter area is normal, about halfway up the filter area. It keeps the seals there from drying out and is replaced with fresh water on the next cycle. Water above the filter or up near the door opening is a real drain problem.

Maytag's checks, cheapest first:

  1. New install or new disposal? Make sure the knockout plug was removed from the disposal inlet. Maytag calls a forgotten knockout a common misdiagnosis; it blocks draining completely.
  2. Clear the disposal and sink drain. Run the disposal to clear food, and check the sink trap and tailpiece.
  3. Clean the filter and sump. Twist out the upper filter, lift out the lower one, rinse with warm water and a soft brush, and look in the sump for food, labels, seeds, toothpicks, or glass.
  4. Check the drain hose. No kinks, crushing, or sagging; routed on the correct side, inside the frame; a proper high loop under the counter or a working air gap, as local code requires.
  5. Clean the air gap (if you have one, on top of the sink) per its maker's instructions. Water spilling out of it means the blockage is downstream.
  6. Suds? Dish soap in a dishwasher makes suds that stop draining. Use only automatic-dishwasher detergent.
  7. Reset the control. Maytag says cut power for 30 seconds (unplug, or switch the breaker off and on), then run a drain.

If those don't fix it, the usual parts are a jammed or failed drain pump (a hum with no water moving), a clogged drain hose, a stuck check valve, or, less often, the control board (on some older designs, a timer or drain solenoid). F9E1 on the display, or the Clean light flashing 9 then 1, is Maytag's Long Drain code.

Repair or replace? Most drain problems cost nothing to fix. On Maytag dishwashers made after 2017, the stainless steel tub, nylon racks, and chopper carry 10-year limited parts coverage. A drain pump is usually worth replacing on a dishwasher under about 8 years old. A control board on an older dishwasher is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.

Which Maytag dishwasher do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label on the edge of the inner door or the tub frame (open the door and look along the side or top). You need it to order the right pump or hose and to check warranty status, including whether your dishwasher was made after 2017 (Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty).

Prefixes are examples, not a full list. Your owner's manual (search your model on Maytag's site) shows the filter layout and drain-hose routing.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Judge the water. About halfway up the filter area = normal (Maytag). Slightly above the filter = partial restriction (filter, sump, hose). Near the door opening = severe blockage or a pump that isn't running.
  2. Remove standing water. Towels down; bail with a cup into a bucket; use a turkey baster or hand pump for the sump. Pour it down a sink or toilet.
  3. Clean the filters. Remove the lower rack. Twist the upper filter counterclockwise and lift it out; lift out the lower filter (if present). Rinse under warm water with a soft brush (no abrasive pads). Shine a flashlight into the sump and remove debris. Reassemble: lower filter flat, upper filter turned clockwise until locked. A badly seated filter lets debris into the pump.
  4. Knockout plug and disposal. If the dishwasher drains into a disposal that was recently installed or replaced, make sure the knockout plug was removed. Run the disposal to clear it.
  5. Hose routing. Behind the toe panel and under the sink: no kinks, crushing, or sagging; on the correct side, inside the frame; clamped securely; a high loop fixed to the underside of the counter, or an air gap, as local code requires.
  6. Air gap. Remove the cap and clean out debris. If water spills out of the air gap into the sink, the clog is between the air gap and the drain.
  7. Suds. If you see foam, turn the dishwasher off and let the suds die down. Use only automatic-dishwasher detergent (dish soap makes suds).
  8. Reset. Unplug for 30 seconds (or breaker off 30 seconds if hard-wired), then run a short rinse and listen for the drain pump.

How to know it's fixed: after a short rinse, only the normal half-filter-level water remains, the pump sounds during drain, and F9E1 (or the flashing Clean light) doesn't return.

Maytag dishwasher codes linked to "not draining"

Maytag lists these on its US Product Help pages. Digital-display models show the code as F#E#. Lights-only models flash the Clean light in two groups: count the first group of flashes (the F number), a short pause of about 1–2 seconds, the second group (the E number), then a longer pause of about 5 seconds before it repeats. Example from Maytag: 7 flashes, pause, 1 flash = F7E1.

Code meanings, the flash-counting method, and the troubleshooting snapshot from Maytag's US Product Help pages "Dishwasher Error Codes - Reading", "F9E1 - Dishwasher", and "Dishwasher Not Draining" (sources 1–4), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 9), which maps manufacturer codes to a component, a ranked fix, and a DIY difficulty, has no Maytag dishwasher entries, so the code→part table above combines Maytag's own "symptom → potential cause" snapshot with our own mapping to parts. Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Switch the breaker off (Maytag: don't rely on the control panel). Shut off the water. Bail out the tub. Keep towels and a shallow tray ready when you disconnect hoses.

1. Water slightly above the filter; drains slowly

Likely causes: a clogged filter or sump, or a partial restriction in the drain hose. Maytag says many "clogged dishwasher" complaints come from neglected filters or food debris in the sump.

Signs: cloudy water above the filter; slow drain at the end of the cycle; residue on dishes.

DIY difficulty: Easy.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Upper / lower filterCatches food before it reaches the pumpEasy

2. Water near the door; nothing drains

Likely causes: a severe blockage (knockout plug left in, clogged disposal, crushed or clogged hose), or a drain pump that isn't running.

Signs: full tub; no change after a reset; F9E1.

DIY difficulty: Moderate (disconnect and flush the hose at the sink end; flush with warm water or a garden hose; use a flexible plastic line or dishwasher-safe brush for stubborn clogs, never sharp tools).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain hoseCarries water to the sink drain, air gap, or disposalModerate
Check valveStops dirty water flowing back into the tubModerate

3. Steady hum (or grinding) but no water moves

Likely causes: a jammed drain pump impeller (Maytag: a steady hum with no water movement), or hard debris such as glass in the pump area (grinding).

Signs: humming during drain; grinding; F9E1 after the filter and hose are clear.

DIY difficulty: Moderate to clear debris; Advanced to replace the pump (lower panel off, hoses and wiring connectors).

Call a pro if: the impeller turns freely and the hose is clear, but the pump still doesn't move water.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pumpPushes water out through the drain hoseAdvanced

4. No pump sound at all during drain

Likely causes: an electrical or control problem. Maytag's snapshot lists the door switch, wiring, pump voltage, and the timer / control board. Less commonly, a drain solenoid on some older designs.

Signs: the cycle pauses without the drain pump starting; F6E1 on some models.

DIY difficulty: Advanced; diagnose first before buying a board.

Not sure if it's the hose, the pump, or the control? A technician can check pump voltage, the impeller, and the drain path in one visit; that's the visit that decides repair vs. replace.

What Maytag's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per Maytag's US "10-Year Limited Parts Warranty" page (read 2026-10-30), for major kitchen and laundry appliances made after 2017:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1All parts and labor for defectsMaytag
Years 2–10Limited parts on the dishwasher's stainless steel tub, nylon racks, and chopperYou

What this means for a dishwasher that won't drain: in year 1, a failed drain pump, hose, check valve, or control board is covered. After year 1, the drain pump, hose, check valve, and board aren't on the 10-year list, so you pay. The chopper (the blade that breaks up food on models that have one) is a listed 10-year part, so if a tech blames it, ask whether the part is covered. A knockout plug left in, a missing high loop, a clogged sink drain, or a dirty filter isn't a defect in the dishwasher. Maytag says to see your product's own warranty for details, so keep your proof of purchase and check the sheet that came with your model. Maytag Customer Service is 1-800-344-1274.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 all parts and labor; tub, nylon racks, and chopper parts through year 10 on models made after 2017; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: normal water level, knockout plug, disposal, filter and sump, hose routing and high loop, air gap, suds, 30-second reset.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and whether the tech checked the sink drain first.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Maytag's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + installation + haul-away (+ new hoses or install kit)
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A new Maytag dishwasher, installed the same week as a new disposal, shows F9E1 on its first cycle. The disposal knockout plug was never removed. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old Maytag dishwasher hums but won't drain with a clean filter and a clear sink. A tech replaces the drain pump: R = $280; N = $850; no other repairs.
280 ÷ 850 = 33%; life used 5 ÷ 11 = 45%; repeat check 33% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Maytag dishwasher needs a control board. It had a pump replaced last year for $250. R = $400; N = $850.
400 ÷ 850 = 47%; life used 10 ÷ 11 = 91%; repeat check (400 + 250) ÷ 850 = 76% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board on an older dishwasher, a second big repair in about 2 years, or a leak under the tub. (On a post-2017 Maytag, a failed stainless tub or nylon rack is a 10-year parts claim first.)
Tips toward repairing: it's a pump, hose, check valve, filter, or latch; the dishwasher is under about 8 years old; or the real fix was the sink drain.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.

3. A plumber. If water backs up from the air gap or the sink itself drains slowly, the clog is in the house plumbing, not the dishwasher.

4. DIY with the right part. Filters, hoses, check valves, and many drain pumps are common DIY jobs. Order by your exact model number.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude clogs and installation problems. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered. Maytag also sells extended service plans on new appliances.

FAQ

Is it normal to have water in the bottom of my Maytag dishwasher?
A little, yes. Maytag says water about halfway up the filter area is normal; it keeps the seals from drying out and is replaced on the next cycle. Water above the filter or near the door is a drain problem.

What does F9E1 mean on a Maytag dishwasher?
Long Drain — not draining. Maytag's steps: clean the filter, check the drain hose for kinks or clogs, clear the disposal and remove the knockout plug on new installs, clear the air gap, and power-cycle for 30 seconds.

How do I read the flashing Clean light on my Maytag dishwasher?
Count the first group of flashes (F number), wait for a short pause, count the second group (E number), then a longer pause before it repeats. For example, 9 flashes then 1 flash is F9E1.

How do I reset my Maytag dishwasher?
Cut power for 30 seconds: unplug it, or switch off the breaker if it's hard-wired, then turn it back on.

Why won't my new Maytag dishwasher drain?
Most often the disposal knockout plug wasn't removed, or the drain hose is kinked or missing a high loop or air gap. Maytag says check both before anything else.

My Maytag dishwasher hums but won't drain. What's wrong?
Maytag says a steady hum with no water moving points to a jammed drain pump impeller or an obstruction in the pump. Check the sump for debris (including glass); if it's clear, the pump may need replacing.

Can dish soap stop a dishwasher from draining?
Yes. Maytag says dish soap makes suds that can push water out and cause poor draining and washing. Let the suds die down and use only automatic-dishwasher detergent.

Is it worth fixing a Maytag dishwasher that won't drain?
Usually. Most causes are free to fix, and a drain pump is a common, moderate repair. A control board on an older dishwasher leans toward replacing. Use the calculator above.
